From the looks of it, you have a 2024 Wired Freedom Gen I. This is essentially a beta version of the current dual battery 2024 Gen II version. The Achilles heal on the Gen I version is that if you go up steep hills for prolonged distances, this bike will overheat and consequently shutdown. I am disappointed that as of yet, Wired has not offered an upgrade path for the Gen I owners in the form of offering a drive train kit since the frame between the two versions is the same. My customer experience with Wired has been good so I would have expected more.

Good review Ruger. That skipping gears is a matter of adjustment. My sister's bike was having the same issue and she took it to an REI by her house they did an adjustment on her derailer and brakes for $30 and she said it shifts like butter now.

@@RugersLastResort My 2024 Freedom has skipped a tooth in 6th but mostly 7th gear when I'm on the peddle hard, from day one. It's not the derailer adjustment, because mine is adjusted correctly with perfect alignment. I think it's because there is not enough tooth contact for the chain to grab on that dinky little 7th gear sprocket. Also, at the same time in 7th there is less spring tension on the derailer arm spring compared to the larger lower gears. My friend Joe's freedom does the same exact thing. Not exactly sure what the fix is on that one? Maybe try and find a way to get more spring tension on that arm to help keep the chain planted on that gear a little better? I don't know..

A great, even handed review. I, too have noticed a slight drop in my voltage when fully charged. Didn't know it was a thing, since this is my first battery operated bike. Not gonna worry about it until it gets real. I get plenty of juice for my needs. My worry is the coming summer, when my garage turns into a toaster oven. I guess I'll have to bring the battery indoors to preserve it.
I put almost 1500 miles (!!) on mine since February. The bike is holding up like a tank in the most challenging rides in the desert. A true beast. So, no regrets at all. However, my next one is going to be an E Cell Dual Star which is a similar bike, with better components and dual batteries. Cheers!

Thanks. Yeah, depending on the summer heat, you could be better served by storing in the AC environment. I've kept plenty of LIPO's in my garage over summers with no degradation, but I wouldn't recommend doing that. My next bike will be 72 volts - brand, yet to be determined 😎 RUGER

Since I'm still waiting on delivery of the Freedom, when I saw the upgrades they did I got a little worried. I contacted Wired and they said I'd be getting the new one. The new one has bigger brakes 205mm 4 piston Gemma ( Gemma is a Taiwan company, I hear the brakes are good but finding parts stateside looks difficult so far). Bigger W motor (3200W / 153NM). Second battery (fits in rack 15AH). Balancer for 2 battery setup. Longer front fender (w/ 2 extra stays that bolt to the fork). Same headlight. New slimmer display w/ plain English programming. USB port is now on the button cluster. New 45A controller (now potted and fits on a metal bracket on the frame in usual place). That was about the gist of it. New weight with both batteries in, 105lbs. LOL. I was suppose to get this thing in late May, but could be June now, not sure. Forgot to ask if a Keurig machine might soon be a added accessory. 😁

Ruger, I've got cash in hand but am afraid to pull the trigger until I hear a little more about the frame. I saw a video of a guy who owned both the Ecells 5 star and the wired. He didn't have too much good to say about wired, but I'm taking a lot of what he said with a grain of salt. However, I did see the wired frame flexing upon certain conditions. Another video I saw showed the guy telling us about how wired is beefing up the piece that attaches the center shock to the frame. Have you heard of any updates on this subject?

From what I understand the stock chargers that get sent out with many PEV's aren't exactly perfect. Many of them "overcharge" and that can be damaging to the longevity of your battery. I'm sure what the exact voltage on your battery is supposed to be but if the charger is consistently going over that then it can degenerate the life of the battery quicker. Lots of folks spend money on "quick chargers" or a charger enhancer which will allow you to control the exact voltage that it will stop charging. There is also a way to open up the stock charger and locate a specific screw adjuster that will turn down the voltage slightly. A little company called "Pidzoom" makes charger enhancers and quick chargers. Sorry for the novel there I just wanted to share what I know. Thanks for another awesome video!

Hey Roger; great review. About the batteries: I heard somewhere that these types of batteries don't like to be stored while fully charged. I don't know what that means in scientific/electrical speak; however, that's what I usually do. I have a AZUB Ti-Fly X recumbent trike with a Shimano E6000 mid-drive at the bottom bracket. Where my batteries used to charge and post a full range state of 103 miles, now they are only posting a full range state of 98 miles. I heard it's best to store your batteries partially charged; not full or empty. So, maybe I've been destroying my batteries without knowing it? Don't know, but the capacity is definitely less.
Interesting commentary on selling price and which bike to purchase. When I first ordered my e-bike (first one ever), it was a Wired Freedom. The next day I saw the Ecells. Eventually I canceled my Wired order and purchased the Ecells 5 Star. Although the machines are nearly identical I thought the Ecell bike had better features and execution. Also, with the no tax and no shipping Ecells offered I was able to purchase a few minor upgrades (tires, torque sensor) and still saved over $300. You're correct though, both companies are dueling it out, and both have offered major upgrades to their products in the last few weeks. My 5 Stars should be here in a month. I'll let you know what I think of it. Take care; glad to see you are still getting it done out there. Stay safe, Brother. All the best.

Nice update. I'm still waiting for mine... hopefully this month! One question I have is what are the electric motor / gearing noise levels at roughly 20mph or so?
For me I decided on 60V primarily because I was unsure whether a hub motor's torque could handle going up some steep hills returning home while loaded with groceries. It was that or getting a mid-motor bike where a lower voltage wouldn't be a problem. That was my only real concern, I doubt I'll ever run the thing above 30mph or so anyway.
I'll probably take off the fenders when I get it, but we'll see. One big reason I decided on the Wired was that the rear rack looks very sturdy... one of my requirements since I'll be hanging panniers and carrying maybe 50 pounds in them.
I'll need to find a good charging solution. I have no need to charge the batteries to full, I figure 80% (63V) will be plenty. Even just 70% (61V). I suspect that the included chargers just charge them up to 100% every time but I don't know (can anyone tell me?).

For some reason looks is a bigger deal then it should be for me but I know the Ecells is the better move bike wise. Wired has been VERY helpful with troubleshooting but it's still not yet resolved for me. I hope we can get it back to working as it did at first. Regarding your concern about battery degradation: I'd suggest that you check the battery itself with a multimeter to see if it may be fully charged even though the display is indicating a lower voltage than the real voltage at the battery. All lithium batteries will degrade with use. Tesla tells you to charge only to 80% for daily use and rarely or never charge to 100%. If you routinely charge to 100%, you will prematurely age your battery. The dual Battery setup of the new Wired Bikes gives you more power from less voltage sag and so much range that it is easy to stay in the 80% to 20% Goldilocks zone for maximum battery life. I never charge my bike above 65 volts, my battery will last longer than I will.
