    I bought this knife for myself to take out to the woods when I go camping and back packing. It didn't even get a chance to make it; thank's in part to my Grandson. When my daughter came to pick him up, the boy told his mom that he and Grandpa,me, had spent the day camping in my back yard, and that we had a fire and chopped wood and every thing. That was when my daughter first saw the knife. She asked me if she could see it, and that was the end of, me, owning this knife. She instantly fell in, lust, with it; from the grip, to the weight, to the handle, the blade it's self to the length of the blade. She spent the next half hour telling me why I needed to give her this, Schrade 10. I have the ,SCHF09, and have used it a lot, so when it came down to it, the knife went home with them.

    I purchased this knife a few weeks ago after watching this as well as other reviews. My only complaint about it was the grip being to large for my hand making it uncomfortable to use. I remedied it by removing the grip scales and cord wrapping it. It was a bit tricky but now fits more comfortably in my hand. Very pleased with this blade after my little mod.

    Good and hard question... the ESSE 5 gets back to the question of whether you want a GREAT steel and knife that might rust if you are caught in a WET survival or bug out situation for an extended period of time... OR if you want a lesser but good steel that will be suitable but need a bit more care on the sharpening side but is NOT likely to oxidize - i.e. rust - if you are stuck in a 3 day downpour or have to cross a river with your gear immersed.

    Great review! Last month my home was broken into and my B.o.b. was stolen and along with it most of knives and a tomahawk. Most importantly my favorite and reliable crkt windriver knife. I had the knife for more than ten years and it was my workhorse. After a lot of research and asking around I made the decision to purchase this blade before watching this video. This video confirmed my decision thank you. I didn't feel comfortable not having a reliable knife at hand.

    Get stainless knifes for processing food. It'll hold up better and be easier to clean. Get high carbon 170 1080 1095 and D2 For working. Its tougher, holds up to abuse better, and warping and shearing is all but eliminated.

    • @martinerhard8447
      @martinerhard8447 7 лет назад +1

      just not true...there are incredible sturdy stainless steel knifes as well

    • @martinerhard8447
      @martinerhard8447 7 лет назад +1

      I would even say your survival knife should be stainless steel. You wont have time to look after your knife in a survival situation so you can get rust problems. Look at the becker bk 2...awesome knife...but has rust issues if not looked after. Microoxidation on the edge will dull a blade in hours under bad conditions. Better go with good stainless steel like elmax...there are some low price alternatives too

    I got this one for my Cub Scout son. He loves it, he is a larger kid as is his father! Believe me if he stays serious about the outdoors I will get him an Esee along the way. The schf3 is really impressive for the money. It might just be me but the handle is perfect, love the micarta design, exposed pommel. The steel is 7cr17Mo probably comparable to 440b or a little better. Rockwell is high at 58-60 because softer steel allows for it. Ave. edge retention, finger choil. Same sheath as the 11.

    Yeah... I have one. The concept is good... and these Schrade ones are all one piece... It's a chunk of metal for sure. What gets me... and I told Schrade this... for some reason, someone there thought it was a good idea to put a tool kit in the hole instead of like different survival pods or kits... I think it was a missed opportunity. Anyway... Maybe I will review it sometime. But I have mixed feelings right now...

    a survival knife in most folks opinion should be able to do a few things. cut,chop,baton is a given it should also through sparks from ferro rod and if you had no ferro rod or lost it should be able to find a piece of flint or hard enough rock and throw sparks

    The only problem I have with taking the knife handle off and replacing it with paracord is if you go to use the cord then it's just the bare metal of the knife left.
    If you were to take the handles with you in your bag and a tool to change the screws, you're liable to loose the screws, the tool, the handle halves, and they take up extra space in your bag.
    It seems better to leave the knife handle alone and take paracord seperately.
    That's just my opinion, each to their own though.

    David,
    Nice library....oh yeah, and another exceptional review :). Love the fact that it is made of stainless steel.
    I really think your reviews lack detail....next time please include the lanyard hole size, the length from lanyard hole to blade tip, the cord gauge sizes from smallest to largest that will fit through said hole, and the cost of the blade if bought in a gift shop in Nepal (in Rupees, of course). Just mess'n with you :).
    Excellent and comprehensive as usual.
    Take care,
    Larry

    Carbon steel holds an edge longer than stainless, and it can throw sparks off a piece of flint if you need it to.

    If you want a light knife for small cutting chores or tactical use only then the Sog Seal Pup is a good choice. If you want a knife for a variety of tasks then you want the SCHF10.

  • @UltimateSurvivalTips
    @UltimateSurvivalTips  11 лет назад

    I would look first at the SOG Seal Team Elite or the Seal Pup first. I did a review of the Seal Team Elite. Check it out. Also the Prodigy Tanto or the LHR (but grab an LHR quick... Gerber is no longer making them)... I did a review on this knife a year ago.

    That's a tough call... If you like Bear Grylls and want more of a survival package... go with the Ultimate Pro... if you want more of a military, tactical survival knife with serrations, go with the LMF II if you want a good all around knife and a good performer for bushcraft, maybe the SCHF10. Hope this helps. ~David

    I too overlooked the sheath for the knife. If the sheath had a snap and a molle strap, it'd have been perfect for around $50. I will either buy a kydex sheath on line (~$50 with mole clips and shipping) or attempt to rework the sheath with new strapping. But wow, what a knife for $50!

    I shall one of these days. If you are hitting your target and your knives aren't sticking... make sure your target is not too hard... softer woods work better for targets... and make sure you have good points. Nothing makes a knife NOT stick more then knifes that are NOT pointy. Also... throwing speed / power makes a difference... especially for knives that are lighter. Heavier knives seem easier to stick.

    Great design, good steel, and very reasonably priced. The only thing that I am not too crazy about is the thickness of this blade. Personally, I prefer it to be little thinner, which would make it little lighter in the hand. I just think that this super thick blade trend is little excessive for the most part, I mean what are the probability of anyone absolutely having have to use this knife as an ax?
