I love how Hailan has a hand in destroying all of Ruyi's obstacles. Ruyi's true love in the palace!
Hailan feels (and kinda does) owe Ryui a lot, and in some cases her literal life. So in her mind she owes it to protect Ryui and is her unknown hand in the shadows who will defend her no matter what.

I strongly believe if Hailan was born into a powerful noble family she would’ve made a great empress. She’s kind and virtuous like Empress Ula-Nara , however cunning and realistic like the Empress Dowager. Our Ruyi was too good of a person to handle the imperial harem life. It’s no wonder that at the end only Hailan was amongst the originals at the end.

@@longinusgalaxy411 Hailan conspired by having that conversation infront of the Noble Consorts son so that he would eavesdrop and relay the message to his mother, which was to not cry at the funeral as way of showing strength for his father, she knew that they would fall for it and that it would upset the emperor; ruling her out as an option for step empress. She knew Ruyi would be the best choice as she was neither cruel nor interested in power.

Their bonus mothers funeral. They spent almost no time with. Their role was not to be strong. Their role was to perform the mourning rituals correctly. To not perform mourning rituals correctly was to inflict misfortune on the dead, emperor, family and country. One of the concubines/consorts/noble ladies said it best to one of the sons. Do not ‘try’ for throne. Blend in. Be invisible.

When u take away the royal titles and money, u can see that the emperor is just an abusive man. I love Hailan, she is my favorite in the show. She reminds me of Noble Lady Shen Mei from Empresses in the Palace. Both of them did not take no crap from no one and realized the the Emperors were were ruthless.
I think only consort chun's maid is wise to advice her mistress towards kindness. The rest of gugus only advice their mistress to seize power.

She didn't get the funeral of a step empress. She was down graded because she had told the emperor to take a hike.
@BlackVenus Yes her dying wish was to be free from the palace. As for weather or not the emperor didn't make a fuss because he was honoring her wishes... yes and no.
He did want to respect her wishes, but he was also angry that she rebuffed him. How many times did he do something for the image he wanted to portray opposed to weather it was the right thing to do?
He knew the first empress was not virtuous and wanted to be free from the palace in the next world, yet he gave her the proper funeral.
He then lied to not only the world but himself about her character. Had he respected her wishes she would not have had the state funeral.
In denying her the funeral he was striking out at her. He also gave her enemies the satisfaction that they won in the end.
Of course according to those who read the book Ruyi committed suicide right after Ling Luche's death. That fact changes the entire picture. (Not to mention changing the entire end of the story ) There's no way he would give her a state funeral then, no matter what he felt towards her.
@BlackVenus As you said her funeral in the show was more genuine because the emperor wasn't there. I have yet to read the book, so I don't know how it compares to the tv show.

@@pestolover she knew Consort Chun was scheming to become the next empress (when he was going to choose Ruyi) and have one of her sons become the Emperor’s successor. Hailan staged that scene where she tells her own son not to cry during the funeral because she knew Chun’s son would eavesdrop and try that strategy himself. But Hailan knew it would backfire on him.
@@pestolover this video doesn’t include it, but there’s another scene where Chun’s son goes to her before the funeral and tells her what Hailan said. Chun tells him not to cry at the funeral so he’ll gain his father’s favor instead. But of course the Emperor saw right through it.

I'm not sure the reason behind the action but it is a practice in chinese culture, in Taoism believe. I will try to explain as much as I could. We do not wear the "mourning garment" in our daily life.
For example, when my grandmother passed away and her wake was 3 days. For that 3 days wake, her children, their spouse and grandchildren have to wear what was known as a "mourning garment" which consist of a white t-shirt with a pin n black pants(this was in year 2020 so yeah, it is still practiced nowadays).
We are to wear the same shirt and pants for that 3 days whenever we are at wake (mind you, we are not allowed to wash that set of clothing for the whole 3 days n don't accidentally mix up with someone's else).
However, if we need to leave the wake location, we must leave the "mourning garment" at the wake location and change back to our daily clothes b4 heading out like maybe to get something from the store or going home for the night. However, when we are at wake, we must wear back the outfit.
I believe that is why her outfit changed from the scene she is at the funeral and when she is back at her own Palace. It has to do with the practices during a funeral in Chinese culture.
For clarity, my grandmother was buried according to Taoism rites and practices so I am only explaining it from my experience during her funeral n burial. I believe not every Chinese funeral practices this.
