A lot of people have been mentioning in the comments that all of the Mega Man incarnations (X, Volnutt, EXE, etc.) are actually different characters, so calling them "redesigns" isn't really correct, and I can definitely understand that stance. From my perspective, though, while X, Volnutt, EXE and the others are all their own separate people, they are all still Mega Man. Kind of like how even though there are multiple people who take on the role of Spider-Man, like Peter Parker, Ben Reilly, Miles Morales, etc., they are all still Spider-Man. Or kinda like how there are multiple heroes in the Zelda series, like the Hero of Time in Ocarina of Time or the Hero of Winds in The Wind Waker, but they're all still Link. So when calling the other Mega Man incarnations "redesigns", I meant it in more of a broader meta sense in relation to the character. Sorry for the confusion, I should've explained it in the video. Take care, y'all!

What bothered me more was that you called the buster a dragon when it's meant to be a wolf lol
I'm just now thinking that the redesign to his buster might be a metaphor that by the time SF3 happens he's no longer a "lone wolf" since in the first two games he goes through the character arc of learning to trust people.

It's just my opinion, but I think that you aren't SUPPOSED to like Samus' fusion suit. The whole reason Fusion succeeds in being something of a horror game is by taking past series elements and turning them on their head. Enemies are just X in disguise, bosses from series past are turned into horrific monstrosities, and the SA-X hunts you down every corner. Importantly, the SA-X has the classic Varia suit, and Samus doesn't. The SA-X represents what you have lost.

Breath of the Wild’s Link redesign was incredibly successful somehow.
They ditched his green tunic and his hat for all official artwork. Of course you can unlock/find the old gear in the game, but the promotion/art all features link in the champions tunic with no hat and yet it still instantly reads as link and from my memory there wasn’t really any backlash or adjustment period for people to get used to this new link.

One of the reasons to EXE’s large cuffs is to make the attacks he uses seem like it could come out of his arm naturally. The hand fades and transforms into a sword, larger buster, whatever chip he’s using and the cuff helps keep it look like it all comes from the same place

Samus looking "alien-like" in fusion was completely intentional, it was to show that she had just survived a attack from a creature that almost "digested" and assimilated her.
And, her appearance in Dread is a in-between of her look from Fusion and the varia suit. Showing that she still recovering from her "close-death-experience".
On a side note, Samus also got a redesign in Metroid Prime 3. Where she got infected with Phazon, and got extra equipment fused into her armor to help control the spread of the infection.

X, Volnutt, EXE, and StarForce are all actually entirely different character, who are only classifiable as "redesigns" from an out-of-universe perspective.
While the classic Mega Man is meant to be one of the firsts of his kind of advanced robots in his time, X was meant to be a much more advanced creation whose "AI" is pretty much human.
Volnutt is entirely unrelated to any previous Mega Man, and is actually just a Carbon (selfthought humans but whose bodies appear to constitute of machinery; to the point where "surgery" and "machine repair" are almost synonymous to them). His "blocky" attire is actually a tough digger suit, meant to have strong physical resistance as he goes around exploring dungeons for energy sources that can be sold for money.
MegaMan.EXE, as you very nicely put it, is a program; a very advanced program with human-like AI, that is classified as NetNavis (shorthand for Internet Navigators). His sleek design is basically a "well-optimized" teenage MegaMan, which works really well in tandem with his Net Operator, Lan Hikari.
Idk much about StarForce, but apparently he's some kind of ElectroMagnetic suit/form for a kid named Geo Stelar, and that is granted to him by the alien Omega-Xis, who is also his buster in the first two games.
Oh, and also, Samus's Fusion and Dread suits are actually separate suits. You get her iconic look back at the end of Fusion iirc.

Another character that has a surprisingly drastic redesign who was not mentioned in the video is Klonoa; when Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil was being worked on, the devs made it so that Klonoa himself would be a little older and more mature due to it taking place several years after Door To Phantomile, with Klonoa going from being a 9 year old to that of a 13-14 year old. To reflect this, Klonoa was given a new redesign; his collar, red shorts and brown shoes were traded for a blue zipper get-up with red shoes, which in my personal opinion has got to be the best drip I've ever laid my eyes on. Seriously, I'm not a cosplayer or anything, but if I had to cosplay as just one character, it'd be modern Klonoa.
In addition, Klonoa now wore his hat backwards, and his eyes went from being more cat-like to being more Sonic-like. I honestly don't care that he looks more like a Sonic character than he did before, and while the original Door To Phantomile design does have an edge in cuteness, the Lunatea's Veil design is still awesome and serves as a phenomenal take on an older, more mature Klonoa.
Now, while I do consider that design to be Klonoa's modern look, this hasn't stopped Bandai Namco from giving him new outfits on occasion, with the most notable of these being the default outfit in the Klonoa: Door To Phantomile Wiimake, which harkens back to the original design but with a modernized twist. It's an alright design, even if it does remind me alot of Sora. Interestingly enough though, when the Wiimake was being localized in 2009, there were plans to heavily overhaul Klonoa's design for overseas markets, essentially ridding him of his iconic floppy-ears in favor of more bat-like ears. Thankfully, due to fan backlash, Bandai Namco took the hint and Klonoa got to keep his floppy-ears overseas. Wahoo, indeed!

