Really great to see you covering XPlane again. Would love to see more content, I’ve been thinking of trying XP12 but have held back. Would love to hear your impressions if you were to spend more time tinkering with the sim.
Take a well deserved break from all the headset impressions and reviews, enjoy what you love, flying ❤
Your comment hit the mark mate. Thankyou
@@VRFlightSimGuy No, thank you. Being flight sim nuts, we’re a passionate bunch, but sometimes a bit demanding!
Let's admit that the rain effects looks horrible here ;].
There are times it looks great, but most of the time, it looks pants 😂
Like crystal sausages sliding across the windshield. At first I thought it was glitching. But nope. They meant that.
I finally uninstalled XP (my first love in flight sims) as I just was never able to get decent VR performance with it compared to MSFS no matter what I tried (4070ti, 13th gen i5, RIFT S - soon to be Pimax Crystal Light). And MSFS continues to make great strides toward equaling and perhaps surpassing XP in the flight model department, depending on the aircraft. Plus, the mental effort of managing 2 ecosystems was really getting old Lol
Xplane12 has the worst performance in all the sims with VR (Crystal Light here). Unusable in my opinion, unless you lower all the setting to bare minimum.
Opposite here for me. With OpenXR, RTX 2060, Pico 4, about 30-40 FPS - medium settings (except textures, that's set to high)
I love both XP 12 and MSFS. I am a 53 year old student in the real world (there’s no limit on age!), learning in the tomahawk. XP 12’s flight dynamics are superior to MSFS without question but in my case there’s an exception - the Just Flight PA-38 in MSFS uses its own outside coding and the stalls/spins and other flight characteristics put XP to absolute shame with this specific aircraft! If only Asobo would look at and learn from LR’s way of implementing VR, we’d be onto a winner!
I’ve ordered a Quest 3 so I can use my real-world charts and kneeboarding in pass-thru. I hope that will gain the ultimate advantage with MSFS. Time will tell…
Thank you for your videos bud! 🫡
A big nah to that. I did have X-Plane installed for years as an alternative to MSFS, but then came MSFS2020.. And now ~$1000 worth of addons later and MSFS2024 around the next corner, my interest in X-Plane is most likely lost, literally forever.
MSFS sceneries are superb but XP12 has improved a lot with last update. If you use AutoOrthoXP, then you can get orthophotos and better fps. I use both (MSFS and XP12) and I can find something special in both of them...
and of course, please bring XP12 content to the channel please!Thx in advance!!!regards!
Much appreciated thankyou :)
🎉 great buddy. It was about time to show it.
More is always appreciated.
Have a great weekend.
Thank you very much for that.
Hey mate, yes it's about time I started to show more variety. Have a great weekend. My best to you and your family 😊
I can remember X- plane11 had an excellent replay option.
I love XP12! I actually used XP10, a Pro-Flight Trainer and a rift to run through my lessons again when I was working on my Private Rotorcraft license. I absolutely believe that it saved me time in the cockpit since I passed my checkride at 49 hours and the average is 80.
It would be great if LR would add an easy way to switch the graphics settings between VR and pancake life MSFS has or even saved configs like DCS does.
Anyway, I regularly use MSFS, DCS and XP12. I love them all! Can’t wait to be able to sling load in MSFS too!
XP12 is my fave over MSFS, but I’ve avoided VR in it so far. Absolute wish list item would be anything you can share about mixed reality in XP12. I’m ready to drop the coin on one of the really high-end headsets that support a good mixed experience, but only if the tools are there. I don’t mind being on the leading edge but don’t have the time anymore to do the hardcore work of “bleeding” edge 😊
I'm at a professional college training program and we are very interested in using X-Plane 12 and mixed reality to see if the primary flight maneuvers can be learned more efficiently and to a higher standard. We do not need lovable flight time, but we want to try cohorts to see what effect sim training has vs a control group. Can you help us with ideas for a little unofficial experiment? @VRFlightSimGuy
I fly Xplane exclusively and would definitely like to see more content here.
Noted!
I hardley ever fly MSFS 2020. I fly XP12 for myself and XP11 for commercial. There is so much more you can do with settings. XP12 was slow starting but comming along nicely. It is a shame that some of the aircraft and scenery developers have turned away, even ignored X-Plane as it doesn't bring in all the 💰
Devs left because the sim is dead.
@@activex7327 Sure, few left alledgely for ASOBO, but it is far from dead. For what I use X-Plane for MSFS is a non starter. Looks nice though.
