There’s a great reason why Bujingai has music like that - Gackt is a guitarist, and I would not be surprised to find out that some of the music was played by him.
I remember going to a friend's house in the early 2000's, and seeing a Japanese rock poster on the wall. I told my friend "man, that chick on the poster would look a lot cuter if she had less makeup." He told me "uh, that's Gackt." Needless to say, that moment sent me on a decades long journey of Japanese music, perhaps only to avoid making that mistake again.
YEAAAAH SHINOBI! My 2nd favorite game ever! A game that feels so perfect when you learn it that I've put over 60 hours into it when the game is really only a couple hours long or even less when you don't get stuck. The soundtrack is also timeless. Like you said it wasn't very complicated or deep but it was so damn good at what it did. Great video. I'm definitely gonna check out gungrave.
Yeah, that's what brought me here too. lol I was able to beat it through to the last difficulty, but had to tap out around there. Easily one of the coolest, most stylistic games I've ever played and definitely one of my all time favs even if it made me want to punch my tv a few times. lmao!
I recently started using emulators and have been having so much fun. I got into video games pretty late, so I never got a chance to play the games of these generations. It seems like games back then were made to be fun or trying to be different than the competition. I understand the necessity of modern gaming companies business practices, but there's no denying that games of that decade were more entertaining. Thanks for the cool recommendations.
You are so right. Games from this time period (PS2 era) were real works of art and passion. It was a different time. Games now have lost much of that soul and personality.
@@dallinjc3 back in those days the only people who could be hired to make video games were people who were passionate about games. So they were always trying to actually make a good game. So glad I checked the list. Way of the Samurai 1 & 2 are critically obscured by the PS2's massive library. Sunk most of my time into 3, but still hold the former dear. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about them.
Had a lot of fun playing 1 and 2 on PS2 but only recently played 3 on PC and really fell in love. I actually had 4 too but couldn't get it to run, which is a shame because it looks absolutely crazy.
I've played every single WOTS series without realizing it that I already fell in love and only realizing it when I saw my crazy amount of playtime in 3 while doing killing Dojima for free sword upgrade runs. Truly, this series just special someone in my heart. Yeah, it isn't my favorite series ever (it belongs to MGS) but it always had a spot in my mind every time we had generation leap in gaming expecting a new game each time. Unfortunately, it's hard to see that we get anything past 4 at this point. Which is sad since 4, while drastically different than the rest, it still fun and perhaps the best in the series in terms of customization and contents.
I'd really love a modern day version. I know there are lots of samurai type games with Nioh and Tsushima etc. But I'm,talking a tidy version of that, way,of the samurai style
Some of these I've definitely seen talked about elsewhere, but Bujingai was one of my favorites and almost nobody talks about it. It had some crazy movement tech for the time. Very glad to see it again along with that clip of Samurai Western.
The Ghost Rider game also had a lot of great behind the scenes content, whenever I unlocked something like that I would watch them over and over again, I love seeing abandoned concepts for levels, the creative process of making the game. I never once encountered the save bug you mentioned. The key with the turns on the motorcycle is to anticipate the turns and start turning as you approach said turn.
Loved all these videos. The PS2 was the highpoint of gaming in terms of what was possible technically, before budgets ballooned out of proportions, so that everything had to become way more samey. The 7th generation (PS3 and 360) was a massive disappointment for me, with just some highlights. I miss all those fun and interesting 7/10s.
Thank you for introducing me to Gungrave. Tried OD and it was a mess, then i saw your video on it and it pretty much summarized my problems with the game perfectly. But now I'm hooked on the series and played through Gungrave like 4 times now and found out that you can move faster while shooting if you lock on and run at the same time.
So nice to see Bujingai getting some love, that was one of my favorite childhood games. I always wondered why it wasn't talked about as much, it still feels so good to play even now.
Now I feel like playing my PS2 so I can play these obscure library of games that I didn’t know of. These games look very awesome and I just wish I knew them earlier back then.
Yasuhiro Nightow has such a knack for worldbuilding and atmosphere that I feel has been largely forgotten in recent years. I desperately want to play Gungrave now given how much I adore the Trigun anime and manga.
Really great video dude i remember getting the Garo Armor on ff14 and thinking "damn this looks sick where is it from!?" brother told me and i really could not believe they was no game of it...turns out they was! just in Japanese only lol
I loved this video. Even though I didn't play any of these games, seeing these old graphics gave me a big dose of nostalgia. And while I've heard of some of these, some were totally new to me - like Gackt (sp?). Anyway, I think the only not-frequently-talked-about action game I ever played on PS2 was Rygar. But it's probably still fairly well-known in comparison. That game was so good, I think about it from time to time and want to play it again😭
During the berserk segment I was legit watching wondering why it sounded so familiar, thinking I remember watching a video where the person made the same exact comment you made about the moves he unlocks and the musou game locking the dismembering. I was thinking "did this guy commit plagiarism??" Then I realized it was your berserk video I was remembering....so uh, yeah great video, keep it up.
