Little did the Thibault fencer know... the Italian wasn't left handed.

I do love to see it when two excellent fencers try styles against each other for comparison and this was an excellent piece of raw footage. I do worry often about the risks of comparison that echo what MMA attempted to do for what is "the best". Only a little of what was done with swords were written down, so we have a narrow representation of practice. Then the motives and success of writing can influence what those sources give. But one of the essential concerns over "which is best" is the context of what was each style attempting to do...Masters of defense who were writing from a more militaristic or street-fighting purpose would account for multiple attackers and various kinds of weapons used against them. In competition, we limit ourselves to the gentlemen's duel with a limited choice of weapons for either. On those rules, we would discount valid schools for simply having a different focus; or appearing earlier in the timeline where a duel might face arming swords and such over a rapier, side sword, or small sword...My advice to anyone looking at this terrific study is to find the school that is taught closest to you and then matches your body and philosophy best, and enjoy the benefits rather than worry about how well you would do if transported to 17th century Europe. Cheers!

I love watching the two styles in contrast. That Thibault fighter was so precise, it was awesome watching them walk around the Italian rapier fighter.

In the essential differences of the styles, Thibault takes a circular philosophical approach while Italian is generally more linear. I wouldn't want anyone to take an impression that literally walking circles around someone is better, since it is the nature of the style. Both gentlemen were excellent at their respective styles in all fairness.

Love the Thibault fencing style. It's so disinterested and casual, like it wasn't designed for dueling with live blades. Doubtless it must have an unnerving effect on the opponent

In sword fighting, it's pretty easy to be good against an opponent half your size

For the whole fight I thought the smaller fencer was a woman, then they took the mask off and it was a man with a pony tail! Lol.

Skilful and beautiful but insufficient 'downe right blowes' for some.
