Stephen the Great was a highly underrated political and military genius. His insanely long rule of 47 years while surrounded by 3 vastly more powerful and hostile empires and only losing 2 times out of 36 battles and still managed to gain land.
I live in Suceava, the former capitol city of Moldavia, and during my school times, we learned a lot about Stephan the Great and those times. He was the best military strategist, hands down, and because of this, he ruled Moldavia for 47 years, being second after Carol I, who ruled for 48 years, in the late 1800's - early 1900's. Stephan had his share of losses (albeit a few), mainly because being heavily outnumbered. His battle and war strategies were superior to anyone else, Poles, Hungarians, even Franks and Gemanic people. Luck had never played any role, and the man fought over 50 major battles during his rule, and a bunch of smaller ones, losing only 2. He was the master of guerilla warfare, tactical and fake retreats, multiple front engagements, luring enemy troops, terrain strategist, etc. etc. He was hundreds of years ahead in terms of military startegy, this is why he managed to rule 47 years, a very small country (300-400k total population), having only 6-7k professional soldiers. Over 60% of his army was basically peasants (usually 10-15k, depending on the time of the conflict - Summer being harvest time). However, those peasants, after 4-5 major battles, became at least semi-professional soldiers, hence, his army, after 5 years, was mainly a professional army. He won a lot of battles being outnumbered 2 to 1, which in those times was a lot...but his professional soldiers outnumbered the enemy professional soldiers. Paired with guerilla warfare (his soldiers were extremely good at this), terrain advantage and multiple front engagements, it's no surprise that he managed to keep Moldavia undefeated for nearly 47 times. Even if the history books don't present him as a warrior, the man had war in his blood. He was present at every single battle...not sitting on a chair on a hill giving orders, but leading the troops. And this is how he died. An infected battle wound marked his end.

Bruv, that CH in Valachia is pronounced like K or KH. Similar to Kh in Khan. At least that was the way we pronounced it in moldovan school in the late 90s.
Not only that, but he actually gave every soldier a very special and potent royal wine, a dark red one called "Singe de Voinic" - "Blood of the brave", which is said it would give vigor to the warriors and take their fears away, so they would fight without fear, like possessed.
Hmm. did they use sackbutts and krumhorns too, in addition to the kettle drums? These instruments were often used in Renaissance warfare to intimidate the enemy.
I totally agree with you, Dustin. By the way, his full historical name is Stefan the Great and the Saint as the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him for being the greatest Christian warrior of Romania and one of the bravest Holly Cross defenders of Europe in his time. We owe Stefan the Great to a great extent the fact we are still Christians in these parts of the world and we still speak our ancient version of Latin that is the Romanian language. Cheers!

As a matter of fact, the Ottomans later on till today (Turkish republic) admire stefan for his bravery and brilliant military tactics. His personal sword kept with much respect in Topkapi palace.
@@igeneleux3019 Meeh, was just a little joke. While that sword of Stephen The Great is something Romanians deserve to have, and considering the fact that it is not known how the sword actually got there (could have been captured after a battle or could have been offered as a gift from Stephen's son to befriend the Ottoman Empire), I do understand the reasons the Turkish Government would not give it back (create a precedent and thus other countries asking for stuff the Ottomans acquired during their conquers). Btw, that sword is 1.25 meters long and very unwieldy.
That’s just a legend. He built the monasteries after he made peace with the ottomans in 1484. He began a massive construction program which lasted till the end of his rule.
Stefan III did great moves, to a very strong enemy; he handled the terrain and the information flow efficiently, very similar to mongols at their best. I really enjoyed the details of the battle, keep going, friend.
Funny you mention them, the mongols also invaded Moldova in the time of Stefan III, he defeted them to. When everyone around you is a major empire and wants your land, you either get verry eficient at fighting or get wiped out. Just look at Afganistan...
for you, yes, for him, no. He's known in Romania and Moldova today as the best leader we're ever had, more so than his cousin who ya'll are obsessed with
"In war, events of importance are the result of trivial causes." Stefan was a truly capable commander, who could exploit tactics, weather and terrain to his successful battle.
Indeed, even without the fog the valley where the battle took place is surrounded by hill slopes and thick forest. A perfect place for an ambush of a larger army - if you know how to coordinate one.
Great video. I truly learned a lot about one of history's less well-known yet most capable rulers and generals. Stefan clearly understood the importance that maneuver, deception, topography, and meteorology had upon the battlefield.
He's arguably one of the best Romanian Principality rulers. But he was also quite fears. He was well known for beheading the Boieri that wavered or plotted against him. That was likely due to the traumatic childhood he had. His father was assassinated before him and there's another cool legend that you should check out about his childhood. Google The Oak from Borzesti Church.

