I know everyone has their personal opinion, but I love this knife. The reason being is that it has everything you can ask for from a knife and that's all that matters. It has a sharpener, hand guide, whistle, fire starter, sheath, comfortable grip, strong hilt, full tang, balanced, and keeps a good edge what more do u need from a 70 dollar knife. Again I respect everyone's opinion but I personally love this knife
Rust, cheap sheets, bad materials means your safety. This guy is on contract this knife sucks. Get an esse, tops, Utica and go with a premium material. Mora is not full tang but the modified Scandinavian grind will save you.
It's a good knife for the money it's light and has a really grippy handle, most people will never put a knife through that much abuse, real world use is what counts I have this knife and love it
Love this knife loads of nostalgia from bush crafting with the ultimate pro. BG used to make some crap knives but the ultimate pro really is a good solid knife.
This knife is well worth the money, I am really happy with it. I use it camping, fishing, hiking and it hasn't let me down yet , I even have used it as a spear too spear fish in shallow water which worked really well but I guess there will always be people who think that a more expensive knife is better . But I guess everyone has different opinions and some people just try to find faults because they have nothing better to do but hey "whatever blows your hair back "
jamie smith The people who are knocking this knife do not own one or used one. There is nothing you can do with a $200 knife that you cannot do with the ultimate pro. I have several expensive knives and I would put this knife up against any of them, even my ka-bar.
I Got one of these knives after seeing this video. Great review. The thing that convinced me was the Hammer test. And it has been worth the Purchase And still serves me well although the whistle and fire steel where lost after getting snagged on wind fall. Because I had placed the whistle on the loop on the fire steel. Creating the snag hazard. Thanks again for the Great review.
I've had the original BG Gerber survival knife for 4 years and it's been worked hard. I keep it sharp and it does the job well and without incurring any damage. I can't really fault it to be honest. I don't see what some of these guys are whining about and criticizing a good everyday product for the average guy to use. If you want super special steel and super this and that you'll pay through the nose for it and likely never use it except to show your buddies what a wonderful new knife you have. If it's important to you so much then go spend your money on what pleases you most, not criticizing and whining like spoiled prima donna brats.
Dan Lundberg Actually I am better off with the choice I made for my own reasons and prefer not to be pressed into buying products that are no better than the one I have, moreover they cannot be proven to be better either, so I'll stick with what I have. All the best.
Idk about that. I paid $170 for just my silent hero and couldnt be happier with this knife. Not a special steel, just 1095 but also diff tempered. I have this edge hair splitting sharp and it will hold that edge a long time. Not to mention i love the design of the handle and is very comfortable to use. I guess everyone has their own tastes.
I have never seen review given in such a elaborated, precise and showing its pros By product in various situations this is something that really builds up more confidence of the buyer of the products
I use my knives for their intended purpose: to cut things. I respect them, I don't use them as a chisel, pry-bar or ballistic weapon, so I don't much care how much abuse they take during these antics. I like a 4" or so blade, I consider serration magic for certain cutting chores and I use a Gerber Steel (no longer made) to put the last dry-shaving edge on my blades. No need for sharpening tools with my knife, diamond or otherwise. I'm Airborne, Ranger and Recondo Qualified, so don't need the survival pamphlet or whistle, thank you very much. I use a lanyard around the thumb and across the back of my hand when cutting, so I don't worry about slippage, wet or dry. The full tang on the newer model is a definite plus, but I just don't see me doing anything that will break my original in two. The whole nylon sheath thing just pissed me off, so I removed it and attached the hard sheath directly to my gun belt with a leather strap and pop rivets. I don't plan on upgrading, since I require partial serration. In fact, at 74, I don't plan on replacing my Gerber, having every confidence that it will give me good service in the field or garrison for the rest of my life. The bright orange is nice, but only for fools like me who occasionally set their knife on the ground in the middle of a task and then have to look for it. In short, I find the original very satisfactory and plan on keeping it in daily use. The video was well-made and informative. BTW, I am no great fan of Bear or Gerber, just require a serviceable knife with the features I require, cost is not a major factor, but I don't want to go into the field with anything I'm not willing to lose, with the exception of my life.
I just bought this knife after comparing it to everything else on the market. Out of the box, it shaved my arm hair and is skery sharp! It's checked all the boxes for me! Good job Gerber!
I own the pro knife for a year now and I've used it for everything from rock climbing to backpacking and the hatchet from gerber and it's very reliable and the canteen I use every day and its great I own the BG scout and I rather use the SOG escape more reliable keep posting the great vids David I hope you can do a review on the les stroud knives
Too many people bitching about the name, scratch bg off and its a decent knife, not a falkniven or becker bk 7 but for the price its not bad ,id say the steel is slightly better than aus8 just dont use a pull sharpener and keep it lightly oiled , sheath is actually well thought out. My advice a schrade fronteir is a better option or save a little and get a bk2 as a one tool option, get this knive if you dont care about branding it will work either way
Great question. No, the sheaths are not interchangeable with the knives. The entire locking mechanism and geometry of the knives are more different than they look.
