Fishing In The Berrigan Channel in NSW

- The Berrigan channel is fed with water off the Mulwala channel, which is fed with Murray River water off Lake Mulwala. In this episode of my From The Vault series I am fishing in the Berrigan channel with my wife Lauretta back in spring time last year.
Berrigan is a small town in the NSW Riverina region, a part of the world that I really love.

I don't know how i found your channel in the last couple weeks, but i like your videos. Watching from Oregon, USA.
Hi mate, thank you so much for watching. I love the USA. You guys have a great fishing culture.
I'm in NSW and my town is canowindra.
Welcome mate 🇦🇺
This would be the only American in the world to have ever see the beautiful township of Berrigan 😂
Always a good night when robbie uploads
Thank you so much. 🙏
G’day Robbie, great looking spot mate. I can give you the news on how to get rid of those flys, but I might get in trouble, 😂. Great video again mate.
Haha thanks Wayne. Those bloody flies are an absolute pain. This time of the year I miss the warm days but I certainly do NOT miss the flies and mozzies. LOL 😂
The apprehension of new waters is like a petrol gauge. Empty, full, or anything in between. If the smaller fish are there the larger ones must be there too. Great video Robbie.
Thanks mate. I agree. I love the excitement of exploring new fishing spots.
Yep. Fillet of carp for bait.
Thanks Robbie. Great to see someone out amongst the flies while there aren't any here. They will be back in September though and they'll be just like those. :)
We're still getting bits of rain here. If it keeps up I'll go looking for yabbies.
Thanks Bruce. Isn't it amazing how we look so forward to the warmer weather, and then when it arrives we do nothing but whinge about the flies the mozzies, being too hot and getting home too late. Haha 😅😅😅
The 'Aussie salute' getting a workout :)
Thanks for the upload.
Haha thanks mate.
The only man in the world 🌍 who could catch a fish 🐟 in a puddle. Just hearing your exciting and positive voice there is no one like Robbiefishing 👍👌🤙
Thank you so much Sharon. Haha It's always exciting catching a fish in a new fishing spot. Actually, it's always exciting catching a fish anywhere. Haha
Awesome work you doing Robbie fishing
Thank you so much mate. 👍👍
luvin your vids mate, basic fishing, easily explained.
Thanks so much mate.
Good to see you trying another spot - looks like the weather was OK then too, not like now 🥶🥶🥶
Thanks Frank. It was certainly much warmer then..
Love it, I worked at the local tyre shop a few years ago, nice little town, good job.
Thanks mate. It is a nice little town. I really do love the Riverina.
Did you call into Wandin valley 😂😂. Great video Robbie. Love the oldies jokes
Haha thanks mate. 👍👍
Who gets around? Robbie does. Dedicated to his craft and shares it with us all, a fishing legend.
As i kid i happily got dragged around with my father and his mates duck shooting in channel country. Have never seen so many shrimp. Great memories, thanks for your work once again Robbie.
Thanks so much mate. Haha I sure do get around, I love exploring.
Well, that answers that question, Robbie! I’ve often wondered about fishing in those channels. Great video, Robbie ✌️🙂
Thanks so much Tubby. I really enjoy this type of fishing, especially when I am exploring a new spot.
Glad to see you in NSW!!
Thanks mate. I spend a lot of time in the Riverina, I absolutely love it up there.
Another good bit of pest control of the waterways 👍
Plenty of fish in there as you said, to bad you didn't get a yella i was sitting here hoping haha
Tight lines legend 🎣
Thanks mate. I was hoping for a Yella too. Haha 😅😅
Gday robby ive been sick with the flu recently and your videos have been a cure for my boredom
Thanks for your kind words mate. I really hope that you can feel better soon.
Me too 🤧
55 years ago we had redfin at lock 7 near Renmark, caught them using foil milk bottle tops as lures.
No carp then, good old days!
Thanks Peter. WOW That's unreal. Are there still any there now?
