im not here to debate his legacy, and I have no ties to penn state, but I remember watching this intro/montage when it aired live got choked up and got major goosebumps. it still is one of the greatest intros I've ever seen.... the song choice, the clips, and Musburgers words/voice. thumbs up all around
I'm an Alabama grad-but Joe Pa is a true living legend. What an amazing man. Not just a coach, or teacher, everything. Incredible. Every Penn State grad should be proud of Joe Paterno and the program he has created.
Damn, what a shame we fucked up our chance of a national title. But hey, we're going to the Rose Bowl!!! We won the Big Ten!!! Joe Paterno -- a man of honesty and integrity. A true champion, a TRUE winner!
@rjplamf61 it was in one of the papers we get here on campus: the usa today, the new york times, the centre daily times, or the daily collegian. i can't remember which one but it said how joe paterno was the ONLY person that admitted his lack of action and the victims and families greatly respected him for that and that his passing should be observed with respect.
This is the most winning college football coach in the history of the game. And an even better human being. Thank you Coach Paterno for everything you've done for me. And thank you coach for always standing up for the right thing in the face of discrimination, ridicule, and the disgusting cowards who still try to pin someone else's misdoings on you. Rest in peace coach. You are one of the greatest men this world has ever known right up there with MLK.
The world is better because of the changes Joe Paterno brought to education, athletics, literacy, and philanthropy. By the way-I'm a Wisconsin fan. I just recognize heroism when I see it.
Thanks for being a real sports fan and not ranting lunatic who throws all facts to the side to promote a self serving agenda. The world needs more sports fans like you. When I was at the bigten championship game I was so impressed with how nice the Wisconsin fans were after the game I told every Wisconsin fan I saw to hold their head high because they played one hell of a game. and I wasn't just saying that to be nice. You guys played tough. No shame in that.
It's hard to believe today has been 2 years since you passed. You had a major impact on my life and many others. You made PSU what it is today. You did more than coach football. You were a great man. No matter what anyone says you are the best NCAA coach. You are COMPLETELY INNOCENT in the whole scandal. No matter what 409 will also be etched in my heart as well as this date. We are because of Joe Pa. Rest easy Joe and thank you so much. Your legacy will never be forgotten! We Are...
JoePa, you brought my father and I together. I thank you for the years you dedicated to Penn State. People will slander your legacy and I'm sorry for that...but I know you did your best for that University. WE ARE PENN STATE!
Shame on you PSU for not standing up for Joepa someone that dedicated his whole life to the University I guess it's easy to place blame on someone that's not even here to defend himself Ya know what if he's the monster everyone says he is go ahead and give the Paterno family back the millions of dollars they donated to you. No one will ever make me believe that Joepa knew about this and did nothing
If you don't like Joe Paterno why bother watching this. If you remember Joe Paterno and his family-there's a reason you're here. So much nastiness written over nothing any of you know. Maybe those who don't like this could find one that makes them happy.
Hollis Gaskill so much respect that you could look for the truth and not the popular belief that joe pa is a bad person, especially since you’re a buckeye fan
Christmas 1986. We were visiting my grandparents in Lancaster PA. My grandpa asked me if I wanted to go to the Harrisburg Airport for a rally for the Penn State football team. That was the year they won their 2nd national title. I said yes and remember shaking hands with the likes of Joe Pa, Shane Conlan, DJ Dozier, John Shaffer and Harry Hamilton. Going to that rally was the most awesome experience of my teenage life. RIP Joe Pa. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you for everything, Coach! You will live on in the thousands of lives that you have touched throughout your life. This is the true statement of a man. RIP Joseph Vincent Paterno
No matter who you are a fan of, this man is a legend. I will never forget being in the student section and seeing him "jog" on to the field for the first time with the Blue Band playing. You knew you were in the presence of a legend.
We miss you, Coach! God bless, and thanks for all your contributions to Penn State: academics, loyalty, pride in our university, and oh yeah, winning a few football games along the way.
