The way you did it is correct. I prefer my pedal freeplay to stop even with the brake pedal though.

Too much free play if even with brake pedal, 2 inch of free play /travel off the top of the clutch pedal is recommended by every manufacturer.

FLD LIFE means bump the starter, do not crank it over. Just bump the key, and check, and repeat.
