I feel like this process didn’t work for you because in order to break someone to make them better they have to be in a place where they actually NEED to be broken. It sounds like you were already fulfilled and you didn’t need their validation. God had already built you up. You didn’t need them to build you into something better so you didn’t need them to break you down in the first place. You made the right choice for yourself. You’re a queen 👸🏾💅🏾

One of my biggest takeaways from this video is that we need to support first-generation college students. There is a huge push to attend college, but not a lot of preparation for dealing with these types of ancillary events; while being academically successful.

    • @patlui7542
      @patlui7542 5 лет назад +18

Be it, first second or third, support. is always paramount. Why the need for only supporting first generation? Sounds classist. Not because they are first in a generation to attend doesn't make them less prepared than a Rockefeller, Trump, Loughlin or Smollett...ti each his/her own in sourcing information to succeed.

    • @NikkiCFO
      @NikkiCFO 5 лет назад +92

Pat lui I’m not being classist. My response was in relation to the young woman who made this video and stated that she is a first gen college student. Of course, support is needed for anyone wanting to attend college.

    • @JG-tr9py
      @JG-tr9py 5 лет назад +46

@@NikkiCFO , I think I understand what you're saying and you're absolutely right. Many times there are young women and men who attend college, but they didn't know anyone who could explain some of the other things (besides academic experiences) that they will experience while in college. As a result, since certain things were never explained, once they start having certain experiences, it will seem a bit strange and come as a surprise to them. I know since I fell into that same category. I had to learn a lot on my own.

    • @lovelife6275

First generation college students need that support. Most people who have family members in college help them during college preparation. Like visit different colleges, different scholarships etc. We come in blind because no one has prepared us for the process and eventually dropping out after freshman year. Most people want you to go t college but won’t support you in the long run. They never have tips or suggestions when college starts to get difficult besides go to college.

I went through the exact same thing and I also dropped the process because it wasn’t worth selling my soul for a “sisterhood”. As you stated many times, sisters would NEVER treat you the way those girls do. I chose my academics and even though it came with consequences (socially) I am now about to graduate from my PWI in less than a month. I’ve never been more proud of my individuality. I know how it feels to be ostracized by the black community because of this decision. We are so strong.

Often, nowadays, it's better to be around non-African Americans than African Americans. Also, I know someone who wanted to pledge AKA, but after AKAs learned that she initially wanted to pledge Delta but changed her mind, they wouldn't let her pledge AKA. She still attends a top HBCU. However, she is now in medical school and has done well without them.

Makala Conner see what type of self hate comments you brung to this video. Pledging didn’t work out for you and that’s cool. Perfectly fine. I’m not mad at it.
But to make it seem like you were ostracized by the entire black community for your decision. Is total bullshit.
It’s that type of narrative that leads self hate and division in the black community.
Hold your head up and be proud of your individuality. While still respecting the cultural impact of black Greeks.

I brought no self hate comments to this video. I simply shared my story. You do not know me or my life, therefore you cannot speak on my experiences. Black Greek underground hazing processes are done at the hands of blacks who hate themselves. The separation that black greeks causes in itself is a divisive tactic fueling elitism. If they talk articulate and carry themselves right and if they go to school they have this oh she think she's better than us mentality and treats you like shit. They like bringing down their own race it's been like that for decades. I've been in that position many times it sucks. What's really only good for networking? Ivy League schools. Buy that degree and get those high paying jobs from your fellow alumni (if you're white, especially.)

@@joyfoster4342 I agree! I've been in 5 years and the Sisterhood is real! I've seen a Soror's daughter get help in Virginia by another D9 member because her mom got on a FB page and asked a bunch of D9 members (strangers) if they were in that area. I've seen mother's picked up at an airport because an emergency left the Soror stuck. I've seen a Soror get stranded in another city, get picked up by some local Sorors, fed, housed, and transported back home, no questions asked. Yes there is exclusivity and tight requirements to become a member. But if anyone can join, no one would. It's a lot of work that's being asked of each member. Exclusivity means you are more likely to be there for the work and not just the T-Shirt. It's not for everybody, and that's ok too.

