This may be the greatest performance of a contemporary piece of music ever recorded. I genuinely rank this up there with Pink Floyd's Echoes at Pompeii 72. There was something special in the air during this performance. They were firing on all cylinders, just making magic on that stage. With a full orchestra too. Damn.
The first time I heard this song I literally cried. It's one of the most epic songs ever with an insane amounts of nods to music history, but still has complete musical integrity. At times I listen to this soon several times each day, it's just that good.
Right, because DT's music is very easy to write. Petrucci studied a lot of theory, DT songs changes timing and tonality all the time, he also sings the notes he plays, that can be seen live when he sings backing vocals and in clinics, videos show him playing different instruments, ass well of having mastered a single instrument because he plays many techniques in the guitar, he engineers all the sounds he uses. He does a great job playing many different music styles. He's gone through A LOT!
fucking dream theater forever \m/ come back to this song after months, years still incredible , a band who truly loved music pinnacles their career with a 24 min epic that is tribute to music with allusions lyrical and musical rush queen pink floyd fucking dream theater forever \m/
I used listen to this song at night while riding my bike down a pitch black trail to a friends house in the next town over. That was freakin' trips, holy crap.
@josevivo octavarium also has 8 tracks on it (octa=8). it is also the 8th studio album from DT. not only do the beginning and ending of octavarium have the same note, but the beginning of root of all evil is the same note that in the name of god ends on (the last song in the previous album..dream theater did this for several albums, having that last song match up with the first song of the previous album)
Sailing on the seven seize the day tripper diem's ready Jack the ripper Owens Wilson Phillips and my supper's ready Lucy in the sky with diamond Dave's not here I come to save the Day for nightmare cinema show me the way to get back home again
Did you know that Octavarium represents an octave on the piano ? The first song of "The Root Of All Evil" starts with an F minor scale, and Octavarium ends in an F minor scale, an octave higher. Each song in between represent a white key on the piano and is played in the correspondant scale. It's not just about the first and last note of the album. The thought process behind the album is huge. Everything has been thought of. And that's only 1% of what i could talk about this album.
+demonhawk If you're talking about the thing underneath the continuum Thats neither a fretless keyboard or a keyboard, its called a lap steel guitar. So its actually a guitar.
@jacobs87 I'm a guitarist so even the guitar parts are amazing to me haha. Its not really the song itself that appeals to me, but more about how it makes you feel you know?
Although those in the orchestra are some very amazing musicians that definitely deserve a lot more credit than they probably got; I think it's a tad bold to claim they have more musical knowledge than any member of Dream Theater. All band members are very broad and well educated musicians and multi-instrumentalists, with many years of experience. I don't think it's all that obvious.
The quesion is: ¿Are you familiar with the training that Petrucci has gone through? He engeniered estrict, endless and complicated practice methods and sessions, he wrote all down, the strechedhis body before practicing, he played everything in every chord, every fret, every string, he trained himself in playing at diferen time structures (4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/5, etc), he went throught everything over and over again, hours and hours.
best intro and outro in music history and bets solos, and weirdest riffs and best theme, and... best song ever? probably not but at least on of my favourites
*flautist They're lucky to be playing with each other. She's lucky to be playing with such an amazing guitarist, and he's lucky to be playing with such a skilled musician. Why does it matter? It's an amazing collaboration either way.
A classical musician plays very accurate, flawlessly. Sounds familiar to me cause Petrucci plays very accurate, flawlessly. A classical musician plays in what ever time structure the put him, so does Petrucci. A classical musician can execute almost any musical piece, have you seen Petrucci playing many covers from very different artists from very different styles? He pulls off an entire Satriani song the same way Satriani plays it, and Satriani uses different techniques than Petrucci is used to
I thought Labrie always played the synthesizer while Jordan was playing the lapsteel guitar at 5:55 when the chords switch but I don't see anyone playing???
It's not about the knowledge, but the creativity. You don't need to be an expert in music theory (which all memebrs of DT are, anyway) to be a creative genius.
This is, in my opinion, the very best performance you´ll EVER find of this song!
.. when I saw Jordan Rudess solo I thought "this man is making love with his music".... amazing.....
2018 and DT still the love of my life. #1

I was at this show, second row stage right in front of John Myung. Incredible doesn't describe this. This was the highlight of the evening.
I get goosebumps just from that opening Fm chord. And then it just keeps going for nearly 6 whole minutes. So badass...
James vocal on this day was heavenly. His best performance probably up to present. I think NY Live and Budokan are closed matched as well.
7:30 beautiful flute 😍
Jordan Rudess looked like he was commanding a star battle ship!
God Rudess is just RIPPING on that fingerboard. What a legend.
did someone notice that YT deleted full-song clip :'(
i'm watch it every single day.
There's a "drum cam" version on YT that's uploaded. Search "Mike Portnoy - Octavarium - DrumCam"
Nutsaran Amrungkwaen yes, its terrible having to watch the split apart version
yup
i think so, this is sad haha
even Chile version can't fulfill me,
hope someone will upload this full version soon ^^
that's some fine starting music by Jordan and some lovely flute section
Shine on you Continuum Octavarium!
:).
DT, I love you, incredible music and talent...
I own this live album, and sometimes I will just listen to this intro because it is so long. I love the Continuum
I just love Jordan's face during the intro right before he switches to the lap guitar, he's all "That's right, I'm a badass."
coming back to this song after years!
This is a masterpiece! One of my favourite songs.
The flute in 7:30 is sooo beautiful it almost makes me cry

