    After owning Vintage guitars now, with Wilkinson hardware and pick-ups, I won't ever drop big money and pay for a name again. I have a Icon v6 distressed and a V75 25th anniversary Tele and they are freaking insane. I love the Wilkinson 60s WVt and s pick-ups they use. Alnico 5, great output. And on the strat, tone 2 is for the bridge So I roll off the tone and run mad distortion on it. Or go play some clapton or Hendrix. Actually had a probably with the neck pickup and reached out to support. The guys at the US custom shop are wonderful. Actually replaced the neck pickup with the hendrix style reverse pole pieces. Love it. I'm thinking about buying a rail for the bridge. Not worried about splitting it.

    I'm going to order these pups from Amazon today, cuz your video. For a Squier Affinity strat I'm refinishing wid green sparkle by Rustoleum rattlecan. I take it as a good omen that I just happen to have a chunka the identical green short nap carpet on my workbench to protect delicate finishes. Think about it! I'm in Canada, you're likely U.S. and we have the same random scrap carpet. Boggling! Thanks for the show!

    • @Guitarnivore
      @Guitarnivore  2 года назад +1

      I hope you enjoy them and I hope they improved the screw holes on the bobbin. Yeah, that piece of carpet has been a great, cheap investment for working on guitars. I think I got it at Family Dollar for less than $10.

    • @rutiger6901
      @rutiger6901 2 года назад

      New plan here. The green carpet will see more action from the delicate gloss clearcoat of TWO guitars with my new plan. The Affinity series body thickness is less than that of my SX which I also have in "mid project". I will install the not yet arrived Wilkinson pups into the SX rather than into the Affinity. Because the deeper cavity of the SX will allow me to take coil splitting measures which are perhaps unlikely with Affinity owing to very shallow cavity rout. The Wilkinsons with 4 wire conductors deserve to be exploited to their fullest extent rather than let their potential languish unrecognized in a guitar that is inadequate by design for this serious upgrade. The SX soap bar P 90's will lay into the Affinity rout without problem. Pick guard screw hole alignment will call for holes to be "dowelled" and new ones drilled but that is insignificant. Thanks for listening and guitars'r'fun!

      I don't think I did split them. This video is a few years old and I can't recall. I've drank a lot and slept a lot since then. If I were to split them, I would opt for a partial split to get a bit more power out of them.

    • @Guitarnivore

      These hot rails, while bright, always sound a little thinner than your regular size humbucker, but yeah, you can get good gain tones from them. You might have to EQ some bottom end in with them though. The main problem I had with these was the bobbin screw hole was weak, but I think they fixed the issue.

    I just installed them again in my Strat with 300k audio pots. Also wired up a blender pot . Thought I'd see what the 300k pots are like since I've never used them before. Slightly brighter than 250k. Nice pups for the money, can't go wrong with Wilkinson. My guitars all have Seymour Duncans in them except my Gibson LP. So, I'm used to more expensive pickups. These are decent, and can be wired for single coil cuts, parallel series switching ect.

    I wanted another combo amp instead of always using my Peavey 5150 head and the EVH 5150-3 50 watt head. can't wait to plug these in..doing a comparison with Seymour Duncan vintage rails..they are low output but really sound great...thanks for this video,have been wanting to hear the Wilkinson Hotrails.

    • @Guitarnivore
      @Guitarnivore  4 года назад +3

      I got these as a complete set for testing and review. I prefer a regular ceramic or AlNiCo single coil in the middle and neck of a Strat, but a good hot rail in the bridge is always nice if you want to crank up the gain. Someone that is a bit into trying different sounds from those two positions might be better at achieving their goals with a set. The main thing about them is that they're humbucking and you don't have to worry about much noise. You could even split them all into singles, but I doubt they would sound like a real single.