@@robbiefishing Buggered if I know! Not been there in 54 years🤣
and no, I'm not winding you up, but I've never been back due to all those life things that get in the way.
@@Peter57808 hahaha
Just sat down to wind down after work and I get a notification that Robbie posted, best night! 😁
Thank you so much mate. I hope you have a great evening. 👍👍
Doesn't matter how many videos of Robbie's I watch the Hey You your watching robbiefishing always makes me laugh.. awesome video as per usual robbie . Good stuff mate keep the grouse stuff coming.
Thank you so much for your kind words and great feedback mate. 👍👍
Reddie number 5 was keen to go hahahaha. Great video! 😁🎣
Cheers Robbie. 👍🏻👍🏻
Good session hitting the irrigation ways Robbie….and thanks again for stopping by at Griffith BCF.
G'day mate, it was great to meet you. What a great day Holly and I had yesterday. You live in a beautiful part of the world.
@@robbiefishing Like wise, let me know when you’re out this way next and we’ll go for a flick at my favourite spots.
New adventures reap rewards great video red hot fishing well done
Thanks Pete. 👍👍
GREAT JOB ROBBIE
Thanks mate. 👍👍👍
Good trip mate 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cam. 👍👍
New spot looks like a new good spot.
Thanks Vincent. It sure is a relaxing spot to fish.
Just drove past there on my way back to the Coast and the channel is near empty, but have always had some good luck out that way. Nice session on the Carp and Reddies, but several guys from Deni swear by that area for Murray Cod in the summer. The bakery in town is worth a try too if you get back over there. Nice job and hopefully you get back there again!
They are draining all the channels, the ones out my way are being drained atm, im not there as we’re travelling but family has said it is great for fishing as it is so low, the main Warranga wester channel is know for big cod in some spots so it wouldn’t surprise me if there was cod in there
Thanks so much Larry. I will definitely be heading back mate. 👍👍
I actually stopped there on Tuesday. I went for a drive to Griffith.
I absolutely love the Riverina.
I fish that spot Robbie and many other spots it’s a great channel
Thanks mate, it sure is. I really enjoyed fishing it.
Great video mate, if a snake popped up from out of those rocks it would be irrigation of a different type lol.
Hahaha thanks mate. 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Robbie good video mate no redfin of any size but a least you took some pesky carp out of the system 👍👍👍
Thanks Kevin. I am looking forward to returning to this spot again this spring and having another go. There's got to be yellowbelly and bigger redfin in there somewhere I reckon..
It’s full of fish just no big ones that you saw but still a lot of fun cheers
Nice spot around Berrigan/Finley.
You're not wrong mate. Gods country. I love it up there.
nice to see Robbie that is very close to were i grew up .... Finley ... that is the big main irigation channel good fishing in the channels...... put the yabbi nets in....
Thanks mate. I love it out that way. I tried yabbying in a channel near Jerilderie last year and didn't do any good.
I have earmarked a few spots to try again this spring time..
youtube dad back at it again, good vid mate
Thanks so much mate.
I was watching and wondering what the heck is that flying past in your camera? Is it birds? Then I remembered you said earlier the flies are going crazy. Haha they don’t stop! Your videos are always entertaining mate. Even the carpio action 😂 never have the landing net!
Haha thanks mate, and when I do actually remember it, it's never ready to go. LOL 😂😂
Nice Robbie I go to this channel before rush worth on middle road and in summer the yellowbelly go off but some days you can get 12 yellas or nothing But there all over atleast least 50cm
WOW that is so awesome. Channel fishing certainly is a lot of fun.
Your the best
Thank you. 🙏
Good job. Reckon you've probably found another POI (Place of interest) to re visit.
Thanks so much mate. I certainly have. I look forward to returning there this spring. I might even get over there later in winter when things just start warming up.
It would be interesting doing an overnighter there with yabbies and some cheese for bait. Cheers mate 👍 🐕 🤠
Thanks Mick, that would be interesting. I'm looking forward to heading back up there this spring.
Don't get angry with the carp as they make wonderful compost for your garden and grow the best vegies.
