3 Types of Suits: Off the Rack vs. Made to Measure vs. Bespoke

  • When you need a new suit, you have lots of different options these days. There are more brands to choose from than ever before. This is great, but it can be a little overwhelming.
I want to help you choose the best option for your needs and budget. For the typical gentleman, here’s what I would suggest:
First, try to find something that fits well off the rack. Assume it will need a little tailoring, as this is totally normal with suits. Set aside $50-100 for basic alterations, such as getting the pants hemmed, sleeves shortened and jacket taken in.
If you can’t find anything that fits well enough off the rack, consider going custom. For most guys, this means made-to-measure. If money isn’t an issue - and/or you’re willing and able to invest in a great suit that you’ll wear for years - bespoke is definitely the way to go.
Prioritize companies that have showrooms (or fit shops) near you. It’s much better to go get your measurements taken, in person and by a professional, than to submit your own measurements.
If you can’t find a local option, it’s time to go the online MTM route. Of all the companies I’ve tried out, my experience has been with Oliver Wicks and Black Lapel.
If I had to pick, I’d choose Oliver Wicks. But please understand that I’ve had a lot of time to dial in my measurements with them. Black Lapel did a great job on the first (and only) suit they made for me.

Working at Jos A Bank totally changed my view of menswear.
I always hated ties and dress pants, but after getting a custom (made to measure) suit I realized I just never bought the right clothes for my body.
Now I actually love wearing my suit, ties, vests, etc...
Now I’d say a made to measure is generally the best option, but some guys may need to go Rack for money or time reasons.
A bespoke could be great if you have the time, money, and need.

  • @liamfoley9614

I've had several bespoke suits (and jackets) made for me now and I can say that I would never go back to off the rack (never tried the made to measure experience) even though obviously the number of items I'll have will be smaller. When it comes to bespoke I really feel the difference in the shoulders, the fit there is perfect something that is almost impossible in off the rack and made to measure. Over the years I've maintained a very good relationship with my tailor and since his shop is a five minute walk from where I live I find myself dropping in to him quiet frequently to chat about materials, suit making and all sorts of things. This relationship and repeat custom also has its benefits when he lets me pay for a new suit in instalments.

Hey Brock! I’m 170cm and I belong to the “Modest ASIAN Man” community here. I recommend that you visit Singapore and try the clothes here!
Though it’s not easy, I believe you’d be able to find clothes that fit you easier than you would in the US, given that they are catering to the average sized asian man here. Even if the clothes don’t fit, they require minimal alteration. Some suits even fit pretty well off the rack and can be purchased for around $250 SGD (really good price tbh) or even as low as $150 during the Great Singapore Sale period.
Anyways, really appreciate your content - it’s informative and relevant as always :)
If you read this, have a great day ahead!

I have a number of nice suits but by far my most comfortable and best looking suit is my bespoke suit, simply because I chose the material and all the details (with some advice from an expert tailor at Harmony Tailor in Richmond UK) and in the long run it’s more cost effective because I wear it more often than the others. Thanks again and keep up the great videos and information. 👍

My papa had always traveled to Italy to get his bespoke suits made. He invested a lot of money on bespoke suits because it motivated him to keep in shape. 🤷‍♀️ Ofc when he reached his 70s they didn't fit as well, because he had hip replacement and his back naturally began slouching, but he really prided himself with those. 🤷‍♀️

It's so subtle, but your shoulders look more square in the bespoke suit, and in general your proportions look slightly more balanced. I've always admired the work of tailors, and if I was a man, I'm pretty sure I'd save up just for the experience of seeing one of these super knowledgeable tailors work on something that I'd be wearing. ❤️

Bespoke FTW! The best bang for buck bespoke is from small family tailors in Italy. You can get a bespoke 2 piece suit for around $1200-$1500. The trouble is travelling for measurements and two fittings. If you can go around your work schedule it's a great deal and with services like Airbnb it's even easier. Course you can get a beposke suit in the US but personally I like the Italian style better. Italian tailors also frequently visit NYC so it's worth looking.

