I received the Bear Gryles version with partially serrated blade like the Gerber as a gift years ago. I carried it for a year as well. I lost the fera rod early on before I learned to tie it on like you did. I contacted them about buying a replacement, they sent me one free of charge. The knife never failed to perform. It never rusted or broke in any way. I still have it but no longer carry it. I just hate partially serrated blades, always have. That's one thing I never cared for. Right where you do your fine carving on the blade. Good video.

Real ones remember the original Gerber Bear grylls knife that was grey and orange with a partially serrated edge. A bunch of reviewers and people griped saying that the partial serration was dumb and they came out with the ULTIMATE Bear grylls survival knife basically version 2, with the regular edge on it. Funny that they have apparently gone back to the original lol

I bought the Bear Grylls knife a few years ago and I have only one problem with it. - the sheath is reinforced with glass fiber and every time I withdrew the knife I lost the fine edge. Fortunately it has the diamond hone built in so I was able to put a sharp edge on it. I hope the new one doesn’t have glass fibers in the plastic sheath. I like having a diamond hone build into the sheath.

The main problem I had with Bear Grylls was that he used a military mission-centric viewpoint, where he would take some extra risks to complete the mission and there seemed to be some time pressure involved. I prefer the SurvivorMan approach, where you're just trying to get home and avoid any extra injuries. Much closer to civilian survival scenarios.

I carry one of the old Bear Grylls folding knives. There's the one that comes in the sheath and then I got the slightly smaller one which was called the scout before they came out with the small one with the black handle. I have been carrying the knife for 10 years or more and so many people say that the knives are junk because they don't like the name of the person on them but that's stupid because the knives are made by Gerber. Anyway I'm not quite sure of the steel because I don't buy anything at 7 CR except that I may have one or two knives that are made with that steel because I didn't know but I have been carrying this knife everyday and use it at least 10 times a week. I carry the Bear Grylls knife and now the Gerber shark belly can I use them every single day

The original BG knife had some problems and to be honest I don't remember what it was. Gerber saw this issue and redesigned the knife that fixed it. The sheath was also colored different to designate the new version. I bought the upgraded knife. The new sheath had a sharpener on the back and the ferro rod was located on the top of the sheath so it would be less likely to be lost. I have always liked Gerber knives.

Despite owning what are considered by most as better knives, I still take mine out on trips, it’s a pretty good compact and lightweight package, It offers me some peace of mind having it on my belt knowing I have a firesteel, a whistle and a sharpener with me when out and about in the woods.

I like the color on the new one, but I honestly don't like serrations unless it is a dedicated rope knife that is all serrated.

    • @martinhafner2201
      @martinhafner2201 Месяц назад

Serrations are fine if you want to make quick, rough, emergency cuts, such as during canoing or river rafting where wet rope is hard to cut. But if you're bushcrafting and want clean cuts, use a plain blade and baton the knife through the rope against a piece of wood.
That's how it was done on the old wooden ships. There is a class of knives call "rigging knives" to this day that are made for ship board rope work. Camillus still makes one and that's pretty much all of the Myerchin knives. There is a German brand called Bund that makes one similar to the old Camillus USA's Navy Marlinspike knife. Buck used to have the 315 Yachtsman that was almost identical to the Camillus USA rigging knife, because Camillus made it for them. That ended when Camillus went bankrupt and sold their name and patterns to Asia. I have very little use for serrations.

Yes. This knife has gotten so much grief because it has BG on it. That barrel full of broken knives at the Pathfinder School didn't help either. From what I understand the one made in the US is better, but who knows. I think it's a good knife as long as you know its limitations, like all knives. All knives break or fail if pushed beyond their limit. They look similar to another Gerber similar to the StrongArm. Great video, Brian.
The BG will probably become valuable since it's not made anymore along with its h8te. 😆😆😆

I prefer the orange Bear Grylls version over the green one for 2 simple reasons. 1 The BG is orange so if you drop it in the leaves it's easy to see. 2 the green version is serrated , in my opinion a serrated blade doesn't belong on a survival/woods knife. A serrated knife belongs in the kitchen.

I don’t wanna sound like a steel snob. The majority of the many knives I own are some form of 10 series carbon steel. I initially was unsure about 420 HC stainless. At some point I realize that buck also uses that steel. After going over some reviews, I started to change my opinion of 420 steel. The other Gerber knives the one you are reviewing I got as a gift is seven CR steel I don’t know if that’s even considered the low end of a budget steel but I haven’t heard great things about it being that said it feels solid in my hand so who am i to judge. I’m no metal or just I do have a basic understanding of the different types of steals.

Good old RUclips "let's make something out of nothing and bash someone who has skills far beyond our ken on his worst day to make ourselves feel better" stupidity. Heavens! A man making a TV show showing people survival skills didn't actually always "survive" during filming! He must be a fake. So the knife he helped design so everyone could have a decent knife for a decent price has to be fake as well. I don't know Bear Grills, but I have a feeling that if the only thing he had on him was his knife system and so did your average bear, and we threw them both into the wilderness almost anywhere in the world, that within 24 hours he would be smoothing it while your average bear would be curled into a fetal position crying for their mommy. Decent knife, good price. Thanks for showing it to us.