There's more to the designs than you mention.
You should have compared to the way OG Mega Man looked all the back in the first two games (where had a more play-dough feel to his design) and then compared it with his designs from Mega Man 8 all to the way to 11; especially as you can now see seam-lines near his arms in his official artwork for MM11. Heck, his design alteration in MM11 might be very well the result of Dr. Light wanting to make it easier to do maintenance on him. Heck, Roll herself has been given two notable design changes. My favorite is the one introduced with MM8, but I still like her MM11 design as well. O r Wily, who looked like a more normal scientist, but over time because the truly evil creator of the Zero virus both in terms of writing and design.
Mega Man X and others are their own separate entity. You could have taken a look at the way he was drawn at first. Then take a look at his most famous design from MMX5 to MMX7. When it came time for MMX8, they wanted a design that was easier to animate for cutscenes. Therefore, he has a notably different design with that title and while not as famous of a design, I like how X looks in that game.
Heck, Zero was originally supposed to be X himself. His design in Maverick Hunter X is an accurate reflection of what he looked like initially. However; after sacrificing himself, he was fully put back together and finally had both the shoulder pads and Z-Saber that Wily intended for him originally. Then there's the Mega Man Zero series where his orignal body was hijacked by Omega. He had a new body constructed and while it's strange his face looks younger, I do like how his armor now looks more like clothing and he has the coolest version of the Z-Saber.
Shifting into focus with Metroid; I know that Other M is quite bad. However, the Varia Suit in that game still manages to look good and it was refined for SSB4/SSB Ultimate; resulting in her best design so far with the Smash series. You could have talked more about the Power Suit itself; where it becomes modernized with Metroid 2, Super Metroid, and Metroid Zero Mission. There are also different design interpretations of it in Samus Returns and Metroid Prime. Although admittedly the Power Suit we see in Prime and all the way up to Super Metroid is technically not the same Power Suit she had in Zero Mission. Going over to the Varia Suit, the first version of it in Zero Mission pays homage to the fact the Varia Suit didn't originally have the big basketball shoulder pads. Instead, it was a simple color change design. Though this one is a deep shade of orange instead of pink. The Fusion Suit is not the Varia Suit itself. If anything, the Omega Suit becomes Dread's Varia Suit and the Fusion Suit replaced the previous two Power Suits (the first one being in Zero Mission and the second one being lost at the start of Fusion; same with the pre-Dread Varia Suit). She essentially has a new Power Suit in Dread as a result of that. Although obviously her suits are still healing in Dread despite essentially being new ones.

Yes, the metroid fusion power suit looks more alien, but that's the point. Samus' suit gets removed almost entirely and then she gets mutated into a metroid halfbreed, with the suit mutaing accordingly, so of course it looks alien, it's literally half alien now. Samus helmet is now shaped like a metroid larvae with fangs at the bottom and she now has 3 spheres in a triangular shape resembling metroids' core in her back. It also makes her look and feel waaaaay more vulnerable, which makes the horror atmosphere of Fusion believable.

I will always have a soft spot for the Fusion Suit, even if the Varia Suit colors were terrible. The initial blue color of the Fusion suit being the polar opposite of the iconic orange of the Varia suit really struck me when you're being chased by the SA-X, and the darker purple of the Gravity suit (as opposed to Super Metroid's pinkish Gravity suit color.) was pretty much perfect. The Fusion suit is just the iconic power suit cut down to its base level, and I love how you can still see the underlying musculature of the Fusion suit underneath Dread's Power suit, as it's in the process of healing since Fusion.
Also while Classic Sonic is a great design and has that simplistic charm, I will always prefer the "Green Eyes" design. I believe that design embodies Sonic's free spirited and fun-loving attitude more than his more Mickey Mouse-esque design.

