all are actors- David- Michael McKeon, was on the sitcom 'Laverne and Shirley' for 8 seasons before/during this, Nigel- Christopher Guest, is a writer, actor, director, producer- most known for his films- 'Best in Show' and 'A Mighty Wind' (which also star McKeon and Shearer). He's also the Baron of Hayden Guest/Lord Hayden Guest and he's been married to Jamie Lee Curtis since 1984. Derek- Harry Shearer, has been multiple voices on the Simpsons for the past 30+ years.

"Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?"
    "These go to eleven."
Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner is indeed Marty DiBergi.
What Script Fact: Although the scenarios were written in advance, much of the actual dialogue was ad-libbed.
Art Imitates Art Fact: Harry Potter Author J.K. Rowling cited the movie as inspiration for the unfortunate events that cause all Defence Against The Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts to leave the job before completing a full school year.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The actors are all competent musicians, so they co-wrote all the original songs and they're actually playing on the soundtrack. Although I found no charting information, Big Bottom (1984) specifically is considered a rock classic.
Historical Fact: Several rock stars have commented on what an uncannily accurate spoof of the rock and heavy metal world this film was. Ozzy Osbourne said when he first watched the film, he was the only person who WASN'T laughing; he thought it was all too real. "I didn't laugh, I wept. It was so close to the truth." noted U2 guitarist The Edge. Marillion had five drummers in the space of a year between their first two albums, which guitarist Steve Rothery later admitted was: "like Spinal Tap."

Yeah, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Chris Guest really are musicians and wrote and performed their own songs for this... and also did follow up albums and live appearances as the characters.

@@latenightswithsammy yeah in 1992, around the time of their Simpsons camep they put out Break Like the Wind... then in 2009 they put out Back From the Dead. They literally have to publish music and make public appearances every so often or they lose the rights due to some weird contractual b.s.

Everything in the movie is straight out of real rockumentaries, to the point that almost every real old-metal group thought they were the “true” targets of the satire.
Even the gag of “Famous director Marty DiBergi” (“Remember that dog-food commercial?”) is a swipe at Martin Scorsese directing several concert rockumentaries, including genre classic “The Last Waltz”.

To partially answer your question about scripted vs. ad libbed, I know the interview sections were not scripted. The band members knew their characters and their past, but didn't know what questions were coming. And of course that meant Reiner didn't know what answers were coming either. I've heard him say he had to really fight the urge to laugh during these parts.

    • @latenightswithsammy

With all their funny answers that sound outright hilarious, I could only imagine how much Rob had to fight to remain in character

the back stage catering was a play in Van Halen's demand that there be no green M&Ms in the bowl... this got a lot of attention, but Van Halen later revealed they did that to make sure the management actually read their rider.

David was also Lenny in Laverne and Shirley, a 70s TV American sitcom. He played guitar with a costar from that show in a band called Lenny and the Squigtones. Their songs got compiled into an album that’s available on RUclips.

    Actors or musicians? Both!
Without a doubt, they were the best, most successful, famous, and influential band to ever use the name Spın̈al Tap. The cover of Metallica’s Black Album was inspired by _Smell The Glove._ That’s the kind of admiration they garnered.

NO WAY?!? I could only imagine Metallica fans not having watched this film prior to getting the album and being slightly confused 😅

I’ve watched it many times and several times picked up new things. I missed the Fran Drescher line about “hard to believe you’re almost 40” the first two or three times. I also missed the “Spinal Pap” sign at the airport.
The dialog was ad-lobbed, the general theme known to the actors, but they immersed themselves in the characters for months and there was no dialog for the “script”. As a result, much of the dialog is subtly brilliant and other parts outrageously brilliant “Well, I'm sure I'd feel much worse if I weren't under such heavy sedation.”
Rob Reiner said he almost broke up laughing at Fred Willard’s (Lt Hookstraten) performance. Willard did that with no preparation and a short time schedule as he had existing commitments. But he saw some footage that had already been shot and said I’ve got to be part of this. Reiner said he broke character by breaking up laughing when Nigel revealed the name of the beautiful song as “Lick My Love Pump”. That’s from a documentary you can easily find on RUclips.

In Frank Zappa’s biography, Zappa, the author mentions how the fact that one of Frank’s albums had a beautiful instrumental piece on it that just happened to be titled “I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth” called to mind the whole “Lick My Love Pump” thing. I wonder if that’s what inspired that.

