2 feet may be the recommendation, but this kind of screw-based support should be screwed into something solid, like the end of a rafter, so they also should be aligned to whatever you plan to screw into.
This is how all DIY tutorials should be done. Answered every question I had about this task. A little more complicated than I thought it would be, but definitely doable. Thank you so much!
Listened to other videos that just didn't cut the cake. This one was straight to the chase. Got to listen to someone who starts off with an F-Bomb meter.(absolutely brilliant!)
The only item that he didn't mention is that when assembling your downspout run. Make sure to put each place INTO the next piece working from the gutter to the ground. This allows for water to flow without any restriction or possibility of escaping at the join between each elbow / extension. As a professional contractor, I approve of this video!

Thank you so much for this awesome video. Just finished installing new gutters by watching this 7 minute video. You literally covered everything that was important to know. Love videos like this. Short, to the point, very educational. Keep up the awesome work! Thanks again!!
Definitely saved me at least 2 F Bombs. Great tips I never knew about the downspout insert and avoiding the joiners by cutting back the gutter and sliding the other one in. Brilliant ! Thanks
I'm a long time DIYer, and this video was fantastic! I put together a 37' long section of gutter using these methods and it worked like a charm - my son and I walked it up two ladders, screwed it in along our chalked line, and when we dumped a bucket of water in one end, it ran out clean in mere seconds! Thanks so much for this amazing video - glad I found it.
BTW, If my memory is correct from a project years back, you can hide that ugly cut edge on the overlap by sliding the cut edge inside the other section. You just have to be aware of getting the overlap with the direction of water flow. But this is a great tip for those who have not tried this, gutter is much more stable without the crappy factory connector. Save money on connectors and do it the way he shows.
My wife and I installed 36 feet of gutters using the methods taught in this video. It was just under $300 in material (including the Hoover Dam Leaf Guard (which was much needed for our yard). It took us 8 hours, because we had to work around our toddler's needs, but if you don't have little ones to tend to you could get through this type of project pretty quickly. This video was extremely helpful - thanks man!

I am a senior citizen and have done many things in my home including plumbing by watching these videos, however, even though this is a very straightforward and understandable method, I think I will have to give someone else the job, but I hope he does as good a job as you.
As a contractor, a couple of observations or additions to this well done concise video: 1) Don't use clear silicon. You can't see it and DIY's never wipe it completely clean in visible areas. In 6 months the result is silicon (in visible areas) full of dust and dirt that does not clean well, it only flakes off. Silicon also has a different sheen if you paint it that becomes very visible after ageing. Take the extra time to COMPLETELY wipe off silicon caulking in visible/paintable areas, you will be glad you did. 2) The type of hangers used here force the drip edge out too far when tucking gutter underneath (metal gutters only). Not really covered in this well-done concise video. I have had better success with ferrule type hangers. Everything lays flush when tucked under drip edge, although they are a bit harder to install. 3) Overlap and use grinder metal cut-off wheel just like video. I use my (10 y/o) $15 Harbor Freight grinder for everything. I get lots of laugh on my job sites at the things I use it on. I have notched 2x4's before. LOL. Be careful of heat and sparks, of course, it is an abrasive type tool. It is well worth it if you don't have one. Metal shears always leave artifact on corners etc. and should be filled down. 4) Galvanized self-tapping metal screws work excellent if you do not have rivet tool. This eliminates the pre drilling of holes..
Nice job! The first gutter installation video I've watched that a) didn't gloss over the cutting to length piece and b) suggested a tool that is not nearly as frustrating as a hacksaw and aviation snips! I like the idea of not using the slip joints. I'd rate it 10 of 10 for information and clarity. Thanks!
Excellent video. I am a retired EE and do a lot of repairs for myself and others, so I have watched many RUclips videos. This one covers all the important points of gutter installation, is easy to understand and has great camera presentation. I give it my highest rating.
You ARE the bomb. I need a length of gutter on one side of the house, where the peaks force rain to run off in one area, beating up on my lawn and creating craters after a heavy rain. Using a professional for what amounts to about 40 feet of gutter seems excessive, so your video is the perfect solution! Thanks to you, I KNOW I've got this.
WOW. Went into this thinking how good can it be at < 7 minutes. Well, pretty f-bomb'n good. Straight into it with no fluff. RUclips needs more to follow this model!

Another option for cutting the gutters is to rent a radial arm saw or chop saw. Whatever cutting method you use, be sure to lay out a tarp to make cleaning up easier at the end of the day (regardless of which cutting method you choose, the metal shards generated from cutting are razor sharp and can cause injury to people as well as pets).
Dude you saved the day! I had struggled half a day to get up one tiny section of gutter and was very close to tearing the whole thing down and calling the professionals in. Luckily I found your video though! The rest of the project went much smoother and with fewer F-bombs and WTF’s!? By the way, another of benefit of not using those gutter connectors is that there’s a lot fewer seems to seal. It really makes a huge difference both time- and caulk-wise.
I have watched several how to install gutter videos this morning and yours is by far the best. Using a cut off wheel sure beats a hack saw or Sawzall like I see on other videos. And overlapping at the splices seems much stronger than the little splice joints. Thanks for a great video!