I'm 31, was born and raised a PSU fan, I was probably in mom's stomach when I went to my first PSU game. To me, Joe Pa is College Football. His story is the stuff legends are made of. I can't help but be thankful that I've had the privalege to see this man in action. Something I will be able to tell my grandchildren. "I got to see this man in action" and how I will never forget the memories he's brought me and all the wonderful PSU fans.
Three things wrong with your statements: 1. Joe Paterno did not set or enforce policy on who can use the school athletic facilities. 2. All sources indicate that Paterno rarely, if ever, saw or interacted with Sandusky after the 2001 incident. 3. Again, Paterno did not know specifics of the allegation or if Sandusky was actually guilty of it. He passed the witness on to the appropriate school officials and he assumed an appropriate investigation would follow.
Joe made sure the witness gave his account to the proper individuals, not knowing specific details or whether or not Sandusky was actually guilty. The 1998 incident is actually the REASON Curley decided not to report Sandusky to the DPW in 2001. Why? Because in 1998 Sandusky was fully investigated and admitted to hugging kids in the shower. He wasn't arrested because, while inappropriate, hugging kids in the shower is not a crime. He expressed remorse and said he wouldn't do it anymore.....
The picture that shows Joe in the press box looking at the students at 1:45 really shows the true side of Joe Paterno. Hes a great man and lives to help students and young people at Penn State. He cares about the students and they are very important ti him. He has given his life to supporting education and has donated millions of dollars. He built the library at PSU and has helped the school become one of the leading academic schools in the country, His legacy is far more than football.
I am 20 years old. I have had season tickets to the Iowa Hawkeyes for 17 of those years. I live for college football. Most of all, Iowa football. I know Joe Pa won't read this but many PSU fans will. You guys have a great coach. He is the face of college football. Don't take him for granted. He is a great coach and a better guy. We all here in hawkeye nation look up and respect Joe.
Those of you who choose to try to dirty Joe's name, will fail. He has a legacy, and those who he coached and those who met him were inspired. Joe was loved by all he met, including people who never met him, he is an amazing man who touched thousands of people.
I will cry like a school girl when they say we have lost Joe Paterno. He will always be a hero to me. I'm a University of Georgia student and a Bulldog fan till the day I die, but I love Joe Paterno so much and am so thankful for him that tonight I consider myself a Nittany Lion. WE ARE PENN STATE. God Bless you Joe pa.
Thank you for your words regarding Joe Pa. It's people like you, fans and alumni from other universities, that validate what Joe meant, not just to Penn State, but to the game of college football. It wasn't just about football. Congrats on your National Championship, well deserved.
WE will always LOVE YOU Coach Paterno, none of these comments even matter, we know better than to respond, because WE know who you ARE. Thank you for sharing your life with us. We are so fortunate to have had you as our coach. May you FOREVER rest in Peace, God bless you, WE ARE going to miss YOU!
When the final whistle blew on this game, I turned to my son and said, "There was the greatest example of success, whether on the Penn State football field or in life: no interceptions, no fumbles, no penalties." That's what Joe taught us and stood for. Never forget that!
Look, I agree that all suspected child abuse should be reported to the police. But we have to examine the details to determine exactly why the police were not notified in this case. Curley probably believed Sandusky had already been investigated for the same behavior in 1998, and that it was not a crime, but that Sandusky needed professional help. That is quite different than an intentional coverup.
Fast forward to 2001...McQueary gives his account to Curley and Schultz. Although McQueary believes something more serious occurred, pay close attention to what he actually saw. He essentially saw Sandusky hugging a child in the shower. He did not see thrusting, sexual contact, nor did the boy seem to be in distress. Curley (and Schultz) likely thought "we've seen this behavior before." Curley knew Sandusky had already admitted to this behavior, that is why he suggested "professional help."
In the entire 267 page Freeh report, the only so-called "evidence" that Joe Paterno participated in a coverup is one vague email from Tim that suggests Joe may have persuaded Tim to speak with Sandusky before reporting him to the DPW. Except that the same Freeh report shows that Schultz and Curley discussed having Curley talk to Sandusky first BEFORE Curley's conversation with Paterno. In other words, the Freeh report itself contradicts the assumption made by Freeh.
