- This was the last thing that I expected to catch while fishing in the Ovens River. I have been fishing in the Ovens River for 4 decades and have seen a lot of things come and go, and seen a lot of changes to the fishing.
During the 1980s the Ovens River was an absolute redfin fishing hot spot. The river was teaming with redfin, otherwise known as English perch and it was not uncommon to catch 10 or a dozen nice redfin in a single afternoon.
During the 1990s fisheries stocked the Ovens River heavily with yellowbelly (Golden perch) which seemed to create a rapid decline in the number of redfin
By the end of the 1990s yellowbelly stockings had discontinued in the Ovens River and trout cod stocking began under the trout cod recovery program which lasted several years.
With all of these native fish being stocked into the Ovens River, the redfin population was decimated to the point that they have become as rare as hens teeth.
So rare in fact that I can only remember catching 1 single redfin in the last 20 years and that was about 8 or 9 years ago on a cast lure.
This redfin was the last thing that I expected to catch in the Ovens River in Wangaratta. To be honest, I would have been less surporised if I had of caught a rainbow trout!
I suspect that this redfin may have been washed into the Ovens River from a nearby creek, lagoon or dam in recent rain events and no doubt it was only a matter of time before a Murray cod or a trout cod found it....and ate it!

God this bloke reminds me of every genuine bloke at the pub. Too good
Haha thanks mate. I am genuine, and I do like visiting pubs. 😂😂🍺🍺
Lmao robbie you are being stalked by subscribers you are officially a RUclips Star
Hahaha Thanks mate. Might need to start wearing a wig! LOL #ilovetheattention
You are truly the nicest guy ever. Thank you, the world needs more people like you.
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Where’s that place?
My grandfather was a WW1 war veteran, his advice to me before he left this life was. Don't trust the police don't trust the government & don't go to war ! Go Fishing 👍
WW1 WOW. My great grandfather was a WW1 veteran as well, he was a light horseman at Galipoli. Hius son, my beautiful grandfather (My hero) was a spotter in WW2 in New Guinea. Full respect to them all.
Fine advice God. Bless him
Not gonna lie, that’s one unique line, it sounds like he knew something that the government was hiding lol
Adrian Xenia , we hope those who would make you a slave feel the same way.
Wise man! Lol
Cheers Mate, You have inspired me to take my 3 kids out fishing. You have returned to me a feeling I've not had since my pop's family fishing trip holidays. He passed away about 9 years ago and my heart and fishing had been strangers since then, Until now with you and your video. Thank You.
Hi mate thank you so much for your amazing words. You comment has hit a chord with me. I use to love fishing with my Pop as well, he passed away 15 years ago aged 83. Today would be his 98th birthday if he was still with us.
Nice to hear some positive feedback on the police for a change, there’s too much negativity surrounding them at the moment. Nice Red fin ..
Thanks Mark. I agree mate. Like all organisations there's always going to be a few rogues but on the whole they're a good bunch of people with a job to do.
I have a couple of friends who are coppers locally and they're great blokes, just like these 2 in this video....wonderful.
Not gonna lie but when I read the title and looked at the thumbnail I straight away thought that you probably fished a dead body out of the river
Haha I wouldn't be putting that on RUclips if I did mate. LOL
@robbiefishing ikr what type of idiot would put a dead body on RUclips hahaha, oh....
Trump lost no more mango mussolini hehe 😈😈😈😈

Hi mate thanks so much for your kind words.
I couldn't believe you got handed the "Encyclopedia of Fishing Australia".
There are three large folders in the set, my father started collecting them from the newsagency mid 1970's.
They are a top read.
Yep....how lucky am I. That's so awesome.
Keep up the good work Robbie, you make my day start with a smile.
Hi mate thanks so much for your kind words.
Great video Robbie. I remember fishing there with my old man 30 years ago probably just before I unfortunately became too cool for family holidays.
Haha too cool for family holidays. LOL
30 years ago there would have still been plenty ofnredfin in the river too.
Nice social fish there.
Thanks heaps Andy. Sure was a fun night.
@Andy's Fishing Wild Cook social fish, like social fishing? Like social distancing... BUT WITH FISH?
Enjoy your fishing mate, I’m a salt water man but have occasionally fished rivers! Caught a huge Mary River lungfish when I was about 12 and the thrill of that catch and release has never left me in over 40 years!
WOW Paul that sounds very exciting mate.
Robbie, you are a legend! I grew up in Shepparton, and its great to see some rural VIC fishing.

