It breaks my heart that puppy mills are even a thing. But I am so grateful there are people with a big heart willing to rescue these innocent animals that did not deserve the cruel treatment they received. They all deserve a second second chance at a loving home ❤.
They’re illegal in my state. Problem is that it also means ethical breeders got run out of the state as well. That didn’t stop people from buying dogs. The backyard breeders just moved to Craigslist and people who want purebreds just went to the next state.
My nephew & his wife rescued a West Highland terrier from a puppy mill. She is just the sweetest dog imaginable. She didn’t know how 1:33 to play with a toy but is learning “how to dog” from their other dog. We spent Christmas with them & what that sweet, sweet pup wanted more than anything was loving attention from humans. What a sweetie! Puppy mills make my stomach turn. Our humane society is overwhelmed by not only COVID dogs and cats but with 2 recent seizures of close to 200 dogs 'living' in horrific conditions.
I have a friend who fosters boxers. One of the dogs he adopted was a breeder for a puppy mill. She was scared to death of humans. She died about a year ago due to old age but at least she had a few good last years
We had a similar thing here. No idea how it happened/the context, but somebody dumped ~40 cats at the doors of one of the local animal shelters one night in February during a snowstorm. Thankfully most of them survived. Given that they were almost all orange, it was either an overwhelmed backyard breeder, or someone just hoarding cats and letting them be unfixed and breeding. The rescue that partners with the local car cafe worked for months rehabbing the poor cats, and most of them are staying to come through the cafe to get adopted!
My fur baby Suzi came from a puppy mill. She was in the discard pile with over 100 others. She was one of 28 that made it. I have nothing but fury about puppy mills. My other one came from a dog fighting ring. The cruelty of some knows no bounds. What a beautiful sweet fur baby. Yeti is very calm for all he has been through ❤
Being old, I decided to get a senior rescue dog, and as happens, I saw a Yorkie sixty miles or so away. It was one of those ‘That’s my dog!’ moments. I’ve always had sizable dogs, and having a teeny guy took adjustment, but he is a genuine champ! Only barks at strangers at or inside the door, spends his days an average of 18” away from me, and is loving without being nervous or clingy. I am very careful where I step, and check before I close an outside door, since getting shut out is distressing. I would strongly recommend senior dogs for senior people😢. Good in so many ways.
I’m disabled, & lost both my rescue 🐕sibs in the last couple years. They were 18 & 20. I don’t want another kitten, as I’m afraid it would outlive me, so I have thought about a senior rescue. Only trouble is, I can’t afford to do it right now, as vet care can be costly, especially for senior pets. I commend you for your rescuing a loving pet, & hope you have many years together. I wish I could do the same.✌🏻💕
@@joellepatry493 - my vet provides a substantial discount for us, as we are both seniors. Ask around. And some shelters will do the same thing in special cases. This issue needs addressing - no one needs a pet more than the many lonely seniors out here. I doubt we could mount a March forPets (all of us old), but a gofundus? Who knows?
A senior rescue would be great for me, Im very disabled and low energy....however, my husband is the opposite so our rescue is 2 years old now, we've had her since she was 15 weeks, quite large, eats as though food will disappear if it sits there more than 2 minutes and weighs nearly 40kg. I trained her intensively as a pup to not jump or mouth....Im on warfarin....and fortunately she is very good at switching between napping with mum and going nuts on the beach with dad. Given a chance her favourite thing to do is dig holes big enough to hide her entire self in lol.....she's a good girl though and only digs at the beach (when she was small our back lawn looked like the surface of the moon lol).
@@joellepatry493 - I agree that vet bills are a BIG problem, but my vet gives me a substantial discount as a senior with a senior pet. Perhaps there is such a program near you. @@heatherrowles9930 - sounds like a great choice. Love those furries (4-legged!)❤️ (I’ve seen the two-legged ones, but would rather not adopt them - too young🤭.)
A friend had an accidental litter of Border Collie/Queenslands. She went to great pains taking care of the pups and making sure their new owners had high standards of care. She sold four of five and kept her favorite. She sold them for $800 each because free dogs are often abused. She also had the new owners sign an agreement that; at any time, and for any reason, they no longer wanted the pup, they'd give it back to her. She also stayed in contact with the new owners as long as she could. One pup was returned, so she now has three dogs; momma and two of her boy pups.
I rescued a puppy mill puppy that was brought to an auction to give away. He was matted to the skin, you couldn't see his face because the hair covered his eyes and was black and matted to his mustache. (Shih tzu) His feet and legs were black and matted in poop. He had also vomited in the kennel. I grabbed him. I groomed him myself. Thanks to you❤. He's had 2 seizures and is blind. He's now on medicine and will be a forever dog in our home.
@carricowherd3826 , my old dog harley, had seizures due to a tumor in her head that was inoperable and (not cancer thankfully) but she lived 13 years despite that.
@@rachaelm3298 Very common for abused kids too, other adults tend to be very impressed with how quiet and "well-mannered" some types of abused kids are among strangers.

