    One of the biggest drawbacks of modern mirrorless cameras is that they tend to look quite digital, and if you don't know what I mean by that, it's basically where your footage comes out too sharp, contrasty and clinical.
    Generally speaking, people prefer the more organic look of film, which has more subtle contrast and smoother highlight rolloff.
    So, this video goes through the methods I use to soften the footage with my Lumix S5ii/S5IIX and make it look more organic.
    The methods in this video will work with any brand of camera, so it doesn't matter if you shoot with Lumix or another brand.
    Thanks for watching!

    Do guys prefer the less contrasty, softer look? If so, what do you do to achieve that?

    • @orinorio1
      @orinorio1 8 месяцев назад +1

      Personally I never notice if someone is too sharp or contrasty. Always just think its the CC style. Every CC wants to have there own look and colour style.

      Film may looks softer but if you look at the kodak films you see that they are very contrasty

    Thanks for sharing dude! My favorite filter now is the Glimmerglass 1, way more subtle than a Pro Mist and a much more film-like subtle diffusion, love how it looks.

      I agree. I use GlimmerGlass 3 and a lot of my clients are loving the look. Only the Wedding Video companies don't like it too much inside churches as it's very bloomy for the highlights (I prefer it though haha)

    that's what I am actually working on, mist filters don't give the effect I want. lumix cameras produces quite sharp picture, s1h makes a bit softer look. But I am trying to take sharpness a bit, use bloom, film grain with some softness on it, and use a lighter log convert lut too not boost a contrast too much, but I still work on it. The big difference make as well, to use a manual lenses like canon fd, helios, vivitar, these make a softer look by itself and adds a bit of bloom and better rolloff as well.

    While i tend to focus on more low hanging fruit first in my productions (audio, talent, genuine and honest story / snappy edits and overlay) ...
    This is a pretty nice result - I would be lying if I said I haven't spent a ton of time trying to get skin tones looking great - and not always successfully.
    I find myself, in Final cut, pulling down highlights and boosting mids and pushing shadows down to try and get the exposure where I want it to be.
    This approach looks pretty legit- the resulting skin tone is undeniably great!

      A great question! Standard "black" diffusion has a slight negative impact due to it`s method of diffusion, our metallic diffusion (soft silver,soft gold, soft white etc) retain resolution & information so test have show an no real effect...we would love to see Josh test this though on his channel 😎

    I think film nitrate does not have the "profile" of the s5ii/s5iix. Unlike dehancer pro, which has the vlog profile of the s5iix/s5ii, it has halation & bloom options (so no mist filter is needed) and much more manual settings.

      In my opinion it is an excellent program. With the Halation & Bloom settings that the Dehancer Pro has, I don't even need a mist filter.
      (Note that using a mist filter in combination with low light conditions makes it difficult for the AF to work properly).

  • @remka2000
    @remka2000 8 месяцев назад

    Good tips. I found using a subtle bit of halation also helped to soften images and giving them a bit more of a filmic look. But I guess this might be more considered a grading thing?

      Halation looks very bad in my eyes. I dont want my colors destroyed with a red glow. I use the enhancer bloom effect instead but i always turn halation off.

    guys I need some help. recently, I picked up the super 35 anamorphic from sirui for my s5ii. I wanted to know how to remove the vignetting in the photo mode. I cant seem to find the option to switch to apsc for photo mode. And it isnt even letting me change the anamorphic de squeeze for photos. Am i stuck with this?

    I love the look of my old M42 lens collection adapted to modern cameras - however I absolutely dislike mist filters. They just look like my glasses are dirty :) Also: What's exactly the point filming in 4k 10bit with a 2.5k$ camera and a modern 2k$ super duper coated aspherical lens just to knock down the quality again with a 250$ mist filter anyway?

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 8 месяцев назад

      Same could be said about using an old M42 lenses that are full of imperfections, soft image and uncontrolled flaring.
      It’s a stylistic choice. You may not like it but it most definitely doesn’t look like a dirty lens… I mean the m42 lens is more likely to be dirty and full of fungus anyway haha
      Perhaps you should have a look at a 1/8 filter. It’s when people use filters above 1/4 on a zoomed lens where I agree it looks too much, but in a standard zoom range a 1/8 to 1/4 is nearly invisible and just helps take the edge off. Much like a super takumar or a Helios 43

      Those are 2 different things. Resolution is necessary especially on bigger screens. Detail and sharpening are also different.

      You can have a 6K sensor with no sharpening look absolutely amazing, such as these Panasonic cameras in RAW. The processing added by a lot of cameras in the internal codecs destroys a lot of that organic feeling.

    Why all of a sudden everybody is talking about sharpness on the Lumix S5ii? It’s perfectly on par with other brands if not better, want a soft cinema look? Buy a cinema camera, this one and many others are digital camera and for the price is wonderful, we better spend time creating content rather than focusing on softness or sharpness, the average viewer is not able to tell the difference, none of us is a Hollywood film director with a 2000$ camera

      There’s nothing wrong with being creative with our cameras “visually and aesthetically” it’s a personal choice, if one wants to do an artistic piece with filters/anamorphic or vintage lenses then again nothing wrong with that. We don’t need to waste money on buying a cinema camera nor want to be a Hollywood director. This is just an example as we have the “option” to choose (soft or sharp) when we want to or not. The average viewer won’t see the difference but some of us pixel peepers do😂

      @@rossomagicI understand what you say and I do like vintage lenses as well! What I don’t agree with the video,as you can also see in the description, is when he says that these cameras are too digital and sharp. Personally I don’t think Lumix is too digital and secondly this is a digital camera and is delivering what is meant to deliver. He makes it sound like a drawback or a downside,Instead of applying filters I would work with lighting!

    • @rossomagic

      @@S.visual I understand what you’re saying and I agree that lumix cameras are not as digital and sharp but everyone is entitled to their own opinions wether you agree with them or not.
      💯 on lighting, a soft diffusion would definitely take some of the digital edge off.