Gr8 session Robbie. All you needed is a yella to make a complete set lol. First the cops then a Rob, a funny coincidence. Anyhow keep up the good work. 👍👍
Haha Thanks mate. A yella would have completely blown my mind. LOL
Glad to see someone in my area starting a channel

Hi Pete thanks so much. Sorry to hear you've had a crap day. I worked all afternoon and had a great shift. My shitty shifts were just a few weeks back. I think we all go through good and bad patches mate.

Wow you've got all the luck mate! I can't even buy a fish at the moment haha. Hanging out for Springtime. I bet your heart skipped a beat when you first saw those cops coming at you lol
Haha Its all skill mate. I was specifically targeting redfin. LOL No luck involved. Hahaha
RKJ Fishing, Rohan, I think he was secretly waiting for a pat down from the passenger cop :)
First fish I ever caught as a kid was a redfin. It was a bit smaller than that one though, nice catch indeed. Great video. I haven't gone for a fish in far too long.
Good Vid Robbie, I am heading to Lake Nagambie tomorrow, Hoping for an August Cod :)
Thanks mate. Good luck at Nagambie. I was over that was yesterday at Waranga Basin. Had a BBQ with a few friends.
Trevor Kay I have never had any luck at Nagambie could I please have some tips?
Very nice session mate. 👍 Hope your old man loves the reddy. 🇦🇺💚 cheers Rob.
Thanks Nick. I have a feeling he filleted it and cooked it for my mum.
I hope your old man gets better soon mate, you could have worse subscribers than a police man 🤣🤣. What a busy session, great to see all the loving your getting though Robbie 👍
Hey Steve thanks heaps buddy. They were soooo nice.
robbiefishing no worries, you know you mentioned putting the boot on it’s head and throwing it back? Do any of you guys eat carp? They had to here but they were kept in very clean waters so may have tasted better 🤷♂️

Hi Peter thanks so much mate. I don't think that I could handle living in a city. I would feel like a fish out of water. I hope you had a fantastic Christmas too mate.
Awesome video mate and what a chunk of a redfin..and it's always nice to see the cod
Thanks mate. That redfin was the blast thing I expected to see in this river. Blew my mind!
It would definitely be a relief when you see two cops walk up and one says 'I'm a subscriber to your channel's 🤣🤣

Thanks Robbie for making such great content, just got out of hospital after breaking ankle badly and your video is keeping my spirits high. Can't wait to get back out fishing this summer. Also I have now caught many redfin in the Tea garden creek just about 800m up stream from were I met you the first time. Thought I would just let you know, I was also very surprised to see them there as well.
Hey Jack thanks for watching. To be honest I am surprised that I have not caught a redfin there. When I was a kid there were heaps in there. Brett and I fished it a few weeks back and caught nothing. LOL
WOW that sux about your ankle mate. I hope you're OK.
Broke it playing basketball of course hahaha. Only a break luckily I didn't need surgery.
Hi Robbie nice catch i was surprised to see somebody catching a nice eating size Redfin in the middle of winter
Thanks heaps mate. The most surprising part was that it came from the Ovens River. LOL
Great idea to go to the local river and have a go in winter when it actually has some water in it.
Didn’t mean to dislike this vid such a good one !
This guy has great sense of humor!!! Be cool to fish with him! Subscribed!
Hi Mike thanks so much mate. I might not be the best fisherman but I reckon I have the most fun. LOL
Your a top bloke Robbie... hope to catch up one day n have a coldie together...cheers from S.A

Really good video, great to see the interaction with the public. That book that Jarrod gave you looks like a beauty.
Was waiting all day for this, bring on the Redfin!!!
Thanks so much mate. I love catching redfin....whether intentional or not.
Murray Cod. Cool fish. Looks like a hybrid smallmouth and largemouth bass. Do they get big?
Good stuff Robbie didn’t expect that
Thanks mate. I thought I was seeing things. LOL
Great video! I really enjoyed it. can't wait for the next one.
Thanks Kota. I have another fishing video coming out tomorrow night.
The cops were checking you killed that carp. The fine book was itching. 😜

