I've owned boats all my life. 1st one at 15. Now I'm 74. No regrets . They provided fun and love with my children then my grandchildren. Then myself. Yes they are expensive to maintain. But they also kept me alive and I have some great photos of this family. And even more memories
Dipstick tubes on Mercury Marine engines and most marine engines go right to the bottom of the pan ( they actually run down to where the oil pan drain plug would be.) You can push a hose over the end of the tube and draw all the oil out with a vacume pump. Much easier than the drill pump method. And the vacume pump is great to have around for sucking out old fuel or antifreeze around the shop. Hope that helps! Love your boat! I'm a Mercury marine tech way up in Saskatchewan Canada.
They make "tenting" poles for canvas boat covers, to prevent the water from pooling.
The "CATS" are making divets on the cover
I pull the out drive every season to grease the U joints and check for water leaking into the bellows.
If water gets in it will rust the needles bearings in the U joint and when it fails it will take out the bellows, happened to a friend, I had to make an emergency run with the trailer as he was sinking.
Also, clean bilge, no leaves or anything that can block the bilge pump.

I have a small engine shop and we use vacuum pumps for oil change all the time.
We find the vac pump thru the dipstick hole actually pulls more oil out, bellow the drain hole.
And you can pump it up and walk away, vac does the rest.

Was gonna comment similar I use to work at Mercedes’ and we used a vacuum pump for our oil changes. First time I did it I pulled the oil drain plug after cause I didn’t trust it. Not even one drop came out.
I left our Bimini top up and made side panels out of HF heavy duty tarp. I added zippers and snaps to each one. I basically made a 4500 custom enclosure for 400 bucks including the sewing machine.
Boat stayed clean on the inside during the winter and all moisture would evaporate through the Bimini top fabric. Looks really good also. I’ll be using these for patterns when I make my enclosure out of sunbrella material..

I've been a mechanic a long time. I use a Pela 6000 to suck out oil.
Any model I haven't done before. I use the sucker, then pull the sump plug to see if it left any. For all the people telling you that it won't get all the oil = Wrong! I've only found 3 older style cars that have a baffle around the dipstick that make it hard to extract the oil. In all others, it actually gets more than pulling the sump plug! Most modern engines (2000
The engine oil should be changed every 100 hours or once per season. It is best to change the oil before the boat is stored so that fresh oil is on the bearings for the duration of the storage period vs. the old oil.
Check the dipstick tube to see if it has a garden hose male fitting at the top. If it does, Mercury sells a pump that threads on to the fitting. It's a hand pump but it works very well and takes about a minute to pump out the oil. Don't worry about not getting all the oil out - the amount that remains in the oil pan is less than 4 ounces. I used to use a cut down milk jug and pull the drain plug but when I realized how little oil remained in the pan, I stopped doing that.
Seriously consider a cover for the winter - not the snap on cockpit type cover but a canvas type tarp that breathes and a wood underframe so the water can drain off. If you keep the pitch high enough, the cats won't be able to lay on it. Leaving the boat exposed will rot the upholstery, cause electrical issues, etc.
Are the trim tabs Bennett tabs? If so and if the 20 amp fuse feeds the trim tabs and it blows when you activate the tab switches, the issue could be a shorted solenoid on the pump assembly. The pump assembly (usually mounted on the transom in the engine compartment) consists of a motor and two solenoids - one for port and one for starboard side. Unplug the pump and activate the switches on the dash - if the fuse does not blow, the problem is in the pump assembly. Verify the unit has a good ground, then with the unit unplugged apply 12V from the battery through a fused jumper to the individual pins. I believe that blue and yellow are for the motor blue is one direction and yellow is the reverse direction, red is the port solenoid and green is the starboard solenoid. If the fuse in the jumper blows when powering the individual component, that will identify the bad component. The solenoids are available separately so there is no need to replace the entire pump unit.
I hear the BOAT acronym all the time and it is usually from people who do not even own a boat. Like you said, you can't put a price on the good times and memories you make with a boat.
You guys should shrink-wrap the boat for the winter.
They could, but as Emily and Aaron both said, the local cats like to sleep on boat covers. That stretches the material and creates a pocket where rain water collects.
@@johnlloyd2390 I think they have a canvas cockpit cover. Which would sag with the cats. Shrink-wrap if applied properly will not.
@@scottsimpson657 I was thinking of custom hd "patio" type screen cover, just to keep the leaves/large debris out. Hit it with the leaf blower every couple weeks. Wrapped properly (which is expensive to do every year) or not, you're still going to have to do at least one major cleaning each season. And shrink wrap doesn't breath, on an older boat that breads mold and restricts your access to the interior, should you need to get in there from some reason.