Thanks mate, they certainly do have some good uses.
I know you have in the past Robbie, but I think that an explanation that these two species of fish are not native to Australia. So they don’t feel too bad when they’re hooked too deep or they feel that you’re being cruel just for the sake of being cruel. Which is nothing like you mate. Fish on my friend and keep your awesome videos coming.
Hi Kev, that is a fantastic idea mate. Thank you. Next time I'm fishing here, or in a spot where I catch both of these species, I will try and remember to do that for sure.
Looks bloody good.be good for shooting fly long distances.
I did have to look up where Berrigan is exactly and oh boy, lot of farmland and not much else down that way. Another 5-6 Redfin like those and you'd have enough for a whole can of sardines :)
Carp were quite sizeable though
Haha thanks mate. I love that area. You're right, lots of farmland and it is all very flat.
Hey Robbie, next time you try Chanel’s take your shrimp net and yabby net, there’s tons of shrimp and tons of little perfect bait sized yabbies, I found you catch way less carp on the shrimp and yabbies, the channel fishing is my type of fishing, the channels I used to fish are way smaller than that one.
Love ur work mate, tight lines bro 🤙🎣🤙🎣
Also who was there with you?
Thanks so much mate. That's an excellent idea.
I was with my wife Lauretta. 👍👍
Anyone know if fishing is good at Goulburn river Seymour or lake nagambe and how to target cod would be great great video Robbie
Thanks mate. I haven't heard a lot of reports from over that way sorry.
Hi Robbie I am Kyle I am 10 good fishing funny😂just yesterday I caught my pb Redfin 48cm i caught it the Kyabram channel my home town and on Saturday I am in hope for my new pb Murray cod in the Edwards
Hi Kyle, WOW That's a lovely redfin, well done mate. I love fishing in channels. Good luck on the Edwards. 👍👍
Thanks
I find that reddies that feed on yabbies and the like tend to be more darker in colour, the silvery ones tend to feed more on fish. I could be wrong but that's what I've noticed.
Ah OK that's a very interesting assumption. Thanks for sharing it.
Love this video Robbie! I've been watching some of your past videos where you caught some "trout cod". Are they good to eat, or are they protected? I'd love to know. Cheers mate 👍
Thanks mate. Trout cod are protected. They almost went extinct at one point but have come back thanks to a lot of hard work.
@@robbiefishing thanks for responding Robbie. Appreciate it. Can't wait to see more of your videos! Have a good day mate. Cheers 🍻
💛...it's robbie... fishing...featuring a cast of thousands...
Haha thanks for watching Harold.
Watching your video I started to swipe away the flies lol also Robbie what landing net do you use?
Haha they were terrible that day.
I'm not sure of the brand sorry mate, it may be a generic Compleat Angler net I think.
I love the tiny rod, what brand of rod is it?
Thanks mate. I can't remember exactly but I think it's a Silstar. It is a lot of fun. It is 103cm long. Haha
Love it 🎣👍🤙🇦🇺😂
Thanks mate.
@@robbiefishingallll good when ever I see your videos pop up it makes my day better 🎣👍🇦🇺🤙
Hey mate I have a question for you. What's a good light fishing rod for soft plastics to catch redfin and trout also cracking video mate
That's a huge ask there's sooooooo many
@@Auqalungangler yeah
Hey mate, your best bet is to pop into your local tackle store and ask for help. Not only are there so many, but because I don't work in a tackle store I don't really know what is on the shelves these days sorry.
@@robbiefishing it's alright mate thanks for the tip mate also thanks for replying to me
Small bait small fish. Big bait big fish 🎣
Hello Robbie
I was just wondering what happened to
RKJ Fishing ?
Haven’t heard anything from him
He hasn’t posted for a few months
Do you know if everything is alright with him
Love your channel
Keep it up
Thanks Robbie
Thanks so much John. Yeah I spoke to Rohan recently. He is a great friend and we keep in touch. He is going OK mate. 👍👍
Hey Robbie good looking spot there do u think u could come to Benalla in Victoria for a fish .
