  • None other than Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson-astrophysicist and the voice of scientific discovery for so many-paid a visit to NYBG in his home borough of the Bronx to donate a piece of history to our collection. After touring the grounds with Todd Forrest, our VP for Horticulture and Living Collections, Dr. Tyson graciously presented us with a sapling that includes a graft from a cutting of Isaac Newton’s famed apple tree. The young tree, now being cared for in the Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections, will find a permanent home on the grounds of NYBG.

Newton didn't invent calculus on a dare in tow months. That's a piece of bad history. Fermat, Cavalieri, Barrows and others had laid the foundations of integral and differential calculus before Newton came along. Building this branch of mathematics was the collaborative effort of many people over many years.
