Badass, fearsome & indomitable fighting men nonetheless, from Morgarten till now! For back all throughout the 13, 14 & 15 hundreds the Swiss acquired this reputation of near invincibility on the battlefield, viewed as supermen by many, these fierce & amazingly disciplined soldiers whose legendary fame was unsurpassed in all of Europe, 2nd only to the Scots & Irish in terms of primeval ferocity, viciousness & feral combat prowess, along with certain Serbian, Croatian & Bosnian fighting formations as well ((with the Irish & Scots being more or less these savage & primitive tribal types, & often lacking the discipline, cohesion, conventional standards, modern weapons, armor & nationalistic unity of just about all other Europeans for centuries, up until at least the middle 1600's))👊👊👍👍 You Swiss were the first to show all the rest of Europe's serf/peasant/middle classes how to fight back effectively against the well armed, thoroughly trained, dangerously professional, superbly equipped & finely armoured armies of the avaricious, power hungry, pompous & demeaning aristocratic nobility of that time, which had been running roughshod over everyone else, SAVE THOSE dwelling on the very outer fringes of mainstream European Society (((again, the Irish, Scots, Serbs & Croats, including the Finns up North, the Russian/Ukrainian Cossacks roaming the Steppes, the Polish/Lithuanian realms defended by their extremely formidable Winged Hussar heavy cavalry formations, & those light infantry fighters along the Spanish frontier, such as the Algomavers from Catalonia, ALL ferocious, viscerally inspired & die hard fringe elements who, to varying degrees & much like the mountainous Swiss, remained independent of & from much of the rest of European Society for generations & centuries, such was both their geographic isolation & deep sense of fierce independence that allowed that collection of warrior driven cultures to maintain this autonomy/semi-autonomy from outsiders, for ages, off & on YET still largely independent/self ruling👊👊👍👍))). @@sangay9361 well there was a swiss confederation, but the main thing that I wanted to say is that throughout history switzerland was populated mostly with germans until 18th and 19th centuries when there was very high immigration to switzerland (mostly french)
@@sangay9361 And many people on the side on the Habsburg came from places like Zürich and so on which is Swiss nowdays so both sides probably spoke quite similair dialects. In switzerland the youth forgets for what our forefathers died for. Its even a shame people forgetting that the Halbert/Hellebarde the most swiss weapon ever is.
What a delightful tale I knew nothing about ! My father's family left Switzerland around 1700 because of the repressive anti-Mennonite marriage laws and came to some land they had bought from William Penn.
I wonder if the Swiss were yelling at Leopold telling to speak up because they couldn't here him talking about the peasants while he rode away on his horse. Really this was just a great small scale ambush similar to what the Hannibal deployed against the Romans. Also fantastic work mate.
Great job on the video! further trivia: Whereas the Austrian lost around 2000 men on that day (as you mentioned), the Swiss suffered only around a dozen casualties.
As a field comander Duke Leopold must have been a complete fool. The situation resembles that of Varus Legions in the Teutoburger Forest: An army strchtched to a long, long thin line, unable to form a battle-formation.
Yeah, definitely has similarities. Although to be fair Hannibal's ambush was on a much larger scale, set up in a very narrow time frame, and executed to perfection. And of course let's pretend for a moment that no one noticed my Hannibal bias :)

Little fault, Landamman Stauffacher did not Plunder or fight Einsiedeln, a small handfull of Farmers and artisans has made the Robbery and Stauffacher and the Rulers of the two other Swiss Cantons where not happy about this but Leopold from Habsburg saw an oppurtunity to conquering the Swiss and gain power of the Mountain Passes such as the Gotthard. Unfortunately he brings his Knights with him and for them the Swiss seems an easie prey. That lead to an annihilation of the Army of Leopold. In this times a Knight could pay a ransom and become free. The Swiss against it knew they could not pay such an amount of money and would be killed or enslaved, so the answer from the Swiss was they killed everyone who carried a Weapon. The Documentary inspite of is very good.