G’day Robbie, great show mate 👍👍👍
That was a fantastic session, Robbie.
Thanks mate. I sure had a blast. Was only there 2.5 hours.
Great fishing.
Thanks heaps mate.
loved Reddie fishing when I was a throwback size, used to fish the irrigation channels all around TONGALA before and after school! most were from 3/4lb to 1 1/2 pound! still love my reddies but not as plentiful now!
Love it your fishing in the place where i caught my first cod in 1975-76. scary when i think how long ago.
WOW Muzza thats so awesome. I remember catch heaps of reddies there back in the 80s.
Nice mixed bag Robbie! Miss my old reddie spot from when I was a kid lucky if you can land a mud marlin there now :(
Thanks mate. That's very sad.
Robbie: reels in carp
Cop: I'm the bald guy
hahahaha
Robbie you deserve 100x more subscribers than u currently have
Thank you so much mate, I can only dream!
First video I have seen, but loved it mate! You seem like a top bloke
Hi Cam thabk yku so much for your kind words mate.
Even in Oz you have the curse of the Carp. My sympathies to you.
Its actually pretty damn bad here idk whats its like compared to where your from but i heard theres alot of them in our waters.
Yeah they're certainly a full on pest here mate.
@@robbiefishing There is a river here in the US where if you take your boat and and traveling at speed, you might just get a carp jump out of the water and hit you right in the face. You could be traveling along on the boat and at any time, you'll see at least 50 of them jumping out of the water. They are so plentiful in that river that the fish commission uses electric shock to kill them and when they float up to the top, they are gathered up by the boatloads and taken to a fish processing plant and ground up and used to make fertilizer. They will have 3 guys on each boat with gaffs and they fill the boats in minutes. Usually at least a half dozen boats used at any time and they do it several times a year.
Love your work Robbie.
Awesome channel mate just subscribed looking forward to watching your videos 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy my videos.
Wicked a nice green back and a nice redie. Good job mate
Hi Eck thanks so much mate.
On ya Robbie keep it up mate love ya work and your fun attitude !!
Hi Hamish thanks so much mate. Its all about having fun. In not the beat fisherman but I reckon I might be the best at having fun. Hahaha
Nice Robbie if you don't mind me asking whys it so rare to catch redfin there now. That's so nice that a couple of subscribers came to visit you.
Thanks champ. Basically the river was stocked heavily with native fish in the 90s and the redfin all disappeared.
First time I saw your channel. What a nice friendly bloke you are, remind me of all the kiwis I've ever met. Britain's finest exports! Tight lines!
Hahaha I like that. LOL Thank you so much mate.

Wow that Australian fishing encyclopaedia is old they're 2 volumes to the set my dad found it for me in second hand book shop in the late 80's as his not into fishing he thought it would help me out & he'd still take me fishing (even if was to hide from mum for the day lol) & drop me & mates off down the river a bit further then we could ride our bmx's until we got a bit older👍🏻 still have those encyclopaedia 1s got a little water damage from a drink years ago but nothing a kettle can't steam open🙂
G’day Robbie Red Fin we call Perch in the UK keep the good 🎣🎣 vids coming m8
Great clip mate.
Thanks so much mate.

I remember when my dad demonstrated how to use a spinner, the first cast he brought up a redfin. And I remember doing it myself and seeing about 5 or 6 redfin chasing the spinner. This was in the 80's at Yarrawonga.
Hey mate that is awesome. I LOVE it when redfin do that!
Keep it up mate. Not long until summer. Big cod...big.
Haha I hope you're right mate. I'm already hanging out for December. Hahaha
Nice going Robbie, hope the old mans ok. Nice bunch of people around there by the look of it.👍
Thanks mate. Old man is well thanks. Just been a bit crook lately. Wangaratta is a great place, lovely country atmosphere.
im not into fishing much anymore but i really enjoyed watching your vid and brought memories of when i was a kid and camping along the murray near echuca and catching nothing but those bloody carp and then the odd cod even caught a turtle and a murray cray on my fishing line and luckily the hook had gone through his lip and he hadn't taken it down his throat so i could remove the hook
Hi Dave,m thanks so much for your kind words mate.
Nice fish Robbie! It was funny that the policeman was a subscriber! Not surprised though.
