These graduates were so fortunate to have such an inspired speaker/person to speak at their graduation. I just truly wonder how many appreciated this? The buildings that were shown in the video were amazing,.
I'm a History graduate student and I have to say he has an incredible grasp of History. Very revisionist (which is good and not a pejorative in any sense), and I appreciate that.
All I can say is the fact that he is correct in everything he said in that speech. Which leads to the relevant question...... How do we take war and money from the list of "drivers" to simply "galvanize" a continuous R&D effort/policy that will always make a difference that will prevent the first one and always generate the latter? Which by the way, is exactly his point.
Nah i don't think he was really nervous. I could sense a bit effort in his voice, but i think he just gave more breath and support to his speech cause he was speaking to a large crowd of audiences.
In reply to gheorghe cojocaru below: This is not the spot where Kennedy gave his famous speech. I was there, with other students all wearing ridiculous looking Freshman beanies, in Rice Stadium during Freshman Week of 1962. Upper classmen were upset that the speech was given before they got to campus. There was sparse attendance, since Rice had a total of only a few thousand students and its stadium is huge - one of the early Super Bowls was played there. All I remember from the speech was, "Why does man want to go to the moon? Why does Rice play Texas?!" Tensions with Cuba were high back then, and when Kennedy was speaking a small plane flew low and directly over the stadium with a banner that said, "Enforce the Monroe Doctrine." You'll never see anything near a president like that again.
Thank you Dr. Tyson for being a great role model and for making the universe exciting and most interesting! Great commencement speech and Congrats on Astroid Tyson!! Thanks for the history of our country's journey to the moon and mars.
The scientific community prefers robots because they're cheaper, less risky, don't need to come home and able to get a lot more samples done quicker. Niel wants human astronauts because he thinks people need "scientific heroes" to motivate them. I'm unsure if he's right but given the relatively low cost and high potential rewards, i think it's worth funding. We have robots because they're a lot cheaper basically.
He's not against space X at all. In fact he has one of the head of space X on his Startalk podcast. Plus, he's never demeaned any private space enterprises. GAWD DAYM.
Tyson would disagree with exploration being in our blood. He insists we need war or profit to motivate us to do it, as he spends half this speech saying. "We haven't lost our will, we never had the will we tell ourselves we had" as he says half way in. He also says, rightly i think, that the culture of innovation is probably more important than the spinoff tech it produces. I think we'd do best to invest in more practical science but it'd cost so relatively little to go to Mars, why not go?
It wouldn't cost very much money to go to Mars. We can't tell what we'd find out if we got there but it seems to have more of a chance of finding something interesting than other things we could invest a similar amount of cash in. Tyson often says giving us scientific 'heroes' like manned astronauts will motivate people to innovate and enter science. I tend to think we should invest most of our science budget in more useful things than going to Mars but it'd cost so relatively little, why not?
Actually Diogenes von Sinope, a Greek philosopher was the first one to think of earth as one community, not the Doctors Without Borders organisation. His idea manifested in the Cosmopolitanism ideology during the Age of Enlightenment in Europe.
Neil DeGrasse is certainly one of my heroes, just listening to him and other like Elon Musk bring tears to my eyes realizing the true relevance of life.
liked, why so many ads tho bro? unless you are Neil himself, which i doubt i dont think its fair to profit off of that much of our time. then again its your channel and here i am watching it ;) (edit) also they are skippable type, so ill give you credit for that too.
Dude. It's an idiom. He's referring to the fact that people don't want to live poor. He's saying "don't want to die poor" for rhetorical reasons, to 'rhyme' with the "don't want to die" motive. I don't see why you're refusing to get that he means "don't want to be poor while alive." Is english not your first language? maybe that could explain it?
"I don't know" is an honest answer. The universe is either one way or the other but that doesn't mean your beliefs are. You can't honestly tell me that there's no question you're agnostic on. What is dark energy and dark matter? These are questions all of us have to be agnostic about. If you don't know calculus, you'll probably be agnostic about calculus questions. If you haven't tasted a food, you'll likely be agnostic about whether you like it. It's possible to honestly not know something.
It makes it a relatively tiny amount of money compared to the stuff we burn on other lesser projects. It shows that we can definitely afoard to spend this 0.05% of our taxes and far more on something like NASA which produces such large returns.
Queen Isabel of Spain funded Columbus to plant the spanish flag on any newly discovered land, to find a shorter route to India, and to bring back silver. Columbus was driven by science, Isabel by money. Says NDT in more detail in another keynote video. Harari has a similar story about, if I remember correctly, the military expedition of James Cook, who discovered New Zealand, and conquered it.
More to the point than my previous comment: both statements are consistent. Queen Isabel paid big money, not for exploration, but with the expectation of getting a return of investment. Columbus set sail, motivated by exploration, ie science.
maybe you missed the point of my old comment. we are spending money on exploring. not as much as we could, but we are in fact spending money to explore.
You're a smart guy, but I'm finding it difficult to explain to you what Dr. Tyson meant. I think you may be thinking too much into it/over analyzing it. Dying broke doesn't necessarily mean be broke when they die. It means being broke for the rest of their lives until they die. I don't know. I feel like I'm explaining colors to a blind guy.
I've not been a person that goes out on vacations, but now I have greater reason to do some traveling: A checklist tour where I'm able to shake hands and have a photo with DeGrass Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Krauss, Steve Wozniak, Sam Harris, Michio kaku, AronRa, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Elton John, B. Joel, Spielberg. A shame I'm not able anymore to shake hands with Ch. Hitchens, Steve Jobs, Sagan, Darwin, Newton, Faraday, Einstein, Any idea of somebody else that should I know about?
Um, ahh the first Europeans were those who left Scandinavia and basically hop-scotched their way too the North American Content. And yes it was funded to find resources...Money!
Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the greatest teachers of his generation... Dont believe me..... listen to Dawkins explain an idea or theory, then listen to the master!!!

