I'm gonna be shooting My Cat in the Back Yard @ 578 fps in 24K Raw...
you’re sick
I would own the c70 and rent the komodo. For what I do the c70 makes more sense on a daily bases and the komodo for certain projects. So I get the best bang for my buck.
Ditto. C70 for everyday. Komodo for big projects
I agree, this would be the smartest option.
Brittney sounds smart.
Or buy them on 0% finance to stagger spending big amounts of money. If your credit good 😭
@@curtsoulonline I'm not a big credit card person. at the end of the day you still have to pay it off. My credit is good so I try to stay away from credit cards and use them for more useful things personally but I do know a lot of creators that use their credit card to purchase equipment.
C70 is definitely the better pick for most people, I dont have the patience to rig the Koomdo out all the time.
Especially not for the very minimal image quality difference. SO minimal most people can't tell the difference. Especially after a grade and compression.
Yea I typically leave my Komodo rigged and dropped in a bag.
@@bwashmedia exactly just keep it rigged and ready to go
@@KeithCreative minimal image difference 😆😂 definitely haven’t seen the difference then
@@InceptiveDOP But would it really even be a difference to anyone but a pixel peeper?
Well my two questions are “Do you have the money for the Komodo?” And two “Do you have the money for the C70?”
And the answer is no on both so Idk what I’m doing here.
Haha 😆
You can rent
@@sixsoxsex1 Hmm,first to rent,it sounds on the first look great, but it is no so simple and cheapest thing- if you try to think more deeply, why? Only my opinion, sorry, but better is for me to decide and buy one machine, but I could play with it and really really deeply to know it- and this is the most important to me -longer own experience -so not only few days, but f.e. 3-6 months. And than, if it is in the end not ideal for me ?! To sell it. I know of course ,I will lose some and not so little money , but could you imagine the price of renting it for 3-6 months?:-) Even 14 days enough money:-( And the price drop after f.e. 3-6 months with cameras like these two ...I believe these types of cameras will hold their value for a little time , btw. not so good hybrid mirrorless bodies, enough some newer mark 127 or new firmware etc and value goes pretty down...).BTW.Nice video, thanks a lot!Let the light be with all of you!
Preach! xD
Man, this was incredibly helpful... I’ve watched so many videos on this topic and you blew them all away. Your two criteria were very clarifying to me... many thanks!
Bro, I just found your content through the algorithm and I have to say, you're fantastic. Poignant content, super well spoken with lots of personality, I'm super impressed. Looking forward to checking out your newer stuff!
Your video was really great. I watched it several times to get as much information out of it as possible. Really helps to decide which camera to get
Well done. Very direct and well-reasoned analysis. And the sample footage really illustrated each point you were making.
Thanks - it would be the Komodo for me.
Coming from still photography, I used to be a medium format shooter but when I bought my first SLR my images suffered because it became too easy and I found myself not concentrating enough. The fault was with me, not with the camera.
This looks to be a similar situation and I get the best results when my workflow is slow and considered, so I think the Komodo would be a better match to my mentality.
I currently use a C200/Ninja V/Gratical rig with an EOS R as a B Cam.
Very good review. I listened to it a few times actually and find that your explanation and assessment is very complete, relevant and helpful. I just wish that you addressed the auto focus issue and the way they work differently in these 2 cameras.
This video is hitting all the points man well done, just got a new subscriber!
Thanks!
I think you did a good job summarizing why I picked up a C70. I was sick of rigs, and wanted an A camera that is my workhorse and is just ready to go with an amazing image that has the ND and XLRs, stabilization built in. Love it.
I’ve been rigging for years so I completely agree.
C70 has digital stab but not optical. This is preferred in my opinion. Movement looks better on this than my R5 did. One of the reasons I got rid of it for my R5C.
I agree with every word! I've been on the fence with the A7S3, Komodo, FX6, and C70. Finally landed on the C70 since workflow is my #1 priority.
I'm really hoping BMD comes out with something like the C70. Their pocket cams are great, but need NDs and dual audio. And a frickin' IR filter.
Great balanced and informative review Brandon, it was a real help!
Global Shutter was directly sent to video editors from the Lord.
Bro you killed that! Super informative, well presented and you covered all the basis.
This has been supper helpful! Thank you!
“Top tier cameras”
Alexa Mini LF: am I a joke to you?
alexa mini is a joke u can own a red camera for the same price as renting the alexa mini for like 5 days
@@alexgiron4488 and there are reasons for that
lol mini lf is the "top tier" camera that comes to mind?