Badass, fearsome & indomitable fighting men nonetheless, from Morgarten till now!
For back all throughout the 13, 14 & 15 hundreds the Swiss acquired this reputation of near invincibility on the battlefield, viewed as supermen by many, these fierce & amazingly disciplined soldiers whose legendary fame was unsurpassed in all of Europe, 2nd only to the Scots & Irish in terms of primeval ferocity, viciousness & feral combat prowess, along with certain Serbian, Croatian & Bosnian fighting formations as well ((with the Irish & Scots being more or less these savage & primitive tribal types, & often lacking the discipline, cohesion, conventional standards, modern weapons, armor & nationalistic unity of just about all other Europeans for centuries, up until at least the middle 1600's))👊👊👍👍
You Swiss were the first to show all the rest of Europe's serf/peasant/middle classes how to fight back effectively against the well armed, thoroughly trained, dangerously professional, superbly equipped & finely armoured armies of the avaricious, power hungry, pompous & demeaning aristocratic nobility of that time, which had been running roughshod over everyone else, SAVE THOSE dwelling on the very outer fringes of mainstream European Society
(((again, the Irish, Scots, Serbs & Croats, including the Finns up North, the Russian/Ukrainian Cossacks roaming the Steppes, the Polish/Lithuanian realms defended by their extremely formidable Winged Hussar heavy cavalry formations, & those light infantry fighters along the Spanish frontier, such as the Algomavers from Catalonia, ALL ferocious, viscerally inspired & die hard fringe elements who, to varying degrees & much like the mountainous Swiss, remained independent of & from much of the rest of European Society for generations & centuries, such was both their geographic isolation & deep sense of fierce independence that allowed that collection of warrior driven cultures to maintain this autonomy/semi-autonomy from outsiders, for ages, off & on YET still largely independent/self ruling👊👊👍👍))). Swiss Power🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭
Those who want peace must be prepared for war.
Every country's worst nightmare:
Russians: When the grass starts screaming in Mongolian
French: When the sky whistles in English
English: When the oceans chant in Danish
Byzantines: When the walls rumble in Turkish
Romans: When forest shrieks German
Americans: When the capital smells like maple syrup
Austrians: When the mountains yodel
May I ask what do you mean by the French part!?
Also you should add
America: when a tree start talking in Vietnamese.
German: when the snow start talking in Russian
@@napolien1310 The French part is a reference to the Battle of Agincourt. The English used a large contingent of Longbowmen. They caused heavy casualties amongst the French nobility.
@@grimgoreironhide9985 oh that battle.
Nice one
Technically Byzantine was taken down by the western crusaders so it's more like the walls starting yelling in English, French, German and Italian.
4th Crusade killed the Byzantines, the ottomans walking in was just a formality.
The typical top notch HistoryMarche quality, but with a further addition, the music is so nice!
Thanks mate! Can't wait for our Battle of Strasbourg project.
@@HistoryMarche hehe.. we didnt kept it secret then! A couple of projects in between(one very small and the other a proper one) and should be ready by late November!
I live 3km from the supposed battlefield. I can really see how it was perfect for an ambush. What a glorious fight for the Swiss farmers. The fight has a small resemblance to Dirtmarchen.
No matter how many times, and how many people, tell this story, I will always stop what I'm doing, and listen. One of the best battles in history.
As a Swiss, I approve of this. Could you do videos about the Sonderbundskrieg, about the Battle of Marignano or the Battle of Sempach? Other interesring features about Swiss history would be the Bern Conquests and the cantonal separation of Basel. Keep it up :)
I'll definitely do more Swiss battles over time, there are some spectacular topics to cover.
He will make it until the Swiss becomes the most powerful Empire on Earth!

Well done! I am impressed. I have seen several videos telling stories of battles similar to this and I preferred your work over theirs. Good job! You're telling a story while I feel the other channels give information.
Thank you sir. Indeed, I often think that the best way to re-tell history is as a story. Thank you for watching.

Well made but short documentary! I love how you addressed the politics of the time in depth at the begining! The HRE was full of these kinds of complicated diplomatic relations.
Subscribed in anticipation of more Swiss battle videos :)
Thank you sir, welcome to the channel. Over the coming months I'll definitely do more Swiss battles from this period, Sempach, etc. There are some gems to cover there.
Excellent, as always.
MORE SWITZERLAND VIDEOOOS
Best narration of battle I’ve watched so far! Thank you! Eline saglik.
Oh yes finally, the battle that I've been waiting for.
one of the many many examples that being able to choose the battlefield is just as important as having the best weapons.

Everybody gangsta til the mountains start speaking swiss
Bad Taste Covers you mean german/french/italian/romansch?
@@sangay9361 It was mostly just german back then
Marko J. Yeah I know, but the guy also said swiss and back then there was no “Switzerland”.
This battle is certainly important for "Swiss" history but people need to understanf that Swiss history is a story of mostly Southern German cantons/cities/regions and their shifting alliances.
Finally somebody mentions the deeds of my ancestors. Thanks for that, you got the facts right.

Thank you for covering swiss battles. Even in Switzerland those battles are more and more unknown and people seem to forgett their own history.
Thank you for watching. There are some awesome battles by the Swiss. I definitely plan to do more.
In switzerland the youth forgets for what our forefathers died for. Its even a shame people forgetting that the Halbert/Hellebarde the most swiss weapon ever is.

The best channel in the world!!! Love new narrator 😍👍
What a delightful tale I knew nothing about ! My father's family left Switzerland around 1700 because of the repressive anti-Mennonite marriage laws and came to some land they had bought from William Penn.
Thank you for watching.
So this is where they got the inspiration for the battle in Warhammer 2 where you ambush Todbringer's army
an ambush as beautiful as battle of lake trasimene
It's cool and all but Trasimene has no equal
Extraordinary work on this one
Thank you sir.
amazing job all around!
As a field comander Duke Leopold must have been a complete fool. The situation resembles that of Varus Legions in the Teutoburger Forest: An army strchtched to a long, long thin line, unable to form a battle-formation.
Yet again another fantastic vid HM great content. 👍
Thank you. Much appreciated!
@@HistoryMarche You are gracious but the thanks is mine friend to you and your team for such quality work and content.
What i love about this channel is funny dialogues
Second Austrian Army "We won't let that happen! OH NO!
Swiss peasants: "ROAR"
-Auf wiedersehen
reminds me of the tactics of Lake Trasimene
Yeah, definitely has similarities. Although to be fair Hannibal's ambush was on a much larger scale, set up in a very narrow time frame, and executed to perfection. And of course let's pretend for a moment that no one noticed my Hannibal bias :)

I hate this channel...
Every time it uploads a video, I demolish my house just to get downstairs to watch it on the big tv.
Hahahaha!