Jethro Tool, lol.
Nick Sm Jetro Tool is a plumber! Lol!!!
stopped listening to DT some years ago and started listening to some death metal, came back to this song today and it's still fcking amazing
True progressive metal never ever dies, my friend. :)
Same thing, but I switched to jazz/funk/fusion/soul. I'm having nostalgia trips these last couple of days :D
I still get tingles hearing and watching this. It's like Heavens soundtrack. These are THE musical Jedi masters of the world.
The LaBrie expressions and voice are just so epic... he gives that extra in the song
I laughed of Rudess' face at the end of continuum.
*I'm a God. I know, I know.*
Anyway, this song could be longer (2).
i can't imagine how they made this sound/melody/tone.. God of music
Esta cancion tiene todo, es hermosa! DT forever!

Holy Shit. didn't know that a keboard could sound like a guitar, awesome!
Cuase is a fretless keyboard.
+demonhawk If you're talking about the thing underneath the continuum Thats neither a fretless keyboard or a keyboard, its called a lap steel guitar.
So its actually a guitar.
+Chris W its played with a slide, notice the thing he's holding in his left hand. thats the slide
+Chris W the thing on top is called the continuum and its like a felt pad that reacts to your touch.. with a synthesized tone
@jacobs87 I'm a guitarist so even the guitar parts are amazing to me haha. Its not really the song itself that appeals to me, but more about how it makes you feel you know?

i wanna learn flute just to play this eye-watering melody

@MPresario21 you can't see it that well, but you're right. James is playing the keyboard strings while jordan plays the lap steel.
Dream Theater you are The Master.. The Master of Music Legend..
DREAM THEATER = 100% ART
It's quite obvious that these gentlemen learned from Pink Floyd :D and it's also quite obvious that it worked out very well :P

Fantastic song.
OCTAVARIUM....De lo mejor de este grupo.
genial! george de la selva!
You can't compare Stairway to Heaven and Octavarium... both are masterpieces.
OMG!!! this is music... great theme!!!
Petrucci and Myung have studied on Berklee, and after listening all their albums, I don't think that their musical knowledge is far from them.
And Portnoy
The bass at 11:48 is tremendous...
Best of...
The intro is heavily inspired by Pink Floyd as you can hear. 2 Perfect bands
WARNING: Totally fucking stupid arguments below, proceed with caution.
Koroar Holy crap you were right
best intro and outro in music history
and bets solos, and weirdest riffs

Liquid tension experiment flows through this ❤️
Jedno z najpiękniejszych wykonań tego códownego utworu...
The creativity of this song makes me cry
*flautist

The first and greatest song i've ever heard from DT
Great! Sounds very much like Pink Floyd though!
Some BIG Pink Floyd influence at the beginning. Sounds like the opening of Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
My God...
If Mozart were alive, he would be deaf after listening to all DT albums at 1000 db
Ah ah !!!
this is like the best song ever written. I think its better than Stairway To Heaven.
When jame Labrie could still sing
A classical musician plays very accurate, flawlessly. Sounds familiar to me cause Petrucci plays very accurate, flawlessly. i'm not allowed to like it more than once on youtube, but every time i watch this, i click on the like button anyway
Ah ah ah !!!
Still shine in 2018
absolutely breathtaking
Masterpiece
@jacobs87 I agree 99%. In fact, the only songs I love more than this are Voices by Dream Theater and Hotel California by the Eagles.
I always crying when listen this song
Very much like Shine on You Crazy Diamond, nearly note for note in fact.
Although I can't play it, I want that Continuum! Just for the awesomeness!
i believe thats what they were going for, awesome intro i agree
DT!!!!!! love you!!!!!!
I thought Labrie always played the synthesizer while Jordan was playing the lapsteel guitar at 5:55 when the chords switch but I don't see anyone playing???
He's got it queued up on his pedal in sequential order.
It's not about the knowledge, but the creativity. You don't need to be an expert in music theory (which all memebrs of DT are, anyway) to be a creative genius.

The flute solo gives me Kill Bill vol 1 vibes
This is some real Pink Floyd shit and if I had the money to buy this instrument, I’d make love to it JUST the way this man dod 👏
@6digit
When he was 9?
3:47 love it
@MrGuitarherokid69 And its impossible to get bored with octavarium.
there's something so peter gabriel/genesis- y about this especially around 9:00
@deafghost52 No, Jordan Rudess is the John Petrucci of keyboards.
8 minutes 35 seconds of pure Bliss. Then the song "starts"
...And another 60% pure godliness
3:48
the exact moment when he cum
the orchestra must be thinking: men! we have never played music as beautiful as this one