@@ReadySetGoPictures Is it not?
@@ReadySetGoPictures I think his point, is that most RED cameras (With all the additional purchases/peripherals to rig it out properly) start crawling into that next price bracket. If you're already spending 10-30k just to have a fulltime rig for bigger projects, you're probably better off with the Alexa Mini LF. (Heck, if you own something like a C70, You can just RENT an Alexa for the bigger projects and It'll probably still save you money in the long run)
There's just no comparing the quality. You don't see Roger Deakins filming on a RED. Entry level cinema cameras are getting better and better, High End cinema cameras are getting less and less expensive. And RED is just kinda getting squeezed down into a smaller and smaller place in the awkward middle of the market.
Fantastic video!! Thanks a lot for your explanations!!
This just popped up in my feed and I'm glad it did. Great video! Also...Go Coogs!
💯% well said from beginning to end about both these cameras.
Thanks for the video, it really helped make up my mind after months of going back and forth on what camera I want to get
What did you decide?
@@bwashmedia The C70, mainly since I’m just starting out and I’m already invested in RF lenses since I currently have the R6.
Very smart, I think you're right on all of this. The challenge for many of us is really that filmmaking is often an aspirational activity, and it can be hard to choose between what you need for what you're currently making vs. buying into the dream of what you WANT to be making. (And usually, buying into the dream is more expensive!)
This is the smartest, more thoughtful comment I’ve seen on RUclips in a long time.
Even that is becoming more affordable. (Not so much with ARRI)
100% true. The tool doesn't make the filmmaker but it helps push the filmmaker in the direction they want to go.
Damn you are really really good at breaking these comparisons down, I love you man.
Great video. I purchased the c70 at it's release and it has been great. You are correct...both cameras are excellent and it comes down to what your work flow looks like.
thanks for this comparison video! currently have the c70 and look into getting a komodo
Great video. For others, I suggest asking yourself: What dataset do I need? (Going off Steve Yedlins thing about all cameras basically being data collection devices). If you wish to emulate motion picture film: Komodo, no question. Global shutter is paramount for that. C70s rolling shutter isn't fast, either (15 + ms). If not, forget Komodo. C70!
totally agree! I would add that I like to Steadicam without a vest which is one of various examples when the size of the camera doesn't just affect speed but also whether you can get the shot that way or with that motion. Also AF on a Steadicam or gimbal is valuable when it's as good as canon's. Lastly for me the biggest thing is one thing not even mentioned: the FOV. the c70 has something even the c300mark3 doesn't (btw c300mark3 has a type of raw with things like nd and af etc) and that advantage of c70 is actually the canon rf to ef adapter with .71x lens. That makes every lens be two focal lengths depending on stock or .71x adapter swapped on. Not just that but why do people shoot on anamorphic? not just for flares. it's because it compresses the foreground and background so instead of stuff in back being tinier and foreground huge it makes them more equal, that is so important! getting the full frame image on the c70 with the adapter does boost the aperture too and it lets you use a 50mm with full frame look instead of cropping a 35mm for that same composition. That means that uncropped 50mm is more cinematic in my opinion. that OTS looks better, everything looks better. so yeah that damn adapter means I use the c70 over the c300markiii which I also own (unless I need to do 60 or more fps or raw). Also there is sharpening that can be added in post of course just like you have to remove noise from raw. so keep in mind it's not just more ability to color with red. it's more that you actually have to color with red. you have to remove noise in post. c70 you have to add sharpness and it will probably look better than this comparison if sharpness wasn't added here. I would take the c70 any day of the week over the red and I spend a lot of time coloring. It's not just about how good you are (like someone mentioned that as if skill would determine it) it's about how profitable and efficient you need to be. If your clients don't have budgets for you to pay another person just to pull focus and to denoise in post and all that then don't make your work less efficient and be upside down. as a video company you also have to try to give the most for the best and affordable price too. If you have budget conscious clients you should definitely get the c70. you will give them a lot more for the same money going in. if they get twice the content for the same money they might need that. especially when it's gonna play on someone's insta feed not at 6K. that's my opinion. If you have to spend twice the time shooting, twice the staffing, and twice the time editing you better have four times the budget to pay for all that time or you're just shooting yourself in the foot. Make your deliverable and value better with that client in mind of what they specifically need. and even after all that work that cropped 35mm on that red will not look as cinematic as that full 50mm on the c70 because of the c70 advantage of compressing the forground and background.
i feel the same comparing my sony a7iii and bmpcc 4k. ive got my corporate camera and my filmmaking camera!