I am fairly new to bushcraft and will be taking several classes this summer. Because the cost I bought the BG ultimate and it seems to be doing ok for now....I love that gerber made a much better version and the BG pro goes on the short list when I decide to upgrade. Thanks again for another outstanding vid !
Everybody hates it but when you get down to it there are really few fails with this model. I don't like the look of it in terms of colour and BG logo but its stainless and easy to sharpen.
I've had mine going on 4 years and it performs well with no complaints except the orange color. A little black dye fixed that. Gerber fixed blade knives such as the Strongarm and LMF are great knives also. Now if only Gerber would make their folders the same quality.
Even in the years since this review this knife has yet to be broken. I like this knife. It is too bad this line of knifes got such a bad wrap because people don’t like Bear Grylls.
It's a bit of a toss up... but for me... since I like more a military / tactical blade... I personally carry the LMF II MUCH more often... plus the LMF II is made in Portland OR... so... US made make me favor the LMF II a bit.
Your reviews get better and better. I feel confident in the information you give and appreciate you doing the dirty work for us! Aside from the price, this knife is stellar. Thanks for the complete review, not to mention bashing it for quality measurement!
love how all these people think they know more than a man who served the sas, specialises in survival and is a chief scout and one of the biggest knife brands gerber about how a survival knife should be XD. I bought the survival pro and I can't find a single fault. full tang, strong steel, solid sheath with fire steel and sharpener which would never fall out as it's very secure. I did a bit of research before buying it and most knives that quality were around the same price. people think just because it's bear grylls it's overpriced
He doesnt even use these tools. Gerber makes them then tells him to endorse it since he has a contract with them. In reality SAS wouldn't use this crap. Stop being so naive
Hmmm... good question... I think the PRO of the two... I like the versatility of the PRO package, handle, sharpener... I might slightly favor the AUS-8 steel of the Force... but not by much.
I was never into survivalist stuff until I stumbled across this page. I even bought the Condor 3 Day Assault Pack just to get started. My next purchase will be the GearPODS survival kit. I love this channel!
To all those who have negative comments about this knife. I have only this to say. To turn up your nose at a product because of its gimmicky branding, is just as ignorant as to fall in love with it for the same reason. I took a chance and spent the $45 on the Ultimate Survival knife with the same reservations I'm sure you all have, and its become my favorite camp knife. I use it whenever I go on camping trips, I use it often, and heavily, and work my blades hard. I Think its a fantastic knife, and recommend it all the time. Are there "better" knives out there, well yeah, but its kind of like using a .50 BMG or .30-06 to hunt deer when a 6.5x55 will do the job just fine. Just because this knife isn't done exactly the way YOU think it should be done, doesn't make it junk. Anyone on here who says this is a trash blade obviously has never bothered to try one out.
Thank you for having the first coherent post I've seen so far!! I bought the Pro and love how it feels in my hands. That rubber grip makes for a perfect grip even if my hand was sweaty and the blade is solid. Sure, I hate all the stupid BG orange everywhere but beyond that it is an awesome knife. Some people are so closed minded that they will take what they think they'll believe and go to the grave with them regardless of anything. They'll tell you the sky is green before they admit you were right.
I 100% agree. Interesting how the only negative comments seem to be from those who have likely never even held it in their hand. Notice the have ZERO experience to draw from ? (mmmmm.....) yet everyone who has it swears by it. Pretty obvious whos opinions are worth reading and whos are not. Mine should be here in a week, and if it performs at least 50% as well as the very best and most expensive knives out there (probably actually closer to 80%) then it is a great knife for about 1/3 or even 1/4 of the cost. :)
Great comment buddy! I could not agree with you more. All the knife throwing, stabbing it into a stump or in the ground is part of the stress test on the knife and for some entertainment. Everybody knows I love to throw knives :-). Thanks again for an awesome comment!
Just a little side note. For 20-30 bucks more (going off of the Amazon $60 price tag) you can get a much higher quality knife thats made in the US and the company will replace it for free if you break it. Look at the ESEE 4
Well I agree with you, but I would not say you even need to go to $60 for a knife that is much better quality than the BG stuff. The new Schrades maybe made in China, but they are made very well comparatively and will defiantly out do the Gerber stuff. Also the Cold Steel SRK ($70-$80) is made in Tiwan and is far superior to the BG, not to mention the Beker line. Some of the best sub $80 outdoor blades I have seen are coming from Condor (El Salvidor mind the spelling) And if you want made in America Buck and Ontario has a lot to offer, not quite as well finished as the Esee counterparts but a lot less expensive. What I am getting at, people looking at a Bear Grylls most likely are not willing to pay $100 on something they are new to. I am all for Esee, but prefer companies like Tops, Bark River, Scrap Yard, Swamp Rat, and so on.
Yeah I know there are kuch better knives at or around the same price point. Which is why I stay away from even the higher end Gerbers. Im not saying get a $300 blade. In my experience, you get the best bang for your buck 80-200 range.
