I love this take from Xiangjian, because it holds through to this very day. Modern-day folks may not be fighting for an emperor's favour, but so many have children for the wrong reasons. No child should be forced to live out their parents' unattained desires or be treated as an insurance plan for when the parents grow old.
And yet, so many people don’t understand this point
Nor be forced to have a child in order to make a partner stay with you or save a marriage.
I'm so glad Lady Rong gave the Emperor a dose of his own medicine by treating him badly and rejecting him like he did to Ruyi
The fact that Ruyi knew she would be blame for all of this and still put Lady Rong right to choose first is the reason why those who knew the Real Ruyi were so fiercely loyal to her. She respected their desires and listen to their thoughts, never judging them, making sure that even if she personally did not agreed with them she would still respect their points of view and try to understand where they were coming from. Its so damn sad she suffered so much just because she fell inlove with a piece of garbage of a human.
This solved the problem of the emperor having his plaything and the empress dowager needing her son to insert elsewhere and have peace in the harem. She was charged with doing 2 opposite tasks. The concubine was too much a favorite. If she could have kids her kids would be favored. That would really set the rest of the harem off. His mother wanted him to constantly produce heirs. Because she was infertile he would have to spend time with the others. You can not help who you fall in love with. Neither Ruyi nor the Emperor.

I understand how the empress feels being blamed of things you didn't do. I admire how strong she is. I don't have that braveness she has. 😔
This was by far the worst slap he’s laid on her in my opinion, not even when she broke his heart. But I loved concubine Rong, she was so loyal to Ruyi and truly felt so remorseful once she saw Ruyi’s unrequited love. Always gets me :(
Rong even stands up for Ruyi to the emperor, saying how he shouldn't treat Ruyi like that and how she wanted to not have kids anyway.

Sigh, both Ruyi and a Lady Rong were the bravest women. I don't know if i could even do some of what they did. Ruyi was always the kindess if not most strict. Willing to take blames for things she didn't do. Emperor do know what kind of person she is, but he's using her to vent his anger. Bad emperor.
I find it interesting that the emperor was so blinded by his infatuation that he refused to believe Noble Lady Rong made the choice herself. She requested the medicine and refused to have his children. He couldn't believe it was her choice to reject him in that way. She tells him it was her decision several times and that his anger is misplaced. Still, even many years later, the emperor refused to believe it and cast the blame on everyone else except her and, of course ultimately, himself.
Lady Rong was hopeless on her own life but she is in the same time the only person down to earth. By drinking this potion, is a act of freedom revendication…in the harem, women has no choice and she made one.
I appreciate how this show demonstrates the deep understanding between Rong and Ruyi, they truly understood each other.

The thing I hate about this other than the slap was that Ruyi didn't want to do it the Emperor Dowager gave her no choice then Consort Rong chose to drink it. I love Consort Rong but she didn't think about how this would affect Ruyi the Emperor held this over Ruyi's head for years no matter how many times Consort Rong said it was her choice. I understand she didn't want that fool's baby but it would had been better if she went straight to the Empress Dowager like the other concubines instead of Ruyi. What makes it worse he did all that just to end up treating Consort Rong like the other concubines years later so he basically slapped Ruyi for nothing.

Her dislike for RuYi was part of the reason why people picked on RuYi though. RuYi was intended to be the primary wife and Empress Dowager and his father objected to it at the time.
But in the end, she realised that RuYi was nothing like her Aunt and was true to herself and genuinely looked out for others that she grew to respect. RuYi never wanted power and titles. She just wanted to be a good human.