I joined a black sorority10 years ago. I am still ashamed of the pain I personally went thru and the potential hurt and pain that I may have caused other beautiful, strong black women. The letters mean absolutely nothing. I am not the same person at 29 that I was at 19 when I joined. We do not have the mental capacity as teens and early 20s to make rational decisions and be responsible especially in situations were we have "power." its absolute nonsense to have African ancestry and put on Greek letters. I could go on and on about the inconsistencies and damage these orgs cause, especially in perpetuating classism , colorism, etc. My org did nothing but cause me anguish and destroy relationships. The best thing to come out of it was connecting with my LSs. Its literally a hustle. Do not feel incomplete or less than. Your loyalty, time, and talent belong to building God's kingdom, not glorifying man and stroking egos to the detriment of your own soul and self esteem and those of other women. your worth is not in the letters/colors you wear. You dodged and bullet sis! And you saved some coins. You can volunteer and mentor for free! Be blessed.

real talk I had a friend who is no longer a friend that told me I have to befriend fake people to get ahead in life. this is absolutely not true. it's a rockier journey, but success is yours when you find true friends and acquaintances who want to help you succeed and you help them. I literally had to circumvent the globe to find those people at different points in my life. Despite this, the journey was well worth it, and I am glad I never had to pledge into a toxic group. Though I do understand that with greek orgs it really varies chapter to chapter. With the right people in a chapter it can be a great and supportive experience. With the wrong people, it can be the most toxic experience of your life. It can even turn you into a toxic person. You might have some semblance of success, but you might risk not being able to fully enjoy the benefits of that success.
This at the end of the day is just life. Identifying toxic environments and people and finding an exit should always be a priority. I always tell folks don't let a bad experience dictate your entire life. If you wanna crossover, do it, if you find the chapter you're pledging with is toxic then get out of that chapter. there will be other opportunities to crossover. You don't only get 1 opportunity. They will make it seem like it is your one and only chance it isn't. Likewise, if you decide it isn't for you then don't do it. I never crossed over. I don't regret that decision. This is my life and I have to own the decisions I make and understand the bad experiences I go through in order to move forward. Life is hard AF. The truth is, the people that the presenter in this video encountered are everywhere in society. I see her experience as one that will guide her for the rest of her life. I hope she always choose to walk towards the light and not into darkness that is toxicity.
The closest experience I had to her's was my time in Peace Corps as a volunteer. I was medically released from service and was so glad. I heard from other black volunteers their experiences, and it sounded like hell on earth.

As a member of a sorority, that just isn't' the truth. In my 31 years as a member, I've had many a GDI come and tell me years later, that THEY felt 'some kind of way' about the BGLO members tight-knit relationships and were projecting because they felt left out or jealous (not all GDIs, because it didn't BOTHER most, one way or the other). I also could care less if someone is in a fraternity or sorority or if they are not. I have friends and family that are both GDIs AND members.

GOD, is not the author of CONFUSION... PAYING to be humiliated, and "broken down" after YEARS of building yourself up to go college (as a 1st generation), was definitely NOT something I wanted part of either. Even when they present joining a Grad Chapter...we all KNOW how undergrad initiates, view people who join Grad chapters,
    -after undergrad. 👀 👀
We were all born alone, and will be buried alone. College is definitely all about Discovery of SELF, as an individual. I'm glad you stood up & spoke up for yourself and figured out what was BEST for you... THAT is..... a "process" in and of itself.
Those who figure out that they can STILL serve the community and form lasting friendships OUTSIDE of a BGLO... WIN.

I think my mother was happy because she didn't want me to be in a trap of having to be an x to feel accomplished but rather trust in God to supply all my needs and lead me to success, which happened. I had the worst experience. It started out terrible for me with the girls initiating. I had a child he semester before entering undergrad. The sisters from the chapter that already graduated would attend and be horrible: one talked so down on me about being irresponsible enough to have a child that I could do anything for as a broke college student and talked down so negatively in public. I still didn’t stop at that point and we were invited to a sisters house: At which point we were mentally tested and forced to do calisthenics and humiliated. My jewelry which I was forced to removed was missing. The next morning at 5am I had to call a big sister and she told me to go get her dry cleaning. At this point with a sleep baby on my side I told them to go jump in the river. I completed undergrad, went on to get my Masters, I worked my career and now hold a directors position in government and my son just finished his freshmen college year at a HBCU. Point: Do what works best for your life and end game!