But yeah people buying these generally dont care or don't understand what makes a survival knife good or not. They see a fairly mainstream survival "expert" and assume it has to be good
Yeah that is about what I would say. In the world of out door knives $200 can get you a Esee Junglas or Cold Steel Trail Master, or better yet a Scrap Yard 911. Of course if you want the absolute best you need to pork out like $500 for a BlackHeart or some other mid tech, but those are really more than anyone needs. If you keep track of a small company called Bradford Knives, you may be able to get one of their mid size knives for $150, but I am sure that will go up to the $300s by this time next year. And in the world of folders that will get you a Spyderco Manix 2 ($90) or a ZT 0562 ($200) is you want something more extravagant. And once again if you want the best you should find for about $1000 you can get a RockStead, but same story most functionality but more than anyone really needs objectively as a tool.
Excellent review, and a really nicely edited video too. A lot of RUclipsrs neglect editing but you did a great job there. I'm now off to see what others videos you've created.
You can get many decent survival tools and items for FREE (shipping cost only) here: docs.google.com/document/d/1wXpKeLN_xlsDQvYxsrtNl3gOQt6PM54b1HYToMwMsPY/edit?usp=sharing
It's all pretty simple when you get the knife. I think... although I'm not sure now... but I do think the knife comes with instructions on how to reverse the sharpener. It's pretty hard to mess up. You take off the guard, 2 bolts... put the blades in the other side (for lefties)... there are notches shaped to receive the blades... and you screw the bolts back in. That's it. Hope this helps! ~David
idk why people bitch about this knife had mine for 5 years now used plenty of times and never failed me i added a pouch with a survival tin and attached it with a 550cord bracelet its roughly the same weight
+Teddy Milan i ment the original half straight half serrated not this one specifically i know alot of people bitch about the original but i find it super usefull
Thank you so much for putting your video of the bear grylls ultimate pro fixed blade knife i love the knife i give it a 10 out of 10 ive had thousands of survival knives throughout my life witch ive used in every situation you can think of and in every kind of terain you can find yourself in this one is the top of the line i would recommend this knife to all who seeks the perfect knife
Bear gets a bunch of crap from people yet 10 yes ago everyone loved him, only in America right, one day your drinking water from elephant turds and the next day your sniffing wine and buying land. He did exactly what he should have, unlike football stars who break a leg and are out of luck he will be able to take care of his family even after hes dead. Actually after seeing this and reading other comments I'm going to buy one just to put more money in his pocket and to support my local home businesses. Thanks for the awesome review.
Those are nice knives I have owned one. They do have a couple issues. (1) if you are in a "bug out" situation , you don't want nothing orange. (2) I prefer a cerated base. It is better for gutting animals. (3) the ferro rod is tiny. It will do the job though. You can in my opinion get better. The SOG seal pup has full tang blade , it is all black, it is also designed for tactical as well as survival. It does not come with a ferro rod , but you can get a big ferro rod for about $8.00. (At least here you can) the blade is shorter but that can save your fingers! It is also preferred by lots of active military personel. They run about $50 for just the knife and sheath. Mine has never let me down.
Airik1111, I agree. I got the knife and hatchet set from Amazon and am very pleased. The hatchet is pretty thick and has some weight to it. Has the "stuff you probably won't ever need" but that's cool. People's bad opinions are like, well you know.
I actually got the original knife when they first came out, though I never had much issue with the pommel as other people had. But when it first came out, it was only available in the half-serrated edge and that made me use it a little less than I would have liked. I use the SOG seal pup elite most of the time, despite it being a slimmer, less sturdy-seeming knife.
Great video and review! Camera work was A+ You're right the price needs to come down.... still up at $70.52 with Amazon Prime. Can't justify that when you can still get the Becker BK2 @ $69.99 on Amazon Prime..... At the end of the day this knife is still for weekend warriors and Bear Grylls groupies.
Sure the BK2 is nice but it's just too big for me so the BG U Pro works perfectly for me and feels amazing in my hands. Don't forget the BK2's sheath is hated by almost everybody so you'll have to get a new one so add another $20-$30 to it.
YES! I hate the sheath! You're being kind about the sheath cost too.. so for the only sheath that I like for te BK2 is from Skystorm and its around $70... LOL
Loved your review on the Gerber Bear Grylis Ultimate Pro Survival knife. I'm sold. Have been looking at reviews to aid in purchasing a good all round utility knife for camping and backpacking. This unit is so packed with features and sturdy that I need not look any further. Let Gerber know that it was your review that sold me. Thanks again and I'm off to see the rest of your reviews
For the money that’s actually a really good knife i’ve seen other videos where people are literally abusing that knife it doesn’t break and the steel is pretty decent if you’re on a budget that’s actually an excellent knife I like high-quality Knives I’m actually thinking about buying one Pretty tough I’d say it’s extremely well-built you’re smacking that thing with a 3 to 4 pound sledge and it didn’t break the handles didn’t fly off most knives that’s most likely what will happen That’s actually a knife you can buy this is what I’m gonna do with it by I just Buy it sharpened good and just throw it in the glove box of my jeep so I always have it if somebody steal it’s not a big deal I’ll just buy another one
I liked the video demonstration David. I have not had any reason to be a Bear Grylls fan thus far but I'll certainly check out this survival knife. According to the demo, the knife appears to be quite durable and functional. I like the sheath, fire starter, whistle and the survival tips pamphlet. I question the quality of the steel and country of origin. I haven't checked, but is the origin of steel made in China? Is this knife made in China? I would be surprised if it was not. Anyway, I'll do my homework with all the posted links. I did subscribe to your channel.
