I always thought the laugh of the guy who went mad was extremely disturbing. Thanks for reacting to this one, Sammy.
It is indeed! Thank you for tuning in :)
Congratulations on your 50th milestone the SWAN Lake theme music that played in Dracula and The Mummy is a tribute to King Louis II OF Bavaria the SWAN KING Blessings and HUGS 👑💜
In order to satisfy the public's appetite for the Mummy (1932)..Universal followed up with "The Mummy's Hand" (1940), The Mummy's Tomb (1942) , The Mummy's Ghost (1944) and The Mummy's Curse (1944). In these films he is called Kharis. 🙂
Sir Joseph didn't have to claim that Ralph Norton went crazy and have him put in a straitjacket to cover up about the mummy. Norton obviously went instantly insane upon seeing the mummy alive and Sir Joseph was not yet aware that the mummy was revived. He had no reason to believe that it was anything but stolen.
Glad you made it to this one. I first saw this around the mid 70s as a kid and it pretty much kick started my fascination with all things ancient Egypt. It has some fantastic visuals and Karloff is really great here. The mummy make-up still remains incredibly impressive after all this time. Lotta fun with this one ✌️
Totally agree! The make-up is fantastic!
I don't try to second guess a movie's goings on when I watch, I just let the story unfold. That way I can't be disappointed when I'm wrong. :) The story, basically though is Universal's Dracula retold with a mummy instead of the Count, really, with Edward Van Sloan playing a role very similar to his Van Helsing in Dracula and with David Manners once again being the love interest, as he was in Dracula. I believe it even had the same writer/adapter for film, John L. Balderston. I find Manners' acting somewhat wooden myself, and I wish they hadn't deleted the scenes Freund shot of Zita Johanne (Helen) in the flashbacks of her different re-incarnations through history. Other than that I've always found the film fairly enjoyable to watch.
Classic! I’m reading the Old Testament and so fascinating with the history and the ancient Kings and Jewish tribes, the traditions and burials in tombs and caves etc, , I haven’t seen this movie nearly as much as Frankenstein my favorite, one of my favorite Jonny Quest cartoon episodes involved the Mummy, cartoons were so good back then, anyway thanks Sammy good seeing you!
Thank you for tuning in :) Coincidentally, I'm also going through the Old Testament
Sammy still looked scared! Heehee. The Mummy is classic and still lots of fun to watch. :)
Indeed! :)
If you’re picturing the classic monster-movie image of the mummy in bandages zombie-shuffling after victims, that didn’t happen until later in the 40’s, when “Universal International” came back to their monster movies as B-movies…And, being B-movies, they’re not quite as good.
Still, at least that’s the more classic Mummy that Abbott & Costello run into.
Always great fun to watch your reactions, as you combine love of these old films with excellent film knowledge. I saw all these iconic monster movies on TV around age 7, when they ran on a Saturday midnight show in the early 1960s. My parents were huge film buffs and indulged my interest.
You are right, I think, This is the weakest of the famous monster movies, but I found it pretty scary at first viewing because mummies are real, whereas those other monsters are not. The gruesome wrapping and burial-scene killings were terrifying.
Thanks for tuning in :) And yes, that burial scene ... 😱
I appreciate how you watch these older movies. Because they are you could say the backbone of more movies then you think. On the audio commentaries for them with film historians they talk about. How the story plots are in some form still used in newer movies along with. Alot of filming techniques are still used but they are just easier to do today.
Like for example on the one for the Invisible Man they had the person in black velvet suit. To cover his skin then the filmed the background an put it over the black velvet. To make him look Invisible skip to today a person in a green suit. Then they put the background on the green suit to make them Invisible. So its the same filming techniques but its just easier to do today.
I would also recommend the Creature From The Black lagoon trilogy. Because it still holds up story wise an its the only universe (monster) movie. That only has 3 movies in that Franchise with no remakes or reboots. I put it like (monster) because on the audio commentary for that movie. The movie studio had one rule when it came to its name or titles. That being its not a monster its not a unthinking killing machine. Its a living creature with thoughts an feelings an emotions. So its to only be called creature or thing.
Indeed, so much to learn and admire from these pictures! Having a lot of fun with all the recommendations :)
The Mummy was not based on a novel such as Dracula, Frankenstein, or the Invisible Man. So the screenwriters took the screenplay of Dracula to use as a blueprint for this film. Dracula and the Mummy are both supernatural films. Frankenstein and the Invisible Man are science fiction. Maybe you prefer science fiction to supernatural.
I think you're right, I lean more towards the science fiction Monster films, perhaps the "grounded-ness" of the picture helps :)
I love that you are doing the classic Universals, I always liked the Mummy over Dracula or Frankenstein. If you haven't done it yet you simply must do Bride of Frankenstein, it's better than the original and best of the early Universal lot
Watched it :) Fantastic picture!
Hi Sammy
The cast of characters they find for all of these Classic Movies always amazes me. The remake with Tom Cruise was trash to me. You are on a roll Sammy !
Completely agree with you! Outstanding talents that completely embodied these characters! Having so much fun with these pictures 😆
Did you see the movie Tarzan and the great river?
Not yet :)
