- The Bonanza F33A panel upgrade is DONE! It’s time we go for a first flight to learn about all the new upgrades and systems. We went with a full Dynon/Avidyne glass panel upgrade. In this first flight video we review the avionics and give our first impressions. Avidyne IFD550, IFD440, audio panel, twin Dynon 10 inch SV-HDX1100 displays, LED lights, digital fuel totalizers, and more! This was once the cheap old Bonanza, but not anymore!

I find it hard to believe how far general aviation has come. I soloed in a J3 Cub in 1961 and flew for a major airline for 25 years. I retired 30 years ago and we didn’t have anything that sophisticated back then. Amazing!!!
Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.

Beautiful job, Gentlemen! One of our local pilots mated an Avidyne unit with a Dynon screen in his C-177. A terrific combination at an equally terrific price point. The IFR workload relief and situational awareness is also a game changer for the GA world. Kudos, JR Aviation!
Dude, love your glass cockpit. It's so cool to take something dated and update it. That's what I love about planes - they get maintained well, you can have them for a long time, and enjoy them. Fun to watch you guys.

Awesome Panel , Awesome Airplane, I just installed a Garmin 430 on my old Debonair and I love it. Can only imagine if I could afford something like your Avidyne -Dynon upgrade I would probably go insane of happiness. Great Video guys !!

Your Beechcraft Bonanza (33) looks absolutely like a fly game with the glass screens in the dash of this plane plus I think the plane can be flying a lot more comfortable and a lot more accurate than with the old instruments with makes the plane even more safe than it already was. Great video; years ago, I was a launch (pre-cert) customer for the Avidyne IFD units, and they’re terrific. You couldn’t have made a better choice for your F33A panel than the Avidyne/Dynon combination!

I wouldn't fly any aircraft with outdated equipment if the money is not a issue your backup has backups 30 year old gauges won't work forever great job!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I had done Dynon in my Arrow. Everyone here in the East/Midwest said Dynon was a POS and they refused to install them or work on planes with Dynon. Now I have 2 G5’s 1 G275 a G355 GPS/COM and $45,000 less in my bank. To make things worse, I still have a vacuum pump. That is going away and being replaced by a backup alternator.
You guys did exactly what I tried to have done to my Arrow, and I could find no one willing to do it last year. There is an experimental in our future, and it will have Dynon.

Latest glass, many many functions and features to learn; 'to stay one step ahead.' Just quietly, I'd like a large half screen engine sensor gauges on takeoff.

Amazing glass cockpit!!! I'm looking at an older F33A and would love to upgrade to something like this. After flying a few with glass, its impossible to go back to just steam gauges lol.
Info overload fantastic to everything and the kitchen sink only thing missing is to have a storm you're trying to get around. I'd like to have new panel but my days are coming to slow down nice plane,

You guys transformed this plane. It has changed dramatically since you purchased it back when it was the flying banana.
As a car guy and someone that flys in sims i always find it funny how the aviation industry has nice all glass instruments but a aircooled engine with mechanical injection or even carburators that are very old. Especially the aviation would immensly benefit modern ECUs and Engine control. Efficiency, Resilience, longevity etc. As far as i know only Diamond Aircraft have adapted Car Engines.

Excellent mod for sure. Shame that dash hood is the original cracked, chipped pleather. Hope you can put that final touch on this awesome plane!
I really like you’re bringing things like carbon fiber from the performance / supercar world into projects like the Beech dash rebuild. Cirrus should take note - carbon fiber panel and other interior accents would be pretty sweet in modern, high performance aircraft.

Get the Dynon panel autopilot. I have one on in my RV-10. Makes the usability of the autopilot increase. 🇺🇸

I have a Dynon system in my Vans RV-8 and it's great however you should really fly with the Garmin G3X system before deciding to upgrade your other planes with Dynon avionics. If you come to Atlanta I can arrange it... The G3X is a far more intuitive and easy to use system.
Could put the”B” logo with name of aircraft on the blank spot on passenger side …. Would be a nice finishing touch ☺️

The onboard footage of the cockpit reminds me of like old aviation videos I'd watch from JustPlanes or something like that. The way you zoom into the avionics and have a pilot talk about it haha. Kinda nostalgic. I love the possibilities with this avionics package but I don't know if I could get over the terrible framerate of the Dynon PFD. The synthetic vision seems awful.
Great alternative to Gramin. Can you give details on how much you saved vs two G3x, GTN750, G5 standby, etc. and similar comparable Garmin products?

