@@caelmcleish1212Eh, honestly Lifting shadows of a dream might just be my favorite DT song of them all. Is the most technical or complex and difficult. Nope. Is it just freaking beautiful? Hell yeah, but in the end, it´s just an opinion
Learning to live is basically the Soul of the Images and words album Waiting for sleep is like its intro and its well represented in the album cover art!
It's prog, but not for the sake of wanking or showing off. It's prog in that it uses interesting time sigs, and an unusual song structure to tell a story. Also a lot of interesting instrumental techniques on this song, and a fusion of a lot of different styles. Still one of DT's best songs.
One of the most beautiful prog songs ever made, and it’s not only for the technical part, every time signature fits so perfect within the context of the song. Images and word is just full of masterpieces
+Augusto Cardozo Weird time you should say now... they created 6 degrees of inner turbulence at the time and it is the best album ever created... some might say that Scenes from a memory is a masterpiece and the best, but 6doit is a gigantic album, look what they create nowadays and try to compare with 6doit, you just can't.
LaBrie has his moments... due to his injury, around the mid and late 90s some songs sound better (Metropolis 2 in New York is one of their best concerts, if not the best) and other worse than the studio versions, while at their beginning, he was simply perfect. Listen the Marquee live and it will fucking blow your mind. I think what makes LaBrie belong in DT is the fact that he always sings like it's the last show of his life.
I just wish he was as good these days as he was then. I think he sabatoged himself by singing incredibly difficult melodies when he could in his youth, and now that he’s older he simply doesn’t have the physiology to keep up with the songs he recorded.
Sundance 1992, Toronto 1993, Milwaukee 1993 rank as a few of the top best LaBrie performances, you can see some of them here on YT. James' best I've seen I was luckily at the show. October Austin TX 2012. He far surpassed my expectations that night like on the Score DVD.
oh my god, compare this with Dream Theater 2022, oh my god. what a difference. i mean, this here is much much better, with much less technique, just playing music, nothing in the background, just playing live. I love it.
Indeed, I know all about his injury and listened to all their live concerts so I know what you mean. He's a great singer to me and I don't care what anyone else belives.
...this is the video you send to someone who has 1. Never heard of DT 2. Is a musician of any sorts 3. Says prog sucks 4. Wants to hear a bad ass song!!! My favorite DT song EVER!!!
I think he was still recovering from his injury at the time, and unable to sing any higher without really straining his voice or cracking it... He eventually adapted to a new way of singing.
@Dieseldemen Actually, this video seems official... but I don't know if it has been officially released. You can find a live version (not this one actually), on cd "Live scenes from New York", also available on a dvd from the concert with the same name.
@Dieseldemen you just have to paste the url on youtube-mp3(dot)org, press "convertir" and "descargar" (download) it (the whole thing takes like one minute)
@bjk1795 exactly what i'm thinking...i tend to skip the first song everytime i listen to this album and just keep playing surrounded and learning to live over and over again hahah
some people think he's actually better live... I belive the live performance of "In the Name of God" at Budokan is better than the original song, for example.
VerdiKtagrad maybe song quality is "worse" but the band is in no way worse. Myung, Petrucci and Rudess can still play like they could in the early 2000s. As for Mangini, I don't really mind him and it's very subjective so I won't delve deeper into that.
Score is awesome, but I like Scenes from New York better. It's just my opinion, of course. My problem with Score is that I feel they didn't do a very good selection of songs, I mean... Innocence faded? Spirits Carries on? Vacant?... seriously? Is that the best they could come up with? Scenes from new york has no weak point, it's epic to the end.
it's Tama dude not Sabian , if there's some sound problem which i don't hear frankly , it's the Mix , no one to blame but the sound guy for those things
Well I do and saw DT live with Portnoy and Mangini, and certainly were great concerts, and very different, My opinion is that Mangini not working, do not take out this or accommodative issues in the Presence of Enemies, or the ministry of soul or octavarium, or in the name of god .........
I cannot think of a progressive band vocalist that is struggle so much to sing. It doesnt need to be Russel Allen, Jorn Lande, Roy Khan etc. but DT really deserve more.
well, spirit carries on definitely could have been replaced with something different as well. innocence faded definitely was chosen for the "condescending... NOT (F# on the not) intending to..." bit, to show the high note in this song, so I think. Yes, I agree with the response from MaintainTheFrogsBite on how the tone overall from Score was better, and James still didn't fully "recover" from his vocal injury in Scenes from New York. Every show in DT has its ups and downs Both had their moments
Omar Beydoun well the parts on this song weren't written by Jordan, so I see why someone could say that he's got no soul, because I don't think you can put more soul into an already soulful performance. That said, I really enjoy Jordan's parts in the albums with him on keys
Myung is like: "I don't always write songs... but when I do, it's the best song in the album"
It was the case with Trial of Tears and Breaking All Illusions. And Fatal Tragedy & Learning to live are classics as well
Just not quite the case with Lifting Shadows Off a Dream. But then that album is too full of perfect songs
Debatably. Between this and Metropolis.
Fatal Tragedy wasn't the best in the album. It was home

