Damn. I wasn't expecting 99% of that. The 1% was "I've seen a cello before."
That's a cello?
A what now?
So you have never seen a black guy huh
Never seen a black guy?
I feel disgraced
How my throat got me feeling this spring.

I thought this was 7 minutes long, and I am now sad there was not more.
Look up the song Ka Bohleng. You’ll find a full version
@@Mattythebassist_ Thank you! That was dope.
@@Mattythebassist_ Do you know of any other works he performs in this style?
@@ZombieF14 go through his album “Where is Home?” Some of its more classical but you’ll find tons of great music which is similar to this.
Full video always in description!
I feel like this was taken from a _very_ specific context…
What you mean?
thinking rushad eggleston?
Anyone that plays that wild, surely does that all the time. It's not bad technique as far as a know. Just mad ass.
@@kknn523 Ass? What do you mean ass?
@@kknn523 I don't play cello, but I used to play the violin, and this guy's technique is amazing.
Those harmonics at the end 🤌
I thought nobody noticed! They were soooo clean
Yep. Classy.
I literally viscerally reacted to those it was so good
Fr 👌
Those left hand pizzicato are clean af
most of it weren´t actual left hand pizz but rahter just slamming your fingers on the finger board as hard as you can to procuc a sound. It´s slightly easier then the left hand pizz but impressive nonetheless
I have never seen someone play a cello like a guitar, but now I have and I'm here for it.
What makes this playing like a guitar?
@@jaredlancaster4137they are most likely referring to the aggressive hammer ons and offs. on cello it's actually a bit harder due to the string thickness and lack of frets. but its fun, trust me :)
@@caerulemusic yeah the left hand tapping and left hand picking is quite difficult on a cello. But that's not normal guitar playing either, so I'm kinda confused.
@@jaredlancaster4137I think they’re referring to the sound he’s making on the cello more than the playing in off itself
@@jaredlancaster4137 guitarists utilize hammer ons and offs all the time in 'normal' playing. not sure what you mean.
I saw him live in a piece written by him with full orchestra the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, it was transformative! Also had the whole audience singing along. A unique artist indeed!
Transformative ? lol
? @@jessecerasus9621
@@jessecerasus9621 Ha ha, right? So overly grandiose.
The way he blends so many different cultures into this piece is amazing.
I recommend listening to the entire thing if anyone hasn't already!
11/8 time signatures?? My music brain needs a breather plzzzz
Good thing il have no idea what going on
5.5/4 lol
In Africa we use all the time signatures
11 is 12 minus 1. It's basically that. Look at Blackened.
@@metodoinstinto Dude…12-1 is 11? Wow now I understand how to play this
I saw this guy live in Liverpool,UK with my dad, I didn't know what to expect, but it was so different and so immersive that he had the whole crowd in awe. He makes really inventive, narrative-like pieces. I really love the African influence infused with bluesy sounding classical!
"buT mOOooOM uhdonwannu play the cElLoOO!"
LOL this is so underrated
I absolutely love how his constantly changing facial expressions portray the feeling of every note
Abel Selalcoe is actually amazing though. Well worth finding some ensemble performances of his stuff.
Ooh I saw this guy in concert. Super cool, he has us sing along with him over the orchestra
i want MOAR
mood swings
been hooked on this track for weeks, thanks for doing a video on it!
Unreal!! Such talent. What a legend
wowwwwww
love this
totally unique
Should've done it in 11/8 with dotted bar lines
Such amazing blend of the voice and cello at the start 😍
Like George Collier, Abel has broken down the boundaries of possibilities for music making on the cello! So proud of Abel! Amandla to you and the musical youth of South Africa who will follow in you footsteps.
Respectuflly this is gold, TY for sharing this wonderful piece
Abel Selaocoe is absolutely amazing, I saw him live with a bass player and percussionist and it was one of the most professional performances or anything I’ve ever seen, he’s an incredible musician.
It’s so awesome seeing someone from my country South Africa on this channel!
Mindblowing, thanks for the discovery mate
Nice approach on the cello. ❤
how the fuck to do that sound on the instrument god damn just a master
As a violinist that left hand work on the plucking straight outta paganini
This is incredibly interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Love Abel!
I had the pleasure of seeing this guy perform with a group sometime in the last year, it was fantastic and so enjoyable
this man is an innovator
Is he a mongolian ? is it a guitar? is it a cello ? false! it's three at the same time
He’s South African. Met him after show. Wonderful man
Once again, George, I've said this many times.... I don't know where you find this dazzling content, but it is awesome. Thanks.