I do not understand why Microsoft/Asobo did not just cop the great UI for VR from XPlane.
Good to hear something about X-plane. Basically the difference between MSFS and XP is better visuals against way better flight dynamics. They are much closer to reality, although I can only judge it well on the 737 and 777, which are well known to me in real life. But I didn't get decent VR performance at all, so I went to MSFS. I'm waiting for the perfect balance between those two major aspects, hopefully MSFS 2024 will do a better job on flight dynamics.
Yes, I remember following along with you and getting a lot of the things you recommend for X-Plane. Countless hours downloading and converting scenery files, buying software that is basically useless now. My first HP Reverb G1, etc..... Sorry but I see no major changes/upgrades made to X-Plane 12 that would make me want to switch back. To me X-Plane is more of a cartoon game than a real simulator. I don't think you should waste your time on any videos for X-Plane. I'm staying with MSFS 2020 which has a much brighter future. Just my opinion.
Thanks for being here for so long mate :)
Use X-Plane 12 with Pimax Crystal via RTX 4090 on DOF H6 with full flight controls…… Aircraft are Toliss Airbuses exclusively with SayIntentions ATC. Also fly the Diamond D42 along with the odd Helicopter. I have all North America and Europe/Asia Ortho scenery files on two 4TB drives. MSFS2020 was removed from my simulator six months ago and I wont go back. I have full fluid motion and visuals and therefore have stopped looking at FPS…. distracting and wrong priority. Would love more X-plane 12 material. Thanks for the content.
I use Pimax Crystal for FS. I love X-Plane 12 but cannot get it to work with Crystal. I tried several options by either starting x-plane 12 in SteamVR Home Environment, or in PC library in Pc. I successfully get in the hangar facing the menu board with normal vision in the headset. It is only when the flight start in the cockpit that I the headset does not connect properly with X-plane as I get vertical color blurry lines, barely seeing the cockpit. I tried different solutions with/without OpenXr and/or PimaxXR, not to avail. I use RTS4090. My settings in X-Plane VR General Settings under the VRHardware menu all is Check ‘ Use OpenXR Runtime, Enable VR Mouse Cursor and both the VR Manipulator Settings’. Could you share how your configuration is setup to get Crystal to work and enjoy X-Plane Vr? Thank you, I much appreciated your time.
@@Guerbou I personally don’t use openXR and have it checked OFF in graphic settings. I use SteamVR with no issues. Curious if it happens with all planes for you?
@@H.Despres Indeed, it is the same phenomena with either Zibo or other planes. I have no Ai plane active, OpenXR is uncheck. Still the same. Thank you for your input.
Finally, got it working with lowering the graphics settings. Tks.
A big big thumbs up for you and your content Steve!!😎
aw mate thankyou! Means a lot
+1000 for all the comments from X-Plane users! Very good to see here. STEVE - Please do more X-Plane videos.
Cheers mate rgr that!
Liked it very much Steve! I love XP12 in VR 😊
Cheers Andy. I'm definitely going to do more I think :)
Laminar Research has prioritized flatscreen development over VR. They really haven't addressed important XP12 VR issues such as antialiasing, shimmering, poor performance and lack of controller sensitivity. I still think XP11 is a much better VR platform and I continue to use it, although I periodically check XP12 to look for improvements.
I do like the way it looks, except for the rain streaks on the front windscreen. I might give it a try, if they can improve that. Keep us updated Steve and would like to see how it runs on your motion rig as well.
Cheers mate
I use MSFS and Xplane 12, MSFS for eye candy and Xplane from time to time. With XP you need a powerful pc and a GPU with a lot of onboard memory to get the cockpit text to look good (otherwise it's blurry) however the instruments are far clearer in XP. I have a DOF Reality H3 and I prefer the feel of the aircraft in XP.
Please produce more content for Xplane especially for scenery add-ons. Let's hope LR one day can match MSFS for eye candy.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Yes, please do more videos with X-Plane 12! It’s the primary sim I fly in VR.
More XP12 content. Add your scenery add ons and do a VR settings guide please Steve.
Rgr that!
The VR UI in Xplane was awesome and is still better than MSFS 2020. Ultimately though I was wholly disappointed that Xplane12 had zero VR improvement over 11, and all the other features of MSFS, particularly terrain, just overtakes the experience as a whole for VR users.
Brilliant video Steve; I really need to get back into X-Plane.