Also, try an elastic band around the trigger on the drill to save you holding it .
Get a vacuum oil changer. They also work on your generator and lawn mower etc. clean.
Most boat horns have a metal diaphragm in them. They are notorious for getting rusty and freezing up. Plug-in another horn and see if it works.

Hi Guys just a tip, change oil and filter when you store for the winter. There is a acid building up in the oil with the carbon left in the oil. Puls the small moist that gets in there during the summer will make it rust a little bit. Just a small tip from Denmark.

Pro tip on the horn. The contacts tend to get just enough corrosion to make it spotty due to humidity. Buy one of those canned air horns like they use at sports arenas and toss in the glovebox just in case.
I got the little $5 hand pump from harbor frieght . Sucks out cold rotella 15w40 quick . And I always pump it into a 1 gallon jug so I know when it’s done
In Canada we run a winterizing antifreeze through all the freshwater plumbing in our boats and trailers to prevent burst lines. I know big snow storms almost never happen for you guys but it's cheap insurance.

Emily, there is a how to pour your oil instruction, to prevent spillage, molded on the back of every plastic oil bottle- you triggered my ocd's. 😉 As for viscosity? you guys know this- have an accurate OPG/OPS and proper CCV. Last thing you want is too much oil pressure on a heavy beesh like that, be blowing all the seals out. Oh and, Marine CRC (this is the best product ever) for winterizing your electronics, CRC contact cleaner for summerizing. Big box of all amp fuses on board, at all times. Sorry about the novel, love you guys!
I use one of those compressor style vacuum pumps to extract oil. It too took a long time. I realized that the dip stick tube on a marine engine (I have a VP 5.7 GSi) goes to the bottom of the oil pan. If the extraction hose does not go all the way into the pan air is sucked down between the extraction hose and the dip stick tube. If instead you select an extraction hose ID that fits over the dip stick tube and seals the rate of extraction should be much higher.
you guys should change the pan plug out to one with a pipe fitting and a pipe on. so you can pump it out of the pan with a bigger pipe, either with a drill or vacuum pump
I use to suck the oil out through the dip stick like you did until a boat racer called me a dip stick and showed me on his drag boat he installed a ball valve in the oil pan drain bung...the hose on the valve was then ran through the bilge port...it was about 10" past the port... simple, fast, clean!

Iv been a boat owner for about 3 seasons now. You hit the nail on the head when it comes to memories. Our 3 year old is in life with the water and we love giving him those experiences. Priceless. Someday I’d like to get a cabin cruiser like yours.

Yes, they are holes in the water in which we keep stuffing money...but there is nothing like skimming on top of the water, smelling the smells and hearing the sounds etc etc. Did I mention fishing, skiing, tubing, boarding, and just plain boating. I hope you have a blast on your vacation. Is it just me or is Emily holding the oil bottle upside down...no biggie...but I thought that was the purpose of the bottle design to cut down on the "glug glug" effect and give more control when pouring. “The memories totally outweighs the negatives of owning a boat”. We just spent 4 days and 3 nights on our 2855 cabin cruiser and used 75 gallons of gas. Hope you guys have a blast and deserve a getaway vacation.
Where i am gas - petrol and that’s £1.25 per litre or $ 8 us a gallon lol, So 600 bucks for a weekend. No wonder we prefer diesel boats here lol