Great Video, very imformative and simple to follow. I did the task with only one F Bomb... When cutting the top for the two pieces to fit together, YOU F bombed... You should cut the top to the gutter going towards the slope, so that the cut is INSIDE the gutter. You left the cut line on the outside and riveted together. I realized the mistake after I made the cut, so one gutter is kinda an eye sore and the other is perfect. I appreciate your video, I feel like a pro now.
Thanks for an extremely useful video. I have seen a lot of home improvement videos (a lot) and this one checks all the boxes--clean audio, listenable presenter, tight editing, no wasted time, and unique tips: I much prefer this joining technique to a slip seam. Also, useful to see rivets and self-tapping screws compared side-by-side. I will start sending other DIY RUclipsrs to this video as an example. (Maybe not, but conceptually.)

, great video for a simple easy way of doing this job,, no need to hire someone, watched it a couple times so as not to forget anything,, wish all DIY videos were this easy to follow.. thx
Saved just over $400 doing it on my own, but for the love of god this is NOT a solo job lol. I made the overlaps about 8 inches and put extra rivets into the joints to try and make it a bit more solid but man, there is no good 1 man way to do a 34' span 12 feet off the ground. WAY MORE F bombs then on your scale lol. I'm never doing this again solo, I'd say a span that long is like a 3 person job. Ended up rigging up a bunch of hooks and twine as pulleys so I could lift the Whole thing in one motion but damn, on the list of tools needed. I did notice that using the angle grinder to cut where it overlaps makes much cleaner joints then the snips made. And for anyone wondering, about 34 foot, 4 joints, 2 endcaps and the downspout sleeve insert and going back on the outside of the joints for good looks, I used just less then 1 whole tube of that sealant. If you dont have a hole saw, use the angle grinder to make a large X cut in the middle of the circle for the downspout, then you can peel back each triangle to cut it easier with the snips.
its not a one many job for someone that will only put up one piece on their house. For gutter guys like myself a 40 footer is a challenge but it will go on. We have tricks of the trade.
I imagine you guys have your ways, I'm just saying for the average homeowner DIY guy this is a 2 person job at least. I'm sure being 12 feet up was also part of my problem. It's like the guys that hang ceilings of drywall, if you have all the tools and the lift it's not too bad. Saw my old man do a 16 foot cathedral ceiling by himelf with nothing but 2x4's lol, there's always a way but damn, some of this stuff is a pain solo, just warning people in advance to save them the problems I had.
Anything over 8-10 feet (slightly longer than your extended arms total length) is more than a one man job but anything can be done if imaginative enough.
Chomp Roth 20 years of doing it and i do every house by myself! 70ft in one piece is easy! Take it in the middle with .032 material and walk it up! Gutters are super easy!
well done, explained in brief yet clear manner. I especially appreciated his recommendation of using lap joints rather than the available joint sections which as he pointed out are harder to seal.

Its 90 out today so I stopped to go in the house for a pop and RUclips, and there you were. I watched and learned about your joining method, so I tried it. At first I thought I cut it wrong but after joining it was correct. Nice to find an application for the pop rivets. Thanks. Glad I just re-watched, I would have cut that gutter piece, whoops!

And I loved the way you slide the pieces together instead of using a piece to steam together. You rock . The F bomb rating is freaking awesome yeah I love it also
I liked the video, it had good camera movement, and the audio was good to excellent. The video moved right along, I also liked the way you used your tools, showing how to cut the down spout holes and joining two gutters together. All in all a great video. Thanks
I love the rain barrel idea! I've been trying to figure out what to do about the rain pooling in a corner of my cemented, enclosed small patio. That barrel or some version of that look is going to be great!!
So glad I found your video. I was struggling with those silly connections for the gutters. Cutting one gutter then sliding them together was an awesome suggestion. Just wish I didn't paint the connections I already bought.
@@jackg9092 Seamless is the way to go, but not everyone has the $$$. A homeowner installed gutter system can last for decades if the homeowner uses quality materials (i.e., aluminum gutters, not vinyl), installs it correctly (how-to videos on YT) and maintains the system after it's installed.

