I remember watching this when I was 13 or 14 like 100 times in a row. Its when HBO first came out and you got 2 movies that they played one after the other all day for weeks at a time until the next movies came out. LOL (I'm 64 now. ) Still like one of my favorites.

The effects are so poor (compared to, for example, Dr. Strangelove) because the US military refused to cooperate with the film.

Gosh this is still so adorable. 😭 As a tiny kid, I didn’t get some of the jokes like ‘Tresspassers William’. Some of it is funnier, like the drama of Eeyore giving Owl Piglet’s house and everyone being too polite to say so LOL. Or Pooh Bear’s single-minded selfishness. XD They really are like little kids. A baby doesn’t worry about feeding other people, just themselves. A young child might propose giving a fully occupied house to someone else. Why not?

There could be a lot of red in the film because Scorsese considers red a Catholic color. He uses right lighting a lot and in the Last Waltz he used red lighting in the song The Weight because he considered it a Catholic song

The Ending mirrors the ending in the source material; H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, (Pub. 1897). As for being anti-climatic - well. H.G. Wells faced a serious problem. Given the massive technological superiority of the Martians, Wells felt that Humans winning through Human ingenuity would only work because we, the readers, are Human otherwise it would be bluntly just silly / stupid. Wells apparently considered ending the story with the Martians winning. Then Wells came up with Earth bacteria killing the Martians. So the Humans "win" but Humanity gets a nice face kick in the ego.

It was accidental, not everyone is a spy. ;-) Shaw was not a General, the Medal of Honor bestows upon the wearer (even if only a private) the respect equivalent of the POTUS, but without the rank.

The whole point of the movie was the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. The actual fighting was secondary. What makes this movie so spectacular is actually the emotional investment elicited by these two wonderful actors, and the heart melting writing. The parts you didn't show were the best parts of the movie. You said you wanted to know more about Mr. Miyagi's background. The scene when he was reliving the heartbreaking loss of his wife and child was a pretty deep dive into his background. When Daniel bowed to Mr. Miyagi upon leaving was a clear sign that Daniel had begun to make the transition from kid to man, realizing that other people have much more devastating events in their lives than what he was going through. Detroit is a major car manufacturing city. I thought the performances by Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita were awesome. I guess if you were expecting a karate documentary, you'd be disappointed.

The way I like to look at the ending is how it is interpreted in the book where before the revelation of the Martians dying because they were immunocompromised was established, it was actually foreshadowed by mentioning how the Martians evolved to not worry about cancer and and deadly diseases, and using 2+2 logic like Martians are from Mars + no bacteria exists on a planet with no atmosphere, it makes sense that simple bacteria and microorganisms would take them down. Also I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook/ drama by Jeff wayne if you want an amazing scope of how insane the story gets as it follows the closest to the original story, even with the changes to fit his rock opera of the same name (yes there is a rock opera and I HIGHLY recommend if you like progressive rock, disco, and musicals)

I was 10 years old when this came out in theaters and probably watched it a year later on HBO. I was bored to death!!! (I was 11 years old.) I saw it over a decade later, after I had graduated from a Big Ten University (they were Big Ten grads in the film too.) And even though I am Gen X and they are Baby Boomers, I GOT IT! Absolutely was too young and didn't have the life experience at 11 years old. But by my mid-20s, I GOT IT! Now in my early 50s, it is still one of my favorite films.

I can recommend 1959's ON THE BEACH with Gregory Peck about the Cold War. Years before both DR STRANGELOVE and this film. BEACH is definitely a drama - a sad, sad one. It does have the most awful performance by Anthony Perkins the year before he took over (and owned!) the Norman Bates character in PSYCHO.

It’s interesting that the end notes that we are not gods. Because some people might claim that religion and laws, as the character says, is an attempt to play god and suppress our more aggressive natures. But this movie suggests that accepting our “id” is part of being able to control it, knowing that we alone aren’t necessarily enough to do that, but also that we never will fully be able to. Simply because we aren’t gods. I guess it’s interesting to connect the id to being a god, because it’s kind of both the opposite and the same? Getting rid of it entirely, or attempting to, like this guy or Dr. Jekyll. But then the id is very much like many gods in terms of being a force of nature. This doctor’s id was so powerful it was essentially indestructible, an uncontrollable deity. No wonder the Krell’s subconscious monsters destroyed millions of years of civilization in one night!

Since you appreciate this score (as one should), you might be interested in listening to one of the pieces that influenced this particular Horner score - in fact I believe he was quite consciously "quoting" from it (or to use a more elegant term, showing his reverence for it): the "Alpine Symphony" by Richard Strauss. As you commented several times on the impressive landscapes, I would add that the Alpine Symphony is a piece describing a walk In the Alps, including various sights, a glacier, a storm etc.

5:30 “I’m not gonna harm Sher Khan.” He is now! Mowgli’s revenge… JK. But it is funny how Sher Khan seems like the only proactive one around, almost everyone else is just insular and self-absorbed. Most of the animals could have helped Mowgli if they wanted to, but he wasn’t one of “them.” Instead, many tried to get things from him, like “fire,” entertainment, or dinner (Kaa). Mowgli’s lack of fear would have resulted in certain death multiple times if it weren’t for Bagheera and Balou. I think Kaa was just a hungry creep. XD Pretty crazy story lol.

I read this book back in middle school and it has remained my favorite book of all time since then. I liked the movie but not as much as the book. I've also watched the t.v. show but did not enjoy it and I've recently seen the musical on broadway and thought it was a great adaptation.

Ah, one of the only movies I've read the book with. Here in the UK growing up, I remember Cadbury's selling replica Wonka Bars with golden tickets to win £25,000 or something. I never really went out of my way to buy them. I doubt those sort of prizes anyways. Still a fantastic movie and a fantastic book. The Tim Burton remake on the other hand.... not so much. However, I did like how they updated the personalities of the kids to suit modern times.

Sammy, there are exceptions to the rule, but the rule is that remakes suck. The Denzel movie isn’t a bad movie, but it’s a pale, gutless movie compared to this masterpiece of a film. When Sinatra sees the Korean guy in Shaw’s apartment, this is the absolute first martial arts fight in the history of American cinema. When Sinatra put his hand through the table, he broke his hand, but without missing a beat, he kept fighting until the scene was finished. Sammy the plot re: Angela Lansbury’s character, I.e. senator Iselin’s wife is a bit hard to discern. Here is my take: she was involved in the plot from day 1, but she must have been told that Raymond would be the hero, but not also the pawn in their plans. This is why she was pissed. I really think Ms. Lansbury’s portrayal is of one of the most evil characters in cinema history.
