Astra 1.6L Turbo LWC : Noisy Valve Cover Trouble - P0171

Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) is one of the earliest emission control systems fitted to engines. On naturally aspirated engines, they are a very simple system with very little to go wrong. However, forced induction engines have made the PCV system more complex. This complexity can lead to some common and noisy problems, as found in the Holden Astra 1.6L LWC engine and other similar turbocharged engines from other brands.
One of the most common problems seems to be the diaphragm in the pressure regulating valve splitting and will leak either boost or vacuum to the atmosphere. This situation may cause the following symptoms.
Loud whistling noise from the valve cover.
Rough idle
Stalling
Oil leaks
High idle speed
Engine light on
DTC P0171 - Fuel Trim Lean
Other airflow / boost related DTCs
Once you have completed your diagnostic check and concluded that the problem is in the PCV system the valve cover needs to be replaced as the PCV valve unit is not sold separately from the valve cover. Which is an expensive part.
This type of problem seems to occur in other modern turbocharged engines. In some VW and Audi vehicles that share the 2.0L TFSI engine, they use a similar PCV system, and when they fail, will make a similar noisy.
Luckily, the PCV components in these 2.0L TFSI engines do seem to be sold separately from the valve cover.