To everyone who has shared words of comfort and support, whether in comments, on Twitter, Instagram, texts and phone calls, I want to say THANK YOU, I appreciate you greatly.
To address a couple other things: I graduated from college (a semester early) in Dec. 2017, so no need to wish me luck in school lol. I now live in Los Angeles and work in the music industry. Feel free to check out my other videos about that, I have a bunch!
Also - not looking to be greek anymore. While this was once an important accomplishment for me, I now know my life has much more to be accomplished, and I can live without this.
As stated in the video, I'm not providing the name of the sorority. It is not pertinent to the message of the video
Again, this video is what happened to me personally, in which technically was mental and emotional abuse, and I know in some instances for some sororities and fraternities continues into physical abuse. I said nothing wrong in this video, simply spoke my own truth. If you find any issues, please take that up with God and yourself as that must be a personal issue you're facing. My conscious is clear. If you would like to tell your side, feel free to make another video speaking your truth and link it below. :)
Lastly, the camera was sitting in my window, so that's dust floating around in the light around the camera lmao. I didn't realize until after the fact, and definitely wasn't sitting for another hour to re-record.
Thanks everyone for the support and I hope this was able to help those who needed it. I know when I was depressed from this moment I felt completely alone, so I hope it can bring some solace to someone.

Once the interview was over, I called the secretary of the chapter... told her what I just went through and dropped. The president of the chapter called me and I snapped on her. I told her, this is not how a potential sister should be treated. i wouldnt even take that mouth off my own sister so Im not taking it off of her. Surprisingly, she agreed and asked me if she got the chick to aplogize would I not drop. And I told the president as much as Ive always wanted to be in a sorority... this sorority is not for me. I also told her that I can understand the process on becoming a member, I will not tolerate being disrespected. I can relate to this story. I had a very similar experience in college. I did end up joining a graduate chapter, and that was a really wonderful experience. We had a process, but it was designed to build the bonds of sisterhood, not tear you down. Undergrad fraternities & sororities are just an example of giving too much power to those who are too young to wield it responsibly.

You are good enough without those letters, and you didn't have to prove anything to another student. A sister doesn't treat another sister like dirt. My sorority doesn't define me or has done NOTHING to get me where I am today. It's just a money maker for someone else. I refuse to give then another dime on my money. After a grueling night of torment, when we got back to the crib and turned on the TV, at Morehouse, CNN was covering how they murdered one of the guys that was online. When I was a junior in college I decided to pledge a sorority, it was not a D9 organization. There we were things we couldn’t eat, I had to pay mad bread up front, we had to wear the same clothes everyday, we had to carry around “our brain” in our pants, memorize all this info, we couldn’t talk to anyone except the members and our professors- not even our family (they would check our phones), I couldn’t even go home for the holidays smh, they would tell us to drive to an address and we didn’t know what to expect when we got there, we had to go to “set” at nights... then one night we had set and I had a paper due the next day. I spoke to my professor and let him know what was going on and he said if I didn’t hand it on time, I’d fail. My ass did not go to set that night ... everyone was pissed but 🤷🏾‍♀️ school comes first. Then they started to treat me worse after that day so I finally just quit. The day I quit I was at work. I worked on campus and the person I was pledging with came to get me so we could go back to the our spot and I refused to go... I had a complete mental breakdown that day and so did she. We both cried like babies. Although by that point I had already wasted my money and time .... my spirit couldn’t rest until I was out. It sure isn’t for everyone but all the best to those who can use it to benefit them

I don’t understand how you can be a part of a sisterhood and not lead by example on how women should treat each other. How can you build someone and mold someone when you are clearly still maturing yourself. I feel a lot of these sorority members are not genuine. They are just people that will do almost anything for social status. They have to enforce that status by putting others down because the status is an illusion.