@@ES11777 Unless the penalty comes with a hefty multi year prison sentence it's not really illegal, for some people fines are just the cost of doing business.
@@SusanYeske701 I agree that the penalties for animal abuse are absurd and laughably low, they don’t discourage potential animal abusers, which is very sad and infuriating.
@@ES11777 ......you're closer to the truth than you realize. There are further details in the Bible about that heavenly government headed by the appointed King, Jesus. It's not just blind faith either. By reading the accounts recorded in the Bible, you see why he is the best choice to care for mankind: his earthly life demonstrated who he was. He fed thousands, he healed sicknesses and he even raised the dead, which no earthly government could ever do. So yes, God's Kingdom, which everyone prays for, and doesn't even realize it, (found at Matthew 6:9, 10), that government, headed by Jesus, IS the only hope, to solve ALL of mankind's problems......
My dog is a rescue from a puppy mill. I'm glad that he's well adjusted for a rescue dog, really seems to have just been neglected in his puppyhood so he has a long, happy social life ahead of him. The best part is that I got him because our local government shut the puppy mill down so I neither had to give the puppy mill money nor do I have to worry that that mill is still abusing dogs. The only bad part is that the perpetrators didn't go to jail - they were fined and aren't allowed to keep more than 2 dogs, but they'd already had that happen in another state so I do worry they'll head off to the next state and start again. I hope soon we can have a national animal cruelty register that stop people being repeat offenders and, frankly, put these POS in jail.
Putting a mandatory ten year prison sentence on puppy mill operators is the only way to really stop it. A lot of people consider fines as just part of the cost of doing business.
i love how you have dogs of all breeds as your own dogs. you just love dogs and have a home in your heart for all sizes, personalities, breeds and ages
I totally get how you described loving small dogs after only having larger dogs! I grew up only with larger dogs in the family (Collies, Setter, Samoyed). When my sister got a Chihuahua I asked "why would you get such an awful type of dog?" (I.E. yappy, barky, annoying...) Then....... she came to visit and I met her Long-haired Chihuahua. After ten days we fell in love! I will add that we had never had a pet in 23 years of marriage. Now we have had two Long-haired Chihuahuas for 7 & 11 years! Couldn't be more happy and love our sweet small dogs.
My boss used to groom this dog in Dunnville, Ontario!!! We made a Christmas calendar for her animals. I met him too, so funny to see him on here! Small world ❤️
They are banned here in the Netherlands but they do try to sell such puppies from mills in eastern europe. Like OL pretending they have a breed puppy that they can't keep and needs a new home, then they just scam people. You can still breed healthy breed dogs but they have strict laws on that, people who want to make money backyard breeding have dumped their dogs to when the laws get stricter. They also don't let you breed short nosed dogs (you can breed healthier versions of those dogs) or cats with health conditions.
cannot say enough great things about yorkies. I am owned by a 5 lb one & she rules the house. No one messes with mama. She's bashful to strangers & hates loud noises. She is smart, loving, funny, playful & so much more. I am proud to own a little yorkie. This sweet baby is such a sweetheart. He just stood there & let Vanessa do as she willed. I love these small dog vids, please show more. God BLESS the sanctuary who rescued this precious yorkie.
The look on Yeti's face when you went to shave his sanitary area was hysterical! His face clearly said "How dare you!". I loved it when Vanessa said he was like a cat hiding in the corner. At least he wasn't trying to climb the walls. 😹
We rescue/fostered a tiny 'little old man' teacup yorkie a few years ago. I was amazed at how well he fit in with our 2 crazy Aussie-mixes as he got healthier. We spent 4 months getting him well, then find him the perfect family with 2 other small furby's as siblings (a Maltese & another Yorkie). He was a lovely little gentleman with a huge personality, and did have some noticeably cat-like behaviors. It is great to see his tail, unouched.
They will unfortunately exist as long as uninformed customers buy from them. It is basic demand vs supply = profit. Anyone seeking a dog needs to research thoroughly (yes the onus is on you), be willing to drop "designer dog" dreams and exhaust all adoption possibilities before going the puppy route.
@@nanderson8286I believe that's partly what the "society" part meant. Like if the general public of dog owners doesn't know and care about stopping them, the demand and the supply will keep going