Dave Canterbury is fraudulent big guy. What he teaches is techniques designed for military and most of those techniques are designed for over seas. And his system could fail. He wants you to play Tarzan in the woods. You guys well, just about of you stress buying gear to save your life and then Canterbury saids not to carry it. I am former military so I see the techniques he’s using. Minimalistic gear to survive with, like downed pilots!!! Or military behind enemy lines. What you guys fail to realize you’re dealing with civilians not military. Civilians don’t have mental training we have and we have been trained to utilize our equipment and survive. But carry equipment based on the weather conditions is crucial, even you have said that. So why you disregard those items and go out and brave the wilderness without carrying enough water. He saids carry less of, when they make canteens with far larger capacities (also in stainless steel) a space blanket because he saw it on a tv military movie. What he needs to do is say if you want to go out and rough it, then rough it!! Then this is how you do it. But here in America there are critters that can make you deathly sick without the right gear. In some areas the tick population is very dense. He saids go out and cowboy sleep anyway protection. Go out without any type of enclosure and build a shelter instead!!!! That can put a person at serious risk if those materials aren’t available. Not having enough water to travel with when no other might not be available. Carrying a filter that can clog in an instant when they make better suited filters to filter water. Also believing that filter can remove pollution from any creek. When none of the backpacking filters can do that. Dave Canterbury is not that smart. Because that’s certain death out in the field for certain. Think about it??? If ya really want a strong space blanket then buy a S.O.L four season space blanket. Military pouches are not that big yet he can climb inside one which means he not that tall. In the rainy seasons in the desert over seas. We tried to make proper shelter with them and could not. When you buy an ultra light tarp that has no weight and make a better enclosure. Also there may not be trees to run a ridge line or make a lean-to!!! If you pay attention most thru hikers walk thru forest areas and most are burnt down. So his form of preparedness can get you killed quickly!!! All the other people on RUclips fake their excursions under fake temps and if extreme their cars are so close they run back to it and stay nice and warm and dry. Movie magic at its best!!! It’s because of your reviews and others that proves his system does not work in a real SHFT scenario. Those little backpacks can’t hold enough gear. Second when a real SHTF happens all those items become useless…, its the aftermath you have to deal with (if you survive it)

I'm sorry to me anything with BG name is way overrated. I've seen to many videos to where he was supposedly camping in the "BUSH" but ended up in a hotel that night but shows him coming out of a tent in the a.m. just not a believer my personal opinion only

@SurvivalOnPurpose correct sir but he was portraying to be a professional, should it matter if it's a TV show or not if you're saying your doing something you're not. No disrespect I love your channel but where I grew up it's still call a fib. Enjoy the rest of your weekend sir. Take care

Being a shill for Gerber really drops your credibility. Quoting Bible verses doesn’t help the credibility either. Maybe do more honest reviews. You might make less money, but you’ll still have your integrity.

Not sure how I am a shill for Gerber. They are just one of a wide variety of knives I review. Although I have liked most of the Gerber knives I have tested over the years. It sounds like you don’t like Gerber or the Bible and maybe that is influencing your opinion.

I find it interesting that someone reading a few lines from a book (that you apparently don't like or believe in) in a video about knives bothers you enough to motivate you to make a comment like this. Have you ever thought about that or asked yourself why it affects you that way?

G'day Bryan, I have known a few blokes like yourself that have been quite happy with the original BG. However, I did hang out for the Ultimate "Pro" version ...... a very significant upgrade !!!!
9Cr18Mov, which I have beat to within an inch of its life through Aussie Redgum, (btw with a big baton similar to your latest weapon), holds a good edge, no chipping, rolling, even the coating has held up.
Full tang to the pommel, (which is more useful than most in its design) ...... and yep the ergos really agree with me too.
Vastly superior sheath with excellent, no rattle, retention, well unless you shake the hell out of it without the retention strap engaged, ....... even then negligible, ..... I'm not sure why the strap is actually there to be honest ; ). Only real negative is the belt loop is a bit short, but will still do a 2 in. belt or pack strap.
The ferro rod is as good as, if not better, than any I have for it's size .... and is housed right way up this time.
The whistle is at least satisfactory and better than several others I've tried.
The sharpener is noth'n to write home about, though it does work "well enough" in a pinch.
Cant say I'm a fan of the orange, or any other flouro color for that matter, out in the bush, but quite right mate, ........ sure helps to not lose stuff .... and could potentially be the difference between life and death.
Anyway, I paid 70 knicker AUD, (around 40 USD), back in the day. I dont know of anywhere else, before or since, you get so much bang for buck as a package.
This latest iteration seems to be ok for what it is, though a few steps backwards.
    Cheers Duke.
P.S. Regardless of those that poo poo BG, ...... I reckon one must admit, you've only gotta look at what he did do on camera, (not to mention his history), to acknowledge he does know his stuff ........ and has done so much for survival awareness/education, .........
.... aint that many on the planet ........ that have done what he's done, .......so pull ya head in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
P.P.S if you dont know what "pull ya head in" means ........ google it.

@@michaelwaldeck7081 G'day Michael, thanks for the reply. Well I reckon you've got a coupla excellent options there mate. I assume the Strongarm is in the more common 420HC, though I seem to remember there was a BDZ version too ?
Mind you I do advocate testing in the backyard first, for any kit. Even the best of products can have flaws individually, as well as simply for familiarity. Besides, its a fun time, good opportunity to have a barbie, (BBQ, not the doll), while your at it IMO ; ) Cheers Duke.