Joe has admitted that he didn't realize the severity of the situation, and that, "with the benefit of hindsight" he should have done more. Based on one allegation, he was not certain of Sandusky's guilt, and that is why he did not press the matter. And the fact is, if the only evidence that the jury heard was McQueary's testimony, Sandusky would still be free today. Joe didn't have the benefit of knowing 50 other allegations to convince him of Sandusky's guilt.
Everyone of you posters can have your opinions, this is a free country. But when you have sports icons and living legends come on national television to show there respect and talk about what a great man Joe Paterno was, you better criticize every one of them for supporting JoePa and having nothing but amazing things to say about the man. How he changed there lives and lived. Long Live Joe Paterno, your Penn St. family will always love you!!!
@ktherock7 He didn't look the other direction, he told his uppers, that's all he needed to do. It's not his fault that they didn't contact the police and he didn't even know the severity of what happened. How was he suppossed to know? I highly doubt he would cover something like that up, you would have to be without a soul. Everyone is overlooking all that he has done and making him into some melicious criminal. Its just not right.
I cannot belive all the people that are bringing shame to Joe Paterno, he is one of the greatest men to ever live and has done so much for The Pennsylvania State University. Why would a man who cares so much about his University do anything to disgrace it. I stood on a stage at 8 years old crying for the loss of my grandfather, only to look out and see Joe was there, I know first hand from the friendship they had how wonderful of a man he is, and he doesnt deserve any of this.
Tides will turn Joe. Hang out for a bit. You will be vindicated and you will be recognized not only as the greatest college football coach of all time, but as a man to mentored so many young men into adulthood. The actions of one does not destroy the acts of the many.
im a michigan fan but i want to dislike this man...but i can't what hes done for that program is astounding. if hes not the best college coach ever than he has to be at least in the top 3 great job by ABC/ESPN for this montage it gives me chills everytime I watch it
For all the truly decent people and paterno fans reading this, don't waste your time with all of the no lifes who are writing unnecessarily evil things about joe pa because joe pa on a bad day was better than all of them combined r.i.p. joe
The media screwed joe paterno and his legacy. He did nothing wrong, and everything right in his life. Sara Ganim won a Pulitzer prize for wronging the greatest college football coach ever. God bless Joe Paterno.
As A Iowa Fan, I must say if we had to lose 1 game a year it would be a honor to lose to Joe Pa. Alot of hawk fans cheer for Penn st when not playing Iowa my second favorite team.. GO HAWKS AND STATE
Trolls gtfo. Joe Paterno is the best coach, the classiest man, and made everyone believe in this school. Im so grateful to be able to say ive been a fan through his run
IMHO he will be known as the greatest coach who has the done the most for any institution or franchise in the history of all of sports. ... and I'm a Michigan Fan
does anyone have the version of this montage that they played on college gameday? if so could you please let me know where I can find it! I would appreciate it. hook em!
I love the Buckeyes, but this video was a great pre-game, probably the best I've ever seen, that is all there is to it. Why are we even talking about 8-4 Iowa.
joe pa LOL! The Freeh report was universally discredited for being factually incorrect full of blatant conjecture. Sandusky prosecutors Frank Fina and Jim McGettigan told Armen Ketiyan on Showtime Sports that they found no evidence Paterno was part of a cover up because Paterno followed the PSU handbook by the letter.
The games were played NCAA can say they took those wins away but they were played, i was at the game Joe Won his 400th win, you cant take that away from me and Penn State.
Love ya Joe Pa... great program you have. I will always enjoy you and Penn State winning as long as its behind the Hawkeyes! Finish the season strong. Go Hawks!
@Michael Spinosa -- Let me correct myself. I gave the wrong name of the PA AG that officers told the 1998 incident to, which had been told to them by Paterno who was relaying what McQueary had told him. McQueary told him he had seen nothing, but had heard a boy & what he thought sounded like a possible towel slap. Anyway, I said the AG was Corbet which isn't correct. Corbet is PA's Governor. Corbet at some point did know, but wasn't AG. Not sure why I called him AG! Thanx for letting me correct
I got a fact wrong & as I never want to post something that isn't entirely correct, I want to correct it. The PA Attorney Gen who appointed the Cente Co DA was'nt Corbet. Tom Corbet is PA's Governor, who knew, at some point, abt the allegations of possible molestation (not rape, altho being molested IS atrocious, and we in State College are just sick that these kids were molested). Btw, the PA AG knew the locker room noise was reported or he wouldn't have had the DA see if he could make a case.