I have an older sister also and when she was in college ; you couldn’t tell her she wasn’t ready for her new chapter. As time went on my sister decided to join AKA 💗💚sorority.. she was so excited but then her excitement turned into disgust on how they would bully you and make you feel less of a person. Just to make it clear my sister is a very strong woman but that experience was phycological abuse ; eventually she left and never looked back. I don’t knock those organizations but they need to be more mindful on how they deal with a person’s delicate mind and what their backgrounds may have been.

Girl, I feel your pain same thing kind of happened to me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t cross cuz I didn’t have enough support from my line or in my personal life. Plus, it was just too much. I invested money that I barely had and tried to meet the requirements, plus the group projects but with my line icing me out it was hard to do everything on my own. Hard to make new friends when there are clicks within your line. Honestly, it just became too much and took a mental toll on me to the point I had to be hospitalized. I’m a first-generation student to, but my parents are immigrants and live outside the states. Initially, that’s why I considered going Greek to meet new people and build bonds. Cuz going to school full-time and working at the same time is incredibly stressful especially when you have zero support of any kind. I was going through so much and had no one to confide in. On top of everything, I was going through a crisis of which I wasn’t able to get help. Ultimately, my time trying to join a sorority last semester was a complete waste of time, money, and energy. Because I encountered fake people that pretended to be my friends and then later disregarded me the minute I left. Refusing to acknowledge me on campus. The icing on the cake was because I tried to make the sorority a priority I failed one of my classes. Erika, I feel your pain you did your best and it's their loss.

I passed on crossing over because from the start I saw how cliquey & judgemental the sororities were. I had no interest in belonging to an organization which dictates what you do, what you wear, what color you wear, where you go, who you can be friends with, who you can hang out with, etc. Also the arrogance is outrageous.
    Yet they call you sisters.
What if I don’t like you like that?
    Nah, no thanks.

Thank you for sharing your story.
As a PROUD and ACTIVE member of a D9 sorority, it’s very unfortunate to hear your story and that you were not able to obtain what was once a goal.
I watch these videos because i believe these perspectives are important in knowing how non-Greek persons view our organizations.
What I do not appreciate, which has mainly come from the comments, is how FAST we put down and demonize Greek organizations without any knowledge of the work/purpose. Yes, there are “bad” stories, but they do not wholly reflect the true essence of what our Founders created. (In the video she clearly states this lol)
As someone who is an Interest, it is imperative that you find an org to belong to and NOT one that you must fit in. You must realize that every org isn’t meant for you, but that doesn’t necessarily negate the fact that you don’t “deserve” to be Greek.
Everyone’s experience is different. Some have great stories and some have bad. But you should never alter yourself for the name of some letters. She realized this about herself and moved forward. But y’all in these comments (whew chilay 😂).
She also went for a very specific organization and a chapter (though unmentioned I can assume lol) that obviously maintains the negative stereotypes. But please let me inform you that, that DOES NOT EXIST IN EVERY ORGANIZATION. Yes, you must put in work and show that you are able to handle the load of your org, but when done correctly that will never steer you away from your individual purpose and goal. It will only add to it.

sumeya aa I’m black and I have stayed black. The only thing that represents being “Greek” is the letters of our organizations. At their foundation, blacks were banned from gaining membership in elite collegiate groups so they create their own. Within the American culture of academia we utilize Latin and Greek language.
If your hesitation is the idea of being black and labeled “Greek” then I strongly charge you to do some research on black Greek life. You’d be surprised how many of our most noteworthy brothers and sister old membership in these organizations.
It is much more than the name of the letters.

I agree 100% and I don't fully understand why people still think that we are somehow "brainwashed" or sold our souls to be a part of a NPHC org. Moreover, these claims are unfounded and false. I've been an Alpha for nearly a year and a half and there was nothing demonic or satanic about any experience I've had. I've made strong connections with other Alphas and other D9 orgs and yet it bugs me that people make such claims. On the flipside I empathize with her experience. Clearly the chapter she was trying to pledge were immature and were more focused on hazing than actually sticking to the process.

