  • If there’s anything that we loved about our visit to the province of Ifugao, it’s the people who continue to preserve their traditions and protect their heritage. Our guide, Irene Binalet, was our beacon throughout these moments where we connected with the locals and the community of artisans. We will always be grateful for this opportunity to share these stories and these are just snippets from our memories that we will forever hold close to our hearts.

    It's kind of amazing how Cordillerans today are some of the chillest people on the planet. Considering their past as constantly-warring tribes less than a century ago. They have the serenity of continuity of culture. Unlike us lowlanders.

      It's because they had to find peace among themselves especially since they had a common enemy for hundreds of years and they could not have remained free to preserve the traditions, had they sought to kill each other. Tribal wars probably have started only when the common enemies have left. Some tribal wars were caused by sides between those who welcomed the Americans, those who didn't, those who have given refuge to criminals, and the conflict which the current generation know nothing of and just believe another is an enemy.

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens Год назад +1

      Fun fact: areca nuts and betel leaves were ORIGINALLY from the Philippines (where the areca nut is native). The oldest evidence of betel leaf and areca nut chewing is found in archaeological sites in the Philippines, dated to around 5,000 years ago. They spread with Austronesian migrations and maritime trade to New Guinea, other parts of Southeast Asia, southern China, and finally to Dravidian-speakers in Sri Lanka and southern India at around 3,500 years ago, which then spread to the rest of India less than 2000 years ago.
      It was formerly widespread in the Philippines. But started disappearing around a century ago when it was replaced with tobacco. It only survives among isolated highland groups like the Cordillerans, and among Muslim Filipinos in the southernmost island chains.

Not a long ago in Baguio, before i started college , i made visits with my family relatives an old woman , i sat with outside a store while waiting for my aunt shopping, told me after asking where i am from that we should change from the old days of uncivilized ways , i didn't bother to reply just smiled , but then what she said was insulting , just because ifugaos were once are headhunters it doesn't mean we are still living in the past - buti na lang mas disciplinado kami dahil sa kung paano kami pinalaki ng may respeto at mahirap na trabaho habang lumalaki , di katulad ngayon ang mga bata ngayon dahil lahat meron na at mahal na magkaroon ng pera ,daming vices , iba na pag uugali lalo na sa mga dating walang wala , yumayaman ng konti dahil sa pera , nakatuntong na sa mataas na kalabaw

    you know that your guide is a northern local when they switch from Filipino "Tagalog" to English just to complete the translation 😉...
    it's been years since I last went home to Sagada and watching this makes me feel so nostalgic...
    it reminded me of the time where we got to actually enjoy childhood in the province. where we ran around the fields playing tag, took turns with the 'bayo' - pounding the unmilled rice to show of that even a tiny city girl can hold on to the heavy wood, and swam in the clean river...
    this documentary brings back too many memories and i'm truly grateful to FEATR for what you do...