Well in Australia you never carry this type of equipment in your vehicle because the cops love stopping people forcing themselves on your privacy and stealing for themselves whatever they think is 'handy. Their excuse is: ' it's a 'dangerous weapon your carrying''. They have so far stolen over at least $300.00 worth of my personal travelling equipment I carry as survival gear because I travel a lot. They always insist on searching my gear and then things conveniently disappear. The last thing they took was my brand new tomahawk and they didn't even try to hide the fact they were taking it. Stinking thieves!
Really solid and informative video mate. I like the amount of effort you go to show us the gear you review. Not to mention the amount of editing and stitching you must do for these vids. I have the Ultimate Survival Fine Edge Knife and after seeing this vid I will purchase the Pro Knife for my emergency kit. Keep up the great work man.
Gosh it happened once. Plus he still climbs the mountains, eats the food, and makes the shelter. It never says in the show that he actually spent the night.
Great review as usual David... Well I have to say that I own the ultimate pro knife, and his older brother the ultimate. Both of these knives are tough, durable and can take a beating. I tried my best to destroy the ultimate knife and two years later it took a hammer to break the very tip of it off. I put it on a grinding wheel and back to the woods I go, with my ultimate knife. I'm confident that this knife will perform like my Lmf2 and my Becker bk2 knife. Two thumbs up Gerber.
I had this knife. I bought it at a flea market for 40 and it was amazing. They stopped selling it so if you still have it. Hold on to it or sell it for a good price.
Any knife is legal in the uk but you must have a good reason to carry it. Don't go walking down a liberal infested city centre with one on your belt and you will be fine. Just keep it in your bag and say it's for hunting or bushcraft.
I got one and it is very durable, reliable, the blade stays sharp and would still slice a tomato even after I had split small logs. This is well worth the money !!!
Paolo Calabria Been using mine at work (landscaping) as well as recreation (camping, hunting, fishing, etc). I have put this knife through hell for quite some time and it has held up just fine
From what i hear, this knife is garbage. Could be better than i think, it could be an amazing knife. I saw one at walmart, i was so close to buying it. But i stopped myself because ive hear alot of bad things about this knife.
+Paolo Calabria The only bad things they have to say is that it is endorsed by a celebrity. This knife will do everything you need it to do. It will not let you down.
He always does a good job, I think he looks at stuff in a practical way and doesn't try to make up stuff to sell you on his opinion, tells it like it is, and lets you make the call.
I stumbled upon both the Ultimate AND the Pro at half price months apart. I though they would make good beginner's practice knife, especially for the price. I was a bit wrong: the Pro now lives in my BOB and I do use the Ultimate for stupid crazy banging to spare my Mora's. Rolled the edge batoning on top of a rock, but it rolled less than my Mora Companion stainless and was easier to straighten (probably mostly due to different grind angles). IT IS A VERY GOOD KNIFE, don't believe those who never tried it.
Can I just say that regardless of the specific item's quality, this is possibly the best review I have ever seen. Like ever, of any product. I think it's the calm authority more than anything else.
The Gerber BG knives are such a massive step down from the pre-Gerber knives he used to use. Understand it had to lose some quality to make a reasonable Gerber price point. But even the "ultimate pro" uses a super crappy Chinese Cr-mov series steel. His previous handmades were powder forged, zero compromise works of art. Gerber could take a much higher quality approach to the BG line without making them a huge amount more expensive. I'm surprised they don't. BG knives should have an image of quality. Instead Gerber has made the brand almost entry level, which doesn't fit with the BG brand IMHO.
For starters you are quoting the steel on the older model, not the pro which has been upgraded to what experts are comparing to a decent US equivalent. But the Question I have for you is....have YOU actually tried it or are you like all the other idiots on here forming opinions on zero experience ? No its not the best out there, but I like a heavier blade with a hollow grind is more useful overall than a Mora, and for what you are getting it will likely perform to 60-70% of what a $300 knife will for only 1/3 of the cost. But obviously you didn't consider any of this at all.
Paul Hiebert - in fairness to Jonoderidder, his comment was made 4 years ago. Had they come out yet with this newer, better version by then? I agree with your specs I just don't know that this newer knife you're talking about had been released then.
That price is crazy. I bought it for $40 when it first came out and now it basically doubled in price. I was lucky to buy it when it was first released and now worth way more than i paid. Definitely a great must have knife in a knife collection. The srk is a great knife to have as well which is $36 on a good day but usually consistent around $40-$45. The srk is my chosen edc knife. My grail knife is the case bowie xx which i still have yet to get my hands on
Just some information for you guys. The metal this knife is made out of is 9Cr19MoV, which is a chinese version of 440C. 440C is one of the best American stainless steels there is and is comparable to AUS 8. Most companies "including Gerber" use 420HC which is inferior to 440C to make their knives in America. 9Cr19MoV is one of the best Chinese stainless steels there is, and is used for their pricey surgical tools and barber sissors.Gerber calls 9Cr19MoV a "Premium" steel and it is.I have seen this knife do some amazing things, and I have yet to see a video of someone breaking this knife " And trust me if there was one it would be all over RUclips" simply because alot of haters hate Bear Grylls.Unlike the "Ultimate", this knife was made to take abuse, and you simply cannot go wrong with a strong stainless steel knife that can do what this knife can, yet come with all of the features it does, and the price at $68.00 dollars on Amazon is a steal. You may not like BG, but give this fine blade the respect it deserves. Its a affordable and dependable survival knife you can trust.1095 blades are awesome, but they rust, and in a survival situation if you don't have WD-40, chapstick, or mineral oil, your gonna wish you had stainless. So IMHO this is a great Survival Knife you can trust reguardless of whos initials are on it.