@@SergheyCSA What the hell are you smoking lol? He defeated the Mongol empire? The Mongol Empire fell 130 years before Stephen was even born. Hungarian empire? There was no such thing. Wow! Not to familiar with this battle but that was one of the top ambushes I’ve heard of. And for the time period, unbelievable! Thank you for covering this one. Moldavia taking on the Ottomans !
Stephan the Great was a military genius. He employed military tactics like guerilla warfare and tactical retreats on a whole new level. Hundreds of years ahead his time. Sure, guerilla warfare was used since before Roman Empire, but Stephan made it an art. The way he used guerrilla warfare was similar to Napoleonic Wars, 300 years later.
Stefan the Great is celebrated as a Saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Along side with Constantin Brancoveanu, Neagoe Basarab. He was called " The Athelete Of Christ ". He also defeated the Hungarian, Poles, Tatars. He raised a Monastery for every victory he ever had. His Spiritual Father was saint Danil Sihastrul ( Danil the Hermit) , which he consulted every time.
It doesn t matter who doesnt want to admit. It is the truth. The history registrated and us also. At that time was admited even by the pope who called him Atleta Christi.
@3rrlia Yes, Stephan betrayed Vlad when he attacked Chilia because it had hungarians there, which Stephan didn't like. There were certainly times when the cousins fought, but it was very rare

Forgive my fellow romanian patriotic fanatics. They tend to watch too many exaggerated stories about their rulers. They sure were great fighters but on a smaller scale.
Next year in 1476, Mehmed II entered Bogdan (Moldova). So conquered both places same year while commanding the army. The guy was a good commander. Not like some pasha he sent to Albania or Romania.

Great Video! I especially loved it how at the end you mention Mehmed the Conqueror's other more humiliating defeat, beneath the walls of Beograd, where funnily enough was also at the hands of a romanian born leader, Iancu of Hunedoara!
That was a Hungarian leader, Janos Hunyady. They don’t say that in Romanian history books because Ceausescu wanted Transylvania to have some heroic military leaders so as not to humiliate them when compared to Wallachia and Moldavia. They used his Romanianized name. The truth is that Transylvania never had a great military leader, people there were always serfs and they accepted their condition. Only the szekelys had pride and dignity and they fought alongside Wallachian and Moldavian leaders to gain freedom. The unification of Romania (1601), re-unification (1918) and liberation (September 1944) all came from the South and into Transylvania. Not the other way around.
Great channel! Its amazing how such a small nation (with support) stood against such a enormous empire, partially at least. Most channels cover battles of big nations and small ones are forgotten, regardless of their importance. Hope to see a video in the future about Vlad Tepes guerrilla fight against the ottoman campaign. Best of luck!

