How to fit a Tail Tidy to a 2019 Triumph Speed Twin

- The new Triumph Speed Twin is a handsome bike as it comes from the factory, but, having now lived with it for a few weeks, I've decided the long plastic tail end has to go! In this video I attempt to fit a new tail tidy from the nice folks at TEC bike parts.....now I don't have a great track record doing this sort of caper, will this one prove more straightforward than the R&G one I recently fitted to my Honda CRF? Stay tuned to find out...

We have now made the hole larger as on some brackets the powder coat was building up in the hole.
I am in the U.S. and would like to purchase this tidy but TEC’s U.S. distributor does not appear to carry it.
What, so nobody tested the final product? Will you be recalling/replacing the ones you've already sold? Still selling the old ones?
@@mrcintheuk4641 Hi
we stand by all our products and if anybody has one with the powder coat build up in the hole we will happily replace it
@@noonrock4 they will ship parts to the USA if the distributor here doesn't carry it. Matt Millburn was super helpful and I had it in a week.
@Mark Wasden....they are available in the US now. Just got mine yesterday.
I just installed last night on my 2022 Speed Twin. Bought it after seeing your flog. Thanks!
My pleasure!
Thank you for uploading this video. I just installed this kit on my 2022 Speed Twin. The instructions that come with the kit are OK, but it was a big help watching the video a couple of times before doing the install.
Nice tail now and an excellent job editing the video. Have a great day!
Many thanks for posting this clip, i`ve got a TEC tail tidy to fit, and this vid has made things so much more understandable.
Thank TMF. Another great video. Your Speed Twin vids helped me seal the deal on a new one in red a couple of weeks ago 🙂. Can confirm that fitting the Tec Bike Parts tail tidy is exactly the same for the 2021/22 Speed Twin.
Congratulations on the new bike, good aren’t they!
Nicely done TMF. Looked fairly straight forward and makes a big improvement. Good to see the best of British, Triumph-TMF-Tec bike parts, top stuff!
Is the plate 7x5?
It is indeed Col...
Thanks a lot for your video. Received my new Speed Twin a few days ago. Bought also a short tail kit from another producer, but the assembly is the same. So your video helped me a lot.
Glad to help!
To me, that turn out 100% better than stock. A lot of times it’s the little things that make a huge difference. 👍🏼 😎
I don't have a speed twin but Missenden Flyer so of course watched the whole thing!
I have been using the GoPro 3m double sided pads to stick my plates on for the last 18 month. They are pretty solid too. The law is a 11mm margin from the letter to the edge, you have loads of room at the sides to cut them down further.
Thanks for the DIY. Going to order this one now. I like what I'm seeing from TEC so far. Been stalking their steering damper for the Speed Twin too.
Do you find the Speed Twin needs one??
@@TheMissendenFlyer Can't say I'm convinced it does right now. Just a sport bike habit of mine.
Finally went in to see one of these in person, after your reveal. 1. The Street Twin isn't just smaller, but they replaced about every neat design element from the Speed Twin with cheap plastic turn signals and finish materials. :( 2. Wow, the Speed Twin has a whole new level of finish quality and looks amazing in person.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, when I was younger, and more skint.
I laid out in sequence all the bits of a Ford Sierra cylinder head, values, followers, nuts, bolts in position. So they all went back in exactly the same hole . It's good to get it in the correct hole.
These days I just have a PCP deal on a newish car, life's too short ! (more time to ride the bike)
Definitely looks better than the original and must admit I do enjoy your how to videos Cheers Chips.
Looks sooo much better
I'd have perhaps added a touch of black Hammerite on the filing just to stop any rust. Excellent video as always..👍
love the speed twin such a good looking bike ...
Well done, Andy. Hope your right wing is on the mend. 🏍👍🏍
I never knew I wanted a Speed Twin until watching these videos.
I’m really chuffed with mine - lovely bike...
Did Tail tidy, cat bypass, k&N air filter, and Corbin gunfighter custom seat. Awesome bike! Surprising power difference with cat bypass...
Nice video, I've just changed the plate holder on my Speed Twin yesterday but I choosed the FreeSpirits option for two main reasons, I'm from Portugal, and the FreeSpirits model as options for many countrys plate screws configurations, and the other reason, witch I can see by your video that I was wrong, was the plate light use, The photos I saw didn't look like had that option. Overall both options are pretty much the same. The one issue I had was that I had to find a way to add the rear reflector, that's mandatory here in Portugal. The licence plate material is reflective so I don't understand the need for an extra reflector in the back, but well, it's the law here. The holder also has 2 screw holes in the middle where we can fit the reflector, but I had to ad a rubber spacer between the plate and the holder so that the screws head that would hold the reflector could have space.