This is one of the best that Myung has wrote! Thumbs up for Myung!
he's a genius
It's The Greatest!
including Trail of Tears
One of DT's hardest and most underrated songs. So much prog it hurts! lol

The drum pattern at some parts is so randomand weird it's hard to memorize
most hardest song
One of the most beautiful prog songs ever made, and it’s not only for the technical part, every time signature fits so perfect within the context of the song. Images and word is just full of masterpieces
That weird time when Jordan had hair, but Petrucci doesn't

+Lucas Hajje Images & Words is the best
I know, then Rudess went bald and Petrucci grew a massive beard... life is strange xD
Looks like it might be a wig
Weird time signatures too tbh
Best song ever composed, specially from 8:21 to end
8:21 sounds like something that can be put as background music for rolling credits
Yeah, this part is awesome !
the best dream theater moment, miss those years..

It always kinda sucks seeing people shit on the guy. He still gives it his all, even if he doesn't sound like he did.
Yeah, by this time he was already beginning to have trouble maintaining his parts live. And this was 2002. But he was giving 100% for sure.
Eh....he seems to yell as much as actually sing.... stop yelling at us James!!
I like the "reggae" part at the end... these guys can play everything they want... AWESOME!
The one time in history where Jordan Rudess looks like Dave Grohl.
Naah he looks like Marco
Still their greatest song to date.

I listened to this for more than i can count. And Rudess solo is still a thing of beauty and calmness. Mfs really be writing magnificent songs.
Rudess did not write that solo
@bullymaguire7191 the first solo is Rudess improvisation, only after that he plays the original KM solo
hey thanks for the 22 seconds of John Myung
I was there! Greetings from Bucharest! :)
nice to see mates from my grandma's homeland
I had to watch and comment again. This is a classic performance of this jam. There's a synergy here that is missed.

DT playing reggae haha 9:17

Maybe my favorite DT song, was Myung even there? Did he fight with the cameramen?
The best live version of this song and also with Mangini on 2011🔥

You can't really tell unless you hear an album where he wrote his own drum part. (Not ADTOE)
Sweettt!
wow james was really struggling at 3:20
James has been struggling for 22 years
Oh God!! Jordan Rudess actually had hair?
The venue and Portnoy’s snare drum drives me nuts! The open concert field just f***ed up the sound and Sabian gave MP a crappy skin to play.
it's Tama dude not Sabian , if there's some sound problem which i don't hear frankly , it's the Mix , no one to blame but the sound guy for those things
Épico.
Only the lyrics, the music was written by the whole band (except the singer).

A high speed learning to live. Sorry James 😂
Yeah they played it fast here, but the 2011 live version with MM is even faster if I remember correctly
The video producer is obviously no musician
They hired illegal Aliens from Timbukstan to video this! They are only used to filming Akbar music so there is that!

Editing and autotune
the first and the last mistake of john petrucci-- 7:37
It's obvious why Mike left DT... James is 23% the singer he started out to be.

so no F# for us in this one :(
he does it in 2003 tho or at least does it again during the train of thought tour

this was the last song of a 3 hour show. would like to hear you hit all those notes perfectly.
this was also when he was still recovering from his vocal chord injury