440 rusts . Give your high carbons a forced patina. The 440 family are not premium stainless. 70 bucks get a Utica, tops or even esse. Would you leave your hands in the life of Walmart??? Tops also offer 154cm, white river offers s35v, benchmade will give you great material. Save another 30 bucks and change the game! This is just a glow stick.
"Literally beat the tar out of it"? This implies that the knife is made with a gooey tar centre, and that you were so rough on it during testing that it oozed from its core.
Jokes 10 I do that with razor sharp knives all the time. Your speaking as if my life is endangered. Every time I drive, I’m at more risk than shaving my arm with a knife. I’ve cut myself many times, I’ve seen my own flesh and muscle, tendons, and bone. I haven’t died since. I’ve cleaned the wound and stitched it.
I think the first version was a bit of a mistake, half serrated blade? 3/4 tang? Easily damaged stone? I bought the ultimate pro, and i've yet to fault it. The only things i've changed are,i polished the blade, shined up real nice, the black finish looked terrible after using to baton wood. And, the whistle cord, put that onto fire steel, and secured with some hair bands(don't tell wife lol) to the sheath. Can't lose it now. Received a few compliments about how it looks, overall very happy with it. Difference between the first version and this is like night and day. Buy one.👍
+thorin dyer if they did that they would have to give up misusing a knife as an axe/machete like i see in every video posted on youtube. or in this idiots case, throwing it. this knife is aimed at the weekend warrior market, rather than serious outdoors folk who know the correct way to use a tool.
Doesn't matter who the market target is. If it works it works. Have only seen videos of the original failing. None for the pro. Cold steel and buck seem to have the most fail videos. I own some of both and they have never let me down
this isnt "Ultimate Survival Tips" this is more or less "The Ultimate Hocking of Bear Grillis' Dirt Cheap and "You Get What You Pay For" Survival Type Tools"....you should really change the name of the channel....80% of the vids are this cheap ass chinese BG endorsed junk...great if you get paid to promo this crap, but dont act like this is a tips and prep channel....hell Gerber isnt even a good blade anymore....people should know that....when a company's name cant sell the product abd you have to celebrity endorse it to sell it you know theres a issue with the product (think Beats).....
Bear Grylls? Isn't he the guy who got busted sleeping in motels and eating cheeseburgers when he was suppose to be sleepin' out in the woods eatin' raw lizards?
he never claims to be a hardcore survivalist and his show is more for enterainment than anything. In fact, les stroud has been exposed to have stayed less than 300 feet from a high way
Very good and well made review. Clear, technical and explanatory images. Thank you. Did not think it was really necessary to cut a tree off in order to demonstrate how good the knife is performing such task.
Bear Grylls is such a massive sell out these days. I mean, he has a reality show and he constantly advertises Walmart. Walmart... survival in America, I guess.
dude all i am saying is he jumped blindly into a deal with gerber notorious for recalls. why not make a deal with Buck or a more reputable company. i am a fan of gerber but the lately have been sucking balls. He shows you how to get killed in his show yes i know he could out survive me for sure i dont have military survival training but i took 2 survival classes with less stroud last summer and his skills are way more practical in his show he does like back flips and shit and runs for no reason plus when he's out he has like twenty guys with him theres a video on youtube of him showing his crew.
I'm never usually into stuff like this but this was a really cool review. I really like Bear Grylls and wouldn't mind owning one of these. As you say, "Be Prepared because you never know". The knife looks kickass too!
that knife it's a joke, like JGBLADES SAID, your probably been support $ by Gerber and Bear G. I never seen someone like this knife so much. worth fail on this knife its the loop for the belt
Again I respect everyone's opinion but I personally love this knife
bilal sabri it's really an amazing knife.
Amen
bilal sabri yeah I wish I had this knife but I wouldn’t have enough
Rust, cheap sheets, bad materials means your safety. This guy is on contract this knife sucks. Get an esse, tops, Utica and go with a premium material. Mora is not full tang but the modified Scandinavian grind will save you.
It also has a compass in the handle and a thing that tells time.
It's a good knife for the money it's light and has a really grippy handle, most people will never put a knife through that much abuse, real world use is what counts I have this knife and love it
Price of this knife please????
Imran Khan it’s $74.21 (US dollars). I got mine when I was in middle school lol it’s been serving me well through the years
Really not a bad knife to keep as an extra in a bug out bag.