This channel is not the best yet, although it is pretty good and can improve quite a few things. Check Historia Civilis, Invicta, Kings and Generals or BazBattles (jus to say a few). They have some of the best videos regarding strategy, old battles, and history.
Thank you kindly, I like the content you have over on your channel as well. The battle is fairly known, although not as covered as some other more famous battles.
In the USA most history books tend to Very quickly gloss over Eastern European and Ottoman history-Vlad tepes, Lepanto, siege of Viena/Malta/Constantinople and a couple others might get mentioned but it is nice to see others I have not heard of-always love to learn more :)
That was the battle that stop Muslim expansion to Easter Europe, like forever, after his cousin Vlad "The Impaler"caused another Ottoman campaign to crumble in the dust during the night of 16-17 June 1462. Romanians were the stone that the ottomans could never chew, as Habsburgs and Russian Empire. We bent but we were never broke, a small and insignificant people, at the convergence of four "Grate Neighbors"(The Habsburg Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Empire, The Ottoman Empire, and The Russian Tsarist Empire). Because of Roman heritage we knew the best how to use the Latin expression "Divide et impera", we used them against each other to assure our survival.

@@cinevadinsighet Well thank you friend, I like to look at it as a small population being part of two great empires and still retaining our language and culture
Just to mention, Bulgarians at that time were enslaved. "Bulgarian engineers" is an absurd. The peasant were forced to do all the job in the Empire and to pay all the taxes, so if you have to build a bridge probably Bulgarian peasants will do it. It is a bit similar to say that Nazi army was supported by Jewish engineers during 1944... In the video about Vlad Tsepesh it is the same. Bulgarians had no right to have weapons and serve in the army, or to have any kind of military forces. Few exceptions were made for guards of some very dangerous places in the Mountains. And Bulgarian rebellions or usual people always supported forces against Turkish, if they can.
“Engineers” in military terms means the ones who are building bridges, assembling pontoons, clearing pathways. Since this is heavy work it is generally performed by the captive population. The use of the term “engineers” in this context is perfectly appropriate.

Not only that, but he actually gave every soldier a very special and potent royal wine, a dark red one called "Singe de Voinic" - "Blood of the brave", which is said it would give vigor to the warriors and take their fears away, so they would fight without fear, like possessed.

I totally agree with you, Dustin. By the way, his full historical name is Stefan the Great and the Saint as the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him for being the greatest Christian warrior of Romania and one of the bravest Holly Cross defenders of Europe in his time. Great video. I truly learned a lot about one of history's less well-known yet most capable rulers and generals. Stefan clearly understood the importance that maneuver, deception, topography, and meteorology had upon the battlefield.
Thank you. I too was blown away when I went in-depth about Stefan.
He's arguably one of the best Romanian Principality rulers. But he was also quite fears. He was well known for beheading the Boieri that wavered or plotted against him.

We know brother! We do not blame you! Thank you to Szekely and Polish people!
“Engineers” in military terms means the ones who are building bridges, assembling pontoons, clearing pathways. Since this is heavy work it is generally performed by the captive population. The use of the term “engineers” in this context is perfectly appropriate.
I love this battle. The strategy is amazing !
Thankyou for bringing us a piece of romanian history!
I love historical channels, espeially the ones that analyze battles, but I am confident this is the best one yet. Your analysis is flawless, and as a romanian reenactor that did a small rendition of the battle of Vaslui, I was extremely pleased to see familiar stuff, and historical accuracy. Keep up the good work, you're the best out there!
Thank you kindly.
I hope that I am not lying. I think this is the first video that I share on the facebook. I'm from Romania. I never knew that history can be so beautiful presented. Our teachers never show as the history like that. Orgasmic video.
Thank you for watching and sharing.
Dude...phrasing...
MrHarrytheJew hehe it was pretty funny though
Your pronunctiation is a bit off, but the video is awesome indeed! It's nice to see someone actually taking the time to research our history and to put it out there in a well-made video. I subscribed!

Indeed Stefan The Great and The Holy. The best ruler this country ever had, I mean the entire Romania. I'm proud to be citizen of Moldavia. I'm living close to Vaslui.
Feels good watching such an awesome documentary that's about my little town I live in :D
Really well done!
Thank you for your generous words. It's always great to receive positive feedback from people who live in the area.
Stefan is indeed a great underated commander of that times with a very small country defeated all the bigger empires around him at that time.