Breeders care about their dogs, their chosen breed and are usually members of their country’s breed standard club and they vet prospective puppy parents. (Breeders tend not to make a living from selling puppies, it’s often their passion rather than their job) Puppy millers don’t care about anything but making money.

Tibetan's are wonderful. We miss our Tibetan rescue who was with us for over 10 years but had to go to doggie heaven--the worst day of our lives.
Vanessa, you are such a kind soul. Even with your most difficult, you are always funny, kind, frank, and so light hearted. That speaks volumes about your character.
He's gorgeous. I went from a lifetime of Rottweiler ownership to a mini foxie cross breed. We had a moment at the local shelter and that was it. Love at first sight. I never thought I'd ever own a tiny dog.
Of course he's water repellent, his ancestors are from Yorkshire, it rains 355 days a year 😆🤣😆 Joking.... sort of. Love to the White Roses from a Red Rose ❤ Yeti is a beautiful good boy ❤
Your explanation on people owning small dogs is spot on. I’ve been looking into adopting soon, and people are surprised that I’m leaning more towards a chihuahua or another small breed. My mom owned a chi for 16 years and they joke that I “didn’t learn my lesson” but the irony is yes I did. She was a feisty ball of chaos and didn’t mind in the slightest, but that’s because we knew nothing but raising pit bulls that my dad rescued up until that point. We had to relearn how to raise and train a dog from scratch, and that involved making some mistakes. We had to learn she may be small, but she is mighty, and if you let her take an inch she would most certainly take mile after mile. And it’s from experiencing that first hand rather than just mimicking the motions of how my dad trained and raised pit bulls that made me truly love that personality, and learn how important it is to keep up with it. Not to say I don’t love pitties though - I adore those big babies and I would adopt one in a heart beat, but I know they are high energy dogs and I’m not living in a space where I can give them the activity that they need. Also, if another dog steals my heart, so be it, no matter their size or how familiar I am with them.
Also, I know some really awesome chihuahuas/chi mixes, (and little dogs in general,) it totally depends on whether you raise them like actual dogs, too many people baby their little dogs to the point that they're not like functional dogs. But yes, understanding how a particular breed and individual dogs tend to act is also huge. Good luck ❤

A friend and her husband were responsible Yorkie breeders. The pups had a large fenced yard to play in, they were regularly groomed, treated well, and the new owners had to provide proof the dog they bought was neutered or spayed. Every time it was time to sell pups the husband had a hard time letting them go.
I thought puppy mills just had them in cages and bred the females constantly, but omg the conditions she said they were in was HORRIBLE to hear!!! putting them in a pile like garbage?! how can you do that to any living being???? 💔
Cruel people who don't care and these same people are the ones that give people pause when it comes to purchasing from reputable breeders because people who don't know any better lump all breeders together.
Agreed - that was necessary but horrible to hear!! I want to know the truth, even when it is difficult. I'm just thankful that watching the adorable Yeti helped to soften the blow. What a precious boy!!! ❤
I am a big dog person, but I would take him any day. He was just so calm and quiet, yet inquisitive. Totally LOVED him! I am so happy they rescued him!
Often times there are, but more often than not they find a way to skirt around those laws. Even those they do break they can just pay their way out of. Many laws with tickets or fees attributed to them are laws for the poor and mere suggestions for the rich, after all.
I'm horrified at the treatment this adorable guy got at the puppy mill. I'm glad he's living his best life. I grew up with a Yorkie as my "littlest brother."
Can we get 'Hobo Haven' backed up by another group to deal with the puppy mill owners? Like maybe a Navy Seal Team, or in Canada maybe JTF 2, or if the mill is located in the U.K., how about the SAS? I was 12 when I fot my first dog, she was a yorkie...OMG the head on that girl. She acted like she was at least as big as a rottweiler. And when left alone the 1st time she litterly ate a chair. But she thought me a lot about dog. My 2nd was a chihuahua mix, sweet boy with a big ego and seperation anxiety. Loved him to the moon and back, for all his pain-assery 😅 I now have a chinese crested, first time I adopted an adult dog with challenges but again a lovebug, I swear all these small dogs make up for size by character😅