I actually like the Other M Varia Suit design. Yeah the game it's from is one of the worst Metroid games ever. But that doesn't make the Varia Suit itself automatically bad. Dante from Devil May Cry 2 is one of his coolest designs; despite said design coming from the worst game in that series.
Heck, Sakurai's team improved upon the design with altered lining and making the suit somewhat beefier. It's easily Samus's best look in Super Smash Bros; especially compared to the designs that came before that. Her 64 design has to be forgiven, especially as Sakurai didn't have access to a large budget the first time around. Sadly, however, her Super Metroid Varia and even Gravity Suit designs didn't translate all that well to Super Smash Bros Melee. She would receive a new design in Brawl that looks like it was partly inspired by Metroid Prime (seems he felt a more direct translation of the Prime design would have been too tanky feeling in Smash Bros). However, this design has always been controversial and understandably was ditched after that. When it comes time for SSB6, hopefully Nintendo doesn't fully abandon the aesthetics from the recent installments. Hopefully if anything the SSB4/Ultimate design can be used as inspiration for an even better looking Smash Bros Varia Suit.
Going back to Other M; while I like how the suit looks in orange; the mustard yellow Power Suit version is more so meh. It's ironic, because the Super Metroid version of the Power Suit was also a similar color to that. However, I'd say I still prefer Super's since not only was that suit rendered in a 2d game (especially for the ending); making the color not work as much against the overall look, it also had the basic shoulder pads that make more sense than the more rounded ones on the Other M design. It helps Super Metroid has the excuse that it was moving the Power Suits in general closer to modernization.

I think you probably described the best character redesigns or at least most significant ones in this video alone. When it comes to Sonic I actually prefer the modern design that's basically been around since Sonic adventure 1. I think it's more defined. And this is coming from somebody who grew up in the '90s and actually played the classic Genesis Sonic games when they were new. I like the classic design a lot I think it's got a nice design, but his eyes are black I mean come on who has eyes that are just pure black? Granted yes I think you could see that on animals in real life sort of but usually there's more than just the pupil. The classic design it looks like you just has the little dots that are in the pupils and not what comes around it in color. So I appreciate that they actually gave Sonic's eyes a look that is more realistic by making them green. But I do like his more defined design.
When it comes to Samus it's kind of hard to look past her varia suit. I mean sure her new suit design in Metroid Dread is pretty cool but I can't help it I like those thick shoulders her suit has in the much more common design we're used to and a variety of Metroid games and all of the Super smash Bros games.
I absolutely appreciate that all the different mega Man designs since they're not even all the same robot and like you said one of them was actually a computer program, I appreciate that they still resemble mega Man's original design while having a lot of other unique characteristics. That I think is really cool.

This is the first Kiro video I've ever seen. And WOW, what a mess it is. You have successfully pissed off the entire Mega Man fanbase (myself included). Thats quite the feat. Do some basic research next time and maybe you won't have the entire comment section on your ass.
And don't get me started on this: "From my perspective, though, while X, Volnutt, EXE and the others are all their own separate people, they are all still Mega Man. Take care, y'all!"
Yea no. their not all "spider man". their their own people (granted Ben's a clone so ill let that one slide.) Different people from different universes ect with their own looks and personalities. Just cause their all spider man doesn't make them Peter Parker. That would make Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen Earth-65) Peter Parker. SPOILERS. She's not and he's dead there. And the Link argument? Literally every game its a different person from the last (with some exceptions like Majora's Mask.) Seriously? Dude go do research BEFORE making videos. Clearly you need it.

sports tape helps with sprains, injuries and cramps, so it gives a touch of "realism" to sonic and friends because well, it's basically saying they CAN get hurt.

  • @panayiotianavas3380
    @panayiotianavas3380 Год назад +2

Volnutt's blocky design is result of the graphics limitations of the Playstation, and he's actually a cyborg, with a body replacement below the neck in order to work in mines or caverns of some kind. Even his hair style is a result of what PlayStation polygons can do. His design is also meant to be a more blantant callback to his predecessor Rock, as the classic lore does play a part in the plot of the first game, appearing in ficitonal works around Volnutt's home town despite both subseries being in the same timeline, but millenia apart. The only other Mega Men with human portions physically as a subseries mascot are Geo Stellar (Star Force) and Aile (ZX). What exactly a Mega Man is changes throughout the timeline.
I feel like you could have compared redesigns of the same character on that one, most are art style changes. As far as most design changes, Rock (classic) and Zero (who has his own games and redesigns even in the X games, fhe design you used of him doesn't appear until X2). Zero's are likely due to him constantly sacrificing himself and just going through chassis like most people go through phone cases. I could go on almost all day about redesigns of Rock, just from official art for the games. There's changes to how joints appear, vents, the whole "aged up very slightly" thing in 7 and 8, but used nowhere else, how the copy ability armor color changes vary appearance throughout the series, how his face is drawn, which designs are similar, etc. Volnutt is the only one to not change color scheme when getting a new weapon to my knowledge, if you include the Double Soul and Style Change systems from Battle Network or whatever the version exclusive forms on Starforce box art are. I could talk about X's armors for quite a while, just from model kits, and I'm not even a huge fan of the guy.