You guy’s Need the mityvac 7201 manual fluid vacuum pump, it works awesome I am a GM tech, and I use mine almost every day. mityvac even has an air powered version but what I like about the 7201 if you don’t have access to an air compressor you can still use, and it has way more applications than just extracting oil, I have one for bleeding brakes, I have another for just extracting oil’s, coolants and so forth I also use the mityvac MV6410 for filling transmissions. Mityvac has a lot of grate products and they work really well!
I used drill pumps for a while and then bought a vacuum pump / canister. Never looked back. Way faster. Also lots of ways to do things but I always change the oil as part of the winterizing process so it doesn’t sit all winter with all the acids etc in it. Not sure if it matters. Ran straight 30W too. Internet was right on that one.
Gotta love the red Monaro! (That’s an Aussie Holden rebadged by Chevrolet - we actually supplied quite a few back to the U.S. about - oh! - 16 or so years ago). From one of your faithful followers here “down under” on the other side of the Pacific.
Make sure you service all your fluids. My new-to-me Sea Ray just had a cone clutch go out because the prior servicing had not been changing out those fluids enough and it wore it out.
Take the pump back and buy a cheap fuel pump. We use them at the shop to drain everything and way faster. In my cubby I threaded a pipe the same as the drain plug.screwed it in with a little sealer on the threads and have a hose clamped on pipe witch runs up on the side with a shoulder bolt in it and clamp so no leaks . Then when it's time to change oil you just loosen clamp pull bolt out of hose and plug my fuel pump into hose and pump it right out . Way easy and if you don't have a pump you can put hose out drain of boat and drain right into bucket . In my boat it's a little hard to reach drain plug so I was done fighting to reach it so had to come up with a way and this has worked for years .
Your right Em, I've had a couple boats and the wrenching Never ends unless you let a marina take care 🤑, but the memories are priceless ☮

I was just on a motorcycle ride last Saturday, returning to a little country loop that once was a customer's home. I was looking for a hand painted ancient barn billboard for Kendall motor oil. It proudly boasted that it was the 2000 mile oil! Sadly, it's now gone.
Have it shrink wrapped at the end of this summer, it'll be well worth it next year when you open it back up, they can put a zipper in it also so you can get in and out of it during the winter if necessary.
Hello flying Sparks garage I used to have a friend that had a boat down the shore every year I go down to the shore and ride on the boat that my friend had he passed away 5 years ago it makes me so sad I always love to go down the shore to hang out with him I used to have fun on his boat I liked it

If you go to Lake Ouachita, at some point, maybe you can plan a trip a bit further north to Greers Ferry Lake, also a great place for boating adventures & creating memories! And I'm sure you know, but Harbor Freight has a mechanical oil extractor that makes quick work of changing the oil, but it's a little pricey for only once-per-year use. I use a pump vacuum w/3qt tank, so I have to empty the tank when full & before the engine oil pan is completely drained, but it works.
AS banjo fitting on the sump plug with a tap and hose to poke out the water drain plug and a bucket out side of the boat.

We took our '92 Malibu Sunsetter out for the first time last Saturday (5/29/21) on the Napa River. My wife reupholstered most of the interior. It was hammered but looks so good now. Thanks for the Vlog. Enjoy your Sommer!

Get a couple of wood stays for under the cover. You can buy the mounting hardware and make wooden stays that arc your boat cover upward. the cat would have to be a mountain lion to put a sunken spot on it. Tree crap/gum is really hard to remove as you found out. Love the channel, but I'm missing the flying stuff????
Make sure to run the blower for a minute to clear the engine compartment of fuel fumes. Too many boats go up in flames because this precaution had been skipped.
Use the topsider oil extractor. I worked at a boat dealership and this is what they used. It’s great because it contains all the oil.
They make a hand oil pump that screws right onto the ring at the top of the dipstick tube. I just did mine, I have that same engine package, it got every last drop out. It took 8 quarts to refill my engine of 25-40w, not 5-30w. The tube is designed to have the oil extracted through it, I'm net even sure you would be able to drain the pan from the bottom.
Came upon your We Bought a Boat Video a couple weeks ago, I never really had any interest in owning one but watching your video made me curious what might be out there... within 3 days I found a 21 ft Cuddy cabin less than 5 mile from me , outdrive, blown engine (that has been removed), what appears to be a really clean replacement engine that I have to install, fish finder, stereo, tv and some extra parts. $1800 !!! Gel coat perfect not a tear on the interior just gonna update electrical a little before dropping in the motor. Wife says thanks a lot... Regal 2150 LSC
I had a boat years ago here in New Jersey. I covered it and put wooden poles inside with round discs on the end which had foam rubber on them . I cut them so they would keep the cover tight. So the next year there was very little cleaning. Of course we had to change the oil in the lower unit, and I had a 115 evinrude outboard which I kept in the garage. Good times.
I was just reading through the comments and I remembered that we tied a plastic cover over the boat also. We have leaves and snow so it was really necessary. After I took the boat out of the lake I would polish the sides and bottom. When I sold it the condition was like new. 18’ boat, lots of fun but hard to sell. One potential buyer said a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into. So I said I guess that’s a no sale then ? Lol. It was such fun - enjoy it together. I enjoy your channel.