If people would stop serving "nations" and "leaders" and "gods" and instead would start serving OUR species, thing could be much different.
Doesn't work that way and probably never will given the immutability of human nature.
leaders are made to serve nations, chosed by people... to bad people forgot in a way or another.
'could' , exactly.
I'm a History graduate student and I have to say he has an incredible grasp of History. Very revisionist (which is good and not a pejorative in any sense), and I appreciate that.
Dr. Tyson is amazing, wish he had been the key note speaker at my commencement. So motivating are his words.
I respect this guy SO much
I love this man. I dream that I'll be able to meet him one day. Love you Neil deGrasse Tyson
One of the greatest speeches ever. I watch this from time to time to lift up my spirits and outlook for the future
I think I'll do the same...
Absolutely inspirational...

Joel50PR You may want to watch “Paradise or Oblivion” documentary by The Venus Project or read “The Best That Money Can’t Buy” by Jacque Fresco
How cool it must be for Neil Degrasse Tyson to speak when you graduate...awesome!!
This is so inspiring... now I want to study at Rice University :)
Is it only me who thinks he sounds more nervous than usual?
Yes.
Nah i don't think he was really nervous. I could sense a bit effort in his voice, but i think he just gave more breath and support to his speech cause he was speaking to a large crowd of audiences.
He didn't have a glass of whiskey
@@cassamachillah8833 or some may say… a “joint”
Maybe he didn't smoke deGrasse before this 😂😂
How can anyone dislike this!?

I would be absolutely thrilled to have Dr. Tyson speak at my graduation.
I'm not a student at this school, but I loved the message given by Dr. Tyson.
Love from Nagaland, northeast India

clever guy, outstanding!!!
Is that the same spot ,from were Keneddy gave that famous speach
Because exploration is in our blood.
Exploring creates technological advancements and innovations.

It’s so nice to discovered in the universes, with the empty hands !
OMG he was in Houston I live there.
So inspiring
Lots of love from India dear Tyson! You are a president material!!
I don’t think people realize he gives the SAME EXACT SPEECH (word for word) EVERY WHERE. He didn’t even bother to change it!
He's not against space X at all. In fact he has one of the head of space X on his Startalk podcast. Plus, he's never demeaned any private space enterprises. GAWD DAYM.
This speech indirectly change the way of seeing the future, and the past.
If you do this, make a catalogue via a blog. Great idea!
We have had our exploratory compass taken from us by those who see exploration as escape.

Neat seeing people smile when his name is mentioned. :)
Great speech Tyson!!
Neil is just so darn likable. I want to give him a hug!
I'm going to be late to my own University just to watch this...
Actually Diogenes von Sinope, a Greek philosopher was the first one to think of earth as one community, not the Doctors Without Borders organisation. His idea manifested in the Cosmopolitanism ideology during the Age of Enlightenment in Europe.
18:15 everybody was paying attention to every syllable coming out of Tyson. Leadership exemplified founded on knowledge and most importantly wisdom!

Increased by 10,000 views in the last 4 days. At that rate, in a little over a year it'll have one million.
The only reason i'm watching this is because Neil DeGrasse Tyson is in it... I did not even know Rice university was a school.
can you please elaborate?
He is an Awesome person!
Hold on now, that looks like in rise University in Houston Texas
Amazing 🎉
0:59-'A Rice welcome for Neil Degrasse Tyson'
I cliked because of the hat, and then stayed because of the speech
Sure, thanks!
This video has 35.000 views (as of this moment), the same as the Kennedy speech Tyson was refering to. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
Rice has so cool commencement speechs

I am sure there was a lot of mismanagement.
Was that 30 years ago when we had surplus?
Yea, right! That would be great!
I swear to God he needs to run for president
I agree

Neil is my "god".... and when i say god... i mean savior.
And the winner is Gryffindor.
must have gotten alot of views in the past 2 weeks

Watch out, we got a badass over here.
thats pocket change compared to what a mars mission would cost
As much as I adore this guy, I wish he was right, we didn't start taking care of the world since 1970's, it's getting worse by the hour.
Actually he states he is agnostic. He even has a youtube video here on it.
But great guy.
love you tyson

Holy shi**, what a gazelle in the audience!
No, JFK spoke at the Rice Stadium/Football stadium.
Two different speeches. Pay attention.
I heard he wanted to land in India, to trade with it
"No one EVER paid big money just for exploration"
"Columbus set sail paid for by Spain just for exploration "
Which is it Neil?
It definitely wasn’t big money, the Queen of Spain thought he might die on the journey he might as well have been expendable.
Queen Isabel of Spain funded Columbus to plant the spanish flag on any newly discovered land, to find a shorter route to India, and to bring back silver. Yea hes bad ass !
Tyson is a great mind. A very gifted intellectual endowed with honesty and humility. He is dead on about the true nature of humans.
Because apparently America has “other” priorities now.
18 doctorates.. dafuq?
So what if he is?
He's an agnostic as other commenters have said. Even if he was, why would that matter? Would it matter if he was a jew or a muslim?
I just hope he get 2 know god before he leaves this
World cause no matter what
He says god is real
Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the greatest teachers of his generation...

The national debt rises because taxes were cut and deficits paid for with borrowed money, its 30 years of gross financial mismanagement.