@azforlifetime COMMENT 2: Paterno told his higher ups & the police McQueary told him he had seen NOTHING, but heard an undidentifiable noise that may have been a towel slap. Rape was NEVER mentioned. Police did report it to the PA Attorney Gen. He appointed a District Attorney to investigate. Gricar decided the case shouldn't be brought to trial after a long investigation. Why would you accuse Paterno of "doing nothing about it" if he thought there was no wrongdoing? He was listening to the DA.
Wow Comical. I'm disappointed. And I actually thought there was somebody on this page that I could have an intellectual debate with. I actually thought you may have had an intelligent bone in your body. Hell, I thought you would at least be able to depict the difference between vocabulary and grammar. I've lost all respect for you. I'm done responding. You have greatly disappointed me.
I'm not writing a fucking term paper here kid. The level of my vocabulary is a non-factor. This is simply how I speak. If you think that any of the words I jotted above are an attempt to "sound smart," then you may need to be re-evaluated. And good lord, classmates and peers are not the same thing at all. Where in the hell did you get that? But you did use the term "redundancy correctly." I'm impressed.
I'm sure you do, all ivy league students brag about going into an ivy league school and making money, so what ivy league school do you attend? Also my one parent is a doctor and one is a chemical engineer, together they make over 300,000 dollars a year, don't need much more money than that i have a big house, pool, trampoline, video games, and play sports, all i need. And i'll most likely get a partial scholarship for basketball and my grades so you can stop trying to brag about how cool you are
lol i love how all the people who dont like joe pa are always like way worse of a person then him, making fun of cancer, making fun of people who have died, making jokes about child rape, and caring about PSU football (whether they should be punished or not) more then the children who were abused ((making you people no better then PSU was about it))....compared to you people joe pa was a saint, nuff said
He did wrong but you can't hate him, think of it this way, if the first Sandusky victim told the someone like the cops about what happened to him, Sandusky would have been tried and proven guilty and jailed, saving the other 51 accounts of rape. So now is it right to say that that kid should go to jail too? Of course not, but if the person who has the greatest reason to turn Sandusky in didn't do it until 15 years later how do you expect someone else to do it when they didn't even witness it?
So, despite that fact that stories of a coverup make for great news ratings, the bottom line is Curley placed too much trust in Sandusky, and that is the ultimate reason why Sandusky was never reported. While Paterno was in a position where he could have questioned Curley's judgement, Joe is not even close to the villain many of you have made him out to be. But don't take my word for it - please read the evidence in the Freeh Report and decide for yourself.
Read the Freeh report. Contrary to what you've heard it does not contain damning evidence against Joe Paterno. Far from it. It does however provide great insight on how the whole mess went down. Essentially Curley, Schultz, and Spanier agreed on a plan (which may or may not have been supported by Paterno) to have Curley confront Sandusky. Based on Curley's meeting with Sandusky, he was to determine whether it was necessary to report him to the Department of Public Welfare.
In any case, none of this is evidence of coverup. In fact, it makes some sense that school administrators would speak to Sandusky to hear his explanation of what happened in those showers. Unfortunately, Curley apparently believed Sandusky's explanation of McQueary's report and as a result, Curley and Schultz passed on the "horsing around" story to Spanier and the Second mile. While stories of a "coverup" make great ratings, the fact is that Sandusky smooth talked his way out of this one.
Coach, whether you're in Heaven talking football with the Bear or with us still, know that whatever happens, you will be vindicated. Maybe you'll see it in the fall. Or maybe you'll be looking up from Heaven down onto Beaver Stadium when it happens - when the fools like the posters below me wake up and realize all the great things you did for Penn State - no, for acadmics in this country, period.
