- Many Alien and Human Creatures have tried their hardest to stop Gordon Freeman's path to salvation dead in its tracks. But there is one particularly enemy you probably missed on.

It should also be noted that this cannon, as well as the hanging lamps, and the military tech (including the tanks and grunt-operated rocket launchers in On A Rail), are all brush-based enemies, that is to say, made up of world geometry, which explains why they are all low-poly.
Thanks lymphoid for adding this precious extra info to this vid, a truly good contribution from a mapper fan like you!

You picked the wrong house fool!
As a huge Half-life fan who beat the game countless times, I TOTALLY forgot this turret ever existed. I would have never ever guessed even after you told the exact chapter. I never even knew how large it is as that place you find it in is spammed with vortigaunts so much I usually spam rocket launcher in that direction. I knew there is a turret but I never saw it up close. Didn't think that after so many years I could discover something new about the enemies but here we are...
Eheh yea its quite a forgerrable foe. I remember it because more often than not I get to that area low on HP and its always that thing killing me!
3:58 is when he gets to the point
Over halfway into the video for a clickbait title? That's fuckin criminal
You did some sick dodges against the beams of that cannon
It’s really too bad that we didn’t see more Xen industry. I really like how a lot of their stuff has the HR Giger biomechanical design where it appears to have been grown rather than built. It’s really unfortunate that Xen was rushed because we probably would’ve seen that weapon used more often, the maps would’ve been more polished, and we could’ve seen more hints about what kind of a society the Vortigaunts have. Luckily Black Mesa fixed some of these issues, but there were a few missteps (I really like how the factory area was turned into a proper Alien Grunt manufacturing plant, and how they had the Hivehands in an armory). Since Vortigaunts in the lore would do Antlion husbandry I’m sure you could recontextualize those thumper piston things into having the same functional the thumpers in HL2 did where they keep the Antlions away.
I’m sure if they had a few more months of development we probably would’ve had proper stealth and the sense of smell mechanic would’ve been fleshed out/properly implemented.
Never thought about a correlation between the thumper pistons in HL1 Xen and HL2 Highway17, but yea they definitely look similar.
And like you said, I think that these turrets could have fit the last room of Interloper well, it would have made the last map before the final boss feel like it was heavily guarded to not let Freeman reach the Nihilanth freely. It would have also broke the monotony of fighting Vorts/Alien Controllers and Grunts if you break the barrels