Thanks mate! Much appreciated. I hope you are well :)
Last time I tried XP just tried to fry my 4090 giving me around 30 fps on very low settings. Big disappointment, it’s not ready yet, used to be my favourite sim.
As a PPL student, XP 12 defintiely feels spot on with the Flight Mechanics than MSFS2020. The way the Rudder is handled, Stalling, Steep turns, etc. Everything in MSFS felt really exaggerated, whereas XP12 just felt like it does in a real plane (minus the obvious G forces, etc)
I've used X-Plane 11 to fill in when the Azure servers are down, and the photogrametry is unavailable for FS2020. I've not had a chance to install X-Plane 12, just yet, but may do, at some point. I primarily use FS2020, as it allows me to fly VFR around my home city's airports. We got lucky, and our city just happened to be one of the photgrametry enabled cities. Thanks for the video. :)
Im using msfs and xp 11/12 in vr and dof h3. I find flying in vr feels more real in xp 12 than msfs especially flying through clouds and turbulent weather. You see wing flex while flying in xp not so much in msfs. Do a flight in you dof.i think youd be impressed cheers steve
In VR it's
FS4 > Xplane12 > MSFS2020.
I reverted back to XP12 during my Airbus type rating because of one thing : the ToLiss module is able to save cockpit and FMGC states. No 320 in MSFS can do that, which is a nogo in a learning context.
I do agree VR is now on par with XP11 and slightly better than MSFS which suffers from stutters.
Now, regarding flight dynamics between XP and MSFS, well... Canon or Nikon ? ;-) If you ask me, my answer will be : DCS !
What are you using to record? Is this the Oculus Mirror app? What Q3 settings are you using? Thanks
Recording from the VR headset thanks for watching!
Actually X-Plane is the only thing I fly in. It’s because of that fluidness and the flight dynamics compared to MSFS. Yes, you should try it in your motion rig with the CLS-60 and the XR-4 headset.
The word you need is Fluidity.
I have recently discovered your chanel. Really enjoying the content and part way through building a 737 sim but your videos are now steering me towards vr and a 2 DOF base.
You have mentioned OpenXr several times, have you done any content on setting up the quest3 with OpenXr?
Enjoy Fairford!!!
Regarding VFR, I prefer MSFS2020, I spent too much time to do my own tiles on X-plane instead to flight. And VR was a mess at the end of X-plane 11. But for IFR only, probably in 2 years they will have a better VR and a better ground representation regarding roads whom are far away from reality and even with IFR, in small GA, it's interesting to compare with a real map what we see outside. So I prefer flight than to spend tons of time to do the dev's work. I did my own Corsica, more than 6000 tiles to eliminate clouds, to do colorimetry. with a batch system, and an huge space disk to get raw satellites imagery and those corrected. Too much work. In MSFS2020 nothing to do. I heard that it exist an addon to read satellite imagery in real time, but they won't be corrected.
I have always loved the interaction of XPlane with VR over MSFS. It just makes sense that I should be able to alter controls with the controllers. Thanks for bringing us back to the place that loves VR!
Please revisit this I’m sure it’ll be a better outcome for msfs when ms2024 comes out later this year. Especially with the walk around feature
Cut my VR teeth on xplane 11, I loved the control in VR much better than MSFS.
No updates for VR on MSFS and still loads of bugs, if you get a chance Steve test Xplane 12 on a lower spec machine (RTX4070).
PS I got a second-hand quest 3, most impressed... I still have the varjo.
How do you work the Garmins and press small buttons in XPlane with the VR controllers as the plane is bumping around?
They can be a little fiddly :)
Used to use xplane alot but I've stopped altogether now. It's unusable with AMD hardware and even when it does it's sub par visuals and poor performance compared to MSFS which is so much better optimised and the physics gap is a myth now.
Does anyone know if the G2 has had some advancements in the last year or year and a half? I haven't tried it since then and am wondering should I chuck it in the garbage can and wait for the next "big thing" in VR? or will it do ok in MSFS-2020 with new software advancements?
More fps for me on XPlane 12 as opposed to MSFS. XPlane has better optimisation and less pixelated than MSFS.
Can you read cockpit numbers and info resolution wise in Vr ? Thank you!
It's ok, but the Crystal Light would be my choice for that.