Hey Emily you and Aaron should jump in the Cessna and fly over to The 2021 SWAMP STOL at Jennings Airport, 3R7, Louisiana June 10-12, 2021.
It would be a couple hour flight in the 172 Aaron could uses some cross-country hours in his log book. STOL Competitions are the new #1 motorsport destination trips to take.
Smart thing to do would be to put a cover over the whole boat
I get more destructive critter damage when the cover is on ... tend to keep it under boat house roof on the lift mostly

Hey Guys just thought I would share a oil filter removal tip, I have the same engine in my 2859. Punch a small hole in the top of the oil filter it will drain the oil back to the block a lot faster with less mess!
Being from the north I built my own frame made of wood . Use line tied off on the bow rail over the wood frame . Toss a tarp/ boat cover over the top and tie partially water filled milk jugs with water using pieces of line on the grommets of the tarp . Would last all winter long .
Or when we had the extra money 💰 I would just have a company come out and Shrink Wrap the boat . But I would never leave our boat uncovered to the harsh elements . Protect your investment . Boats aren’t cheap . I actually sold our boat after three years for more then we paid for it .

Oil filter trick is after your done removing all the oil. Take a nail and pop a small hole in the filter. The oil will drain into the motor. Remove filter...no mess.
You should get a curt trutrack weight distribution hitch from advanced auto parts. For a heavy boat like that or a trailer it really helps the stability I find.

25w40 is what a lot of dealers use on 4-stroke Mercury outboard motors but not sure about the inboard stuff like the 3.0, 4.3, 5.7, 7.4, etc. To be honest my owner's manual for my 75hp 4-stroke says to use 10w30 and seems to run better on it than the 25w40 the dealer insisted on using and doesn't "make oil" anymore either. 40 weight should be fine since that boat is just a Summer cruiser. Now I do know a mechanic that put 5w30 in the 3.0 on his dad's Bayliner and it wasn't happy at all. We picked up some 15w40 (I think) Mercury oil on the way to the lake for him to replace it with and it sounded way happier after that.

Nice to have your boat adventures back after winter. Terminology suggestion: "de-commission" in the fall, "re-commission" in the spring! Also, my trim tabs only worked when the ignition was turned on. Otherwise it's a pump issue or simply not enough fluid. Happy Birthday and Anniversary!

Conduit boat cover frame with a centerline high point water and light to medium weight branches will roll off and cats can’t create a low spot to nest.
Yeah it IS expensive to own and maintain a boat, but as you said, it is so much fun and you get so many hours of memories and joy. Happy birthday, anniversary AND not at least, sailing. 🚤😊
The Pela 6000 oil extractor is a great tool for your application. I have used one for years and they are excellent.