@@cloemarshall7237 I agree, I joined a grad chapter and they seem more established and relevant. Everyone in the chapter is bonded thru sisterhood as well as a connection in their communities because they live in the area or close by. They seem to have more vested in because they can see the fruits of their labors each and everyday. Undergrads seem so disconnected once they graduated from college. They all graduate and go their separate ways. Yeah...they may be bonded together by going thru the process and being together on campus. That's all cute and everything, BUT, what are you doing after college. Its more to it than wearing letters, strolling, stepping and your colors. If you aren't doing anything worthwhile than you are not being an asste to the organization.

I soon realized a lot of these was trauma bonding with others, which can be very toxic and dangerous. While I still think there can be some validity to these orgs (some of my mentors were), I think a lot of them have been corrupted by people who wish to exert power on others to make themselves feel big. A lot of them also, in my opinion, seem to not be as revolutionary and progressive as I thought, are moderate (politically) at best. Good evening, I'm texting you from Charlotte, NC. I've been in the sorority over 30 yrs. now and I was in your shoes when I attended undergraduate school (NC A&TState University). I decided not to pledge because I felt that my studies came first. The sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. weren't pleased with my decision because they knew one of my oldest sisters was a member (Spr. 77). I graduated from the University and went on with my life. A few yes later I approached my next door neighbor who was an Old School AKA and shared with her that I was interested. All it took was her " influenced" and I was selected to pledge Graduated Chapter. I have enjoyed my 30 + yrs. in the Sorority and no one can ever take my Letters away from me as long as I respect myself and the sisterhood. I received my calling as a Prophetttess now so what happened then only made me stronger in my Faith and Walk with God. What matters most now is serving God to the fullest and not Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Spr' 89).

This makes me feel so much better, I was so bitter about not making the cut after my interview, similar to you I just knew I made it... and I felt like I had prepared so long for that moment I just knew I was the kind of girl they wanted to be apart of their org, and one of my biggest frustrations was that I had bonded with the advisor of the chapter at my uni she was so nice, every time we spoke she would tell me “you got this girl no need to be nervous trust me” she was personable and would even bring up things from past convos. In fact all the older women in that org were so nice understanding and respectful and I know for a fact if the younger girls weren’t making the decisions I would have def made it for sure!!! After the interview I didn’t hear anything back for a while and I knew I must not have made it but my mentor told me that no matter what they are still supposed to send out letters. So one day I called to find out where my letter was, when I called the first time there was no answer, the second time there was an answer and I asked if the letters were sent out? And she said what’s your name I said my first name and she quickly said my last name and that confused me because mind you, over 200 girls rushed so idk why she would know my last name off the top of her head. But hey I got my letter of denial eventually and I will still continue to live as I was before, my ideals, morals and values are the same my service to my community continues and I will succeed with out membership, because I have to! it is what it is and I was depressed about it for a while but now I feel much better knowing I’m not the only one!!!

I realized I didn’t wanna do it when I saw how ppl would stab you in the back just to be in it. A friend of mines stabbed me in the back to join. Ppl that hated me and my girlfriends in college, now my friend joined and they’re best buddies it just don’t make sense to me. It’s like you’re paying to have friends 🤷🏽‍♀️ So many people I know changed and completely ditched all their real friends who loved them way before any of this and they’re so different now. Either way I got sick of chasing around a sorority and constantly feeling like I’m not good enough. I don’t wanna spend forever proving myself just to get on.
I also went to my friend HBCU for homecoming, she has 80 line sisters. Not one of them tried to help her get a ride to campus for the yard shows and stuff. They would drive past her and everything like she was nobody. The girls were divided and argued all the time. It was sad as hell 🤦🏽‍♀️no sisterhood at all and this was one of the big HBCU campuses, Alpha Chapter.
Another instance is my cousin is pre med major and she’s graduating soon. 4.0 students, plenty of interns, in every honor society, club, etc you can think of. She went to the rush and found out that they didn’t make it a little while after. She found out that this girl was her boyfriends side chick the whole time so she convinced everybody to decline her application due to jealousy. It’s too many politics I can’t do it!
