This was one of my wife's favorite songs, it would put a smile on her face and make her happy every time she heard it. She couldn't really explain why, it's now one of my most favorite songs (sorry to my wife but not to many bands beat BB, Shinedown comes a very close second). Wife past last year, 43, bunch of stuff (painful) wrong with her, she fought it for ten years so she could see her daughter and son get to young (very young) adulthood. Honestly, there were days that RUclips and music that was special to her (like this song) was the only thing that got her through the day. I do miss her a lot (met her when she was 14 I was 15, we were 8 months away from 30 years together), figure that won't go away soon which is fine, I will just take the time to fully grieve, come to peace with it while I watch the two perfect kids she left behind for me continue with there lives. Yes absolutely I lost my son to Suicide 20 years ago and people think you should be over it but you start to have panic attacks when you realize he's not away on a business trip he's not on a skiing trip with his buddies and will be back soon. This is why I love Shinedown, they can go from badass heavy metal songs like Cut the Cord, to really heartfelt and deep songs like Trough the Ghost, Sound of Madness, Second Chance, and State of My Head. This band is so flexible and is just amazing at every type of genre of music that it enters. I don't care who leads the band, their songs are amazing!

This band helped me so mush after my wife passed away almost three years ago, and I was introduced to them from a guy used their music as a tribute to his wife who had also died.
Lost my wife in 2008 to a heroin o.d,for 10 yrs.i tried suicide over5000 times,that door wouldn't open,music got me through,clean on methadone for 3 yrs now,living by the day,at least I'm sober and sane

My friend Heather loved this song. She loved this song more then any other one of their songs. She died of a heroin overdose. We had used together alot and we grew up together. I luckily got away and clean but she wasn't so lucky. It's hard to listen to but also really easy to listen to at other moments. But that's just it.....
That's all it is..life... heroin, death, nostalgia, depression, sadness, happiness, shinedown, love, death.....it's all just a series of moments. And those moments turn into memories.
How is it possible a song can make you happy and sad at the same time. I don't know but I love this band and how they make me feel even if it's sad. It's like a loved one giving you a big hug when your depressed. Anyway thanks for making this amazing song as well as all your other beautiful songs!

This song painfully evokes every thing that has happened to my marrage to the one and only person i ever unconditionally loved ,my wife,my best friend,my,lover and companion ,family..,my everything in this world. I watched her walk out if my life due to oeople that were very close ..oeople whom you would absolutely trust.. but to no aval have painted the most grusome and unrealistic web of lies that would make an angel cry...the out come was deliberate and swift. I have been living throught the ghost for the last 3 years. Its the most painfully bewilderedering wasted 3 years of my non existant life. I can not make it through the first moment the lyrics start without completely breaking down.. what an INCREADABLE SONG AND SO INCREDIBLY DILERVED. AMAZING!! AND SO HITS HOME AND HIT SO HARD. Ive been a fan from the start, ive been a musician for 30yrs and from the very first time i heard him sing i knew that he was very special,, in ways that i can't even explain, ive attended and played many many shows in thos 30 yrs and have seen the best of the best in the business but then i seen shinedown and i felt something that night that i had never felt before in my life and since 2005 ive attended 20 shinedown shows and the energy that his soul puts out is unexplainable, i have always tell folks that even if you dont know who shinedown is or ever heard their music , you should do yourself a favor and go... studios dont even come close to capturing the power of his voice... fast forwarding to the song atlas falls then go back to the beginning of the firstt album "" leave a whisper""" really listen to the lyrics of "" fly from the inside, i found a way to steel the sun from the sky and long live that that i decided to fly"" then the song ""somewhere beyond the sun"" shed some light is a song that he wrote about his father and he quoted that he was only about 5ft tall but when he walked into a room he was as tall as a mountain,, then the lyrics to the song, ""what a shame"" and the song ""unity"" then their is the song "" through the ghost"" and listen to thos lyrics closely , then the song " "devil" and the song "get up"" lyrics, i believe we can be whatever and i believe you can do much better , yeah trust me! then skip back to song ""atlas falls"" and listen to his words real closely,,, DONT GIVE UP NOW, THEIRS ALREADY SO MUCH AT STAKE, IF ATLAS FALLS ILL RISE UP AND CARRY US ALL AWAY! now tell me does it sound like he wrote this song about a pandemic,, or is he making us a promise of something that is coming that is so much bigger ???? Brent looks so good in this video, overcoming so many things we all face every day, I think this akbum spawned "Daylight". Beautiful.
We played at many, many veteran funerals. I also played it while we were inturing domestic abuse fatalities. Remember a veteran takes their lives far to often. In the forensic sciences, you see the end of a partner who didn't get away in time. Sometimes we're all there is to pick up the pieces. When you live in both of these worlds and see poverty everywhere, you know this song. Or you know the ethos of the song.

This is one of my songs on my cry list. I am actually working through the recent loss of my sister due to cancer. I am working on coming out of hiding away from the world. I am facing my pain and grief and doing the work. It is painful, but it is time.

@@allisonm4277 ik you wrote that over 3 years ago but im here to say that it was actually brent smith's interpretation of the song too. he wrote it for himself. when he sings about whoever "you" is, he is singing to himself. he was at a point of self-loathing and depression that each day when he looked at the mirror, he did not recognize who he was anymore, so he wrote the song to help with these feelings.
I’m glad I’m not the only person who applies these lyrics to himself. The entire chorus is the best depiction I can think of for the struggle that is fighting through the days when my past wants to rule my present in my head.
