Theres this Japanese family at my college, and yesterday I just spoke to their son. His English still isnt very good, so we had to speak Japanese. I realized that was my first real full Japanese conversation. It was pretty basic, and my grammar must've been all over the place, but we communicated. It's such a great feeling!
I have a 1 hour commute each way to work and I listen and shadow during this time. The problem I have is that I remember very little of what I just listened too. After almost two years of studying, the best I can still do is introduce myself.
Try recalling or retrieving the things you’ve learned. Say, after five or 30 minutes. Then after a day or two. Then after a week or two. Read books like _Fluent Forever_ or _Make It Stick._ They discuss those science-backed techniques on learning how to learn.
That intro was quite funny but is also really accurate when it comes to learning a different language. The practice speed when learning to converse and the actual speed when conversing can be really difficult to comprehend in the beginning. I know that people have said that to me about English. When I speak to them or they hear me speak, they comment on how quickly I speak and that they are not used to hearing the language, spoken so fast. So this video is really useful. Not just for Japanese but it can be applied to any language someone is trying to learn. Thanks for the constantly great and helpful content 😁👍🏾
Because Japanese is so different from English, when I was in Tokyo learning Japanese, I couldn’t understand a word unless I could use it. European languages are really different - I can sometimes understand a lot better than I speak. And more input is even good enough to help me speak better (European languages). But for Japanese I had to try to speak it over and over and over and fail so much before I got fluent. And if I want to get better than I am now at speaking I don’t think just input would cut it. I’d have to study and then go practice outputting the new grammar and vocabulary. Repeatedly.

When I started to pick up the language naturally by spending alot of time with them, they began to express concern that maybe they were speaking too fast! I told them not to worry since that's how a native speaker would talk so I should get used to listening at that speed! 私の場合、日本の小規模な配信をほぼ毎日見てるので、聞くだけでなく、ちゃんとリアルタイムで反応する機会を増やしている 声に出して返信するよりも、本当にキーボードで考えて返信を打つ時間ある方がずーとずっと楽なんだよねぇ 日本語の練習の独り言となると、ちゃんと文章を考えるのが難しい気がする、、 練習を続けるしかなきゃね〜 あらためて、あざーっす♪
Most of the Spanish lesson sounded like English to me. Anyway, good video. I went to Japan recently (very nice)... I only missed one thing, being able to communicate. When the waitress said (英語メニュー?) I felt useless. Definetely I would like, next time I go to Japan, being able to understand/speak a little more... I think it would improve the whole experience.
I'm someone who has the habit to speak alone and I've always thought it'd be great if I could speak to myself a language nobody else will understand in public where I live. I've attempted speaking japanese with myself, but my vocabulary is too poor so in almost all sentences I want to say, there are a few words I don't know.

I agree with you.... Since i speak it out by Reading I start more to Memorize the words more easylie (I use ¹Busuu and ²Roseta Stone to learn) In 2 i get words I have never learned like 金物屋 (I guess its a super rare word in real Life and Japanese Series) For speaking... I speak to my friends Japanese even If they cant understand me (笑) but Sometimes I Miss Out many words even when i learned them alrdy cuz they r rare words to use😄

I’m not sure I trust Pimsleur, because everything they say sounds like a question. I’m confused about the use of ‘arimasen’, the same as ‘sou desu ne’ which seems to mean both ‘that’s right/I agree’ AS WELL AS ‘…now, let me see…’ as in when deciding something. Pimsleur also said that the phrase for excuse me is the same as for ‘sorry’ which surely isn’t true? It’s also MIXING Jozu and yoku. WTH is going on?….😑😐
Words or phrases can be translated in different ways depending on the context. That’s not unique to Japanese. “すみません” (sumimasen), for example, can be translated “Sorry” or “Excuse me”. OTOH, some are basically impossible to translate. e.g., “お疲れ様”, “ご馳走様” All we can do is get used to it and enjoy learning.
El problema de aprender japones es que no existe un mètodo eficaz, todos los profesores terminan enseñando kanji, pero el estudio del kanji habria que hacerlo despuès, cuando ya eres capaz de hablar y entender. Estudiar kanji al mismo tiempo lo puede hacer una persona joven que no trabaja. Cuando un niño japones empieza a estudiar kanji seguramente ya sabe hablar.
You didn't talk about the part in your skit where the native speaker talked so fast that you couldn't understand. That's my biggest problem. Only understanding a word or two here or there. I know it's because of my limited vocabulary. So, I'm working more on that. Any tips for listening comprehension?
