I agree, although fret location has nothing to do with "how" he plays it. Emotion, feel, and expression have nothing to do with the area of the fretboard you play on. That's really what I meant. Everyones guitar/amps are different. Just because Jones plays something 'here' doesn't mean you have to. Pitch is pitch and it might sound better, for you as a player and your gear, to play it somewhere differently. As long as you but yourself into it, it will sound great.
Last night, I watched an orchestra play at a bar in Arkansas. There was a violin player who looked like a friend of mine and I couldn't place it. Drove me nuts. Now, I realize you're the guy I was thinking of. Have a violin playing, brother with a white man's afro?
Your Tool lessons have been a godsend man, I can't thank you enough! Not bogged down like some other lessons, right to the point, dialed in tone and straight forward. Greatly appreciate the hours you've put into these videos
i like how you teach about meters, measures and all the other sweet terms. youve invigorated my passion for guitar. i learned and grew up only playing drop d so this is a great for me
First, if you up your gauge to 60 (which is crazy and thicker than my 7th string!) you will need to properly setup your guitar, then you shouldn't have any tuning issues. Secondly, I use a regular .10 gauge set, it's only drop D. I've used thicker gauges or mixed sets but it's somewhat unnecessary (for drop D). That being said, since Tool riffs are mostly on the lower strings, adding thickness will directly impact your tone!
I wish I was you and started with TOOL because there songs aren’t necessarily extremely hard. They have hard sections but they teach you how to get out of 4/4 jail lol
@@marczwander893 well I never learned it hahaha, for years i didnt knew how to learn guitar really i was stuck on the pentatonic and covers bored me But a few months ago/ a year ago I discovered backing tracks on the Chusss youtube channel and I learned sooo much Before that everything seemed too complicated, i just lost time
Depends what tunings you go back and forth from, Drop D shouldn't effect your instrument. It's more the string gauge. Thicker gauges has more tension which pulls on the neck causing tuning/intonation issues. Pick a gauge your comfortable with and have it setup with those strings.
So perfect. I had just commented about two weeks ago that I would love a Jimmy lesson and you must've been 90% done with it when I commented. Cheers and thank you.
You're better off just learning one of them in the "wrong" tuning rather then tuning back and forth. You only need to be in the "right" tuning to play along or jam with people.
Great lesson man, nailed the song :) My only gripe is your comment that not knowing how AJ plays a certain riff, as long as the notes are the same, it doesn't really matter. Personally I think the reason Jones' guitar playing stands out is exactly that reason, HOW he plays each note. I've heard alot of people play Tool and just play "the notes", and there's no magic in it. Just my two cents :)
I really enjoy your lessons. Tool are awesome and I love to play their riffs, thanks for helping me out. Is there any chance you could do parabola? That is a monster song...
I have an Epi SilverBurst that i have spent a great deal (of time) modifying, made it look like a teardrop silverburst how Gibson does it, added a Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 in the bridge reverse zebra black and cream to match the cream binding, and I'm constantly changing tunings, maybe confusing the neck? Guess I need to set it up for drop D and maybe add thicker gauges on the e, B, and G strings balance it out and let it set, designate it my drop D guitar since AJ doesn't solo much
Hey, I love your lessons! Very helpful! This is kinda irrelevant, and I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but what guitar is hanging in the back? BC Rich?
What string gauge do you use on your Agile? I've been using the Zakk Wylde custom heavy (10-60) and while I do enjoy the low end the thicker strings seem to put out for chord work, and the thinner strings for faster fret play and easier bends, but the problem is that it's so unbalanced I'm constantly having to tune the G and other higher strings, any recommendations or advice?
Looking to get a cheaper amp under $500 that's good at emulating TOOL songs.. Had to ask the master if you have any suggestions for a new player. Thanks Axe for all your videos. Has helped me out tremendously
One of the most confounding aspects of guitar playing, and one of the most ignored, is string choice. The same note sounds different on every string. Generally speaking, thicker strings and frets closer to the nut have a richer tone, but it varies too much from set to set and can be affected by more variables than anyone can consciously keep track of. I think it is a defining part of a players voice, but it's a journey of self discovery. Tone comes from strings and fingers before anything else.
A bit of Korn there from 8.02 to 8.13 :D I agree with the others, some tone settings ( for POD ) are appreciated...I just "liked" you on FB so I need to check if you share something :) Keep it up with Tool lessons
Excellent work as usual, keep it up! Oh yeah fu¢k face(palm)book please. Post play through videos here or on your awesome site. That virus ridden place is a disgrace to the internet.