Cheers
Edit: yep, I've checked TEC product page and in the photos there is no plate light installed, they should update those photos. That's one of the things that made me look for other options.
Thank you Sir for this video, it will certainly help me to install TEC Tidy Tidy (recently bought) on my ST which exactly similar as yours
Glad it helped
Great job, much neater. I do love that bike .
Likening the tail tide makes the bike look cleaner nice job
Nice little addition to the new motorcycle TMF.. presumably a radiator guard and a pair of bobbins are next on the list...
Hi TMF, greetings from sunny Thailand. Nice job, beautiful bike to start with, now she looks even better. Enjoy!
Thanks Robert....
that looks so much better. Well done
Thank you...
It is a very pretty bike & the tail tidy while subtle, does make a nice difference. I'd definitely balls up fitting it somehow though, I just have the knack lol.
Agreed about TEC, I bought their full exhaust system for XSR700. Looks & sounds like a twin should. And all for a very reasonable price. 👍
Yes a great bunch of guys to do business with, from what I've seen good products and great prices - I fully recommend them (and no, I'm not on commission!)...
What a neat solution. Nice video, TMF 👍
Thank you Keith!
Looks much nicer....apologies for sniggering when you said your tool wasn't long enough!! Cheers, Steve
Looks really good.
Beautiful bike. You always get the ones I like. It must be said, you’ve got great taste.
Thank you!
Congratulations .. Memories of Blue Peter came flooding back watching this .. I must admit though the highlight was the under seat clean shot :)
Yes I enjoyed that I must say....
tidies that back end up nicely! good work 👍🏻
Yes I agree - thanks for watching!
It definitely looks better with the tail tidy. Sharp bike.
That looks a lot better!
You're better than you think at wrenching, Flyer! I love your thumbnail, looks like you're getting stung by a bee. Cheers from Pittsburgh!
No he's not - otherwise he would've taken the time to coat the filed hole.
I'm not normally a fan of aftermarket bits normally they are weak but it seems the guys at tec have a pride in making good sturdy stuff seen lots of their bits on another popular channel and am impressed ..this one also improves the look without compromising the wiring good show !! Now I just need to contact tec for my commission 👍🏻😁..no seriously I'm impressed which is a rare occurrence for me ...peace and Love brother 👍🏻☮❤
Yes great guys to do business with and their stuff seems top notch...I don't hesitate to recommend them based on what I've seen so far.
@@TheMissendenFlyer
Thanks for taking time to feed back it must be full on your end and also as an aside I'm very slowly getting dragged into modern biking with my 1150rt (Yes I know it's ancient) with its fandango abs fuel injection strange suspension and electronic screen just goes to show sometimes we have to change..bless you peace and love ride safe and thanks again 👍🏻☮❤
I've just ordered the fuel booster plug, as well as levers and the bash guard for my speed twin. The fuel booster should make for a bit smoother operation in the low rev range. Cheers!
Yes I have the booster plug fitted on mine....
Now it looks perfect 👌
Thank you - I think it's pretty close...
Excellent vid and a very good mod. It looks much better than the original. With the ability to ‘file’ at that speed there’s no wonder MrsF goes round with a smile on her face! 😉😉. On another note, If you want to lose shed-loads of weight with the minimum effort and minimum ‘cost-per-kilo’, change your battery to a Lithium based one!
...actually it already has a lightweight battery fitted....and Mrs Flyer always has a smile on her face ;0)
Certainly looks better, but Triumph did a stellar job here by including a fender . A certain miss on the R9T.
The screws with 'star' heads are torx, had to buy a set of torx bits for my Duke when I changed a few bits. Well worth having as they are popping up everywhere these days!
That’s the one!
Thing is why the beep beep do manufacturers mixed bolt and screw head types grrrrrr..😬
carol mc yes totally agree! It's a royal pain, especially when a simple job turns into a bl**dy nightmare cos of one weird fastener!
Did the one on the back of my Ducati 1100 Scrambler, same deal looked OK as was but decided to make it better. Mine was Evo Tech, good bit of kit and lighter. Took me about two hours though as whole back end of the bike had to come off lol. 😮
Yes they're seldom as straightforward as you think (my CRF tail tidy comes to mind - this one was better)....
Just a tip you need a reflector (Legal requirement) you can fit the original up to the bottom of the plate. Enjoyed the video thanks
Terry
I've added a Dart fly screen, which makes a big difference at motorway speeds, wasn't sure whether to fit it or not as I really liked the original look, but it's grown on me and it does make longer journeys more comfy
Maybe you could do a review?
Good tutorial TMF
Looks great. You could just spray paint the hole after you had to file it (which does happen often as you note with aftermarket parts). Just corrosion protection, no one will ever see it or notice.