But I guess everyone has different opinions and some people just try to find faults because they have nothing better to do but hey "whatever blows your hair back "
jamie smith
jamie smith The people who are knocking this knife do not own one or used one. There is nothing you can do with a $200 knife that you cannot do with the ultimate pro. I have several expensive knives and I would put this knife up against any of them, even my ka-bar.
I totally agree !!!
jamie smith I agree. This is a great knife. period.
Here we are almost 6 years later and absolutely no price drop. Still $72 on Amazon.

walmart 50$
x.adam1 . . . The leash is too short to stick your hand in it should be the purpose
x.adam1 . . . This guy don’t know much about survival the leash must be longer so you don’t lose your knife in any situation!!
You are most welcome and thanks for checking us out.
Thanks again for the Great review.
got mine yesterday, this knive has the best grip i've ever felt, i am one happy camper, ready too
How much was it
I've had the original BG Gerber survival knife for 4 years and it's been worked hard.
+Clearwaters You'll be better of with a Fällkniven F1 or S1 instead of this one.
This is probably one of the best and professionally done informational videos I have ever seen on UTube
The entire locking mechanism and geometry of the knives are more different than they look.
this is how every review should be!!!!!!!!!!!
I am fairly new to bushcraft and will be taking several classes this summer. Because the cost I bought the BG ultimate and it seems to be doing ok for now....I love that gerber made a much better version and the BG pro goes on the short list when I decide to upgrade. Thanks again for another outstanding vid !
seen lots of hates toward this knife, I bought one, it's fine, I'd give it a 6.5/10. not the best but it gets the job done.
Newman Gan you'll see.
Mars Seeker still working fine.
Everybody hates it but when you get down to it there are really few fails with this model. I don't like the look of it in terms of colour and BG logo but its stainless and easy to sharpen.
Yeah, the look is the only thing keeping me back
I've had mine going on 4 years and it performs well with no complaints except the orange color.
Totally I agree with you.
It's a bit of a toss up... but for me... since I like more a military / tactical blade... I personally carry the LMF II MUCH more often... plus the LMF II is made in Portland OR... so... US made make me favor the LMF II a bit.
Personally I have been using the Cold Steel SRK since 2010. That knife holds up very good! Would love to see a review on it!
Exactly!! Its a damn good knife. Way better than les strouds knifes.
@Universal Kombat I agree. The pro looks great
You forgot chief cook and bottle washer.
Agreed
He doesnt even use these tools. Gerber makes them then tells him to endorse it since he has a contract with them. In reality SAS wouldn't use this crap. Stop being so naive
Hmmm... good question... I think the PRO of the two... I like the versatility of the PRO package, handle, sharpener... I might slightly favor the AUS-8 steel of the Force... but not by much.
Love this knife it's so practical and has so much features
Michel Azar It sucks.
Moras are waaaaay better this knife sucks
From the things you point out, it looks like gerber put a lot of thought into improving their design.
Great review! It is very detailed.
Thank you
$70? Holy shit! In the UK, the cheapest one I can find is £89.99... equating to roughly $148...
Hello Nicholas, thanks for the comment and stopping by our channel!
yes, but can you shoot down planes with it?
Sure can, if you have a good imagination or you take a shit ton of mushrooms.
Yeah if you’re chuck Norris
@@hunter0161 you mean MacGyver
Only with the semi auto assault model🤣🤣
Ask John Wick
Rusty Shackleford it is good :)
Excellent review, and a really nicely edited video too. A lot of RUclipsrs neglect editing but you did a great job there. I'm now off to see what others videos you've created.
You can get many decent survival tools and items for FREE (shipping cost only) here: docs.google.com/document/d/1wXpKeLN_xlsDQvYxsrtNl3gOQt6PM54b1HYToMwMsPY/edit?usp=sharing
thanks Jeff
People's bad opinions are like, well you know.
fuk him & his family too... poser
4:15 do you have ARM DANDRIFF? what IS that
That is dry skin
Not Me shave with a dull knife and you will see it on your arms too.
Not Me it's literally just dry skin.
It is skin........
They are some sort of molded plastic coated in the grippy stuff...
Great video and review! Camera work was A+
You're right the price needs to come down.... still up at $70.52 with Amazon Prime.
Thanks again and I'm off to see the rest of your reviews
i don't know what the hell i want to buy this knife. i mean i don't even go outside my house
LOL
Then, why are you here?
Hi, couch potato
Just grow a pair and get it
Grim Reaper WELL GO OUTSIDE MAN!!!
You know... this is a really good point. This steel should not need a coating with it's high level of chrome. Thanks
For the money that’s actually a really good knife i’ve seen other videos where people are literally abusing that knife it doesn’t break and the steel is pretty decent if you’re on a budget that’s actually an excellent knife I like high-quality Knives I’m actually thinking about buying one
Pretty tough I’d say it’s extremely well-built you’re smacking that thing with a 3 to 4 pound sledge and it didn’t break the handles didn’t fly off most knives that’s most likely what will happen
That’s actually a knife you can buy this is what I’m gonna do with it by I just Buy it sharpened good and just throw it in the glove box of my jeep so I always have it if somebody steal it’s not a big deal I’ll just buy another one
Thanks for the comment... My BIG blitz of BG gear is passed... More from other brands coming...