An old band of mine got lost on the way to the stage. Several of us realized at the same time and started doing the scene from the movie. LOL
This movie is a must watch for rock bands as part of training. 😁

I first saw this at my University when it came out and did not know it was a "mock-u-mentary" film. I was a big heavy metal fan at the time the band history is so similar to real bands that I made it pretty far into the movie before I figured it out.

This same trio made another “mockumentary”, but based on folk music. A Mighty Wind isn’t quite as funny, but still enjoyable. Like this, the songs are well executed and are actually fun to listen to.

Rob Reiner isn't a comedian- he started as an actor in comedy shows (All in the Family, one of the great sitcoms of all time)- following his father- legend, Carl Reiner. After he left All in the Family, Rob acted occasionally, but is most a director today- such great films as 'A Few Good Men', 'Misery', 'The Princess Bride', 'When Harry Met Sally', and 'Stand by Me'

If you enjoy rockumentaries, I’d suggest you try “All You Need Is Cash”, with Eric idle. It’s an intentional parody of The Beatles and Lennon’s favorite movie. He refused to return the videotape and soundtrack sent to him for his approval. ✌️

I watched another reaction channel- they didn't seem to know this was a comedy- they thought it was a real rock documentary. Yes- MOST of it was improvised.

That was a great reaction!!!!!! Loved it!!!! I don't think I've ever seen you laugh so hard! Rob Reiner is a good director with other good movies to react to, but this is actually more of a Christopher Guest (nigel) movie; he directed a series of movies like this, totally improvised ("Best In Show" is the best of them). Christopher Guest and the other two (Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, who does like half the voices on The Simpsons) were friends and had developed these characters. Brilliant movie, hilarious and so happy you liked it. So crazy you mentioned Monty Python because the only mock-rockumentary that precedes this is Eric Idle (from Monty Python) doing a parody of the Beatles called "The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash". But it helps to know The Beatles' story (and music) before you see it. But yeah, musicians love Spinal Tap, you are right about that, and yes, that's them really playing! They're known as comic actors but they all played instruments as well.

You have seen Christopher Guest (Nigel) previously in a film that you've watched on your channel, though only in a very small role.
He was the 1st customer to notice Audrey 2 in the window of the Plant Store in Little Shop of Horrors.
For more Improv film fun (also Starring much of this cast) I would suggest watching BEST IN SHOW (about dog shows) and A MIGHTY WIND (another musical "documentary", but surrounding Folk Music.

It's semi-scripted. They knew what had to be accomplished with each scene, but the dialog is mostly adlibbed. Some scenes are completely adlibbed; for example, in the scene where he's reading them the reviews, the band are hearing them for the first time. (The spacey girl from the opening sequence is one of a couple of shots from the original demo which made it into the final cut- Apparently, she was somebody's girlfriend from the crew)

    • @latenightswithsammy

WOW! This has to be one of the best "semi-improvised" film out there that just works in its unique structure ... can't think of many other films that do the same

  • @Grithron2
    @Grithron2 10 месяцев назад +1

Did he get the Jimmy Page references (the guitar demo and the violin abuse) or the Troggs reference (the rehearsal argument)? Probably not.
About the comment re All The Way Home. I felt sick hearing that! Sammy, I know your entire generation (and below) are dangerously mentally under-developed due to (even more-) abusive parenting, but, for goodness sakes, every 6 or 7 year old is-or-should-be, already steeped in the common language of songwriting! When I was that age I was making up my own mildly-nonsensical pseudo-Beatles songs.
[Normally I recommend people to react to The Rutles movie, but I feel like it would be wasted on this guy]

I appreciate your honest feedback. I do not hold myself above correction or scrutiny if I head into something I know rather little about, I think it's rather the point, and where fun/educating can meet hand in hand; the point is to learn, and gain an appreciation overtime through re-watches. If I knew the references beforehand, I'd enjoy the film, as is, I still enjoyed the film, and can learn about the references after the fact through this community. Additionally, I think this film is enjoyable whether or not the viewer fully understands all the references. There are a number of films I watch on this channel where I'm corrected via the community, constructively, and that, I very much appreciate 😀

One of my kids, at age six, wrote a song/poem that included the line, “the dying souls screamed for the halls of the brave”. To this day, I have no idea where she got it. It’s not like she was steeped in Norse mythology.
