Thank you for this, I've been giving my boyfriend bi-weekly leg massages for the lymphedema he's unfortunately developed over the past year due to the loss of kidney earlier in his 20s, now in his mid 30s his body is no longer as resilient and as such requires a little more care than he did earlier in life. I'm glad I watched this video after reading some information on MLD/SLD, as I was not priming his healthy lymph nodes before massaging his legs as well as treating the massage as a typical massage with the pressure that accompanies a regular massage, it seems the only thing I was doing correctly was massaging up and away from the swelling. I'm very grateful for the information you've provided, and I'm happy to know that I can help my boyfriend better than before,
I was born with lymphedema... I’ve tried to be positive and realized how blessed I am to be alive, to have all my limbs and have movement in all 4, but it’s extremely difficult.. 22 years later, I’m still very heartbroken every day when looking at my feet, when trying to put on jeans and my leg struggles to go through the jeans, when shopping for shoes and only fitting into sneakers 1 or 2 sizes above what they should be. It’s uncomfortable & sometimes my feet go numb . .. Hiding it from people especially romantic partners, breaks my heart & hits my self esteem . The list goes on and on. This condition really affects your every day life, more than you can image.. I pray to god every day that he gives doctors the clarity to find a cure for this.

Missed behind the knee and back of thigh.....which a LOT of lymph fluid accumulates. But I got the gist. Doing this 2-3 times a day and Leg Pump (just got it) AND wrapping AND compression garment on left leg when out and about is basically a full time job. I'm determined to bring my leg down and then Maintain BUT one still has to MLD, compression, Leg pump and wrap etc EVERY DAY. There is so much research being done for other diseases, but I feel this one is treated as though it's not as important or as big a deal. It has ruined my life in so many ways, has prevented me from living the way I want to. It's plain depressing. You're not alone.

The video can be deceiving. The goal of MLD is to move the skin in a certain direction. If you redden the skin then the MLD it too aggressive or there is too much friction on the skin.
1 set of the exercise 10 times, then move to the next exercise in the sequence. Your clearing out the space in the lymph vessels above to allow more lymphatic fluid to flow into that area and out through the lymph nodes as you pump upward.
I don't understand why one would need to massage his axillary in this case... because leg lymph (even butt lymph) goes anterior in the inguinal, then both legs go to cisterna chyli, then thoracic duct and finish up your left collar bone. So, for me, in this case, you must massage neck first, then abdominal, then the left leg (towards inguinal).

When you have bilateral leg lymphedema, you will have to move ipsilateral the lymph from your legs to your axillary lymph node (of the same side). You can do it one leg/side at a time. If you feel nauseous then stop, and try one leg and hours later or next day the other leg.