I use Pimax Crystal and RTX4090 for FS. I also love X-Plane 12 but cannot get it to work with Crystal. I tried several options in any planes including Zibo by either starting x-plane 12 using openxr in command line exe, in SteamVR Home Environment, or in PC library in Pc. My settings in X-Plane VR General Settings under the VRHardware menu all is Check ‘ Use OpenXR Runtime, Enable VR Mouse Cursor and both the VR Manipulator Settings’. I would love to find the right setup so Pimax Crystal work with X-plane 12.
I have an off topic question which perhaps can be answered in one sentence:
Which of these headsets will give better smoothness and fps using lesser gpus in PC sims like msfs and DCS?. Like maybe a 3070 or 4070 gpu instead of 4090?
Crystal Light
Quest 3
HP Reverb G2
Thank you!
Reverb G2, but I do no recommend this headset anymore. Crystal Light will perform well with a 4070 with the correct settings, Quest 3 also, but with lower visual fidelity and similar performance, due to the encoding needed (no DP connection).
Tried twice to get it to work with my Pimax Crystal. Refunded both times.
That time again... 👀👀👀👀👀
I crashed your Tomcat, but it's off camera 😂
Guys, XP12 is currently on sale on Steam for $67 CAD. That's about $35 US or 15 quid in old money. Looks like a bargain to me. Only until the 11th of July.
Thanks for the heads up 👍
@@VRFlightSimGuy Turns out my exchange rates to US and UK were from 1997 😀 but it is still a good deal at $50 US and 40 pounds.
Thank you for using Quest 3 where most of us can afford it!
My pleasure. I love the Quest 3 😊
I let you know now..... Show mor. And please give a little advise on graphics settings😀. I prefer xp 12, for i want to fly and not okay an x-box game😉
I hope FS24 improve VR because in FS20...
huh?
@@VRFlightSimGuy I mean in FS20 you need a really powerfull PC, even a 4070 Ti suffers...
Why are u using oversampling?
Because the Quest 3 needs it to produce a sharp image
Is DCS the best performer in VR, maybe not,.maybe FS4 but it's got to be close. Shame XP12 don't seem to want to go there.
FS4, DCS then MSFS... unless you count War of Thunder or VTOL VR :D
❤❤❤
Cheers my friend.
I swear if you crash my Tomkitty!!!! I'll flip every table in this room!! 😬
LOL I cut the video before the incident 😅
@@VRFlightSimGuythen i will let it slide.... THIS TIIIIIME. 😳
I get uncontrolled vr shaking, uninstall demo xp, I would move back if the shaking was sorted.
Did you try using a different runtime?
Are you a real pilot to consider flight modeling, it is not only modelung, but also at least loading control system to be able to test it properly.
actually i'd prefer more DCS
I wish there were more hours in the day!
XP12 (12.0.9) still does not support the latest OpenXR build. You have to uninstall and use a super-old version of OpenXR.
It worked fine here, using the command line in the exe file
@@VRFlightSimGuythank you very much Steve! Did you use the nightly build openXR Toolkit?
@@andyydna5330 I haven't got that far.. yet :)
The problem with XP12 are the avionics not even close to what we have in MSFS, and I don’t even talk about navigraph chart integration, so even if VR would be better (it’s not) you still have crappy default avionics
I have a feeling FS2024 with it's new flight model will sink XP.
By far, the best VR interfacing is with P3d.
I am sorry but performance With pimax is horrible. All of this because Laminar still makes the "parallel projection" feature mandatory to fly with pitool...I wrote to Pimax and even connected them to Austin, to fix that issue. From pimax, it was nothing to do, just a couple of coding lines that they were willing Laminar to help.. the one that never answered back was Austin.. unfortunately not a RUclipsr here with my community to influence that.. but I did my best
That the 8KX David?
@@VRFlightSimGuy STEVE -- If David is correct, then will you try to help to get LR engaged on this? Do you have a way to do that?
@@rmm9676 I can try, trouble is, the 8KX is super niche at this time.
@@VRFlightSimGuy So David's problem is specific only to the PIMAX 8KX and is not a general PIMAX issue in X-Plane? Is that correct?
The reality is a 3rd of what you are showing at best.
Not sure what you mean here sorry!
@VRFlightSimGuy the video output shown is not the experience of the vr headset. I tried a reverb g2 and it was the quality of 640p if that
Runs like butt. It has a lot of potential but is half assed in its current state.
MSFS is a toy for kids, X-Plane is a serious sim for adults 😉
😅
From what you wrote, you are a child who is very eager to become an adult.