Wow, impressive. Looks like an excellent IFR trainer. What would be the Garmin equivalent? G3X touch? I'm sure probably twice as expensive.
Having only flown with dials and gauges it seems confusing however it would be a big 🚂 curve for me, but it’s nice to seen all the changes in the past 25 years. 😊
Yeah, for older pilots like me it would be information overload and too easy to get confused and make a mistake. Back when I was younger and flying more often I think it would be great!

Not a pilot so the " plane jargon " did not make a bunch of sense to me. However, the explanation of the installer made it comprehensible. I love these vids.
You guys should get a Twin Bonanza (J50 in particular cus supercharged)
If you push and hold the right knob on the Dynon HDX it will bring up the taxi map - no need to go into the menus like that

The panel is a great upgrade for the plane. A bit different from Garmin, but with lots of great features. Great choice for something new.

Any color on the cost differential going this route vs the Garmin equivalent? Also, how much weight did you end up taking out plane with this project?
I know nothing about aviation, I’m coming from your auto side (I’m local and want to buy your burgundy Boxster) but this is super interesting. So much information to keep straight when you fly, do the screens make it easier to keep straight or is it sometimes information overload?
It looks like there was room to leave at least a couple of critical Direct Read instruments in place. Not a big deal you have enough redundancy and power, it appears, to be able to be dependent on these. I would only make one comment all of my experience is with military aircraft where redundancy is King. He stated that the individual GPS antennas were dedicated to separate screams. Tapping off of each of them to feed both of the primary screens. Or all three, allows that if you have a failure in any of the system antennas. It would not affect any of the screens I'm not sure how you would create a system to flag you that it was suffering an antenna issue at that point. Just something I thought about when he was saying it.
Aircraft is to add an electronic ignition upgrade. That thing sounded just a tick rough on your run up.
Had to make same decision. Problem is the AP. Go this route and you are looking at a $30,000 Ap with stec. That’s what you need to get gfc500 capability. If it wasn’t for that, I’d have gone this route because the 550 is better than Garmin.
Need to clock up a lot of hours to make that panel cost effective.

how do you like the dynon system I had a issue where when my pitot would get water it would fully flip my altitude indicator and doing that in the clouds is not the best definitely got a pretty big scare
All the plane is missing to become an actual showpiece, is a stitched leather yoke.
Like those found in the new G36’s.
Nice panel, but all I could focus on was that GoPro 1 stuck to the windshield.
Is the Dynon flight display much better than the Avidyne Vantage then? I presume You went with another brand of display for a good reason?
Had no clue what all the instruments or instructions are about but it's satisfying just to look at all those buttons and touch screens! Just wondering when AI can be added....

Impressive! Plane looks great inside & out. One question - If (& hopefully never, ever) you lost engine power is there sufficient battery backup power to run all the electricals?

It's gorgeous inside and out. How much useful load did you gain with this installation? I did avionics installs back in the 1970s. No digital stuff back then, and, I always warned a pilot to expect something to fail in the first 200 hours on a new plane. After that things got better.

Is it worth it? That all depends on who is paying. I'm just happy it's not me. Seriously it all depends on your flying missions. It's some serious kit that will enable IFR flights & night flights.
Hopefully the darn thing doesn't have a spell check! 😂 But no matter how intuitive, I can imagine quite a learning curve

@JR Aviation was the panel aluminium with a carbon wrap? Looks great with a more satin finish. Not as much glare. Plane has come out fantastic. Congrats.
The Avidyne panel - Who needs Garmin? Garmin has been Gamin' us with their absurd, high margin pricing.
Doesn't Owen fly helicopters? You could rappel out to catch the commercial flight and TSA fun. It is the way to go even if some find it rappelling.
Now, only if you could LS swap engine