I remember having enjoyment with the Onimusha spin-off that made it just a DMClite combat game. I don't remember the name, just how it obliterated all the concept and prestige of Onimusha and was happy about it, but it was fun so I didn't mind. And the Dororo game. Very neat.
Onimusha never had such a spin off. The 4th game Dawn of Dreams (or Shin Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in Japan) was a departure but still far closer to Onimusha than anything like DMC. However Genji: Dawn of the Samurai was like a hybrid of both series, is it possible you're thinking of that or the ps3 sequel Days of the Blade? The sequel was that game that was endlessly mocked for having you fight a giant demon crab in what was touted as a historically accurate conflict
I rewatched this video just to realize that the Bujingai game is literally like a Wushu movie/manga but in video game form. The martial arts moves, the villain’s aesthetic, the “wire-Fu” movements, it’s all there.
Great video, loved learning about these games! I never knew there was a Garo video game - will definitely be sourcing and trying this, plus a few of the others :D Love your work!
Saw obscure ps2 action games and immediately knew Bunjingai would be on the list. Loved that game. Bought day one just based off the photos I saw of it. Always has a spot in my heart and have never met a single other soul who knows about it.
I have been searching for this games name for so long, thank you. I was a kid and I remember only that the guy your playing had allot of guns. Now I can finally play this game again :D
Your taste in hack and slash, action, shooter, third-person, fast pace games matches my tastes in games! I started loving these types of games when I first got my hands on Shinobi and Devil May Cry way back in the early 2000s. I've been hooked ever since! I might look at some of your list since I haven't heard of some of these like the Japanese ones. Golden Knight Garo, Berserk and Ghost Rider are the only ones I haven't played yet so I'll definitely try those games out later! This is an awesome list! I'm looking forward to the next part!
A game I really enjoyed that you might like is PS2 Van Helsing, the movie tie-in. The movie is pure fun and the game they did is just an honest to god DMC clone. If you like the general dark gothic/victorian werewolf hunter aesthetic the movie absolutely captured, I 100% recommend it. Don't expect anything super special but it's exactly that obscure 6.5-7/10 serviceable yet fun type of game. Another surprisingly good DMC clone on PS2 is Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge. Once again, a lot of people overlooked it because lol movie tie in.
I'm glad to see Garo being mentioned. I dream with the day tokusatsu gets big enough to get huge AAA games based on the IPs. The shows are fucking amazing!
One interesting thing to note is that GACKT himself is a very skilled martial artist in multiple styles. If I had to put a popular J-Rock star in a video game with a Chinese Wuxia-esque nature to it, it would be GACKT considering his experience.
THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT THAT GAME WITH THE GIANT GUN. I haven’t been able to find out what that game was my entire life. They would show it on G4 but stopped saying it’s name 😂
Berserk is Hack n' Slash gameplay peak, it never went better than this IMO. The feedbacks are SO SATISFYING, and the game really really sells how Guts is a battle monster, i really wish there where more games like it.
Played Both Gungrave Games, Bujingai, Blood Will Tell, Beserk, and Shinobi.... Golden Knight Garo seems Cool! I'll try it out sometimes... Keep these vids coming Cvit! Cheers!
One thing I always loved about shinobi is how they went all in with the over the top ninja stuff. Great game and you feel like an actual badass ninja. Don’t think I ever finished it as a kid have to see it if I can get a rom
Your channel has been a wellspring of games that I was positive at this point in my life were nothing but the fever dream fillings of my childhood that didn't exist. Thank you, genuinely.
I love emulation BECAUSE the PS2 was so amazing (I had just started college when it came out). This is why I love emulation, I can check out all these games I missed out or can’t afford used physical copies.
1:05:34 agreed. From what i remember Sekiro added a boss rush menu trought an update. I wished more games had that avaliable. The closest case aside form that is the kingdom hearts series but there only some bosses can be fought again with endgame stats.
I've played through Bujingai a couple times, I rented it from Blockbuster, and the aspects that are good about it left a lasting impression, even though it has its fair share of problems. So I had a soft spot for it and bought it years later to do a let's play of it. One thing I have to add about it that wasn't mentioned in the video is my single favorite thing about the game; it has a unique mechanic where the time remaining for you to keep your current combo alive only ticks down while you are on the ground. If you're jumping, air dashing, running on walls, your combo numbers won't get any closer to disappearing. The game gives you so many ways to keep yourself off the ground, and you can even stay airborne indefinitely above flat ground with appropriately timed sequences of air-dash - attack - repeat, that it presents you with the thought of "can I maintain my combo through the entire level if I don't take hits and have good movement". It turns the game into "the floor is lava".
It was so heartbreaking when I heard the guys who made the Ghostrider game *were planning on making a chainsaw-bike-like weapon, as what they had in DMC5, but simply didn’t have time for it.*
Shinobi was by no means or under the radar. It was pretty big at the time. I remember the controversy over the gore. It was a pretty popular game in my school..