I saw him live in Belfast, at the Ulster Hall with the Ulster Orchestra. It was surreal
Holy shit what, this is so incredibly cool!
I actually like this, that guy is super talented!
absolutely excellent
me trying to sleep at 3am: DONT. JUST FUCKING DONT
that one neuron in my brain:
The time signatures alone would jack me up.
saw abel selacoe live recently. was very good.
that left hand pizz is CRISP
Let’s go, Abel is such a good musician and I’m glad he is getting some representation, and recognition.
Congratulations... I'm entranced by this sound and need to find more.
This unironically is my kind of music! Strange time signatures, African rhythms and textures, throat stinging and some konnakol (I think?) thrown in for good measure, all played on the cello! I'm heading over to his RUclips channel now.
What I find impressive is that he's making the pizzicato notes by tapping. It sounds as crisp as normal pizzicato, but nope, he's just ramming his fingers into the fingerboard.
As a technique it's pretty common in electric guitar (it's called finger tapping) but that's way easier on an amplified instrument. These cello strings are THICK and it takes some serious momentum to properly hammer them like this
I don't think I would've been able to guess that it was a cello being played if I only heard the audio. I would probably have guessed that there were several musicians playing different instruments. It's incredible that this guy can make such a full and fun sound on his own!
I love when cello players go crazy on that shit
There is nothing electronic about his performance and that was still metal as hell!!
Something about throat singing gets me every time.
as a cello beginner that is terrifying and inspiring at the same time
What I think is the most beautiful part about this piece is the fact that the cello is the only instrument whose range is the same as the human voice. This is a beautiful marriage of the abilities of the voice and instrument ❤
OK, this is rad as Hell. If I asked somebody what music they were into and they played me this, that'd be Immediate Best Friend potential. Like, "you're openminded with interesting taste and clearly aren't boring. Let's hang out."
Whoooop Abel!!🎉🥳 My South African brother there🇿🇦 played with him a few times in the MIAGI youth orchestra touring Europe. Amazing musician who came from humble beginnings!👏👏
I had the pleasure of seeing this guy perform live. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. If you ever get the chance, go see him perform, you won't regret it
That is one of the coolest riffs ever- and it just happens to be on cello. Wild.
I did not even know you could play a cello like that. That bar at 00:45 sounded so cool omg
That damn pizz line is one of the strongest earworms ive heard its so groovy
NAILED IT!
If you want a truly soul affirming experience, go see this man and his band live. It’s like going to church, regardless of whether you’re a believer or not, it’s absolutely beautiful.
That last note hit certain spot in my brain and i am on a small musical high
11/8 is easily my favourite odd time signature.
FINALLY! Abel Solace is an Incredible artist
Bro, this dude is AMAZING?!?!?!!!
In the beginning I wasn't sure, but I waited. I love it.
this dude decimated my 2023 spotify wrapped
Friend: What music do you like?
Me: *it’s complicated.*
What did I just watch?? That is amazing
Pretty accurate to be honest. This guy ROCKS!
Man plays the cello like a guitar
He is so talented I could never 😭😭
Those were some sounds!
Man that left hand pizz was really good
great video
THIS IS SO COOL
ohhh this was beautiful
Is this bonafided gave me chills! ❤
You ever just play a cello like a guitar?
Wow. Very cool!
Soo impressive 😮
Unless this has some greater context I don’t know about.
This is what I imagine too much music school sounds like.
Not sure if this is what would immediately come to mind if someone asked me what music I liked, but I definitely like this.
That is some crazy left hand pizzicato if I do say so myself
When your 22andMe comes back 1% Mongolian:
i was unaware one could play the cello like that
Him: Hi I came to audition.
Judges: Great! For what part?
Him: Hold my resume.
I see a few different techniques incorporated here. Interesting and creative way to use a classical instrument. I want to see this guy jam on a Japanese shamisen.
wow, didn’t expected that
This is awesome, as per usual!!
If you need an idea for the next song, would love Aimee McCarty's 2 Days into College song! ☺️☺️☺️✨✨✨
That was amazing
Marty that was very interesting music!
the facial expressions go hard
Yes yes yes and thank you!!
So much traditional african harmonic techniques used here. Interesting seeing it in European notation.
Homophonic parallelism,
Pedal note harmony,
Pentatonic parallel dyads,
Scalar source principle, ostinato
I’m more impressed that they are playing and singing at the same time. I’ve never been able to manage that. 😂
Selacoe actually absolutely rocks.
have you have ever had a dream when you think you can do anything?
the dream in question:
