I saw this film in 1990 or 91 when it was re-released on a new print in San Francisco at a theater. It was an incredible experience, terrifying and sad. The men in the waiting room scenes, which of course at first you don't know why they are there, later you realize how many many face the same situation as Tony/Arthur, men who have found they are no happier in their new lives than in their old ones. I read quite a bit about Rock Hudson's reaction to playing this role was very traumatic for him, because as a closeted homosexual in Hollywood where he as seen as an icon he understood the pain of having secrets that he couldn't reveal to the world at that time, and playing this character hit very close to home. A sci-fi film that rises well above the genre in terms of what it says about our consumer culture that promises all kinds of happiness, for a price.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Murray Hamilton AND Will Geer, and with them in it, and the premise of this movie - a "mind trip"...............I may just have to buy the Bluray of this movie. Thank you Sir for informing me about a movie i never even heard of!!!!!!! so far - about 1/2 through your reaction - It looks like its worth 20-30 buck to buy. thank you Sir for educating me on this film! Just goes to show that there will always be discoveries for both of us, regardless of how many movies or TV shows we;ve scene. Or Radiodramas - which i discovered via the internet in the lat 90's, and discover more series of radio shows i never heard of and love, 25 yrs later. so yep 1000's of movie/TVshows and radiodramas - most are crap -90 percent - 8 precent are good, and 2 percent are gems! so that leaves hundreds of shows for discovery for all of us to find those gems. Thank God for The Internet Archive!!! God save the King from copyreich lawyers and record/movie suits that wish to kill the King and rob us of discovery of shows nearly a century old - just for "30 pieces of silver"
LOL Holy shit, so Rock and Murray are in the same movie! - so i was not seeing things afterall. This movie gives me "The Wickerman" vibes. if you have not seen, highly recommend (original with Ed Woodward of course). Woodward was great in one of the best movies of all time "Breaker Morant" and also fab in the TV late 60's early 70's TV Series "Callan" - one of the best TV shows of all time - FYI. RIP to Hamilton, Geer, and Woodward. ........damn what a mindfk, I thought i saw Hamilton, then I was doubting myself thinking i saw Rock and not Murray......................oh well, I except the mindfk and go along with the ride I guess. ;-).
Looking at the date movie was made. I know it's people acting but seems like I would like it to be 50s, 60d right now. Wasnt alive then so I don't know how close it is to reality but seems like an easier, comfortable time to live. Not to whine, but whole different life now.
What about a certain Maurice Binder who also done a series of films which also showed surreal opening titles dramatic Music normally at that time by John Barry but unlike seconds they films were hugely successfull
A brilliant picture that fires on all cylinders from the grossly underrated Frankenheimer. Hudson's best work, and astonishing camera work from James Wong Howe. Liked and subscribed because this is one of the more intelligent, astute reactor channels.
I agree with you about this being Hudson's best work, but I recommend the pictures he made with Douglas Sirk in the 1950s, especially "All that Heaven Allows," "Written on the Wind" and "The Tarnished Angels" (the last is an excellent adaptation of William Faulkner's *Pylon*). His one Academy Award nomination was for "Giant," which is also well worth watching. (If only for the "Sarge's Diner" sequence.)
my bad!!!!!!!!! he is not Murray Hamilton, but Rock Hudson, i saw his face and it looked like the guy i really like, but the voice was off - so did an IMDB. so not Murray, but Rock...............the movie still looks fab, so will have to seek other reviews..............and will probably buy the Bluray because i love a "mindfk" type film if well done.

Starting a new life as an artist, P-Magnet for all of those Company sponsored woman, personal Butler, 2 million dollar house overlooking Malibu Beach. WTF? Yes, a no brainer of sorts. Yet, would I want my old horrible life back? I suspect I would. A classic art film. Rock Hudson nailed it, perfect acting. A conundrum within an enigma.

My brother introduced me to this film about 15 years ago, when it was hard even to find a copy of it. I have long loved Frankenheimer, not for “The Manchurian Candidate,” but for the classic television drama, “The Comedian.” Did you notice that was Will Geer (Grandpa on the “The Waltons”) playing the CEO?
John Frankenheimer’s a hard-hitting director when he needs to be-Most come into Seconds after watching the original 1962 “The Manchurian Candidate”, a classic of Cold War paranoia. (The one with Frank Sinatra, not Denzel Washington.)
I love Angela Lansbury in that film. She was so deliciously evil. I wasn’t accustomed to seeing her do that kind of role. Then I saw her in “The World Of Henry Orient” with Peter Sellers, and she was kind of nasty in that one too. I think I once saw her on a ferry when I was traveling with my mother. We chose not to bother her though. She looked as if she was trying to be incognito (with dark sunglasses and not interacting with other people).

COOL! I have NEVER seen anyone review this film. I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid.