I bought an oil pump off of amazon this January. It's 12v, I used my NOCO booster pack to power it and only took about 5 minutes each to drain a Dodge Caravan and a 350 in my 95 Suburban. I agree you won't get it all, but I figure a 90% change is better than none.
Shrink wrap it in the fall…you guys are handy…east peasy clean boat in the spring!
Nice job👍 Pretty sure on Mercruisers the dipstick tube extends all the way to the bottom of the oil pan, so you should be able to just stick a hose on top of the dipstick tube and suck the oil out from the top. Once warmed up you could hook up a vacuum tank with clear hose to the dipstick tube, would save your hands, drill and batteries, kick back for a cuppa, when you hear it gurgling air and don't see any more oil coming up the hose...you're done👍🇦🇺
I couldn't care less about the old car mechanical stuff, antiques, etc. but I love this boat stuff. We had the same model and loved it. Keep the boat stuff coming!
i noticed the oil viscosity. I tend to use multigrade 15w40 or 20w50 for older engines.

On a boat like that you really want your trim tabs working so you can plane the boat out when your cruising or your going to burn lot's of fuel I had my trim tabs not working one year and it cost me a mint in fuel plus it takes longer to get where your going when the boat is pushing water instead of planing over the water
Next winter make a simple support out of wood or PVC to to keep your cover from sagging and create drainage.

My horn did the same thing and it was the actual horn itself. Mine was mounted on the side wall underneath the steering column! 30 bucks at Autozone/aftermarket horn!

Cats are repelled by moth balls, you could put some in a couple old socks and hang the under your swim platform so you can have the cover on. One year my dad put moth balls on his motorcycle over winter to repel mice, come to find out they don't bother mice, but kept their cats away so the mice were safe. He ended up having to replace a small wiring harness. I don't think a mouse could get in your boat as long as you don't leave a rope (line) hanging down for it to climb, so that shouldn't be an issue.

hi guys love the ch. When you next use your pump pull the dipstick and release the oil filler cap. That way you'll allow air to replace the oil in the system much easier. Allow for better flow from the pump. keeping the cap, dipstick and filter in place keeps the system closed creating an airlock for want of a better term.
Hi Emily and Aaron, an air powered fluid evacuator works much faster than that centrifugal drill pump. Inexpensive ones are on Amazon and at Harbor Freight, thank you for all the great content! Much love!

Do they not fit non-return valves inside these filters? If so I would guess the hole would not help a lot. My tip is to drain the oil and run the engine for a couple of minutes. That empties the filter. You might think it will damage the engine, but the reality is that the bearings still have sufficient coating of oil. I have a 30 year old Mercedes car that I have owned for 16 years. I have done that at least once a year. Always use a good brand fully synthetic oil. I've done well over 100,000 miles in that time. Still in great condition.
We have to do a slightly better "winterize" procedure. We wrap the top of the boat with SHRINK WRAP...and that keeps the critters...esp cats...OFF the stored boats.
You should cross the chains when attaching to the truck. It provides a cradle if the trailer pops off the ball
Talking about memories on a boat. My cousin when his kids were about 10ish said to his father that he needed a boat to be like Uncle Dave (my dad)( about 10 years passed away by this time). My cousin and his parent camped every year for most of his childhood including teaching his fiancé (now wife/mother of his children to water ski). These memories were important to him and when his father told my mother/ his sister this story she cried.
G'DAY Emily and Aaron, another fantastic VLOG thankyou, great work summerizing your boat,from what I could see, the oil evacuation device looked like a small gear pump,which doesn't self prime easily,my advice would be to fashion a cork/ plug for end of hoses,then after use,plug or hung each end,while still full of oil,then store with system already full of oil,then before use,remove sump cork, before insertion,then drain end prior to starting drill ,raise up green hose higher than pump,then gearpump should be primed,SAFE BOATING,also it is better to have trim tabs working,as better able to trim vessel,port & starboard,as well as how up/ down to achieve maximum comfort and fuel efficiency,as always, Kindest Regards, Dave McLaughlin Queensland Australia

Winterizing our boats consists of adding long sleeve shirts to the storage lockers for those 2 cold days each year!!!
Next time you change the oil if you take a Philip screwdriver and poke a hole in the top of the oil filter it will drain so you don't make a mess when you remove it.

Have you guys tried using a heavy tarp over the boat and strapping it down to keep it tensioned. Even if cats get on top, it shouldn't sag or create those water pockets. Either that or try using one of those "portable car tent/garage" canopies. Just make sure it's tall enough to clear that ocean liner haha.
