  • Cleaning the laser and mirrors on an HP Laserjet laser printer to fix weak prints. Learn how the laser and mirrors impact your print results and how to clean them.
If you've replaced your toner and you're still getting weak printouts - especially from an older laser printer - you may need to clean the laser and mirrors.
It sounds challenging, but you can do it yourself if you are patient and careful as you go. Of course, proceed at your own risk and research your model printer so you know where the laser and mirror assembly are located. Be sure to unplug any electrical devices before working on them.
When the laser and mirrors get dirty, the laser has a weak beam which creates a weak charge to attract the toner and ultimately creates a weak print. Cleaning the laser and mirrors can return your printouts to like new quality.
We hope this helps you, thanks for watching and have a great day!

Honestly, I was sceptical about all this, but I followed through. Luckily my printer is the hp cp1215 which is similar to that and what do you know, IT WORKED!! Thank you so much!!

Awesome!!! You're welcome! We totally thought ours was just leaky toner at first too, what a difference the lenses cleaning makes.

    Thanks... Liked, Subscribed.
I'm hoping you may advise me on a problem...
I am getting 2 vertical narrow, 75mm wide faint strips on my 11x17 color prints on my HP M750 laser printer. I've replaced the toners, inspected everything, done cleaning cycles, etc... and it persists. It seems as if it is the black that is the omitted color in the 2 strips of faintness. The strips of faintness edges are not abrupt. It seems to have started after the printer took 2 pieces of paper in a printing cycle and they were staggered, one a bit ahead of the other. The fuser was loosened and the pages pulled out. It printed perfectly prior to the incident... if I recall correctly.
Any ideas for me?? Is the actual laser itself dirty? It is driving me crazy.
    Thanks again... Very appreciated...

You're welcome. Sounds like it may be an issue with the drum. If the drum unit is ok, and the mirrors are clean, it could be the LED or light that is damaged or dirty.

@@fatherandsonfix Thank you. Appreciated it. The printer is relatively low page count... Couldn't figure it being something so protected as the led or mirrors. The "windows" are covered by a scissor contracting cover which do not move for cleaning. I attempted to blow it out with a duster can and will run a test Monday. But, one thing I hadn't swapped out is the fuser unit, which is where I pulled a double page draw from when this problem started. I have a spare old fuser so I'll swap that in, then, too.
      Thanks again... Very appreciated!

Thanks for the detailed process, but I wish you showed the last part of removing the laser unit’s top up close, as there is a metal part holding that cover that I can’t seem to pry to top cover easily as you did. I hope you can provide an answer for that.

Do you have the same model? There is a screw that is holding it together that needs to be removed. Once the screw and spring are removed the front can be easily opened. Also check for plastic tabs at the bottom. If you have another model, we can't provide direct guidance. Search for a repair manual for the model. Typically it's a small screw or clip that needs to be removed. Let us know how it goes!

A lot of time the "dirt" on the lensif its an active printer is 95% just toner powder thats blown out or fall out onto the lens. Remove all 4 toners in my example a little love and easy does it with the air nozzle from the compressor and a few puffs of air on each of the 4 lenses, in my case that sit directly under each toner and good as new!

Good advice! Compressed air is a great way to start and can save from more disassembly. For heavily used printers or those with difficult to access mirrors, sometimes a little more love is needed :)