I also understand that there are programs for discounted services through some rescues. There are so many seniors perishing of loneliness who would thrive with a pet to love. Maybe a go fund us?💕💕💕🙏
@@heatherrowles9930 - sounds like a great choice.
Well done! Accidental litter or not that's the way a caring dog owner handles the puppies.
You are a sweetheart. Without you its doubtful this poor dog would have survived❤
@jenbreck3577 thank you. He's a joy.
@carricowherd3826 , my old dog harley, had seizures due to a tumor in her head that was inoperable and (not cancer thankfully) but she lived 13 years despite that.

Puppy mills should be illegal.
I’m glad good people rescued him.
Puppy mills ARE illegal, but people still do it, sadly.
@@ES11777 They're illegal in Ontario, not the rest of Canada.

He is so good natured. I am so thrilled he was saved. Have a great life little Yeti.❤
He is so cute! And the wordplay about the Glass Menagerie ❤
I was wondering if anyone else caught that. 👍
His little face when the clippers went for his southern hemisphere: "And just WHAT are you doing with that, my good madam?!" 😲😲
cannot say enough great things about yorkies.
What a wonderful temperament! He would be a fabulous fur friend
Puppy mills will last as long as they are permitted to by authorities and society 😢😢😢
Such a cutie! So glad your fundraising is going well. You’re an animal godsend.😁🙌👍👏
I could hear the anger in your voice as you tried to find the words to describe how this poor baby was treated, and I give you all the kudos for keeping an even keel as you described it because I most certainly couldn’t. He is so cute. How can breeders be so cruel?
Not "breeders". Puppy mills. There is a difference!
Breeders care about their dogs, their chosen breed and are usually members of their country’s breed standard club and they vet prospective puppy parents. (Breeders tend not to make a living from selling puppies, it’s often their passion rather than their job) Puppy millers don’t care about anything but making money.

my son and his wife adopted a Tibetan Spaniel from a breeding farm--caged, out to breed, back in the cage was his life. it's been almost two years and he is socialized after much patience, training and love.

What a sweetheart he is. I'm so happy he is finally in a loving and safe environment.
Chihuahuas are little shaking balls of love! ❤ my chihuahua is sassy and wonderful
Good luck ❤
Yeti is adorable.😊 What a sweet and precious fur baby.😊

I couldn't eat either if I was trapped in such an awful place! They need to be stopped with legislation making these places illegal with very stiff penalties (extended jail time) for those who ignore the law. Why doesn't this rescue place report these places?!!!
They can be reported (repeatedly), but the authorities do nothing.

Thank you for telling us about how the Happy's Place event went - no surprise that it turned out a record-breaker, with all your campaigning.
A friend and her husband were responsible Yorkie breeders. The pups had a large fenced yard to play in, they were regularly groomed, treated well, and the new owners had to provide proof the dog they bought was neutered or spayed. Every time it was time to sell pups the husband had a hard time letting them go.
What an ADORABLE little dog!!!! You did a GREAT JOB, AS USUAL!!!!
God bless you for all of the educational stuff 💞
How can anyone treat furbabies like that 😢😢
I thought puppy mills just had them in cages and bred the females constantly, but omg the conditions she said they were in was HORRIBLE to hear!!! putting them in a pile like garbage?! how can you do that to any living being????

how are there not animal cruelty laws against what you described at that puppy mill
There are in a lot of places.
Often times there are, but more often than not they find a way to skirt around those laws. Even those they do break they can just pay their way out of. Many laws with tickets or fees attributed to them are laws for the poor and mere suggestions for the rich, after all.
The ASPCA is trying to pass Goldie's Law to make these places illegal.
Contact your congressional representatives and ask them to pass this law.