Good point....
Wow that's good for you Tmf .very good video thanks from Danny
Seen tecs Royal Enfield scrambler project. Take note RE.! The next Himalayan ?
Test riding this bike hopefully this weekend:)
I coudn't think why I watched this video I don't even have a Triumph Speed Twin ( I do have a Triumph though) but as Graham Tuscon remarked below the way of presenting as you take apart and reassemble is (was?) reminiscent of Blue Peter (UK) or even dare I say James May's The Reassembler programme. Well done to you!
Much better TMF! Such a lovely bike... This bike is tempting me more and more!
TBH!
Good to hear from you sir!
@@TheMissendenFlyer You too! I've been rather busy with the family and work of late... I'm either buying a Speedmaster, T120 or Speed Twin next... So far, a chopped down T120 is winning in my mind... Will see!
Keep the videos coming sir! Fun and informative as always!
@@CaptainRambunctious You know the ST makes sense!!!
Just a quick t if you don't have a torx driver in the future, you could use a small flat blade screwdriver too. 👍 Looks nice though. I'd love a speed twin.
Love the thumbnail 😂
I don't usually like taking things too far from standard (boring i know) but i must admit, that does improve what is an already great looking bike!
Agreed!
Good job TMF, nice to see you back in the garage!
NB. You'll need a red reflector on the back to be 100% legal, just saying!
I did wonder about that....
Looks cool.
Looks like they forgot to account for the powder coating thickness when they selected the hole size. Seems pretty good value at 55 quid. Great vid as always 😎
Cheers Bobby!
All I want is a luggage rack!
(it does look better with a tail tidy)
Hope the elbow gets better.
Thanks (so do I !)
Nice job Sir. Thanks again...........Sal : )
It's much improved, however due to my condition I would have had to touch up the filed hole with black paint.
Good choice going for the aluminum tail tidy 👍 once the gravel and road grit eats the finish off the underside you won’t have to be fighting the rust problem that comes with a steel one 😉.
Sorry to hear about the tennis elbow. I suffered from that a few years back caused by running a hammer drill one handed. (Yes, if you’re going to dumb, you have to be tough.) Dr told me if I took care of it and did the PT it would be better in 18 months, or I could have surgery followed by months of painful PT and it would be all better in 18 months.....😳. I decided to just be extra careful and pass on the surgery 😜.
Great - only 12 months to go then!
I just bought a Speed Twin and notice that, here in the States, we get a different tail light assembly and headlight rim. The Euro versions are much nicer.
Excuse the pun but much better and very Tidy! certainly improves the look
Damn, I was perfectly happy with the rear end but now I’ll have to by one - looks good. Buy some torx keys!
A vast improvement! Good old TEC. I notice some headlight brackets on the bench for the Enfield maybe? 👍🏻
...Ooh you don't miss much do you! ...and correct.
Star shape ! Torx drive fella,
Looks much better. You might want to invest in a set of torx screwdrivers. The magnetic holder for the bits is often too wide to get on to recessed fastenings.
Yeah, I could do with some decent tools full stop mate....good to hear from you as ever....
Bike looking great TMF 👍. Can't wait to see the Royal Enfield soon too. I have been watching the TEC bike parts channel along with Stuart Fillinghams channel and they have some great RE 650 content . I'm very tempted to buy one 🤔
Yes I have some plans with the Royal Enfield too - stay tuned for more bolt on action soon!
Looks much better but very labour intensive for such a 'simple' alteration. How many bolts did they need to secure that bit of plastic??
The "star shaped things are called torxWorth going to your local hardware outlet & get a set. Allen key will bugger the heads as not a good fit. The tail tidy is a huge improvement on the original.
Torx are useful for removing buggered hex/Allen head bolts too.
My theory for the elbow brace is it's for repetitive strain injury caused by necking the bottles and cans of beer stacked on the bench ;-).
I wish! ...buggerred it up picking up a pair of ski's - that was 6 months ago...
Looking even better from the rear quarter, lol.
Just Fitted my tail tidy thanks to this video, nice one cheers. See when you fitted the light to the tail tidy did you use the little washer sin the packet or buy/have new ones that don't require the washers? Worried about these rusting
Nice mate 👍
The Speed Twin is sure a good looker...You were right, that tail tidy was just what it needed to clean up the look "just enough".
Yeah it looks cool doesn't it....wondering if straight bars might be a good look???
@@TheMissendenFlyer ...flat bars might make a nice balanace with the new tail tidy.
Top job looks much more compact & tidy, you'll have Triumph ringing you to work in their engineering shop ay, those "star "shaped bolts that were troublesome are called Torx fasteners, it would pay to get a set of torx keys for future use. All the best 👍😎
I have got a set - just couldn't remember the name - my Beemer is covered in them...