like giving him tattoos which doesn't look good in my taste, or how Its About Time redesigned him again from how he looked in the N. Sane Trilogy which was much more closer to his classic look (and then there's his design in Skylanders which I think looks alright but not better than how he looks now, but still much better than the tattoo area)
Bowser also had a few redesigns, like how he used to be green in the Super Show, before he became how we know him as today
you could also look at the Street Fighter characters like Ken and Ryu, tho they mainly kept the same look, they have changed
you could also look at all the different redesigns of Link from Zelda, who gets a new look in every game, except a few here and there like the once I like to refer to as the Toon Link games
talking about Pokémon redesigns and you can look at Ash, from the original series, to X and Y were he looks older and cooler, to Sun and Moon which despite the different artstyle doesn't really work for me, to me that was a huge let down coming from the X and Y anime

I wish you emphasized how Megaman Xs design changes wildly as he collects armor pieces, cuz it kinda gives off a vibe of the character X and the player both growing beyond the limits of that Classic design both artistically and thru gameplay.
The more you deviate from the Classic Megaman design with armor parts, the stronger your abilities become, beyond that of what Classic could do up to that point, and the armor color and designs matching up with Zero kinda pulls you into this new form of X.
I wish X would have kept his armor look as the default in X2 because of this, cuz I always thought of the armor as a permanent change rather than as a transformation. I'd hoped that the classic series getting representation elsewhere with the Gameboy games and the Wily Wars meant that X was going to have his new look represent the franchise going forward and being more experimental like how the Mario sequels did it, while the Classic series stayed more true to its roots with iterative updates like Sonic.
Sadly tho, X2 came out and it ended up being a repeat of the formula. I always wonder what might have been.

Other arguably good design changes that could be brought up include:
    -Slimming down Pikachu.
-Mario; especially as his nose went from being really big in Super Mario 64 to something more reasonable proportioned by the time of Super Mario Galaxy.
-Klonoa's design since the second game (with the most notable exceptions being the two remakes to the original Klonoa game; with the second remake is more faithful to his original design concept).
-Dr. Eggman since Sonic Adventure and his Sonic Boom design (he easily has the best Boom design).
-Amy Rose in Sonic Boom (better outfit than her main outfits in the other spinoff games and the primary Sonic titles).
-Ganondorf in Twilight Princess and Tears of the Kingdom (so far).
-Fox McCloud and his crew with Star Fox 64.
-Krystal received a much better outfit in Star Fox Assault. While she looks fine in pink with Command, I still like her Assault look the best.
-If we could include vehicles; the Great Fox in Star Fox Assault.
-Arwing 2 in Command compared to Assault.
-Little Mac went from being a normal sized person with green hair and being displayed as a wire-frame to famously being a petite dude with black hair (the only exception since then being the SNES version of Super Punch-Out).
-Many of the characters from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (especially with how beautiful Palla has become over time and how cool Legendary Marth looks in Fire Emblem Heroes).
-Safe to say the character designs in Shadows of Valentia are remembered much more than their original Gaiden counterparts in nearly all cases. Though the original Alm and Celica still have their fans; especially as Hidari payed homage to them in Fire Emblem Heroes.
-Dr. Wily by the time of Mega Man 7.
    -Roll in Mega Man 8.
-Dante in Devil May Cry 5.
-Pit, Paluteena, and Medusa in Kid Icarus Uprising.
-Dracula and Alucard in Symphony of the Night; what a truly terrific night for such memorable designs.
-Gravemind in Halo 2 remastered; he actually looks truly ominous unlike his original counterpart.
-Master Chief wrecks his Mark 5 suit during re-entry and is replaced by his Mark 6 gen 1 suit. While I like his Mark 6 gen 3 suit in Infinite, his gen 1 suit looks so cool in Halo 2 and 3.
-Sly Cooper in Sly 2 and 3.
-Jak in Jak 3; he looks good in Jak 2 as well but I quite like how he looks in the game after that one.
-Ratchet in Nexus and Rift Apart; it took a while for them to get to that point as he initially looked rough during the PS3 era.
-GLaDOS in Portal 2 feels even bigger and thankfully is more expressive.
-Sora, Kairi, and Riku in Kingdom Hearts 2
    -Half Life 2 Eli Vance.

What about master chief’s multiple armors over the years? It’s cool that they had more reason to make his appearance change (unless it’s halo 4, nanobots my ass)

How’s it a “redesign” if the megaman from legends is a different person? All the megamen in each series are different people, they aren’t the same person as classic megaman.

X's design was meant to be "safe and uninteresting" to contrast with his look when he is fully decked out in armor. Zero's design is all over the place especially with the green tits. I prefer Zero's design in the Zero series.

Most epic recent redesigns we got are Samus in Metroid Dread, Shulk in the Xenoblade 3 DLC and Ganondorf in Tears of the Kingdom.
If Nintendo were to ever bring back K. Rool in anything Donkey Kong related I wonder how they’d go about redesigning him (if they ever thought about it) despite Rare creating the character.
