  • Andrea Kimi Antonelli is potentially the most hotly tipped young driver in the history of Formula One, but I think if the rumours are true that he may make his debut for Williams at the next round of the championship in Imola, then it's an AWFUL decision, here's why...

      If he can't be worse (i doubt so very much he would be) then why not. I do not see Logan improving, I mean he hasnt in a year and a half, new regulations round the corner....man I cannot wait til these placeholder drivers are finally gone when 2026 roles around.

As someone who has been watching Logan every race (as a Big Williams fan, I pay 90% of the races, quali and free practises watching the Williams cars.) Logan has SIGNIFICANTLY improved, over 1 lap pace he has looked faster than Albon all weekend. Logans race pace is not far off Albon at all, never has, but its been getting closer. Last year Sargent in a sh*t box was around 0.4ths slower than Albon in quali. This year he has been around 0.2ths, many times being closer including the sprint quali which he was faster. Sargent was rushed into F1 too early, and has needed time to improve and grow. Also Sargent is now finally settled, and near Albons level. Yet your saying that Williams instead of believing in their own driver program should go back to being Mercedes B team instead of having the balls to be their own team with a backbone... Also Logan hasnt cost Williams this year... Taking Sargent out would be simply stupid, let alone replacing him with another rookie, whose not even loyal to Williams!! With that intelligence its a miracle your still alive. 'Placeholder drivers' is so stupid, what do you think is gonna happen in 2026 ? new regulations means that their will be new drivers - their is zero correlation and causation. Go find a different sport, maybe counting up to 10 might be the right challenge for you

    If he really is going to be put into that seat, it's going to be a massive gamble just like with placing Max in F1 at 17. It can go just as well as with Max, or it could horribly wrong like how Logan is doing now. For a backmarker team that needs a lot of shaping up to do, it's a gamble that shouldn't even be something they're thinking about.
    At the very least let him run through an F2 season first to see if he's ready before thinking about putting him in a seat. That would probably mean he'll get a debut by 2026 earliest, maybe in Williams if the tema decides to just keep him there until 2025 just to avoid having to find a driver to drive for just one year. I doubt he'll go straight up to Mercedes.

      Exactly. Sargeant was always regarded as a very big promise in the lower formulas, but he was pushed into F1 too early and well... We can see how that's going. We don't know if Kimi will be a Max or a Logan, and I'd rather wait until he's ready, than burn him in the same way Sargeant has.

    • @morvlad

      The thing is… Kimi is generally believed to be a generational talent - like Verstappen, like Leclerc, probably bigger than Norris and definitely bigger than Russell. If that’s who he truly is, it’s probably going to be hard to mess him up. You can literally just give him any seat, give him time and patiently wait for results - that’s how good he’s expected to be.
      When it comes to replacing Logan… every single person knows Logan is doomed, just like every single person knows Kimi is going to stay in F1 for quite a while. Williams have nothing to lose by putting Kimi in the car - Logan is slow anyway and crashes often anyway, so it’s not as if they’re taking a massive risk or something.

    • @dustinabigan2776
      @dustinabigan2776 14 дней назад +2

      @@morvlad Keyword there is "believed."
      Yes he might be the next Verstappen, but until then you'd rather play it safe. Because the last time someone was hyped to be good, that was Nyck de Vries and his F1 career fell apart in 10 races. For every Verstappen, there's a list of other drivers that were thought to be ready, only to make a mess of themselves or underperform.
      There's no guarantee that he won't end up like Logan on the simple reason that he doesn't much running in F1 cars or isn't ready yet. So until then if Merc really wants to send him to F1, 2025 would be earliest so that he can just focus on F2 and getting further testing and mileage in F1 cars through FP1 sessions. Until then, if Merc can play it safe, they likely would do so. At least for now it doesn't look like any team outside Merc and Williams are eyeing him for an F1 seat.

    • @morvlad
      @morvlad 14 дней назад

      @@dustinabigan2776 I actually don’t disagree with playing it safe right now - I personally would rather see him finish the year in F2. My point is that he’s probably too good to completely fail - and that’s why Williams want him.
      When it comes to early hype though… the teams have generally been able to find the absolute best talents for quite a while at this point. I would guess the last time such a hyped driver completely failed was Jan Magnussen back in the 90’s.
      Teams have managed to find Jenson Button (even if he wasn’t ready at the time of his debut), Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen… and that’s only talking about relatively inexperienced drivers - we also had Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, who ultimately also had no chance to fail.
      The only hyped one to “fail” was Stoffel Vandoorne - and his situation was so extreme that we can’t really even blame him.
      We can be pretty sure Antonelli won’t fail either.
      When it comes to Nyck de Vries… there’s a reason why he didn’t make it to F1 after winning F2, the hype was never there. He just accidentally impressed in one single race in Monza, and the following expectations were completely unrealistic.