Thanks mate. I definitely will at some stage. It's on my to-do list. It's only half an hour down the road from me.
@@robbiefishing yea ok half an hour that’s not to far then
Hey Robbie I've always wondered if you get eels where you're from?
I have watched most of your videos over the years and can't say I've seen one.
I'm from lilydale and I can't name a body of water around here that doesn't have them. We catch them all the time down here
Hi mate, no we don't get eels up here. I would love to catch eels someday.
@@robbiefishing thanks for replying mate.
Yeah we have them everywhere down here. Is there a reason they don't make it that far north?
Dipped ya lines in the River Rina!
Hahaha
I think in NSW, releasing Redfin is discouraged in the regulations (though not banned) - I guess they are considered a pest.
That is correct. Discouraged but not illegal. I prefer to release them.
They have fish in there? While I was at a job site at berrigan, learning about the farm for school I asked if they had fish in the channel and they said no but I guess they do. Those channels are to flood the fields where they farm, if you look around the edges of the paddock there’s flood gates
Thanks Max, yep I have seen them. Cotton and Rice both require flood irrigation.
After several days of heavy rain, how does this affect Redfin fishing ?
Hi mate, it varies from one spot to another. In a lake or a channel where everything is controlled it usually doesn't have a huge effect. Rivers can get very high and dirty though which could turn them on or shut them down.
@@robbiefishing Just a huge pond / dam ?
When I was 10 I used to catch heaps of big Redfin in there about 20 in one session but now I’m 35 I never catch any just carp.
Carp certainly have thickened up mate. Still a lovely spot to fish.
❤🎉
how do you know its croc free?
Hey mate, I live in the southern, colder states of Australia. This is new South Wales. The crocs are all up in the tropics about 1,000 miles further north.
after casting a lure for a dozen casts no bites i switch ut out.
Excellent idea.
That channel certainly was a bit of a hot spot for non-natives
Thanks mate, I look forward to returning there one day.
I've never seen so many flies buzzing around the camera.
Haha they were driving me mad. LOL 😂
Robbie did you go to school in Wangaratta?
Hi Catherine, I sure did. I went to the Wang Tech School.
@@robbiefishing it was probably a lot like Alexandra was back in the 90s hey? I only did a year in Alex but I think the high school was as small as my PS was in rye
Carps looks healthy...
Later in the day might have gotten you a yella or a cod!
Thanks UF. Sunrise and sunset are always best, but I ran out of worms. LOL 😂😂
@@robbiefishing So I saw!
HEY ROBBIE:
Have you ever tried eating carp? Just Interested.
Hi mate I sure have. If you search "Robbiefishing carp catch and cook" or "robbiefishing mariocarp" you should be able to find my carp catch and cook videos. 👍👍
I reckon those carp would make great bait and burley.
There's not much structure on that channel.
It's kinda sterile.
Like a politician. 😂
Hahahaha
Robbie the Carp King of Wangaratta.
Hahaha
what you call a redfin looks the same as a European Perch , nothing of any size came out mostly small stuff ,
Thanks mate. Yep, these are the same thing. We call them redfin here in Australia but they're the same fish. 👍👍
my surname lol
😂
First
Well done mate. 👍👍
It’s a hard spot there are way better spots
Sorry not every fish is a fish.. carp are crap all same letters 😂
Hahaha I can't argue with the facts. LOL😂😂
Think you'll find you're breaking the law
How?
How am I breaking the law?
He’s not doing anything wrong mate
@@Tobysfishingandtravelling Thanks buddy. This one has me a bit baffled. A bloke tells me I'm breaking the law but can't tell me how. LOL
I assume he means because I release redfin, which isn't actually illegal. 🤔😕🤷
@@robbiefishing there’s nowhere apart from ACT/CAMBERA where it is actually illegal to release reddies, it’s your choice, I release them as well.
nice video robbie
Thanks mate. 👍👍