During early-to-mid 2007, my oldest brother came back from serving in the Army and bought a PSP for me. It had three games: DBZ Shin Budokai, Prince of Persia: Rival Swords, and Ghost Rider. I loved DBZ and thought PoP was cool, but I kinda sucked at them (I was 6 at the time). But Ghost Rider clicked with me, and I loved the movie. I managed to make my way to the last few levels, but got stuck on some tough enemies that had the style rank bubble thing around them. My button mashing couldn't quite get there lol. Still had loads of fun with it though! The PSP version also had an exclusive racing minigame where you could choose from all the main characters and bosses in the game (including Johnny Blaze, Blade, and Carter Slade). It was possible to play online with other people, but I was too poor for internet at that time. About 7 or so years later, I picked up the PS2 version on Amazon and finished the game. While I no longer have that copy, I do have backed up versions on my modded PS2 and PSP. Lots of fond memories with that game.
8:19 hey man for that Bossfight, it wouldn’t surprise me that no one didn’t figure it out because it took me a long time to realize that it’s supposed to be like that every time he gets damage to the point he had a high in one of those pillars to recover. However once you realize that each time that he recovers, he can’t fully 100% recover from the previous times. To the point He can’t fully recover, and that’s when you take him out. I hopes that anyone reads this can understand what I’m saying and I hope that helps.
Idk if it's obscure enough but certainly underrated is the game Musashi Samurai Legend. I think it's worth a look, it was possibly my first action rpg game and one of my favorite games on PS2.
I became singularly obsessed w/ Shinobi at three different points in my 20s/30s. Completioned the hell out of it on all difficulties, and crave to play it even now. Not many games can do that to me.
I would like to shoutout the first Darksiders as a game where the finisher animations actually affect other enemies. I can't recall if the sequels did it too, nor do I remember it ever helping me out that much. But it's a detail I appreciate about that game
Omg i remember Bujingai bc my cousin had it and i watched him play it. I thought it was so weird but the combat was definitely ahead of its time. So sick.
As wild and bombastic as the Gungrave game itself was, its prequel anime is shockingly grounded and human, starting off as a tragic rise-and-fall mafia drama that literally gets devoured by anime madness in the end, like a very Japanese take on classic Western crime cinema. Very worth watching.
Your channel is like a time capsule of my childhood. It makes me feel so good
Even he's not safe from scam bots.
There’s a great reason why Bujingai has music like that - Gackt is a guitarist, and I would not be surprised to find out that some of the music was played by him.
The dude who did the music for bujingai didn't have to go that hard but he did for US
He was also a singer too. Crazy af. He even front manned for Malice Mizer.

1:05:34 agreed. From what i remember Sekiro added a boss rush menu trought an update. I wished more games had that avaliable. The closest case aside form that is the kingdom hearts series but there only some bosses can be fought again with endgame stats.
Thank you! I've been searching for the name of that game Shinobi for years. Some of the best days I remember were with my cousin playing Shinobi
I came because of Garo and stayed for the interesting list, keep going.
Oooooh, something to binge when on break.
Ps2 was the greatest console of all time and Chaos Legion will forever hold a spot in my heart as one of it's greatest games
I love my PS2. I have been trying to buy as much games as I can. I'm currently playing Zone of the enders 1 for the first time. Great game.
Firstly. Welcome back.
Secondly. Chaos Legion please, king.
Excellent video man can't wait to see Vol 2 .
Just started watching and u mentioned Gun Grave. Man I LOVE this game.
Gun grave was such a great game. The way to end the game made me feel like a boss back in middle school once I finally got there.
I love and appreciate this video, I did not know most of these games and now I will hunt for them
When I first saw gungrave I knew you were a man of culture 🤝🏽
Stretch Panic is an Action game I recommend, especially since it is one of the most bizarre video game experiences that I've ever had.
I hopes that anyone reads this can understand what I’m saying and I hope that helps.
i love how the coffin thingy grinds against the walls in gungrave
Nightshade; Struggle, period
Thanks for your Ninja Gaiden video to be part of my "gateway" into character action games.
I remember the last boss of Shinobi was a real hell but at the end you feel goood when u realise you beat one of the hardest games of the ps2 era
Came for the good ps2 hacknslasgh stayed for the good reviews and dinged the bell for the next volume
I would like to shoutout the first Darksiders as a game where the finisher animations actually affect other enemies. I can't recall if the sequels did it too, nor do I remember it ever helping me out that much. But it's a detail I appreciate about that game
Golden Knight Garo was a big surprise. The game looks so amazing!
God you only get better and better man good shit
Yoooo the Bujingai soundtrack 🤣🤣🤣 the song you picked brought me the fk back
Dope video! Surprised I didn’t see God Hand on here tho lol
Damn I played all of these, ps1 and 2 were all my childhood❤
1:17:23 That's extrinsic motivation, intrinsic would be satisfaction in having pulled it off and the action itself
Hell yeh~
I'm making a vid on Shinobi myself so it's super sick to see more people talk about it
Hope to see Summoner/Summoner 2 in the next videos, two of my faves.
The king returns.