Nice man!
Very clear overview, thank you 🙏
I just subscribed. Excellent comparison. Keep it up!
Honestly super underrated channel. Very good information here in this video especially.
Right now I’m wanting to upgrade from a canon C100 and have been considering the bmpcc6k, red komodo, c70, and the Sony fx6/9.
Idk if you have the capability to do so, but I’d love to see a comparison video on all of those lol
I low key fell in love with the Sony fx9 thanks to Potato Jet’s video on it a while back. Price is the only thing that stands in my way on most of these.
The blackmagic would maybe be the cheapest out of all of theses, but I’d have to heavily rig it out. Same with the Komodo. I think I’m really looking for something that’s ready for run and gun, and the built in ND filters are a huge factor for me since my C100 has those built in. I think you might have me sold on the c70 😂😅
Lol I’m glade you were able to work that out through your comment. Lol
I’d love to test all thoes cameras. I also have the bmpcc6k but I’d have to figure out how to get my hands on the Sony options.
what are you doing to secure the lens on Komodo with a follow focus? I am still having issues with lens rotation using the canon adapter and using a lens support on 15mm rods trying to run a follow focus
Possibly the best video I've ever watched regarding camera comparison. Thank You
Great explanation of both cameras and their best use.
Hey Brandon what one would you prefer to use for high end real estate video work.
Or should I say, what’s your camera of choice for real estate these days? Cheers Greg
Sick comparison video man. I have two C70s and I love this camera so much. Literally do not care about RED cameras anymore. They weight too much and you have to build them just to get everything to look good. My style is run and gun and that’s always how I have filmed.
Thanks for another amazing video, Brandon! Am I seeing both, C70 and Komodo, in the background? Sooo...what are you filming this one with? 😋
very nice comparison ! Thanks for sharing
Amen! Well put. Perfect explanation
Well done buddy and thanks for the comparison. I am buying both for renting.
Awesome explanation...!!!! Thank you for doing this video.....really helped me learn that the Canon C70 fits my style of filming.
I came into this video a little iffy and on defense mode, but about 1/4 the way through, it’s pretty solid. So far I’m still thinking c70 is the route for me or I may wait until the R5C that I’ve heard about
I bought the c70 and love it, don’t regret it for a minutes, I work quick lots of social projects so is perfect for my workflow
Great video! Simple but detailed information and perspectives on both these bad boys! How are you able to own both? Anyway, thanks so much, I would say the C70 is more my style and workflow.
Thanks Brandon. I was all over the map and you helped with my decision making.
Very detailed review.. 💯
Thanks for the video! My question would be how the editing workflow is different for both systems. Are the files of one camera harder on the computer? Does someone work in FCPX and is able to tell me how it handles R3D RAW, ProRes or even Canon RAW?
I mean if i need a new computer once i have the camera it does get a lot more expensive really fast 🤔
On the C70, You can record 4K on one card, then proxies on the second memory card. Then, you can edit the lower quality clips and sync them to the originals, allowing you to move much more quickly.
Hands down the best non bias video on these cameras that I’ve seen. Finally helped me get peace in my C70 purchase😀
The c70 is a great purchase!
Can it export raw?
Great work,thank you!
Dynamic range is actually higher on the canon c70, slightly, so just pointing that out. Also side by side on a top end 4k monitor... in theory there would be a big difference, but there aint. I own both due to client requests, but the c70 is extremely close in the 4k output, but with all the mentioned advantages.. and low light performance. Rolling shutter I think by far is the biggest differentiating difference.
3:43 Mabey add an update to this, like a RUclips "card" saying. C70 firmware-update added Cinema RAW lite.
Great video! I was set on the C70 but then found the Komodo. I shoot weddings and am in between if I will have enough time to get the Komodo set up and dialed in. Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't.
@11:26 what is going on with the background wobble? Was this warp stabilize in post? In camera Digital IS?
Got a Sony A7Siii before watching this. So far I'm happy, however I am seriously considering purchasing the Komodo Red for the A cam and using the Sony as a B cam. Do you have a Sony A7sii review?
Great comparison. Subscribing. :) Great advice at the end.
Agree completely.
Clear and concise! Well done bud! Still happy with my C70 😇 lolol
could you make a video to compere cinema raw light and r3d? thx
there is no content
Super. Thank you!
Well i own a 1dx mark ii and im so confused between the c70 and the red komodo or the fx6 since all my gear are canon so i removed the fx6 from my mind most of my videos are corporate and music videoes so what's your suggestions !
wise words Brandon.Great video
Great points man - very level headed thinking
Hey there. Thanks for the video ! Now that C70 has raw, do you think it’s a better money worth investment than Red Komodo ?