Thanks! I'll post some tones and patches I use soon enough. It's still relatively new so I'm constantly exploring.
It's up there now!

I fucking love this song!! and i'm a beginner at guitar so i'm gonna learn this one, but it's look hard
Hey how did it go? Was my first song too and such a nice introduction to playing the guitar because its so genius yet so simple!
I wish I was you and started with TOOL because there songs aren’t necessarily extremely hard. They have hard sections but they teach you how to get out of 4/4 jail lol

thanx so much my friend, great lesson, i think jimmy has one of the greatest riffs in rock history especially the real heavy part, it's so badass!

totally agree with you. Jimmy is an AMAZING SONG! btw, FANTASTIC job covering these songs and teaching them. keep up the good work broseph
You're bad ass dude. Wow, nice work and thanks so much for sharing

Should be up now
No. I'm now using the Line6 HD Pro.
My favorite tool song.
Oops haha. Never edit in a rush
I'm learning both this and passenger at the same time. now I understand the need for 2 guitars, so much tuning
You're better off just learning one of them in the "wrong" tuning rather then tuning back and forth. You only need to be in the "right" tuning to play along or jam with people.
Ive been really enjoying youre great Tool lessons! Nice Adam Jones tone you're getting too, especially for digital, it fits it very, very well!
Great lesson man. My favorite song period.
Instant Subscription! Amazing work, so much details, thank You!
They're coming...
That mini-riff in the middle is a lot of fun to play, must have spent more than hour paying it this weekend lol
Great lesson man, nailed the song :)

you're a prince among men... haha. thanks for the vid/transcription, keep em coming.

I really enjoy your lessons. Tool are awesome and I love to play their riffs, thanks for helping me out. Is there any chance you could do parabola? That is a monster song...
and i completely agree about jimmy being undernoticed. one of my tops

Sweet vids man.. Do you happen to have any of your POD patches on custom tone?
I second this motion.
*sees new Tool lesson in subscriptions* YES!
Doesn't ending on the '1' make it a 1/2 step above the root giving that sense of incompleteness, which is something Tool would purposely do.
amazing lessons thanks so much!!
Run it through a cab? powered monitors? Sounds good
Thanks you again very much for another awesome Tool song lesson.
Btw, I think the previous haircut was cooler :)
Hey, I love your lessons! Very helpful! This is kinda irrelevant, and I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but what guitar is hanging in the back? BC Rich?

What gear are you using these days? Still Peavey?

Why don't you give lessons from the Undertow album?
what guitar is this? it's probably way out of my budget but i want to learn this song soooo badly!
Thats very true, I think I may have misinterpreted your meaning :)
Im still experimenting to get the perfect tone for this song. Sadly the inet wasn’t much help so far. Any tips besides a flange, anyone?
A bit of Korn there from 8.02 to 8.13 :D
I agree with the others, some tone settings ( for POD ) are appreciated...I just "liked" you on FB so I need to check if you share something :)

Enter Reality you realize Korn was after Tool right? If anything Tool influenced them, along with many other bands. Cmon man.
How about a parabola lessons?
6:30 it's too hard for me !
What tuning and key is this in?
Tuning? Dude, it's Tool. Alway drop D. And centered around it.

Excellent work as usual, keep it up! Oh yeah fu¢k face(palm)book please. Post play through videos here or on your awesome site. That virus ridden place is a disgrace to the internet.
@axeofcreation Dude someone stole your hair..... Glad to see it hasn't led to a Samson-style loss of power :p
I thought it was played in 5/4
Sober lesson?
