Your retirement is so very, very different than mine. A big difference, you had a career. I had a job. My success at my job was much more unnoticed or lauded by anyone other than myself. My retirement has so far been over 4 years of feeling joyful and a sense of accomplishment.

Thanks so much for sharing. I know we have all gotten to this point having taken different paths. I’m looking forward to settling in and feeling joyful. I’ll get there for sure

I always say that no two years of retirement are the same. The key is to be open to change and ready to pivot at a moments notice!

I am on the fence about retiring, mainly because my career as a nurse practitioner gives so much meaning to my life. I still enjoy my interactions with patients and coworkers. I simply cannot imagine my life without that. I am blessed to have a job I am passionate about. I fear being isolated and turning into a grumpy old lady. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Thanks for your comment. I think I would have worked forever if I could. It’s such a wonderful thing to have a calling that you love.

Be patient with yourself. After a successful career and volunteering, retirement is such a drastic change! And then suddenly you turn a corner and are so very grateful not to be a part of any of that anymore…and can’t really even understand what was so great about it! 😂It took me about a year to adjust. I love my new life!!

We will make it! Big transitions are always tough but good days or blue days we will push through. It just doesn’t look the way we thought it would…..yet❤️

I totally understand where you are coming from. I retired seven years ago after a long career and there definitely was an adjustment and transition period. Life moves on and we eventually hit our stride. It’s lovely to look back, but also exciting to enjoy this phase of life. Your videos are wonderful, Laura. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us!

My husband retired 2 months ago and is lost. Feels like a failure. His doctor advised him to go to the gym. So that is what we're doing 3 days a week...its helping a bit. I enjoy your channel. Thanks!

I have really great days and some awful days mixed in with the ordinary days. When I can match up my “to do list” (expectations) with my accomplishments (actual things done), I feel fulfilled and successful. When they don’t match up, I begin to swirl into a gray space of discontent. I think we’re all so used to being busy and immersed in dealing with lots of people. Some days, retirement means you don’t see or talk to anyone for hours on end. In those hours, I try to kick myself in the butt and get busy with SOMETHING!

The father of Western philosophy, Socrates, is quoted as saying, “Falling down is not a failure. Failure comes when you stay where you have fallen.” Therefore, you are not a failure merely based on initial expectations of retirement. You found out that it is not your world anymore are still trying on outfits. Your purchase is in your future.

Having been made redundant and retired I too found it hard to find my centre . I started painting and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts. I’m working towards my first solo exhibition. The feeling of being centred and meaning is a daily battle. I worked very hard and worked purposefully for 30 years and now 64 and ‘retired’ since 56. Your comments resonates with me.

The village where my first house was had a beautiful old cemetery with some very unique headstones. Wasn't visible from the road. Used to walk there quite often.

Our family is in a very old cemetery I’m not 60 yet and my grandfather would be 142 years old being first settlers here in 🇨🇦it’s incredible seeing yours in ours the maples drape over the country road as you drive to it quite the spot as a young girl my mom would take us to picnic outside as she visited her mom and dads grave with a fresh spring the water she would collect brings back those memories ❤️You definitely have so many experiences with travel and careers you’ve had that you would be torn was it too early I think not your parents your pets your freedom to choose will be the rewarding part you’ll be surprised what will pop up and you’ll be thankful to not be tied down with as many responsibilities ! I felt like a failure to be retired as if screwing up the financial part having to retire being quite able to work but not medically right ,but my children and grandchildren have really benefited with my freedom and I feel good about helping them it’s taken quite a bit mentally but silently I got there ❤️Thanks Laura ❤️omg sorry such a long comment lol

Just recalled a house my Aunt had in NE Ohio had an old cemetery in the corner of her property. Very small. I think the earliest headstone dated in the 1780's or 90's.

How about being a mentor to younger people starting out in the field of work you retired from? There are probably many people that could glean information from your years of knowledge and experience.
If there isn’t an opportunity for that in your area, what about starting a mentorship program?

Fulfillment isn’t guaranteed. Find a purpose. Find something that make you forget what time it is! Socializing is a totally different thing. You’re lucky you have a house! I’m paying $2k as a single person. If you have to do things on your own and aren’t travelling? Get a pet. Fulfillment is a mindset! Regardless of what you are doing. “Expectations”. “Hate” “Failure” aren’t positive self dialogue. Should this. Could that. Keep trying new things. Give without expectations. Pamper yourself. Try not to be so judgemental of yourself. Look at your little successes and accomplishments and be grateful. That cemetery is a distant relative from Missouri. ❤

I think we all have those days. I have days where I sit and think that I've done nothing with my life. Nothing fulfilling. I've been a stay-at-home mom most of my life sometimes working retail here and there. Then I have days where I sit there and I think you know what I've had a good life I've enjoyed my life. There's been times where I was a broke ass including right now but then there were times when I had extra money. I've always been a happy-go-lucky person.
I can see Laura where you would be struggling I can understand that, but when you are having for lack of better words, a crap day, where you just want to put on your dirty old crap sweat clothes as I like to call them and sit around, that's when you pick up your camera and start recording to film a video for us🎉😂 you should think about all the good you're doing right now giving us advice and just talking making us feel like we are definitely not alone in our struggles and thoughts.

Thanks so so much!! I really appreciate your kindness. And yes, it would have been easier to wait for a happier moment but that’s not real life. I’m good accepting the ups and downs. It shows that we are all going through a process so why not be honest. Thanks again