Nice video, clear and informative. I have to say though, from a suit-related business owner's perspective, the bespoke suit would not be worth it at the full price. It's not awful, but for bespoke it should be better than that. There's too much pulling at the waist and the hip + shoulder proportions are not flattering. One of the reasons some people prefer the SS suit despite it fitting worse is the shoulders, which would benefit from slightly less sloping and a slight increase in width, which would allow for a nice trim silhouette in the waist without too unnatural a drop. On a related note, the armholes are also a bit too low/large, which forces the waist to go slim too quickly instead of a more natural taper (causing some of the pulling at the button), and give you a slightly blockier upper body and not as much definition. This blockiness makes you seem shorter. I'd also go a little bit wider on the lapels, just have it hit the halfway point, with some adjustment to the shoulder width this would not look out of place, and in fact give your shoulder more balance. To account for your size, I'd make the flaps a bit smaller also.

I’m an Italian guy from Milano 5.6” short. I don’t have to wear suits at work, I do it because I like it. I own one bespoke suit in charcoal, three made-to-measures (navy, beige, black), two off-the-rack altered but extremely comfortable because I only buy if hips, shoulder and jacket length are perfect (light grey, very light blue). Being Italian I’m lucky to have access to very high skilled tailors from Milan or Naples, so all alterations makes all my suits very close to the bespoke one. The hardest part for me is to find dress shirts that fit well because I’ve large shoulders for my height. Brock, you’re great. You dress just like an Italian who’s surrounded by fashion since birth! 😉

Just bought a MTM from Indochino. I was measured at the showroom and the in store experience was great. 3 weeks later and the jacket needs to be remade, and the pants altered in several areas. That said after the remake and alterations (which are included in the price) the suit fits great and I am pretty happy. I would buy again from Indochino now that my measurements are dialed in.

Last year I decide to have a bespoke suit made. I searched local tailors and found out the bespoke suit makers were just a made to measure. “We take your measurements and have it made in Hong Kong” -The cost was $3000.00-
I ended up just heading to HK and having several things made with little cost difference.

    • @CosmicPipe

Yes so true! For the many years it's been cheaper to fly to Honk Kong, stay 5 nights and have two awesome bespoke suits made than it is to buy two off the rack suits at Nordstrom or other similar department stores on the US west coast. For example, today, a round trip ticket and 4 star hotel for 5 nights in HK is only $850. Add in two Super 120 bespoke suits with 3 fittings at Sam's for $1,200. Your total cost is $2,000. In contrast, two super 120 Armani suits off the rack at Nordstrom cost $3,000 minimum. If you request tailoring, add another $120 per suite!!! Go to HK - You save $1000, add two bespoke suits to your wardrobe and take a world class vacation! It's a no brainer.

I appreciated your explanation, and while I realize that this is not the topic at hand, after viewing several suit-buying videos, I would have to conclude, if I'm honest, that the most important way to look good in a suit is to just be fit. Following your advice and the advice of other channels can certainly improve ones chances of looking good in a suit, but none of this trumps having an aesthetic frame to hang a suit upon.

You have to have the suit on while you go and have your suit tailored. You bring the suit to them and then they make you try it on so they can take your measures and if you have things you want done they will do it for you

Even if I wouldnt know which one picture is bespoke, I can see it.

Obviously Bespoke is superior, however it depends on your shape and budget. For me, I always need to get bespoke/tailor made because regular suits don't fit me. I'm 6'4, 57inch chest, 19 inch neck, 21inch biceps, 36.5inch Thigh and 24inch Calf. I've never found a suit off the rack that actually fits my shoulders or pants that fit my legs properly. I've gotten off the rack suits and gotten them adjusted so that they're the correct length, however they're always too baggy in some spots. If you're an average / slight bigger or smaller than average, buy off the rack and get it tailored, unless you specifically need a suit for your career (e.g. Banking, fashion or corporate).

One thing I’m noticing with all these suits, though least with the bespoke, of course, is that they all look a bit too tight to move comfortably in. This is somewhat generational, as people 35 or below right now - I notice - have the problem of buying or altering suits too tight in the chest and waist, thus ruining the drape and leading to them tugging at the jacket in various places whenever it’s buttoned (see video for examples of).
I think there’s an idea that a tight suit will be slimming or cut a better figure, but I would counter that the archetypal perfectly-tailored bespoke suit is probably Cary Grant’s Grey Kilgour from North by Northwest, and it is actually somewhat roomier in the trousers, with a longer, less tight fitting jacket than most would wear today. It looks incredible though, because it’s as slim as it can be without noticeably pulling anywhere, and of course, Cary Grant looks stylish in just about anything.
This is just an opinion of course, there are lots of different suit styles, but ultimately, I think, most men want a suit that looks as flattering as possible without announcing the wearer’s vanity, which too tight suits have a tendency to do.