Thanks !
Have you done a video on the Bmpcc6k vs C70?
Coming very soon
I own the Komodo, I have used RF lenses to make a 3 short films and I love how they turned out yet people keep badgering me tp buy a PL mount and to rent PL lenses instead of using my RF cinema lenses. Is there an advantage of using PL other than the ability to use PL lenses? Does adapting give me any visual advantage?
Brilliant review
silly question, where did you get that tripod lamp??
Thank you for your time!
Yo I totally didn’t realize that you’re in Houston, I noticed in the video you were shooting with magpies and peacocks, I did a shoot not too long ago with them it would be sick to connect!
Great stuff, curious how you feel with the addition of RAW on C70 now?
I’m planning on revisiting the same topic very soon because of that reason.
Which portrays monitor are you using there attaching with your Komodo ? thanks
The thumbs down was definitely from a hater hating on the fact that you own both. SMH...your words make perfect sense bro.
lmao!!!
Thanks brother!
Super fun and informative.
I'll personally definitely prefer the RED Komodo. I want higher picture quality, I am currently considering between the Komodo/ Komodo-X or the FX9. FX9 - the whole package like you said about C70, but with 6k sensor, Komodo for really good compressed raw codec. The FX9 also has very robust mount so it's nice if I want to add heavy zoom lens, and it's more built for shoulder mounting.
Which lenses would you advise with the Komodo which will be like absolute best video quality?
What lens did you use when shooting 10:07-10:30?
Good video. Reality check for those that want a Red but don’t know why 💯
In what world would spending 8k on a canon camera that only offers 4k image a justification.
Any issue with the screen on the C70 breaking?
Curious if your opinions on this have shifted at all now that the C70 also shoots raw
Another great video
Why have the xeens over the rokinons? Super close in look!!
I'd be interested in you revisiting this video since the c70 can shoot in RAW now!
Just a correction, the C70 has a little more DR then the Komodo due to the DGO. But the Komodo has the global shutter. One will often not see the benefits to ether of these things in use.

I’m trying to decide c70 vs R5 or R6. I shoot weddings and need a camera to shoot long ceremonies. C70 seems like the pick I’ll be going with. Just sold my GH5 and need a replacement for that. So many options, but that’s a good thing.
Are the C70’s getting shipped in a decent time? Or are they becoming back ordered with the demand?
I think you're right that C70 is the best choice for that task: unlimited runtime, significantly better built-in audio options, and built-in ND filters make it an easy choice.
Great video
...and then there's the FX6 and Ursa G2, both also at the same price point. Honestly, between all four cameras there isn't a bad option. Having to choose sure does make a tough day though.
Also C200.
What monitor do you have rigged on the komodo?
Hello nice review, please on the thumbnails presentation of both the caméras I would like to know the reference of this lens thx, greeting from France peace
Brandon! I cant find the Komodo anywhere! I want the C70 as well but the R5 video looks amazing as well. Thanks,,,,,,again!
C70 is a nice all in one but the sensor arguement put it in perspective for me.
Thanks 🙏🏾
Keep it coming bro👍👍plz test Panasonic s5
It’s coming really soon.
depends is a great answer.. it's not about specs its about purpose. and situation..
I think we have to start with a better baseline of what filmmaking is versus videography. The overlap is what seems to create some product confusion.
Both cameras are fine for cinematography and I do know people who use Komodo 6K for videography.
thanks for putting the energy into the community
I have 2 Ursa G2 for feature film. And having a Komodo is great for fight scenes, chase scenes, kinda like crash cam. I don't have it but it's a great 3rd cam.
Thanks So Much
1 year later - I bought a Sony FX3 and LOVE IT. Heck, I just shot a film in s-cinetone and it looks incredible.
I curious about that Teleprompter setup on the Komodo
Two tools for two different types of work. Price tag is about only where they are similar lol
Even then, the Komodo rigged out is like $2000-3000 more, which I hope people would take into account.
I wanted a Komodo after the Bmpcc. However I made a totally different step - Panasonic S1 and cinematch. So of course less dynamic range but still enough for me and that awesome look of what ever camera I like. I bought it used very cheap. The ibis almost makes my ronin obsolete and the upcoming firmware update brings prores raw to the table. At the end the Komodo is red;-) probably the coolest cam on the market
I also want the S1... I think it is a very good run and gun