I spent the better part of my life going to PSU games, watching him on the sidelines. How do you think they'll do this year? was the question that didn't need reference when my grandfather asked it. It was in reference to PSU and JoePa's team. He's gone now, no longer the coach. But to me, and many like me, he'll always be the coach. And it seems he's not going to be around much longer to see those who'd wish to see his name run through the mud succeed. Thank god for that. He's a great man.
@odinatorx1 That really upsets me. Do you have any idea what he actually did? This man is much much more than football. He donated millions to the university (library). He put the student in the student-athletes, and changed the lives of many people. He reported the event to the head of police and his superiors (and he didn't even know that much about what happened), HE STILL REPORTED IT. It is the fault of the administration to not continue with what happened in this situation.
Joe, I always respected you. I'm not even a PSU fan, but you were a role model to me in a sort of way, but this entire scandal made me lose respect for you in a lot of ways. But, everyone makes mistakes. But, this one will be a hard one for me to swallow, and for the nation. I really do hope you wish you did more, I dont think your a bad human being, and we all know your an excellent coach.
It's quite apparent that the vast majority do not know the role Joe played in this scandal. He did his job, he reported the incident, and followed up and was told that the situation was being taken care of. He doesn't support child abuse and neither do I, but he's suffering for the mistakes of another man. The purpose for the video is show collective admiration for the man, and you fuckers are putting blame on him for the mistakes of others. God bless you JoePa, God bless PSU
When JoePa's career comes to an end. He will be remembered as the greatest coaches not only college football, but in the history of the sport. Paterno is a throwback to a bygone era. His desire to instill values in his players and make them better athletes, and better men is something not seen today. A man who turns down partial ownership in the NFL to stay at the college level and make a legendary legacy is something we'll never see again. God bless Joe Paterno.
im not here to debate his legacy, and I have no ties to penn state, but I remember watching this intro/montage when it aired live got choked up and got major goosebumps. it still is one of the greatest intros I've ever seen....

As a Buckeye, I'd say it captures Joe Pa's positive impact at PSU and on college football. Hats off!
best pregame tease of all time! rest in peace, JoePa.

Always the #1 coach in my heart. There will never be another.
Rest easy JOE ! More than a coach, but a father figure of an entire university. We will dearly miss you.
Agreed. Everyone, even here in U-M/MSU country, loved Joe Pa.

The actions of one does not destroy the acts of the many.
im a michigan fan but i want to dislike this man...but i can't
what hes done for that program is astounding. if hes not the best college coach ever than he has to be at least in the top 3
great job by ABC/ESPN for this montage
it gives me chills everytime I watch it
For all the truly decent people and paterno fans reading this, don't waste your time with all of the no lifes who are writing unnecessarily evil things about joe pa because joe pa on a bad day was better than all of them combined r.i.p.
GO HAWKS AND STATE
Thanks for keeping this up. I know it causes a lot of mixed emotions
Im a michigan fan , but i'll even give Penn state there props, I hope they win it all, Joe Pa , have to love him, lol What a legend.
I'm a Hokie fan and don't care much for the Big Ten. Except for Penn State. Coach Paterno is amazing.
One of the greatest pieces ever made!!!!!!!!!! If you are a college football fan, it does not get any better....
I agree. no one is a better analyst than musberger. pro or college. he's the best.
I can't stand Penn State fans, but I love Joe Pa and I'll be sad to see him go.
you better learn paterno's name because he'll still be alive when you die
A Gator here giving respect where respect is due. True class.
The old man didn't die from cancer, but from a broken heart.
I just love this video. Go Buckeyes! , but we love you Joe.
i dont care what anyone says. joe pa is an inspiration
JVP 409
joe pa JVP praised by PA AG in 2011 for how he handled the situation. JVP's Grand Jury testimony put Sandusky behind bars.
Joepa... You're the soul of Penn State.
We Miss You Joepa
Love ya Joe Pa... great program you have. I will always enjoy you and Penn State winning as long as its behind the Hawkeyes! Finish the season strong. Go Hawks!
God i miss him
From my college.. PSU.. Thank you for the competition and the years of great future competition.. cheers to a great rival!
409 forever
Mark Havira it is 409 again the ncaa restored his wins in Jan 2015
