I'm currently planning on doing this to a 2015 Escape. Hoping to do most of the work with recycled materials. Thanks for sharing. Hello from Deland Florida everyone.........we got skeeters too.....LOL
Glad you liked it! I've actually got some more mods planned that I'll be sharing soon including adding a second battery, a roof ran, and redesigning the inside to make it more permanent with some fun tweaks so stay tuned for more!
It should be pretty similar then if it's a 2013. I'm thinking of altering my design a bit, somehow merging the two. Then adding a second battery and hitting the road for a bit!
This is awesome. Can you give me the dimensions for the first bed setup you showed? I have a 2014 escape that I want to do the same to. Please and thank you.
Thanks! This is honestly the best thing I've done to it. I nap in this thing daily at work and likely have a better afternoon than anyone else because of it!
Very interesting. Well done! I have a more basic 2014. I’m thinking about how to level the back without removing seats. (There’s that 2”- 3” offset from the back surface to the top of the back seats when folded down.) I wouldn’t be trying to store much. Just considering creating a level surface for sleeping if needed. Thanks for posting!
Thanks, glad you liked it! If you're not worried about storage, I would just do the same thing basically. Use 3/4" plywood for the main piece and cut strips like I did and just sandwich them together underneath in a couple places to bring the back up higher.
Im guessing the ply bed warped quite quickly? You want to support it where the majority of the weight will be not just at the ends, two more legs in the middle would've been perfect. Also your legs were shorter as the carpet has a little give with the underlay being spongy.
I have the 15 Ford escape titanium I'm trying to get an idea for a set up. Im a beginner overlander and curious what the dimensions were for your travel mode setup you have?
@@adventureswithcrohns9778 All good man! Looking forward to seeing it. Im ready to get my build started this summer. and hopefully begin using it next summer. thanks for all the information!!
The mattress I used is two pieces of 4" foam cut roughly at 41" x 32.5" to accommodate the second design. It could just as easily be 65" x 41" if you don't need it in half.
I guess it depends on everyone's situation to whether or not they can take them out. For me, with no kids, I don't think I even had this car home for 24 hours before I was taking those seats out!
I'm about 5'7" so that could be a bit short for 6'2". However, I don't slide the seats forward at all so doing that could give you the extra space you need. Then a little fold out strip of plywood hinged to the bed could fill the gap when the seats are forward.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Do you think you would do anything different if you were installing something like this but for 2 (crazy and big) dogs. My 2005 escape has seats that don’t bend over all the way down so they push on the seats and do anything to stick their heads out the window lol. It would be great if I could move the seats to the back for when I have passengers but doesn’t work like that so I’m trying to think of the best way to go about it. I would appreciate your thoughts if you or anyone else reads this! Thanks!
Are you wanting to camp in it also or is it just for the dogs? I guess it's different if you want to still be able to take more than one passenger. I honestly can't even remember how far my seats folded down. I knew from the start that I wouldn't need them and removed them the very first weekend I had it. Removing the seats definitely made building easier and provided way more storage options. If it's just for the dogs though, I'm not sure that I'm understanding the problem exactly.
@@adventureswithcrohns9778 Thanks for the response! I just want my dogs to be comfortable during rides to the park, vet, trips, etc. The way the seats are reclined now makes it hard for them to reach the window, but I actually found that in the 2005 escape I can remove the head rests and simply unhook the seat parts to make it completely flat in the back!
Hey man! Fellow albertan here looking to make a similar conversion on my 13 escape. Could I get more info from you on the dimensions of the platforms? Any tips/tricks from your 2020 summer of camping that you'd add on to the contents of this video? Cheers :)
Yeah, I can get that for you this weekend, just send me an email at rfinn1080@gmail.com. I definitely prefer the simple platform, it just has so much extra headspace. I took the bigger one with the drawers on a bike trip in the Rockies but found that I really wasn't using them as intended. Although on that trip I was focused on cycling and only converted the front half into my lounge space once. That one was intended more for longer road trips where I'm just focused on photography and wanted to have a comfortable place to sit and edit. I've been toying with the idea of making a new one that sort of combines the two, so basically just drawers that aren't so high. It would be designed specifically for my needs but could easily be modified. If I do that, I'll definitely do a video on building it. I also have a video planned for adding a second battery!
Thanks! With both sections of the mattress together it's roughly 65 x 42 inches and 4 inches thick. I got it from an old RV and cut it down to fit, very comfortable also!
I did consider that when building these but since they're pretty easy to get in and out, I decided just to deal with taking them out if I really needed to. The short one could be cut in half and a piano hinge added in the middle, that would allow for the back half to lift up and give access to the spare. With that said though, I do have plans to eventually take the spare out and use that cavity for storage and putting the spare on a rack up top...or perhaps installing a tire mount to the hatch (haven't checked into the possibility of that one yet).
I knew I wouldn't need the back seats at all so I took out all of the bolts out that were holding them in. Some of them were tough and I needed my big impact wrench, specifically the one for the seat belt that also has to come out. Some were also hard to locate. They can definitely go back in, probably just with a bit of help to hold them up as you get the bolts in. I stored the seats on the top shelf in my garage with all of the bolts together in a parts bag so they won't get lost, just in case I ever decide to actually put those seats back in.
Nice job. But i found out when working on vans way back in 70's that unless you level the frame of the vehicle using a level is useless in the interior
Yeah, all I did was park in my garage where it was relatively level. I just needed to raise the back so it didn't feel like I was sleeping on a slope. It may not be super accurate but it felt better!
@@adventureswithcrohns9778 Ya I've seen shelves hung level when the van was parked on slope. Funny nothing stayed where it was placed when we drove off
Hi mate, I know this is from last year so maybe you don't have anymore but if you happen to have the dimensions for the second version could I get them off you? I've got a 2013 Kuga (what they call the escape in Australia) and am looking to do something similar. If you do let me know and I'll shoot you a message with my email. Cheers.
Yea I can definitely still get that for ya! I currently have the shorter basic version in my car and the taller drawer, or "office" version as I call it, lives in my garage so I can lay it out and take a couple pics for you as well. I assume that's the one you're talking about?
@@adventureswithcrohns9778 wow that would be amazing! Yeah its the office version im interested in. Here's a temp throwaway email I created so I'm not publicly posting my email :) not that much is secret these days haha. Even if you just email it and ill email you back with my real email. Thanks a heap. firejag192@jentrix.com
Just folding the seats down might be considered "just a mattress in the boot". Taking them out and putting a frame in leans a little more toward a "conversion"...in my opinion! 😃
I just did a variation of this in my escape. This video was very helpful in figuring out my design! Thank you!
Very cool man...gonna copy you!!!
These are a great couple of setups. Just taking possession of an Escape in a couple days and looking forward to building a camping setup for it

Awesome thank you. Definitely gonna do this to my Ford escape. It’s one year older but that’s awesome.
Awesome video if you were cracking me up with the mosquitoes
Oh my god, they were soooo bad that day!!

I love this clever, simple mod. I’d like to get the dimensions…
Just replied to your email!
How long is the first platform?
Could I have the dimensions for your first design with the base board with the legs?
Sorry for the late reply, if you're still interested, I have those dimensions.
Would this work for someone who is 6'2"? It looks awfully short.

Is it the same model like the european Ford Kuga?
How was it to take the seats out? Any video or tips? Thanks!
Can u please put the dimensions for the wood?
I'm doing an oil change on it today so I can do some measuring and get that added to the description.

About 5'7 and I could stretch out pretty good. This was without moving the front seats forward at all so that would gain you some extra space.