Great channel with very professionally produced and well researched vids, new sub here David!
I'm getting one of these. I like that I can switch the sharpener to the left.
I bought this knife as well. I can only recommond it !!! :)
Keep up the great work man.
that's a cute little knife ... do you think bear keeps one under his nap pillow at the JW Marriott after a long couple of hours filming at the zoo>?
Gosh it happened once. Plus he still climbs the mountains, eats the food, and makes the shelter. It never says in the show that he actually spent the night.
Why do you people like to hate on him so much?
I like this knife as well I have it myself
Great review as usual David... Well I have to say that I own the ultimate pro knife, and his older brother the ultimate. Both of these knives are tough, durable and can take a beating. I tried my best to destroy the ultimate knife and two years later it took a hammer to break the very tip of it off. I put it on a grinding wheel and back to the woods I go, with my ultimate knife. I'm confident that this knife will perform like my Lmf2 and my Becker bk2 knife. Two thumbs up Gerber.
he will never bang his msk1 into a stomp top like that
I had this knife. I bought it at a flea market for 40 and it was amazing. They stopped selling it so if you still have it. Hold on to it or sell it for a good price.
I have one in barely used condition. I still plan to use it though. My dad bought it for me at 10 years old but still have it at 20.
Legal in uk?
yes like here in italy
+CONOR XP nope but swiss army knives are
+CONOR XP cant have fixed blades or lock bladers in most EU countries, folding knifes only ,not longer then 7cm or so..
Any knife is legal in the uk but you must have a good reason to carry it. Don't go walking down a liberal infested city centre with one on your belt and you will be fine. Just keep it in your bag and say it's for hunting or bushcraft.
Great video.
I've had this knife in my amazon wish list for 2 years after watching this video it's time I buy it.
Thank you.
I got one and it is very durable, reliable, the blade stays sharp and would still slice a tomato even after I had split small logs. This is well worth the money !!!
jamie smith You could slice a tomato with any sharp object, not much of an accomplishment. Trust me bro, it wont hold up over time.
+Paolo Calabria Probably because your "heard" but never actually got your hands on one. Give it a try first then say your piece.
Looks like some good upgrades. I have the earlier version and the ferro rod dropped out and was lost the 2nd time out.
Bear Grylls' knives are much less cumbersome to carry. Once they snap in two, you can easily carry it in both front pockets.
If you're doing something weird enough to snap this steel into two pieces, you were using it wrong. You should have been using something else.....
Hahaha
He always does a good job, I think he looks at stuff in a practical way and doesn't try to make up stuff to sell you on his opinion, tells it like it is, and lets you make the call.
I'd rather have the Mora Bushcraft Black with the plastic sheath over that
I actually bought this thing and its really good. like seriously
Clearly this is better, you just cannot afford it.
DHC DeepBlue Clearly, you are being rude.
Just stating the obvious. I used to have a mora it was good, until I saved up and got better knives.
DHC DeepBlue Like you know a lot about me! Mind your own business, like an adult!
Impressive, professional review.
I can normally tell if a review is going to be thorough from it's first minute.
Great video! :)
Who is waatching this on 2019
I am. I just recently bought 2 of these knives. This video helped me make the decision.
Yup, I have both versions and like them more than when I bought them at half price.
It's great knife but people abuse it because they don't like Bear Grylls.
"it was able to cut through my hair on my arm"
me, sitting here with a knife that cant cut through a rope
Can I just say that regardless of the specific item's quality, this is possibly the best review I have ever seen. Like ever, of any product.
I think it's the calm authority more than anything else.
Thanks, excellent review.
Cool! That would be one cool way to chop vegetables when preparing dinner!
Instead Gerber has made the brand almost entry level, which doesn't fit with the BG brand IMHO.
i know man look at the applegate fair bain 154 cm automatic excellence.
***** agree
For starters you are quoting the steel on the older model, not the pro which has been upgraded to what experts are comparing to a decent US equivalent. But the Question I have for you is....have YOU actually tried it or are you like all the other idiots on here forming opinions on zero experience ? No its not the best out there, but I like a heavier blade with a hollow grind is more useful overall than a Mora, and for what you are getting it will likely perform to 60-70% of what a $300 knife will for only 1/3 of the cost. But obviously you didn't consider any of this at all.
Paul Hiebert -
in fairness to Jonoderidder, his comment was made 4 years ago. Had they come out yet with this newer, better version by then? I agree with your specs I just don't know that this newer knife you're talking about had been released then.
@@IamDoogy They did. This video is about it....
My grail knife is the case bowie xx which i still have yet to get my hands on
this is tv-shop disguised as a youtube review channel...you can tell by his pro tv-shop narration...however great reviews;)
i agree
You're reviews are the best man! I always come here first before going to any other source, keep doing what you're doing and cheers!
Dutch Bushcraft Knives show how pathetic this blade is. Its beyond awful haha

Sounds cool. I have sooooo many knives to review... but I will look at this in the fall if you remind me. Thanks bro.
