Steve Morse has said he liked Petrucci early on, but Morse noted when he heard this solo that Petrucci had finally figured out his own unique style and sound.
Oh I know the guitar solo is awesome, but really, does nobody wants to talk about the kickass drumming in this song.... OMG!! What a fuckin drummer !!!
I have to say I've always found Portnoy's playing very engaging, interesting. He's always had the talent be flashy while playing exactly what the song asks for, always adding for the better. Say what you will about the guy, he's one of the most artful drummers in metal. And yes, in the end, while I never cared much who plays as long as the music is right, I must admit current Dream Theater is but a shadow of what they were, and Mangini, as much as he is a technical powerhouse, sounds just plain uninteresting.

True. It more of a classical majestic theater yet I still jump up and down and mosh sometimes. It doesn't mean how you react to it but how it touches you.

I don't get all the hate and criticism of James LaBrie's voice. His vocals send chills. I would like to know the reason behind all the negativity. Do you really want a death metal vocalist for Dream Theater? That's not right. For metal the two most common vocal styles are either the high-pitched vocals like in hard rock and heavy metal or the "screaming" kind of vocals like in death metal and black metal. James LaBrie is more of the old school heavy metal singer. Another big influence on him is Geddy Lee, another very high-pitched vocalist. It's hard to sing like that so that immediately is a reason for respect not hate. James' voice is more than fine and he has a very impressive vocal range. I personally love his singing. Maybe some of you personally don't like his singing but you must understand it's not easy to sing like that and he really can sing.
Seen them live during ADTOE and my-oh-my, his vocals were superb. They played this as the encore and sounded JUST LIKE THIS. He may have the burden of age but has rarely lost the punch in his voice.
definitely one of the best solos in my book. the technic, the melody, the phrasing, everything is perfect. for me, it's really up there with "tornado of souls"
Great solo by Joe Petrucci. I wish more 'shredders' would follow him. What Dream Theater does is so much more progressive and musical than most of the Metal bands. There's just all sorts of great stuff happening here.
WHY does Jordan always has to butcher the keyboard solos of this song? Yes, the dude got INSANE skills and I consider him to be the best keyboard player on the planet, but come on. Wouldn't hurt to play some actual melodies instead of showing off every time -_- Kevin's version will always be the better one, imo.
Fuckin great performance by James Labrie. Will always be one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Thanks for making such wonderful music Dream Theater. Sincerely, a fan for life.
I get sick of people bashing LaBrie so much. If you know anything about DT, you know that they took heavy influences from bands like Yes, Rush, etc. Singers like Jon Anderson, Trevor Horn, and Geddy Lee didn't exactly have angel voices either.
Actually Lee's voice was too thin in the 70s but from the early 80s on developed more power, more timbre and resonance, while keeping great intonation. Keeping the pitch without just yelling has been a long term problem for LaBrie.
Back when LaBrie could actually sing. Even when his high register always sounded kind of annoying to me he did a really great job here. Nowadays he couldn't sing like this for shit.