@@TheMissendenFlyer you're a closet mechanic in the making 🤣😂👍👍
Top Job!!
Thank you!
Starshaped screws are called "Torx". Tail tidy looks great
Thanks for that!
Tail Tidy looks nice, not sure about the Elbow Tidy though ;-)
Hi MissendenFlyer, this is 100% my next bike. I went for a new MT-07 as its my first bike in 13 years and got a great deal. Have you ridden a MT-07? how does it compare to the Speed Twin? Also how are you getting on keeping it looking mint. Looks as it may not weather to well as I ride in all weathers. Thanks I have subscribed some great info on this channel.
Nice vid it does look a lot neater. Saw the arm brace hope not a bad sprain. love the vids keep them coming.
Need to change that yellow number plate to one of those vintage black/silver ones
Yes I am thinking about getting a 60's reg so I can do that on my Enfield...
I just put on a Brouge motorcycles tail tidy on my 2022 speed twin. Plug and play. If I can do it anyone can. Came with it's own light with proper plug.
I’m waiting for the new Speed Twin, your bike paint scheme would really suit the brown seat Triumph do. 👍 looking to buy the new Speed in Black.
Yes I have a new Speed Twin coming next month I think - I plan to make a comparison video. I alse quite fancy that brown seat for mine but am struggling with where to get one (think I have to go to a main dealer and they seem very expensive!)....
Haha yes I guess you’ll get the new speed twin sooner than me to test! I guess they are on a slow boat somewhere. Yes genuine seat is probably expensive and I have seen somewhere other companies doing them. If I find the link I’ll send over 👍
Ooh I didn't know there were after market versions - do send over if you come across any links....
Makes the back end look more sturdy i recon
Looks great 👍🏻. Out of interest what size is the smaller number plate?
7x5
Much better TMF, top
Did mine yesterday. Same issue with the hole and connector. My second issue was the screws that hold the light on are longer than the width of the tail tidy. The light is loose and the screws are tightened all the way. Might look for some washers
Interesting - I didn't have that issue??
Looks brilliant bud. Chopsy did one the other day and it spurred me on to do mine. Just seen the instructions for mine though :o Doesn't look straight forward lol.
They can be complicated - the R&G one chops did was complicated, as was the R&G one on my Honda - this was easy in comparison...
Push the bolts through the cardboard so they can't roll or move about.
Alternatively use zip lock bags and label them with a permanent marker
When I take my motorcycle apart, I do a little diagram on a piece of cardboard showing all bolt holes, and poke the bolts through the cardboard in the relevant place.👍🏻
@@kwak1k Nice tip.
@@kwak1k I just take pictures with my smartphone
Thanks for the video TMF, I am picking my 2018 Speed Cup up next week and will be ordering the TEC Tail Tidy as it really finishes off the rear end. BTW, where did you get the rear mudguard from as I would also like to order one for my SC? Keep up the good work asI enjoy all your videos..
Its standard on the Speed Twin - won't fit a Cup
@@TheMissendenFlyer Shame, I will have to get a custom one made as it really finishes off the rear end of your machine.
Thank you for posting. Quick question... Now that you have had the bike for a few weeks. Have you had the chance to take it on a longer ride and if so, how comfortable is the seat?
Actually I've yet to do a ride over about an hour and a half on it (been out of the country touring and had other bikes on test)....so far no issue with the seat..
Great Vid as always TMF, have you thought about an X-Pipe?
Already fitted...
Thanks for the video TMF. I am test riding this bike tomorrow. Have you managed to resolve the brake squeal issue you mentioned in your living with video? It's putting me off a little. I have noticed that a lot of people have had this issue with the Speed Twin. Triumph don't seem to be providing a fix from what I have read.
Not yet - going in for a service soon so I'll get the dealer to take a look...
Because summers are so busy, I've found less YT time than I would like. So I went out and bought a wireless headset (used for online meetings as well). Now I can wander around in the kitchen or outside on the patio, and still enjoy vlogger "tales" (excuse the pun), quaffing, cooking, and consuming tidbits. I may have to review this video if I'm actually going to perform a "tailectomy".
Nice one!
Hi love your reviews! I am considering buying either a Speed Twin or a Ducati Supersport. Which one you would suggest? Is the Ducati good with a pillion you think? Thanks
The Speed Twin all day long for me....
TheMissendenFlyer thanks!
For what it's worth TMF, if you do really struggle with fastner relocation , draw a rough sketch of the part in cardboard and push said fastners thru as appropriate. Hope this is of use mate.
Great idea!
First things first? I thought you said you'd been a project manager, so surely it's always that way around. :D
That's what I said didn't I?