Thanks for the tip on overlapping at the seams instead of using connectors....
, great video for a simple easy way of doing this job,, no need to hire someone, watched it a couple times so as not to forget anything,, wish all DIY videos were this easy to follow..
Much more fun working with a buddy. Expletives were numerous with my runs as well.
The best video on gutters installation I have seen so far.
You have the best gutter install video I've seen on RUclips. Even better than my go to channel for all my diy's.
Hey thanks to you we got some gutters up and collected a half a trashcan full of water just last night from one side of the roof, thanks so much!!
well done, explained in brief yet clear manner. I especially appreciated his recommendation of using lap joints rather than the available joint sections which as he pointed out are harder to seal.
You made that seem so easy. But i did see your f bomb shading. Lol😂 Thank you.
7 MINUTES seems like it will be kind of long until you watch this video and see it packs tons of helpful info and techniques in, & the video is actually fast-paced.Excellent, excellent video! Shows many great tips that make install easier & finished system much better. I have searched a wide spread of other videos trying to find the kinds of tips in here. No, I don't know this person :-) just sure appreciate what he's put together here!
The best video yet on doing gutters . Thanks it really helped.
When it comes to DYI I don't know my foot from a hole in the ground. This video was very helpful to me as my father-in-law needed some repairs on his gutter system. Following the install allowed me to troubleshoot his system and identify weak areas that were the cause of his leaks. Thanks for the information and keep up the good work!
The best rain gutter video I've found on the net. Great video! Thank you so much
Just the kind of info and delivery you need for intermediate DIY guys like me. Thanks!
wow. I really wish this had been the FIRST video I watched! feel way more prepared to tackle this project that's been sitting on my to-do list all year. thanks!
I LOVE the "f bomb rating" thing! :)
very easy instructions THANK YOU
Agree, best difficulty rating system ever.
Legion of Weirdos yes I agree.....lol
Agree on the rating system. And it seems to be accurate.
I was just trying to shove those connectors into one piece, pain. I am just running a 10 and 8' and downspout. This is for our deck that I have a corrugated roof over.
Ah man this is so helpful! So concise and straight forward. Living in SoCal and dealing with a house not equipped to handle rain I felt like this was directed towards me haha.
Thank you so much for giving me the confidence to tackle this job and save myself a thousand dollars!
Great video! So glad I came across it! Lots of great tips. We’ve done lots of home improvement projects over the last 40 yrs but this will be our first attempt at a gutter. After watching your video I’m confident we can get it done without a lot of “F’s”. LOL! Thanks very much!
short and to the point. very well done
Man the best video short as possible to the point and even flirting the extra details of the rivet gun and the snipers versus cutting it with your blade.
Thanks
I love the idea of overlapping the pieces. Years ago we did our own gutters and the slip joints were a pain and always leaked.
Good job, straight, clear and concise
Best gutter install explanation
The connector is anything but a connector! Great solution! Great video! :) thanks
Very good video describing the process, I especially like the way they join the gutter sections without couplers. Thank you
Great presentation! Alot of good common sense and a few alternatives that sound much better than
the usual methods. Thanks.
Tom Byrne
Thanks for taking the time Tom!
Best video I've seen on this. Just the right amount of info and great pace. Changing gutters this week.
I love the rain barrel idea! I've been trying to figure out what to do about the rain pooling in a corner of my cemented, enclosed small patio. That barrel or some version of that look is going to be great!!
excellent. Nice and quick instructions without a bunch of other fuss. Nice job.
Thanks for the great how-to. And I appreciate the comments as well. Looks like a manageable project and so valuable to a homeowner. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
So glad I found your video. I was struggling with those silly connections for the gutters. Cutting one gutter then sliding them together was an awesome suggestion. Just wish I didn't paint the connections I already bought.
The F-Bomb scale is fricken GENIUS! Less than 1 minute in and I already liked and subscribed.
Great video. Thank you very much. Hung 2- 17ft gutters without any major issues, saved myself a lot of money.
Great stuff! I bought a 10 foot section just to practice on before I go and buy 16 ft sections for my 12x30 Shed. Thanks.
Straight to the point, easy to understand, love your video. Thank you
174 down votes? And yet I see no one posted an expert explanation why he got it wrong!??! Great video, MrFixit!!
Best video on gutters I've found (I watched A LOT of them before starting my gutter project). Thank you!
The "f bomb" rating is useful heehee I had an estimate from a big box store this morning, diy will save at least $1400. Thank you, very clear directions and good tips about the connections. I will do it that way.
Very straight-forward and easy to comprehend instructions. Thank you!
Well done. Consise, well spoken, answers all the questions. Thanks.
Thanks for the information. I had this job to do on a 24 ft rain gutter and didn't like any of the flimsy factory connectors or the one piece downspouts. Doing the gutter connections and downspouts the way Aaron has shown nets you a better job at less cost. Excellent video.
Again, great job! A couple of things that you forgot to mention: The spacing of the hangers as well as making sure the water that comes down the downspouts is diverted away from the house in some way. Thanks again!
Great video. I liked how you described multiple joining options instead of just the best one. I was for some reason nervous about installing mine, but after watching your video, i feel it is more doable.
Wow 7 Minute video packed super full with some of the most valuable info!!
I pretty much agree with everything. The top guy said, except I’ve personally use more sealant at in cabs and sanded out create the best seal. Have never had a call back.
Thanks for the clear, non-rambling explanation! Looks like we could actually do this ourselves! Question… which is better, the vinyl or metal? Can they both be painted to match the house?
