  • In this video, I perform a compression test (and ultimately a leak down test) on a 7.3 I bought off of Craigslist. See what I learned!

    Try putting little oil in each cylinder, can help seal the piston rings,, and tapping on valves springs with a little hammer.(I've seen carbon build up, not allowing valve to seat all the way, sometimes by tapping on them it can break away build up, fixing issue)

      I tried that to see if they were hanging up, but results didn’t change. Thanks for watching!

    Depending on whether you wish to pull it out again later, if it was my keep daily, I'd rebuild it before putting it in, 😮 either way should be a good build, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones

      If you were buying a used truck that would look like a good engine! You are over thinking it. Once it actually gets hot and ran it will free up.

      Also my truck the kid hauled 35k loads of hay and I got it when he thought the transmission was done.

    Sounds like if you pulled the head and used valve grinding compound, you could get the intake valves to seat again.

      I don’t disagree. I still have that engine and will be tearing it down eventually.

    We are working this exact same problem! Please soak the tops of the Pistons in kerosene for a day take off the glow plugs and rotate the engine and then follow up with a day of nothing but carb cleaner same process. Spin the motor dry change the oil and repeat your cold and hot compression checks and leak downs. See if the rings free up out of the piston lands.
    Do this before the teardown and see if you get any appreciable improvement

      I think this engine is going to come back in the garage and get worked on, I’ll have to do some update videos once I get into it

    My favorite video on the tube for 7.3l compression. I appreciate your approach & logic. Did you pull the heads or run it?

      I “shelved” this engine, and found one with 180k miles that had over 400psi on every cylinder.

    Completely normal...7.tree is meant to be run every day ..when they sit for to long they loose all tolerances....my 2001 7.tree f2shity has 890 thousand miles...still stroking and purrs like a kitten 😸... 13 letter shitspreader INTERNATIONAL best diesel ever made....and simple to work on

    so i have a 1993 f350 4.3 w/ a banks sidewinder. i got a great deal on her because of a hard start/white smoke issue. she had multiple fuel leaks and shitty lines. i got all those fixed. it had the original injectors and glow plugs so i went ahead and replaced those. glowplug relay was also replaced. anyway the white smoke is pretty much gone but now i hear a puffing/hissing sound that sounds like its coming from the passenger side near the firewall. im thinking a vacuum leak somewhere.
    did you ever figure it out?

  • @Content7.3
    @Content7.3 Год назад +1

    That was a very good video. Do you know much about the valve issues with these truck. I’m almost certain that’s my issue

    • @Chasing518
      @Chasing518  Год назад

      Having taken 3 apart now, I can say it is definitely common for the intake valves to “eat/beat” their way into the heads, causing sealing issues.

    Weak valve springs or intake valve is recessing in the head

    • @Chasing518
      @Chasing518  7 месяцев назад +1

      100% agree with you on intake valves wearing into head. This engine will get some further investigation/work coming up.

  • @Content7.3

    I think I know why you are having anomalies. Is it possible that it has to do with little bit of oil falling into the cylinder from when removing the glow plug

    • @Chasing518
      @Chasing518  Год назад

      Quite possible that glow plug draining is playing a part, but i would have expected it to even out by the time I cranked most of the cylinders several times.

    • @Content7.3
      @Content7.3 Год назад

      Yeah you’re right. Just a guess, that may be another cause for your anomaly could be the temperature difference, causing the valves in the valve seats to expand and contract (i know with the piston rings we would expect the opposite effect).I noticed you got snap on stuff so it’s may not be your equipment. On my compression tester, I have a couple of variables I have to worry about. One is on my adapter. There is an o ring that where it looks like it would provide a seal, however the glow plugs don’t have an o ring. I don’t know if the amount of tightening I am doing plays a part in how good of a seal it makes into the cylinder. And I don’t understand what seals the glow plugs if there is no o ring on the plugs. The other issue I have had with my compression tester is the Schrader valves. (One in the tip of the adapter and one on the gauges hose inside the quick connect.

  • @kennethmabus381
    @kennethmabus381 Год назад +1

    Does your compression tester have a air stem in the glow plug insert and the Schrader on the Guage?

    • @Chasing518
      @Chasing518  Год назад

      The Schrader is at the bottom where it screws into the head.

    I’d run it. This is coming from another off-road guy with a 7.3 tow rig that has almost 400k miles on it and only has run junkyard motors in my 4x4s so take it with a grain of salt lol

    • @Chasing518
      @Chasing518  Год назад +2

      I hear ya. This engine also has some poor performing injectors which are very noticeable on the run stand. It would be a fun experiment to just put some fresh injectors in it and run it for a bit to see if the compression improves at all.
