  • Neil deGrasse Tyson was awed when he visited the Hayden Planetarium in New York City for the first time at the age of nine; since 1996, he's run the place. The rock-star astrophysicist, who has 7.2 million Twitter followers, can fill a theater with people eager to hear him talk science. And his latest book, "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry," offers a shortcut to scientific literacy - a goal Tyson also pursues in his radio and TV series, "Star Talk." Martha Teichner reports.

Is this the interview where he explains that, if God is real, then he's either not all powerful or all good? Because I loved that one.

"Who would've thought a scientist would be funny?"
Someone watches far too much Big Bang Theory I'm guessing.

    Let’s look at this objectively…
So here’s a black child who was born in the inner city.
At the age of 9, he visited the Hayden planetarium and was blown away by what he saw.
He decided that’s what he wanted to do with his life.
He grew up to be an astrophysicist.
He is not only one of the most recognizable people in his field, he’s one of the most recognizable people in the world.
Oh and remember his visit to the Hayden planetarium? Yeah he runs that place now.
Things like that do not happen in countries that are systemically racist and slanted so that people of color can’t succeed. The fact that people can’t connect those dots blows me away.

So your whole premise is based on one successful guy from the inner city? That’s like saying racism doesn’t exist in America because we’ve had a black president. I know. Stuff like this is hard for people in the majority to comprehend so I get it.

Life liberated from the shackles of race, religions, gods, nationalities, ethnicities. Such life-defining truth. Yet still so hard for most to grasp. From a cosmic perspective humanity as a whole is irrelevant. To waste time sub-dividing this irrelevance into all these categories is irresponsible and pointless. Imagine it...then witness it...then live it.
