True Lies was no hidden gem. Gem, yes. Hidden, no. It was always available at the local video stores when I was young and I knew lots of people who had played it. I rented it a few times myself. Loved it though I don't think I ever survived past the mall stage. THANK YOU for confirming to me that the Twisted Tales of Spike McFang was actually a real game, and not just a childhood hallucination from drinking too much Sunny D. I remember it was awesome, but could never remember what it was called! Def gonna look it up now.

Can definitely agree w/Dragon View! Played through it start to finish, and it's a game worth putting the time in.

I played Spanky's Quest... on the Gameboy. And because of system limitations, the balls that Spanky bounced off his head didn't transform into sporting equipment when you popped them, just featureless black spots which I assumed were nuts or something. I don't recall having to collect keys, because I remember it being more like Bubble Bobble, with you clearing each stage when you kill all the enemies. It was pretty good actually, all things considered, but I didn't even know another version of it existed.

I suspect how "hidden" these games are today is different from when I was a kid. Back then how main stream any content was dependent on how many copies were available at our video rental store. Which is why I was surprised to see Choplifter on this list. They even made a 3D PC version in 2012, no longer available on Steam.

Choplifter 3 is one of the most slept upon games ever! All my friends and I in the neighborhood had it in grade school and we spent many hours at all each other’s houses trying to beat it.... and I also still remember playing the original arcade game inside that “cockpit” style cabinet for hours upon hours as an even younger kid....

And any of us of a certain age named Kyle definitely remember Blackthorne....

Good list man, I love a lot of those games, especially Spike Fang (check out his SFC golf game, and a previous game released only on PC Engine that is actually very fun too!) A lot of these games I bought later in life as an adult, since I could emulate to try them and buy em on the bay or used stores if I liked enough- because you're right...as a kid I overlooked most of these games based on bad marketing/cover/magazine article etc.

I need to give Dragon View another go. Wasn’t a fan when it first came out; I was expecting a sequel to Drakkhen which, while not the best game, really hooked me for some reason. Also didn’t enjoy Blackthorne but I’d try it again too hearing your praise for it.

While I knew of the vast majority of these gems, I only played Blackthorne, Brainlord, and Dragonview to completion, and I played True Lies and UN Squadron during rentals from Blockbuster. Clearly my love of RPGs, puzzle elements, and games like Out of This World and Flashback were a huge factor in my choices. :) I'll have to try all the platformers someday though. I'm not as fond of that genre as I was in my youth, but these particular games look pretty fun for a playthrough.

UN Squadron was actually based off a manga, Area 88. There was a stream of sequels and some even on the GBA.
Nice list. Super Adventure Island 2 gave me many hours of enjoyment while I was younger.

Great to see Choplifter III and especially Phantom 2014 on the list. Those two were among some of my favourite games growing up. Phantom is criminally underrated which is a terrible shame considering how good it is.

Totally not kidding about UN Squadron. We had it when I was a kid but I never touched it because it looked like a flight sim and watching my dad play those I thought it would be crazy boring. Really missed out on that, cause I love shmups!

UN Squadron is pretty well known, but the rest of this list is really good, a lot of games I didn't even know existed (I would have been all over Super Adventure Island 2 & Dragon View). And I thought I knew the SNES library back to front.
