I have to say I've always found Portnoy's playing very engaging, interesting.
He's always had the talent be flashy while playing exactly what the song asks for, always adding for the better. Say what you will about the guy, he's one of the most artful drummers in metal.
And yes, in the end, while I never cared much who plays as long as the music is right, I must admit current Dream Theater is but a shadow of what they were, and Mangini, as much as he is a technical powerhouse, sounds just plain uninteresting.

I don't get all the hate and criticism of James LaBrie's voice. His vocals send chills. I would like to know the reason behind all the negativity. Do you really want a death metal vocalist for Dream Theater? That's not right. For metal the two most common vocal styles are either the high-pitched vocals like in hard rock and heavy metal or the "screaming" kind of vocals like in death metal and black metal. James LaBrie is more of the old school heavy metal singer. Another big influence on him is Geddy Lee, another very high-pitched vocalist. It's hard to sing like that so that immediately is a reason for respect not hate. James' voice is more than fine and he has a very impressive vocal range. I personally love his singing. Maybe some of you personally don't like his singing but you must understand it's not easy to sing like that and he really can sing.

A lot of people would say that the solo is the best part but hear me out.
1- The song comes in with this really nice chord progression by JP.
2: Then the rythm track comes in with this sick drumbeat and bassline and supports the melody really nicely.

    Tell me
    Remind me
    Chase the water racing from
    the sky
    Always beside me
    Taste the memories running
    from my eyes
    Nervous flashlights scan my
    dreams
    Liquid shadows silence their
    screams
    I smile at the moon
    Chasing water from the sky
    I argue with the clouds
    Stealing beauty from my eyes
    Outside the soundness of your
    mind
Bathing your soul in silver tears
    Beneath a blackened summer sky
    Praying for time to disappear
    Beneath a summer sky
    Under glass moonlight
    Night awaits the lamb's arrival
    Liquid shadows crawl
    Silver teardrops fall
    The bride subsides to her
    survival
    By your hand
    I've awakened
Bear this honor in my name

Jordan rudess es un teclista tecnicamente impecable, pero sus solos no son tan expresivos como los de Kevin moore o los de Derek sherinian y es una pena porque su trabajo melódico en el disco Metropolis pt.2 es muy bueno.