Kabar bk2 -60$ just sayin
Amen and thanks for some sanity within this terribly mis-lead video.
Everywhere I look for it it is at least 100
@Hector Plasmic The pull through V is to sharpen. By stripping the metal off you achieve a sharp blade.
"Literally beat the tar out of it"?
This implies that the knife is made with a gooey tar centre, and that you were so rough on it during testing that it oozed from its core.
Hi Damian... I don't have a SOG Jungle canopy knife.. should I?
OMG DUDE NEVER SHAVE YOUR ARM WITH A 6 INCH BLADE DO YOU NOT HAVE ANY KNIFE SAFETY 😟😳
Are you 6?
i am 16 what about you ?
Jokes 10 your new to knives aren’t you?
Jokes 10 I do that with razor sharp knives all the time. Your speaking as if my life is endangered. Every time I drive, I’m at more risk than shaving my arm with a knife. I’ve cut myself many times, I’ve seen my own flesh and muscle, tendons, and bone. I haven’t died since. I’ve cleaned the wound and stitched it.
recently bought it, showed my friend and he loved it so much he got one too. 5/5
90% of the reviews on this channel is bear grylls crap.
Are you his cousin?
I have most of Bear Grills Camping equipment. Very well made, maybe a bit over priced. All his stuff is quite all what you will need.
+Kalpesh Patel but don't get his 72 hour survival
I think the first version was a bit of a mistake, half serrated blade? 3/4 tang? Easily damaged stone? I bought the ultimate pro, and i've yet to fault it. The only things i've changed are,i polished the blade, shined up real nice, the black finish looked terrible after using to baton wood. And, the whistle cord, put that onto fire steel, and secured with some hair bands(don't tell wife lol) to the sheath. Can't lose it now. Received a few compliments about how it looks, overall very happy with it. Difference between the first version and this is like night and day. Buy one.👍
Spend your money on a mora
thorin dyer maybe if it was full tang
+thorin dyer if they did that they would have to give up misusing a knife as an axe/machete like i see in every video posted on youtube. or in this idiots case, throwing it. this knife is aimed at the weekend warrior market, rather than serious outdoors folk who know the correct way to use a tool.
Doesn't matter who the market target is. If it works it works. Have only seen videos of the original failing. None for the pro. Cold steel and buck seem to have the most fail videos. I own some of both and they have never let me down

+7319dexter is it really a fail or just what you or they believe as a fail?
Thanks for stopping by!
this isnt "Ultimate Survival Tips" this is more or less "The Ultimate Hocking of Bear Grillis' Dirt Cheap and "You Get What You Pay For" Survival Type Tools"....you should really change the name of the channel....80% of the vids are this cheap ass chinese BG endorsed junk...great if you get paid to promo this crap, but dont act like this is a tips and prep channel....hell Gerber isnt even a good blade anymore....people should know that....when a company's name cant sell the product abd you have to celebrity endorse it to sell it you know theres a issue with the product (think Beats).....
"Bear" = Dirt cheap and commie= China. FAKE!!!!
*****
nothing but crap products.
Do any of you people actually give your time to show us any thing better? No so shut up
Survive101
You shut up.
Synapsis
I will check your channel out.
You don't happen to know what the edge angle is on it do you? It's been damn near impossible to find, and I'm trying to sharpen it on my workshop.
Bear Grylls? Isn't he the guy who got busted sleeping in motels and eating cheeseburgers when he was suppose to be sleepin' out in the woods eatin' raw lizards?
Yeah... he is a bitch made fake.
he never claims to be a hardcore survivalist and his show is more for enterainment than anything. In fact, les stroud has been exposed to have stayed less than 300 feet from a high way
888kermit
Bear is a shill and a fake, rumors of Les are still rumors.
Just because he hasn't commented on the fact doesn't mean it's not true. I mean have you seen the blogs of people finding his supposed survial sites?
draconIs Read Bear Grylls' article on Wikipedia. It's full of stuff that usually makes someone pretty hardcore.
Walmart... survival in America, I guess.
he was a sellout from the start my friend. less stroud all the way
he had to sell out, how else can he make money? Hes doing the right thing because sooner or later he will get too old or lose his fame.
Going from trusted survival expert to peddler of crap items you wouldn't even take camping with you is a long fall.
Kaisar Dragon Its not his fault they are shit, its Gerber's fault. The designs are pretty good but they are just made of crap steels and materials.
dude all i am saying is he jumped blindly into a deal with gerber notorious for recalls. why not make a deal with Buck or a more reputable company. i am a fan of gerber but the lately have been sucking balls.
What a long commercial.
Hey, Gerber paid good money for this commercial!
I own a Morakniv. Love it. Never had a Gerber knife before but I'll definitely try one. On my buy list next.
Did you get one? It's a damn good knife and it's very cheap right now
that knife it's a joke, like JGBLADES SAID, your probably been support $ by Gerber and Bear G. I never seen someone like this knife so much. worth fail on this knife its the loop for the belt
Goran G lol what kind of knife you have ? to be calling me hater???
He has to look at this from a neutral position.
Why is it a joke? Explain and tell everybody why.
p
He's a turd a carbon pollution mouth creates climate change not good for survive ful