    Only 1:30 into the video but had to stop you at “Closer the gravel trap than the podium” umm he the only time he wrecked was in a battle for a podium position in the sprint race and finished 4th the following day in the feature race. He hasn’t quite set the world alight so far but has made significant improvements race over race and hasn’t failed to finish in the points apart from that one sprint race. This was despite prema bottling the new F2 regulations especially evident in Baku.
    The same can’t be said about his high rated teammate Oliver Bearman who’s finished behind Kimi in every race so far despite it being his 2nd season of F2 over Kimi being a rookie that skipped F3 (which is a massive jump in car performance). I feel like there has been more hate towards the kid than hype.
    I’ve been following this kid since his Italian F4 championship (mostly because he uses the same racing number (12) as I did when I raced motocross as a kid and I’m a Mercedes fan) so of course I’m going to come to his defense a little harder than most would.
    Edit: I’ll agree throwing him into Williams mid season may not be the best thing but I do want him to see him go directly into the Mercedes seat in 2025. The lap times he’s put down in the recent imola test were not only very impressive but very consistent. And I do think you’re correct the super license would be to test in an FP1 session rather than replacing Logan.

    I don't think he's that crash happy, he actually has a pretty decent record for NOT crashing in his championship wins. And whilst his season start has been somewhat unlucky, he's shown signs already of his pace - he's already outperforming Bearman, and only getting better. To me, he looks like one of those special talents that would immediately thrive if given a chance, and whilst he might be more crash happy in F1 than a veteran, he'll almost certainly be ahead of a big chunk of the grid in this respect. He ain't no Mick Schumacher.
    He won't get his super license early, but he will get it this year, and I'm confident he'll be in F1 machinery before the year is out. FP1 most certainly, but I could see him in a cheeky race seat before the year is out.

    Bottas back to Merc for 2025 does make a huge amount of sense. He was actually incredible to watch when not under pressure of a contract and I think he'd be driving knowing it's probably his only season there and just make the most of it and enjoy it, I think he'd keep George on his feet. It fits the jigsaw pieces for Sainz at Audi if Max doesn't leave RB to Mercedes (I think it's unlikely he will now) as I don't think Perez is probably going anywhere next year if he can pull * enough * points in. That would be at Zhou's expense though which would be a shame, though it's probably inevitable anyway. It's not going to change Logan's outcome at the end of the year, he's not driving in 2025 but it'd feel harsh to kick him out before the end of the season, and Kimi can come in for 2025 through Williams, maybe follow a similar journey to Russell as you said. If he's a generational talent in the making then there's no harm in looking after his development and keeping him close until he's ready for a top seat. I'd be quite happy to see those line ups for next year and I think sets up a really interesting field, especially when you have Kimi vs Albon and some incredible rivalries in 3-4 other teams. Bottas not moving actually could change the face of the grid next year, the seat at Mercedes could draw in someone from any of those teams and entire line ups could look very different. Especially with Magnussen's contract in doubt, Hulk's seat vacant and the VCARB drivers/seats on the table. Not sure if the Alpine boys are safe long-term but I think that Mercedes '25 seat and in proxy this Williams '24 seat are key to how the grid looks next year.

    4:51 You don't require a super licence for a Friday free practice session. There is a much looser rule for this & it should not be a problem for underage drivers to take part in a free practice session on Friday.
    Basically, assuming all three committees of the FIA really agree, this would open the door for other super(talents) (from other junior squads) rising early to the top class of open wheel racing.
    Mercedes is doing everything it can too distract from the fact that this year's Formula 1 car feels even slower every weekend. I do believe that they are trying to secure this talent early on (preferably at Williams F1). Which could open the possibilty of even younger guys appearing in F1?
    Also, Kimi should not underestimate his market value & maybe look for alternatives.
    It will be interesting to see whether Kimi Antonelli's Formula 1 career really begins in mid-May.