I recently tried a Canali OTR jacket and it fit me and looked better than any MTM I've ever had, gave me pause. A lot of it was the fit, it was just perfect, but it was also the material, there's a reason better fabrics are more expensive but they're worth splurging on.

Well done video....if your buying off the rack , look for the best arm hole fit . Get it altered by local tailor ,a good one will do a good tapper job on the pants ,add inner pockets . Find a good cleaner , that will not over heat your suit , press your pants just right .

The difference between off the rack, made to measure and bespoke depends on your build and the tailor. I am 5'10", 150 lbs, very close to off the rack 38. If you are 5'4" or 6'4", over weight or very muscular, the benefit of bespoke is very great. When a very good tailor alters my off the rack, they do very little. I gained weight a few times and not only did I get bigger, but every dimension did not grow proportionally. I do not go from a 38 to 40. I go from 38 with minor alterations to 40 with extensive alterations.

I've had a great experience with Sene Studio for a made-to-measure suit. It wasn't quite right when I got it in the mail but it was close...I sent them photos and a video and they actually remade a suit from scratch at no charge and it was PERFECT when I received it.

Don't know how I ended up here but it was an interesting and informative video. And I don't even wear suits anymore! 😀 I really don't like the way the bespoke suit pulls at the button. Really takes away from the look for me. Of course I have no idea how it feels but the MTM suit looks a lot better...

Also it is good to point out that when it comes to smaller and slim guys like you and me, made-to-measure is impossible to get the great fit and comfort.. Sure you can get really close to very good, but once you save up and try Bespoke once, it is hard to go back. Being short, slim and not having perfect shoulders and stance, gives us also very slim chances in succeding in MTM.

Unless one has a job where suits are worn daily, and on constant go from function to function, one might travel the bespoke route.
I've gone way of both off-the-rack as well as MTM and have not regretted either purchase. The suit's pattern makes my wearing experience all the more memorable.

I prefer separates myself. I wear a 34x34 pants and either a 46L or a 48L jacket depending on the cut and how hard I am hitting the weights. Last fall I bought a grey and dark blue separate combination from Macys. I tried some higher end suits at other stores, but bought what looked best on me.

The issue with the Lazio suit from Suitsupply is that it is cut for the most broad array of frames. If you're a guy who isn't very near average height and average/athletic build, Suitsupply will likely require serious adjustments before it fits you correctly.

As someone who runs a local made to measure company. Measurements are great but do not tell the whole story. We use fit samples based from some generic sizes that let us see things like poster issues and if there is a major difference between shoulders. Fit samples make it almost impossible to mess something up.

So here's where new value lies with Indochino. They have real showrooms now. I just moved and now live right next to one of their showrooms in Toronto. I went in there and you can choose all of your options from real fabrics and examples. Then they measure you, so it's not only more accurate and thorough, but also more of a bespoke experience. Then they had a deal on so all in it was only about $430 for a complete suit!

Love the video! Sad to hear your experience with SuitSupply but I can understand that it would hard to have an OTR with your build.
One thing I wanted to recommend tho would be to stick with Black Lapel as the American cut looks much better on you than the European cut of the OW. Also, consider getting only Full-Canvas as it would definitely conform much better to your body type. These aren’t personal gripes, just recommendations! Suits are supposed to compliment the silhouette and shape of the individual!
Again love the video, and keep it up!

I think off the rack/made to measure look just as good as a bespoke suit if you are fit weight and anywhere between 5'10-6'2ish. Could be just the way the sleeves and everything fit on a slim and tall frame that makes it hard to tell if a suit is cheap or not.

At 150usd you can have a Zara suit made in turkey with basically perfect proportions. Maybe it goes down to your body type, i have had great luck with off the rack suits.
Also, if you want to have best off the rack go with the unconstructed suits, constructed suits tend to have more tension if its not 100% for your body type.

I get shoulder divots with a lot of suits. Hugo Boss & Brooks Brothers don’t conform to me very well. Suit supply and Armani are about the only companies that have been able to furnish divot free suits. I just wish companies would make more soft shouldered suits with room around the lats in high end fabric. I love suit supply but I either have to cut weight or go custom.
I am 5’10, 180 lb, but I have very long arms and a very long torso.
